Abstract

Abstract: Language is primarily speech. This paper discusses discourse markers. They are used for various purposes like to create a smooth flow of thoughts and to make the interlocutors easily understand. This way is supposed to be handy in improving the speaking ability. The data were collected from a sitcom entitled ‘Friends’. They were analyzed in a descriptive and qualitative method. The data were classified and then described their function contextually. There are seventeen discourse markers encountered in sitcom. Yeah is the most discourse marker used and by the way is the least discourse marker used in the sitcom. Discourse markers are used to make the language of conversation to be natural. They are useful for the students to learn Thus, the use of discourse markers should be inserted and learned in the textbook for high schools. Keyword: Discourse markers, Communication, Short Series Movie, Sitcom, ‘Friends’, English Language Teaching Abstrak: Penelitian ini membahas tentang penggunaan ‘discourse markers’. ‘Discourse markers’ ini digunakan untuk berbagai keperluan diantaranya untuk menciptakan kelancaran dalam hal pikiran dan membuat lawan bicara agar lebih mudah memahami. Cara ini diharapkan dapat berguna dalam usaha meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara. Data yang dikumpulkan berasal dari film serial pendek berjudul ‘Friends’. Data tersebut dianalisa dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif dan kualitatif. Data tersebut kemudian diklasifikasi dan dipaparkan berdasarkan fungsinya. Ada tujuh belas ‘discourse markers’ yang ditemukan di dalam serial tersebut. ‘Yeah’ adalah ‘discourse marker’ yang paling banyak digunakan sedangkan ‘by the way’ adalah ‘discourse marker’ yang paling sedikit digunakan dalam serial tersebut. ‘Discourse markers’ digunakan dalam percakapan agar komunikasi dapat berlangsung lebih alami. Hal ini berguna bagi para siswa untuk dipelajari. Oleh karena itu, penggunaan ‘discourse markers’ seharusnya dimasukkan dan dipelajari di dalam buku pelajaran untuk tingkat atas (SMA). Abstract

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to develop listening-speaking techniqueforelementary school. Development research was used in this study, and model that was used based on ADDIE model. The data were collected through observation, interview, content analysis, focus group discussion, and from the experts’ validation. The participants of this study werea primary English language teacher and thestudents of SD Negeri 17Singkawang Tengah Grade 5. The results of this study revealed that the teaching technique was needed by the teacher, the students, the school, and the curriculum of SD Negeri 17 Singkawang Tengah. This teaching technique also could make students learn actively during their learning. The experts also recommended this teaching technique could be used in teaching English to the elementary school students. It can be concluded that the teaching technique is effective to improve students’ activeness during their learning and recommended by the experts.   Key Words: Elementary School, Development Research, ADDIE Abstrak:Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan teknik mengajar speaking dan listening pada mata pelajaran bahasa Inggris di jenjang sekolah dasar. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian pengembangan, dan model yang digunakan adalah model ADDIE. Data diperoleh melalui observasi, wawancara, analisis isi, diskusi kelompok, dan validasi ahli. Partisipan dari penelitian ini adalah guru bahasa Inggris dan siswa kelas 5 SD Negeri 17 Singkawang Tengah. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa teknik mengajar ini diperlukan oleh guru, siswa, sekolah, dan sesuai dengan kurikulum SD Negeri 17 Singkawang Tengah. Tehnik mengajar ini juga dapat meningkatkan keaktifan siswa selama belajar. Para ahli juga merekomendasikan bahwa tehnik mengajar ini dapat digunakan untuk mengajar bahasa Inggris di jenjang sekolah dasar. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa tehnik ini efektif untuk meningkatkan keaktifan siswa selama belajar dan direkomendasikan oleh para ahli.   Kata Kunci: Sekolah Dasar, Penelitian Pengembangan, ADDIE

