Abstract

The area of this research is a discourse analysis of the use of persuasive technique types. The object as the background of the study is related to the president?s election, conducted in the USA. Donald Trump won the election and the majority of citizens in the USA chose him as President of the USA in 2016. It is surprised people because he raised the issues, which are very racist and anti-Islam. The public speaking by Donald Trump was reasonable to be studied and the way he talks that is clear and systematic becomes a reason by the researcher to study about the persuasive technique types used in his public speaking speech. This research focused on identifying the types of the persuasive technique used in Donald Trump?s Public Speaking and finding the persuasive technique that is most frequently used by him through qualitative content analysis. The researcher found three types of persuasive technique that used in both of speech which is remarked on North Carolina and remarked on Springfield, Ohio. Those types are Logos, Ethos, and Pathos. The result of this research showed the types of the persuasive technique used in Donald Trump?s public speaking speech texts elaborated by primarily Pathos, Ethos, and followed by Logos. Pathos was 207 sentences found, Ethos was 164 sentences found, and Logos was 58 sentences found, total data of the study is 429. In addition, the researcher also found the persuasive technique type that is most frequently used by Donald Trump, it was Pathos. He frequently used Pathos to influence the voters and the audience. Penelitian ini adalah analisis wacana penggunaan jenis teknik persuasif. Objek sebagai latar belakang penelitian ini terkait dengan pemilihan presiden, yang dilakukan di AS. Donald Trump memenangkan pemilihan dan mayoritas warga di Amerika Serikat memilih dia sebagai Presiden Amerika Serikat pada tahun 2016. Ini mengejutkan orang-orang karena dia mengangkat isu-isu yaitu sangat rasis dan anti-Islam. Pembicaraan publik oleh Donald Trump masuk akal untuk dipelajari dan cara dia berbicara yang jelas dan sistematis menjadi alasan oleh peneliti untuk mempelajari tentang jenis teknik persuasif yang digunakan dalam pidato berbicara di depan umum. Penelitian ini berfokus pada identifikasi jenis teknik persuasif yang digunakan dalam pembicaraan publik Donald Trump dan menemukan teknik persuasif yang paling sering digunakan oleh dia melalui kualitatif konten analisis. Peneliti menemukan tiga jenis teknik persuasif yang digunakan dalam kedua pidato di North Carolina dan di Springfield, Ohio. Jenis-jenis persuasif teknik nya adalah Logos, Ethos, dan Pathos. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan jenis teknik persuasif yang digunakan dalam teks-teks pidato publik Donald Trump yang diuraikan adalah yang terutama Pathos, Ethos, dan diikuti oleh Logos. Pathos 207 kalimat ditemukan, Ethos 164 kalimat ditemukan, dan Logos adalah 58 kalimat ditemukan, total data penelitian adalah 429. Selain itu, peneliti juga menemukan tipe teknik persuasif yang paling sering digunakan oleh Donald Trump adalah Pathos. Dia lebih sering menggunakan Pathos untuk mempengaruhi pemilih dan penonton.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The aims of this research were to find out the intrinsic elements of Mama film and the influences of those intrinsic elements on formulating the theme of Mama film. This research used the intrinsic approach in order to find out the intrinsic elements of Mama film and Lombardi?s theory on identifying a literary work?s theme to find the influences of the intrinsic elements of Mama film on formulating its theme. This research used qualitative method as its research design and the structuralism approach as the tool in analyzing the data. The data of this research were taken from dialogues and narrations of Mama (2013) film script directed by Andres Muschietti. Mama film was a horror film that focusing its theme on mother?s love. As a result, this research showed the intrinsic elements of Mama film consisting of plot (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution), characters (Annabel, Mama, Lucas, Victoria, Lily, Aunt Jane, Dr. Gerald, Jeffrey Desange, and Burnsie), setting (place: hospital, the court, Cabin Halvetia, Clifton Forge, Courtesy of the Institute, and Walls. Time: the year of 1987, Thursday, breakfast time, and night), and point of view which was taken from Victoria?s. Meanwhile, those intrinsic elements had their influences on formulating Mama film?s theme which was: anyone as long as they have the genuine heart, would be able to give the mother?s love. All of the intrinsic elements showed that mother?s love was the theme of this film, given by the three women characters: Annabel, Mama, and Aunt Jane towards Victoria and Lily. Keywords: intrinsic elements, plot, theme, character, setting, point of view ABSTRAK Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu untuk mengidentifikasi unsur-unsur intrinsik yang terdapat pada film Mama dan pengaruh yang diberikan oleh unsur-unsur tersebut dalam menciptakan tema difilm Mama. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan intrinsik untuk megetahui unsur-unsur intrinsik dari film Mama dan teori Lombardi dalam mengidentifikasi suatu tema dari karya sastra untuk mencari pengaruh unsur-unsur intrinsik film Mama dalam membentuk temanya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif sebagai bentuk penelitiannya dan pendekatan struktural sebagai alat untuk menganalisis data dalam penelitian ini. Data yang dipakai dalam penelitian ini diambil dari dialog-dialog dan narasi-narasi skrip film Mama (2013) yang disutradarai oleh Andres Muschietti. Film Mama merupakan film bergenre horor yang temanya berfokus pada kasih ibu. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa unsur-unsur intrinsik yang terdapat pada film Mama terdiri dari alur (orientasi, konflik, klimaks, antiklimaks, dan resolusi), karakter (Annabel, Mama, Lucas, Victoria, Lily, Aunt Jane, Dr. Gerald, Jeffrey Desange, dan Burnsie), latar (tempat: rumah sakit, pengadilan, Kabin Halvetia, Clifton Forge, institut penelitian, dan dinding). Waktu: tahun 1987, hari Kamis, waktu sarapan, dan malam hari), dan sudut pandang yang diambil yaitu sudut pandang Victoria. Disisi lain, semua unsur intrinsik tersebut memiliki pengaruhnya masing-masing dalam penentuan tema film Mama yaitu siapapun itu, selama ia memiliki perasaan yang tulus, mampu untuk memberikan kasih ibu. Semua unsur intrinsik tersebut menunjukkan bahwa kasih ibu merupakan tema dari film Mama yang berasal dari ketiga karakter perempuan: Annabel, Mama, dan Aunt Jean terhadap Victoria dan Lily.  Kata Kunci: elemen-elemen intrinsik, alur, tema, karakter, latar, sudut pandang

