Abstract

This paper aims to examine how the secular media in Surakarta represent Islam in the case of Charlie Hebdo. Therefore, this study used discourse analysis of Theo van Leeuwen focusing on how the subject or actor of the show in the media. This study concluded that the media represent Islam not only with “Western ideology” through idioms such as radical Islamist militants and terrorists, but also with "Islamic ideology". It is done through the construction of Islam as a religion of moderation and delegitimize Charlie Hebdo as magazine satyr abusing freedom. Various strategies are used ranging from strategy passivation to interdetermination. In this case, there are two poles of attraction in both media, namely the Western and Islamic ideology. If both media are quoting from Western sources, the Western ideology dominates the media narrative. Conversely, when both media used Islamic sources, the influence of Islamic ideology dominates the narrative of both media.

Abstract

On the one one hand, the Bajo people are well-known as ?the sea people? who have their own indigenous belief system ? belief in the Lord of the Sea. On the other hand, they also acknowledge themselves as Muslims. Thus, the religious identity of the Bajo people reflects a unique combination of Islamic teachings and their indigenous beliefs. This unique combination is not only expressed in their religious life, in their rituals and worship practices, but also in the values found in their customary practices (adat) as a guiding system for their life. This paper examines the construction and contestation of the religious identity of the Bajo people, especially how they construct their identities in relation to their natural, social, and religious environments. The contestation of the Bajo religious identity covers three aspects: the contestation of the Islam of ?the sea people? against the Islam of ?the land people?, the contenstation of the ?official? Islam against the ?traditional? Islam, and the challenges of modernity, especially the commodification of the Bajo religious expressions. This contestation, in turn, reconstructs their religious identity into a more adaptive one.

Abstract

Abstract

------------------------Mass media are not free channels because they sometimes portrait and interprete news unlike its reality. Moreover, mass media are frequently construct a reality which are that out of context. It is not surprising; therefore, that every day an ongoing case-basis can be seen how the same event are treated differently by the mass media. This paper  assesses the issues of corruption which invoves women. Coverage of women perpetrators of corruption are heavily empasised bigger with interests outside substance of corroption itself. For example, reporting oncorruption cases invloving Gayus Tambunan and Angelina Sondakh have different presentation. Gayus Tambunan was always positioned as an intelligent person, could face case, tough, and not delt with domestic isssues; while the news over Anggelina Sondakh always associated with her personal life.

Abstract

Indonesian anthropology was founded in 1957 and developed since then in various universities. After more than fifty years of inhabiting these lecture halls, anthropology?s orientation as a science has transformed from a discipline that bestows on graduates the ability to think into one in which graduates are prepared for a career of conductingfield research ordered by others. This article reflects on the shifts that have occurred in anthropology, focusing on three of the field?s central figures in Indonesia: Koentjaraningrat, Masri Singarimbun, and Parsudi Suparlan. During the lives of these three pioneers, anthropology playeda central role in critically evaluating humanitarian projects, and as such anthropologists frequently served to protect the weak and marginal. Anthropologists were on the frontlines of every discussion regarding the future of the nation, enabling anthropological perspectives to be accommodated in policy. Today, anthropologists seem locked into their own academic spaces. The results of anthropological field research are often said to provide unique and interesting?but irrelevant?stories. This article recommends a fundamental transformation in the curriculum, allowing the politics of science to be reconsidered and reformulated to ensure anthropology maintains a central role in resolving future humanitarian problems.

Abstract

Abstract

This study compares the folktale “The Story of Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp” from the Arabian Nights, and the animated film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation under the title “Aladdin” (1992). The differences of those two stories in two different medias shows the shifts of ideology and discourse. The study applies Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, by applying the three stages of analysis.  The first level is micro level, on the language practice. In the second level, mezo level, discusses the discourse practice that covers the intertextuality of ideas, concept as the reference in delivering the ideas. In the third level, macro level, it interprets the social context of   particular events, especially the social practice in exercising their power. The finding shows that the Disney’s Aladdin campaigns ideology that refers to the American values such as freedom and American heroism. Besides, the discourse of Arab barbarism is developed in line with the practice of   stereotyping such as labeling the Arab people as barbaric, bad, silly and wicked as well as dangerous Arabs. These imply to the removals of the Islamic messages and values that exists in the original tales of Arabian Nights. The Disney’s Aladdin completely removes the Islamic messages and values, and changes them into ‘American values’.
