Abstract

Abstract: This study was aimed at finding out the effect of journal writing on enhancing the writing skill of the first year students of SMA Babussalam Pekanbaru. It was an experimental research with one pre-post test design. A single group was chosen to be the sample of this study by cluster random sampling to get a treatment. There were 24 students joined this study as experimental group. A writing test was used both in pre and post-test. In order to know the difference between pre and post-test and to analyze the hypotheses, t-test was used. After analyzing the data, it was found out that t-test score was 5.74 while t-table score was 2.069. Since t-test was higher than t-table, it can be concluded that alternative hypothesis was accepted. It can be further understood that ?There is significant effect of journal writing on enhancing the writing skill of the first year students of SMA Babussalam Pekanbaru?. Based on research findings, it is suggested that the students can write their journals for several months so the results will be better.

Abstract

Abstract: This study is aimed at finding out if there is any effect of using Top-Down Processing approach on reading comprehension ability of the second year students of SMPN 40 Pekanbaru. This study was a pre-experimental research. The researcher used one group pre-test post-test design to distinguish the effect of using top-down processing approach between the pre-test and the post-test results. The total population in this study was 165 students from four classes. To choose the sample the researcher used cluster random sampling technique. Class VIII.C with 40 students was chosen as the sample. The instrument used to get the data is an objective test. The form of text in the test is narrative text. The test consists of 4 narrative texts with 20 objective questions. Each text has 5 multiple choice type of questions. The researcher used t-test by employing SPSS (Statistical Product and Service Solutions) statistics version 17.0 to measure and compare the students? scores in reading comprehension between the pre-test and the post-test results. The post-test result (79.75) was higher than the pre-test result (61.12). The correlation coefficient between the pre-test and post-test results is 0.868 which indicates that it has a strong correlation. The result indicates that using top-down processing approach is effective to improve the students? reading comprehension ability.Key Words: Effects, top-down processing approach, reading comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find out the second year students? ability of MAN 1 Pekanbaru in comprehending descriptive texts. The research data were collected in November 2016. The subject of this research was class XI MIA 5 which has 30 students. The data were collected using reading comprehension test with multiple choice type. The test contained 40 items. Based on the research, it was found out that the ability of the second year students in comprehending descriptive texts is in good level with the mean score of 72.33. The students? mean score in finding main ideas is in good level with the mean score of 78.00. The students? mean score in finding factual information is in good level with the mean score of 72.00. The students? mean score in finding meaning of vocabulary is in good level with the mean score of 71.33. The students? mean score in finding reference is in good level with the mean score of 64.67. The students? mean score in finding inference is in good with the mean score of 68.67. The students? mean score in identifying generic structure is in mediocre level with the mean score of 56.00. The students? mean score in identifying language features is in good level with the mean score of 68.00. The students? mean score in identifying social function is in good level with the mean score of 74.00. As a conclusion, the highest score obtained by the students is in finding main ideas with the mean score of 78.00 which is categorized into good level, and the lowest score that the students got is in identifying generic structure with the mean score of 56.00 which is categorized into mediocre level.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims at finding the effect of picture series on reading comprehension of the second year students of SMPN 40 Pekanbaru. The method used in this study was quantitative research and the research design was quasi-experimental study. The researcher used Cluster Random Sampling technique to choose the sample. For 165 students of the population, class VIII B was chosen as the experimental class and VIII D as control class. The instrument of this research was in form of multiple choices test for pre-test and post-test. The test was narrative text and there were 30 multiple choice items for each test. The researcher used formula t-test to analyze the data. The result of this study shows that there was a significant difference on students? reading comprehension of narrative text by using picture series and without using picture series. The mean score for experimental class was 61.5 (pre-test) and 83.8 (post-test). The mean score for control class was 71.8 (pre-test) and 82 (post-test). It can be seen that on the df =81 in the degree of significance 5%, the value of degree significance is 1.98. By comparing the value to and tt the result showed that to is higher than tt (to>tt = 5.44>1.98). The alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Therefore It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using picture series on reading comprehension of the second year students of SMPN 40 Pekanbaru.Key words: Effect, picture series, reading comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research aimed to find out the ability of the first grade students of SMAN 1 Simpang Kanan Rokan Hilir in Reading Comprehension. The population of the research is the first grade students of SMAN 1 Simpang Kanan and the sample is 32 students. The instrument used in this research is a reading test. This reading test consisted of 35 questions . Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that the ability of the first grade students of SMAN 1 Simpang Kanan Rokan Hilir in reading comprehension is in good level with mean score is 63.14. Further, the result shows that there are 2 students who are in excellent level, 18 students are in good level, 8 students are in average level, and 4 students are in poor level.Key Words: Students? Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to find the students? morphological errors in writing argumentative essay by the fifth semester students of English Study Program of Universitas Riau. The errors that the writer is concerned are in terms of affixes errors. Cluster Random Sampling technique was used to choose the sample. From 88 students of the population which consist of three classes A, B, and C, class B was chosen as the sample. The instrument of this research was in form of essay writing. The essay was about argumentative essay. Five topics were provided for students that they can choose to write. Error analysis method was used to analyze the data. Based on the results, it was found out that the total numbers of students? morphological errors are 148 errors with the division 28 errors in derivational affixes errors and 120 errors in inflectional affixes errors. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that most of the students tend to make these morphological errors because of the intralingual factors. It happens because students have lack of knowledge in deriving and producing new words from morpheme into the new one because of some of English rules that they do not comprehend well yet. It is suggested that teachers or lecturers need to explain more about the English rules and also its exception, because it will help the students in knowing their errors and understanding more about English.