Abstract

Literary works and movie sometimes depict about stereotypes of certain race and ethnic. Author and director embed similar negative features to them; hence it becomes a justification that those races and ethnic truly have such negative features. It is like European people who often represent the Orient (Asian people) by negative features in their works. This study is purposed to examine the stereotypical images of Indian society and how they are represented in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel movie by using Orientalism and Bal?s focalization theories. The researcher used qualitative-descriptive method in reference to Mikos? movies analysis method. The result shows that there are 5 stereotypical images of Indian society in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel movie. Those stereotypical images are barbaric, inauthentic, irrational, backward, and weak. All the stereotypical images are represented through British characters (character-bound focalization or internal focalization) which put Indian society as object of focalization. Karya-karya sastra dan film terkadang menggambarkan stereotip dari ras dan etnis tertentu. Penulis dan sutradara memberikan ciri-ciri negatif yang sama kepada mereka, sehingga hal itu menjadi sebuah pembenaran bahwa ras dan etnis tersebut benar-benar memiliki ciri-ciri negatif. Seperti halnnya orang Eropa yang sering merepresentasikan orang-orang Timur (Orang Asia) menggunakan ciri-ciri negatif di karya-karya mereka. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis gambaran stereotip dari masyarakat India dan bagaimana gambaran stereotip tersebut direpresentasikan di film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel menggunakan teori Orientalism dan Fokalisasi Bal. Metode yang digunakan adalah qualitatif-deskriptif dengan referensi metode analisis film Mikos. Hasil penelitian menunujukkan ada 5 gambaran stereotip masyarakat India di film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Gambaran stereotip tersebut adalah bar-bar, tidak dapat dipercaya, tidak rasional, terbelakang, dan lemah. Semua gambaran stereotip tersebut direpresentasikan melalui karakter-karakter orang Inggris (fokalisasi karakter atau fokalisasi internal) yang menempatkan masyarakat India sebagai objek fokalisasi.