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to investigate how effective Twenty Questions Game is to teach yes/no questions in simple present tense to Year-7 students of? SMP Negeri 10 Pontianak? in Academic Year 2014/2015. This research was one of pre-experimental design, namely one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample was a cluster. They were Year-7 Class F, which consisted of 28 students. The tool used for collecting the data was pre-test and post-test. The test was an objective test with multiple choice items. The research findings indicate that the students? mean score in post-test is 94.05 higher than their mean score in pre-test which is 68.92. The effect size of the treatment is categorized as strong, with 1.92 that is larger than 1.00. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of Twenty Questions Game to teach Yes/No questions in Simple Present Tense to Year-7 students of? SMP Negeri 10 Pontianak? Academic Year 2014/2015 was effective.  Keywords: Twenty Questions Game, Yes/No Questions   Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk  mengetahui seberapa efektif Twenty Questions Game untuk mengajar Yes/No Questions dalam simple present tense pada siswa kelas 7 di SMP Negeri 10 Pontianak Tahun Akademik 2014/2015. Penelitian ini menggunakan pra-eksperimental, yaitu  dalam bentuk one group pre-test post-test. Sampel dari penelitian ini adalah sebuah kelompok. Mereka adalah siswa kelas 7F yang terdiri dari 28 siswa. Alat yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data adalah pre-test dan post-test. Test tersebut berupa objektif test dengan item pilihan berganda. Hasil dari penelitian,ini mengindikasikan bahwa nilai rata-rata siswa pada post-test sebesar 94.05 lebih tinggi dibandingkan nilai rata-rata siswa pada pre-test yang mana sebesar 68.92. Effect size dari perlakuan dikategorikan sebagai ?kuat?, dengan 1.92 lebih besar dari 1.00. Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan Twenty Questions Game untuk mengajar Yes/No Questions dalam simple present tense pada siswa kelas 7 di SMP Negeri 10 Pontianak Tahun Akademik 2014/2015 adalah efektif.   Kata kunci: Twenty Questions Game, Yes/No Questions

Abstract

Abstract: This research was to investigate the correlation of interest in listening to English songs and listening achievement to Semester - 3 Students of English Language Education Study Program, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Tanjungpura University, in Academic Year 2015/2016. It was a correlation study. The research participants were 54 students. The data were collected by administering closed-ended questionnaires and multiple choice questions of listening comprehension test. Then, the data were calculated by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient formula. Based on the research finding, the r (correlation coefficient) value of the two variables was 0.769. The obtained t-value was higher than the value of t-table at 1% (0.01) level of significance with degree of freedom (df) = 52 (8.658 > 2.673). It finds out there is a significant correlation of interest in listening to English songs and listening achievement.   Keywords: correlation, interest, English Songs, listening achievement Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui sejauh mana korelasi ketertarikan mendengarkan lagu-lagu berbahasa Inggris terhadap kemampuan mendengar mahasiswa semester 3 Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan, Universitas Tanjungpura, Tahun Ajaran 2015/2016. Penelitiaan ini merupakan penelitiaan korelasi. Jumlah sampel pada penelitian ini adalah 54 mahasiswa. Data di kumpulkan menggunakan kuestioner bentuk tertutup dan soal komprehensif mendengarkan berbentuk pilihan ganda. Kemudian, data dihitung  menggunakan rumus Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, nilai r (koefisien korelasi) pada kedua variabel adalah 0.769. Nilai t yang diperoleh lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan nilai t yang terdapat dalam t-table pada tingkat signifikan 1% (0.01) dengan derajat kebebasan = 52 (8.658 > 2.673). Hal ini mengindikasikan ada korelasi yang signifikan antara ketertarikan mendengarkan lagu-lagu berbahasa Inggris terhadap kemampuan mendengar mahasiswa.   Kata kunci: korelasi, ketertarikan, lagu ? lagu berbahasa Inggris, kemampuan mendengarkan