Abstract

Abstract: This study is aimed at investigating the level of the students? ability at English Study Program of Universitas Riau in supplying correct punctuations. The research design is a descriptive quantitative. There were 45 students chosen as the samples of this research. The instruments of the research were 30 multiple choice questions assessed by using Heaton?s formula that were analyzed by using Harris? measurement. It was found that the average score of the students ability in supplying correct punctuations was 47,9. To be more specific the result finding shows that there were 3 (6,6%) students in excellent ability level. Then, there were 9 (20%) students who were in good ability level. Moreover, there were 12 (26,7%) students who were in mediocre ability level and there were 17 ( 37,8%) students who were in poor level. Last, there were 4 (8,9%) students who were in very poor level.Key Words: Student, Ability, Supply, Correct, Punctuayions

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out whether there is a significant effect of using pictures in teaching writing descriptive text of the second year students of SMPN 1 Siak Hulu in the Academic Year 2016/2017 in writing descriptive text. This is a pre-experimental research conducted by using a pre-test ? treatment ? post-test design. This research used one group pretest-posttest design. The instrument used in this research was tests (pretest and posttest). The population of this research was 296 of the Second Year Students of SMPN 1 Siak Hulu and the sample of this research is the VIII E of SMPN 1 Siak Hulu which is total number of students of class is 35 students. The data of this research were collected by giving the writing test about descriptive text (pretest-posttest) to the students. The collected data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The results of data analysis showed the mean score of pretest was 48.57 and the mean score of posttest was 58.95. Based on the data analysis, It can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the pre-test and the post-test because the t-test observed was higher than t-table. In other words, the alternative hypothesis of this research was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. It also meant that teaching writing by using pictures technique was effective to improve students? writing ability especially in descriptive text.Keywords: Pictures, Writing, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Abstract: This study was aimed at investigating students? strategies and challenges in improving speaking ability in a context of Vocational High School 1 Rengat. This case study employed combining quantitative and qualitative research methods. There were 27 students of Vocational High School 1 Rengat chosen as participants of this study. All of them was asked to fill in a survey of the questionnaires, then 10 out of 27 students were randomly selected to have semi-structured interviews. The results of the study showed that students of Vocational High School 1 Rengat have some challenges in improving speaking ability. Based on the data from questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, it was found that most participants (99,3%) are lack of grammar mastery, some others (74,8%) choose to speak a local language in learning process, and (68,1%) feel nervous when they are asked to speak English. Then, at the same time, they also have some strategies in improving speaking ability. The results show that an interesting topic that is given by the teacher is the one of strategies that is needed by the students (78,6%), and other participants show that (71,1%) find partner as the next strategy that is needed by the students. Meanwhile, at the next strategy (69,6%) participants likes to listen to western music to improving their speaking ability.

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research is aimed to find out whether there is a significant effect of using Card Games vocabulary learning achievement of the first year students of SMPN 5 Tapung. The problem to be discussed here is as follows: Is there a significant effect of using card games on vocabulary learning achievement of the first year students of SMPN 5 Tapung. This research is one group pretest-posttest design. Total sampling technique is used to get the sample. 53 students in class VII-A and class VII-B are taken as the sample. The results of the data analysis shows that the mean scores of the pre-test and the post-test is 62.11 and 74.94. In other words, the mean score of the post-test is higher than the pre-test. The result also shows that the value of t-test (12.83) is higher than t-table (2.007) at the significance level 5%. Therefore, alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using card games on vocabulary learning achievement of the first year students of SMPN 5 Tapung.Keywords: Card Games, Vocabulary, Learning Achievement.