Abstract

This study discussed  about the inequality issues experienced by a woman character in Titanic movie, Rose character who lived in a male supremacy society. This study used Beauvoir?s feminist criticism on the ideas of male supremacy and independent woman to find out the types of inequality issues experienced by Rose character and her efforts in overcoming those inequalities. This study also used Mahon?s supporting explanation on Beauvoir?s two ideas to get a thorough understanding of the theory itself. This study was a qualitative research with content analysis as its approach. Words (narrations and dialogues) related to the objectives in this study were taken from Titanic movie script. This study found that Rose character experienced two types of inequality issues and chose to be an independent woman to overcome the two inequalities she experienced in Titanic movie. The two inequalities experienced by Rose character were the burden of marriage and set up expectations. However, these two inequalities were successfully overcome by Rose character when she chose to be an independent woman through two stages: defensive and aggressive. Thus, the conclusions of this study viewed Rose character, regardless coming from the royal class in society, was inevitable to experience the inequality issues due to the fact that her society was a male supremacy one and the way to get one self freed from the inequalities was by becoming an independent woman. Penelitian ini membahas soal isu-isu ketidaksetaraan yang dialami oleh karakter perempuan dalam film Titanic yaitu Rose sebagai seorang yang tinggal dalam lingkungan masyarakat yang berorientasi pada supremasi laki-laki. Penelitian ini menggunakan kritik feminis Beauvoir mengenai supremasi laki-laki dan perempuan mandiri untuk mengetahui tipe-tipe isu ketidaksetaraan yang dialami oleh karakter Rose dan usaha-usaha yang ia lakukan dalam menghadapi bentuk-bentuk ketidaksetaraan tersebut. Penelitian ini juga menggunakan penjelasan tambahan dari Mahon mengenai pemahaman supremasi laki-laki dan perempuan mandiri yang dikemukakan oleh Beauvoir. Penelitian ini berbentuk penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan analisa konten sebagai pendekatannya. Kata-kata (dalam bentuk narasi dan dialog) yang berhubungan dengan kedua objektif dalam penelitian ini merupakan data yang dipakai dan diambil dari skrip film Titanic. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa karakter Rose mengalami dua tipe isu ketidaksetaraan dan memutuskan untuk menjadi seorang perempuan mandiri dalam menghadapi kedua tipe ketidaksetaraan tersebut difilm Titanic. Kedua tipe ketidaksetaraan yang dialami oleh karakter Rose yaitu kewajiban menikah dan ekspektasi-ekspektasi terhadap seorang perempuan dalam masyarakat. Namun, kedua tipe ketidaksetaraan ini dapat dihadapi dengan baik oleh karakter Rose saat ia memutuskan untuk menjadi seorang perempuan mandiri setelah melalui dua tahapan: defensif dan agresif. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa karakter Rose, terlepas dari fakta bahwa ia berasal dari golongan kelas atas, tetap tidak bisa terhindar dari isu-isu ketidaksetaraan yang menimpa kaum perempuan dikarenakan sistem supremasi laki-laki yang digunakan dalam masyarakat yang Rose tinggali dan cara untuk terlepas dari isu-isu ketidaksetaraan tersebut yaitu dengan menjadi perempuan mandiri.