Abstract

 Abstract This research aimed at improving students? ability in writing descriptive text through mind mapping collaborative writing technique. The data were taken from students of X B in SMA Nusantara Indah Sintang in the Academic Year 2016-2017. The finding showed that this technique could make the students enjoyed the writing activity and generated the students? motivation to get involved in the writing process. The students were happy worked collaboratively with other student; moreover, the students could share their difficulties among the activity. Mind mapping collaborative writing could help the students to improve their writing descriptive texts and motivate the students to be active in the writing activity. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa tehnik ini dapat membuat siswa merasa nyaman dan memicu motivasi mereka dalam kegiatan menulis. Para siswa senang bekerja sama denga siswa lainnya, terlebih mereka dapat saling berbagi kesulitan selama kegiatan menulis. Tehnik ?mind mapping collaborative writing? dapat membantu siswa meningkatkan kemampuan menulis teks deskriptif dan dapat memotivasi siswa untuk berperan aktif dalam kegiatan menulis. Abstract

Abstract: This research was a pre experimental research with one group pretest posttest design. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effectiveness of using photograph series to increase students' skill of writing a report text to Year-8 students of SMPN 12 Sungai Rasau Singkawang in Academic Years 2015/2016. There were 4 classes for the Year-8, each of which consisted of 22 to 23 students. The participants of this research were 22 students of Class 8C. The data were collected with the written test measure the students ‘achievement of writing report text. The data was collected by measurement technique. The result of mean score of the students in pretest before treatment was 55.9 and the students mean score of posttest after treatment was 71.13. The research finding shows it is effective to teach writing using photograph series.   Keywords: The Effectiveness, Photograph Series, Writing Report Text   Abstrak: Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian pra eksperimental dengan satu kelompok desain pretest posttest. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui efektivitas penggunaan foto ber-seri untuk meningkatkan keterampilan siswa dalam menulis teks laporan kepada Tahun-8 siswa dari SMPN 12 Sungai Rasau Singkawang di Akademik Tahun 2015/2016. Terdapat  4 kelas untuk kelas-8, yang mana masing-masing terdiri dari 22 dan 23 siswa. Para peserta penelitian ini adalah 22 siswa dari Kelas 8C. Data dikumpulkan dengan tes mengukur kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks laporan. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik pengukuran. Email: endahworohapsari@rocketmail.com Abstract: The purpose of this research was to investigate the level of the effectiveness of team-pair-solo to teach reading comprehension of explanatory text to Year-X students of ?SMA Negeri 8 Pontianak? in Academic Year 2014/2015. This research was a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The population of this research were students of Year-X MIA. The samples of this research were Year-X MIA1. The technique of data collecting was measurement technique. The data were collected by applying pre-test and post-test through team-pair-solo to teach reading comprehension of explanatory text. The students score on pre-test and post-test was analyzed by using SPSS. The final computation shows that the effect size of the treatment was 0.904 (> 0.5) and considered very effective. It proves that the use of team-pair-solo was highly-effective to teach reading comprehension of explanatory text to Year-X MIA1 students. Key Words: Team-Pair-Solo, Reading Comprehension, Explanatory Text.   Abstrak: penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tingkat keefektifan pengunaan tehnik team-pair-solo dalam mengajarkan pemahaman membaca teks explanatory kepada siswa kelas X ?SMA Negeri 8 Pontianak? pada tahun ajaran 2014/2015. Penelitian ini adalah sebuah penelitian eksperimental dengan rancanggan satu grup pre-test dan post-test. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa-siswa kelas X ilmu alam. Sample penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas X ilmu alam satu. Teknik pengumpulan data adalah teknik pengukuran. Data-data diambil dengan menerapkan pre-test dan post-test melalui penggunaan teknik team-pair-solo dalam mengajarkan pemahaman membaca teks explanatory. Nilai siswa pada pre-test dan post-test kemudian dianalisa menggunakan SPSS. Perhitungan akhir menunjukkan bahwa effect size dari perlakuan adalah 0.904 (> 0.5) dan dikatakan sangat efektif. Hal tersebut membuktikan bahwa penerapan tecknik team-pair-solo sangat efektif untuk mengajar pemahaman membaca teks explanatory untuk siswa kelas X ilmu alam satu. Abstract