Abstract

The hero characters, like most people know, are just like Superman, Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, who gain superpower, stronger than ordinary people, and fight monsters to save the world. However, there are also the hero characters that do not gain superpower. This study concerned on finding out the differences between Flik of A Bug?s Life and Flint of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs movies as the ordinary hero characters by using Campbell?s hero?s journey theory. This study was a qualitative research with content analysis approach. Data of this study were words including narrations and dialogues taken from A Bug?s Life and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs movie scripts. This study showed that Flik was a dependent hero character, while Flint was an independent one. In Flik?s case, he was considered as the dependent hero character due to his natural trait as the ant colony to put the colony above everything else. While, Flint was considered as the independent hero character based on his reasons of doing the adventure: to fulfill his own desire of being acknowledged by his dad and to show his attractive side to the girl that he fell in love with, Sam Sparks. To conclude, regardless the fact that both Flik and Flint were included as the ordinary hero characters, this study had shown they still had their own version of hero characters.

Abstract

This study is aimed to reveal how a female character is depicted in the film and to prove that a female character also adopted masculinity traits. The theory of characterization by Boggs and Petrie is used to reveal the depiction of Maud?s character, while to prove that Maud Watts adopted masculinity traits, the writer used the theory of Bem Sex Role Inventory by Sandra L. Bem. This study is conducted as a qualitative content analysis, which adopts the technique of coding categories. The findings of this study reveal that as a female character, Maud Watts is not only adopted femininity traits but also masculinity traits. Maud?s character is depicted through the five tools of characterization according to Boggs and Petrie. Through her appearances, she is masculine and likeable. Through the dialogues, she is independent, confident, ambitious, assertive, competitive, sympathetic and loyal. Through her external action, Maud is ambitious, sympathetic, aggressive and loyal. Through her internal actions, she is sensitive and independent. Next, through reactions of other characters, she is smart, aggressive and ambitious. Those findings prove that as a female character, Maud also adopted masculinity traits. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkapkan bagaimana karakter perempuan digambarkan dalam film dan untuk membuktikan bahwa karakter perempuan juga mengadopsi sifat maskulinitas. Teori karakterisasi dari Boggs dan Petrie digunakan untuk mengungkap penggambaran karakter Maud, sementara untuk membuktikan bahwa Maud Watts mengadopsi sifat maskulinitas, penulis menggunakan teori Bem Sex Role Inventory dari Sandra L. Bem. Kajian ini dilakukan sebagai analisis isi kualitatif, yang mengadopsi teknik pengkodean kategori. Temuan kajian ini mengungkapkan bahwa sebagai karakter wanita, Maud tidak hanya mengadopsi sifat feminitas tetapi juga sifat maskulinitas. Karakter Maud digambarkan melalui lima alat karakterisasi menurut teori dari Boggs dan Petrie. Melalui penampilannya, Maud diketahui memiliki sifat maskulin dan menyenangkan. Melalui dialog, Maud mandiri, percaya diri, ambisius, tegas, kompetitif, simpatik, dan loyal. Melalui tindakan luarnya, Maud ambisius, simpatik, agresif, dan loyal. Melalui tindakan internalnya, dia sensitif dan mandiri. Selanjutnya, melalui reaksi dari karakter lain, Maud diketahui sebagai orang yang pintar, agresif dan ambisius. Temuan itu membuktikan bahwa sebagai karakter wanita, Maud juga mengadopsi sifat-sifat maskulinitas.

Abstract

Woman and man are often seen as two individuals with different characteristics. Women are labeled with feminine characteristics and men are labeled with masculine characteristics. Women often considered have lower status than men by not having the characteristics of men. However, the existence of masculinity traits in a female character is still possible to happen considering masculinity and femininity are concept created by society. By this research, the researcher aimed to analyze the masculinity and femininity traits of female character in Roth?s Insurgent Novel. This research has two purposes. The first is to analyze the masculine traits of Beatrice Prior, and the second is to analyze the feminine traits of Beatrice Prior. The researcher applied Sandra L Bem theory to answer the research questions. This research is under qualitative paradigm. Content analysis was applied in this research. The findings of this research showed that Beatrice Prior has eighteen masculine traits and five feminine traits. By the result of this research, it can be concluded that female individual can have more masculine traits or vise versa which then gives more understanding to the researcher. In addition, this research strengthens the idea that novel can be used as a tool to raise the awareness of the readers about th phenomena that happen in the society. Wanita dan pria seringkali dipandang sebagai dua individu dengan karakteristik berbeda. Wanita dilabeli dengan karakteristik feminin dan pria dilabeli dengan karakteristik maskulin. Wanita sering dianggap memiliki status lebih rendah daripada pria dengan tidak memiliki karakteristik pria. Namun, keberadaan ciri-ciri maskulinitas dalam karakter perempuan masih mungkin terjadi mengingat maskulinitas dan feminitas adalah konsep yang diciptakan oleh masyarakat. Dengan penelitian ini, peneliti bertujuan untuk menganalisis sifat-sifat maskulinitas dan femininitas karakter perempuan dalam Roth's Insurgent Novel. Penelitian ini memiliki dua tujuan. Yang pertama adalah untuk menganalisis sifat-sifat maskulin dari Beatrice Prior, dan yang kedua adalah untuk menganalisis sifat-sifat feminin dari Beatrice Prior. Peneliti menerapkan teori Sandra L Bem untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif. Penelitian ini berkaitan dengan teknik analisis konten. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Beatrice Prior memiliki delapan belas ciri maskulin dan lima ciri feminin. Dari hasil penelitian ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa individu perempuan dapat memiliki lebih banyak sifat maskulin atau sebaliknya yang kemudian memberikan lebih banyak pemahaman kepada peneliti. Selain itu, penelitian ini memperkuat gagasan bahwa novel dapat digunakan sebagai alat untuk meningkatkan kesadaran pembaca tentang fenomena yang terjadi di masyarakat.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Maleficent movie (2014) a movie directed by Robert Stromberg and written by Linda Woolverton. This movie adapted from Sleeping Beauty animation version in 1959. Maleficent movie tells about the human Kingdom and the Moors Kingdom that have never be peace. This research focused on analyzing a portrayal of a witch as heroine through Maleficent character. The purposes of this research were to analyze kind of witch characteristics portrayed through Maleficent character in Maleficent movie, and to analyze Maleficent character portrayed as a heroine in Maleficent movie. This research was a qualitative research. This research used two theories. The first is witch theory by Julian Goodare and the second one is hero theory by Kendra Cherry. The results of the research showed, that Maleficent character in Maleficent movie (2014) evil and good side. There are four concepts of witch such as demonic, village, folkloric, and envisioned witch. Maleficent movie goes into the folkloric witch category. There are seventh elements of hero, which Maleficent character as a heroine in Maleficent movie. First, people who become heroes tend to be concerned with the well being of others. Second, heroes are good at seeing from the perspective of others. Third, heroes are competent and confident. Fourth, heroes have a strong moral compass. Fifth, heroes have right skills. Sixth, heroes persist even in the face of fear, and keep working on their goals. The second result showed that Maleficent character is a heroine. Keywords: hero, Maleficent, portrayal, witch  ABSTRAK Film Maleficent (2014) adalah sebuah film yang disutradarai oleh Robert Stromberg dan ditulis oleh Linda Woolverton, film ini diadaptasi dari Sleeping Beauty versi animasi pada tahun 1959. Film Maleficent (2014) menceritakan tentang kerajaan Manusia dan kerajaan Moors yang tidak pernah berdamai. Penelitian ini fokus menganalisa penggambaran seorang wanita penyihir sebagai pahlawan melalui karakter Maleficent. Tujuan penelitian ini menganalisa jenis penggambaran karakteristik penyihir melalui karakter Maleficent di dalam film Maleficent. Penelitian ini merupakan penelirian kualitatif. Penelitian ini menggunaka dua teori. Yang pertama teori penyihir oleh Julian Goodare dan yang kedua teori pahlawan oleh Kendra Cheery. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa, yang pertama karakter Maleficent dalam film Maleficent (2014) sebagai seorang penyihir yang mempunyai sisi jahat dan baik. Ada empat konsep penyihir seperti demonic, village, folkloric, dan envisioned. Berdasarkan keempat konsep tersebut, film Maleficent masuk dalam kategori penyihir folkloric. Ada tujuh elemen kepahlawanan, dimana karakter Maleficent sebagai seorang pahlawan didalam film Maleficent (2014). Pertama, orang yang menjadi pahlawan cenderung memperhatikan kesejahteraan orang lain. Kedua, pahlawan pandai melihat sesuatu dari sudut pandang orang lain. Ketiga, pahlawan percaya diri. Keempat, pahlawan memiliki kompas moral yang kuat. Kelima, memiliki keterampilan. Abstract