Infection of Begomovirus has caused leaf curl disease in tomato. This infection has significantly impact on yield losses of tomato production. Recently, in Indonesia there was no effectively way to control this disease.  The use of resistant tomato variety is one of strategies to control this virus. Genetic engineering technology gives an opportunity to develop the transgenic tomato resistant to Begomovirus through pathogen derived resistance (PDR) approach. The objectives of this study were to construct the  Begomovirus AV1 candidate gene in the pBI121 and to introduce the construct into tobacco plant genome through Agrobacterium tumefaciens vector. A series activites in gene construct have been conducted include PCR amplification of AV1 gene using a pair of specific primer, cloning the gene into pGEM-T easy, transformation of the clone into Escherichia coli DH5α competent cell, construct the gene into pBI121, and transform the construct into A. tumefaciens. Leaf segments of in vitro tobacco plant were transformed by co-cultivation with A. tumefaciens containing ToLCV-AV1 construct. In the research activitiy, Indonesian  Begomovirus  AV1 gene  was  successfully amplified and inserted in expression vector plasmid pBI121. Tobacco transformants carrying kanamycin-resistant gene (nptII gene) were regenerated and established in the glasshouse. Those transformant plants are expected containing the AV1 gene.

Abstract

Three rhizobacteria (Bacillus polymixa  BG25,  Pseudomonas fluorescens  PG01 and Serratia liquefaciens SG01) which inhibited the conidia germination of Colletotrichum capsici  and produced the phytohormone indoleacetic acid (IAA) were selected and evaluated as biocontrol agents for controlling Colletotrichum capsici, the causal agent of hot pepper anthracnose and for improving the growth, yield and seed quality of hot pepper in glasshouse and field conditions. Two cultivars of hot pepper, cv. Lokal Brebes and cv. Tit Super were also used in this experiment. The result of the experiment showed that seed treatments with P. fluorescens PG01 either alone or in combination with B. polymixa BG25 increase yields and seed quality under glasshouse and field conditions. However, the most effective treatment was the combination of both agents. Moreover, biological seed  treatment with P. fluorescens PG01 either alone or in combination with B. polymixa BG25 led to induction of resistance against C. capsici, as a result of increase in peroxidase activity and biosynthesis of phytoalexins that have been considered as resistance mechanisms against plant diseases.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to find out the level of the effectiveness of using crossword puzzle to enrich the vocabulary of Year-8 students of “SMPN 16 Pontianak” in Academic Year 2014/2015. This research was a pre-experimental study. The sample was a purposive sampling, that is, Class VIII E that consists of 36 students. The data were collected from the pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using Effect Size (ES) formula. The research finding shows that the effect size of the treatment is 1.27 (> 1.00). It is categorized “strong”. It indicates that crossword puzzle is very effective to teach vocabulary to Year-8 students. Key words: crossword puzzle, teaching vocabulary Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tingkat efektifitas dari crossword puzzle untuk memperkaya kosa kata siswa kelas 8 SMPN 16 Pontianak tahun ajaran 2014/2015. Penelitian ini adalah sebuah penelitian pre-experimental. Teknik pengambilan sampel yang digunakan adalah purposive sampling. Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII E yg terdiri atas 36 siswa. Data-data di ambil dengan menerapkan rumus ES (tingkat efektifitas). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tingkat efektifitas dari penggunaan crossword puzzle adalah 1.27 (> 1.00). Hasil ini dikategorikan memiliki efek yang kuat. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa crossword puzzle sangat efektif utuk mengajarkan kosa kata kepada siswa kelas 8. Kata kunci: crossword puzzle, mengajarkan vocabulary