Commonly, parents decide to have children to complete their live as part of their family. Then, how about the parents who have another reason with the presence of their children? It can make the children to have different thinking with other and it can make the children wonder about their true status or identity in family. It is because parents and their children do not have the similar purpose in their family. This situation happened in My Sister?s Keeper novel. The researcher choose to analyse Anna Fitzgerald in the novel because the life of family in My Sister?s Keeper novel was not like other family in general. The researcher analysed Anna Fitzgerald?s character through two theories to find out her identity. Erikson?s psychosocial development in the fifth stage was used to analyse of how Anna Fitzgerald got through the development as thirteen years old children in defining her own identity, successfully or not. It was because this stage discusses about the process of finding the true identity. Meanwhile, the researcher used Bowlby?s attachment theory to analyse of Anna?s relationship with her mother. Also, in this theory, the researcher only used one characteristic (proximity maintenance) to know about factor that influence of Anna?s position in Erikson?s fifth stage. This research was aimed to find out about the identity in fifth stage of psychosocial development of a child who lived uncommon situation and the factor that influenced her identity. The result of this research showed that Anna psychosocially experienced role confusion because she failed to know about her true identity. This situation influenced Anna?s relationship with her mother. As a result, she did not have fidelity as her basic virtue. Anna did not get the sense of safety and comfort from her relationship with Sara, as mother-daughter relationship.  Key words: Psychosocial Development, Attachment Theory

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe collective unconscious concept of Jungian critic contains archetypes that are unique part of the theory of human personality. The archetypes can be found in R and Julie character in Warm Bodies film. The purpose of this study is to find out some archetypes based on Jungian critics that related to both characters. Analytical psychology theory by Carl G Jung was used as the main theory to find out the archetypes that related to both characters. This study is categorized as literary criticism since this study is emphasized on the analysis of literary work. The primary data of this study are collected from Jonathan Levine?s Warm Bodies film. The result of this study is showed there were six archetypes found in the film. They were persona, shadow, anima, animus, hero, and self-archetypes. Keywords: Jungian psychoanalysis, archetypes, Warm Bodies film ABSTRAKKonsep kumpulan bawah sadar dari kritik Jung mengandung pola dasar yang merupakan bagian yang unik dari teori kepribadian manusia. Pola dasar ini dapat di temukan di dalam karakter R dan Julie dalam film Warm Bodies. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk menemukan beberapa pola dasar bedasarkan dari kritik jung yang terkait dengan kedua karakter. Psikologi analisis teori dari Carl G Jung digunakan sebagai teori utama untuk menemukan pola dasar yang terkait dengan kedua karakter. Penelitian ini di kategorikan sebagai kritik sastra sejak penelitian ini menekankan pada Analisa dari kerja sastra. Data utama dari penelitian ini di kumpulkan dari film Jonathan levine Warm Bodies. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada 6 pola dasar yang ditemukan di dalam film. 6 pola dasar itu adalah persona, shadow, anima, animus, hero, dan pola dasar self. Kata kunci : psikoanalisis Jung, pola dasar, film Warm Bodies
