Abstract

Perekat fenol formaldehida merupakan perekat yang dipakai dalam pembuatan kayu lapis eksterior. Untuk mengurangi biaya dapat ditambahkan bahan lain pada perekat tersebut. Pada penelitian ini dilakukan penambahan tanin dari 3 macam tumbuhan. Tujuan penelitian untuk mengetahui pengaruh derajat keasaman (pH) tanin mangium, mimosa dan quebracho sebagai campuran perekat fenol formaldehida terhadap sifat perekat dan terhadap keteguhan rekat kayu lapis tusam.Pengaruh pH terhadap sifat perekat adalah: semakin basa pH tanin, maka perekat semakin menggumpal dengan demikian waktu gelatinasi perekat semakin pendek. Nilai keteguhan rekat kayu lapis tertinggi tercapai pada perlakuan pH tanin 8. Semakin tinggi nilai pH, keteguhan rekat kayu lapis cenderung makin menurun. Namun demikian semua perlakuan pH dari ketiga jenis tanin masih memenuhi standar Jepang untuk kayu lapis tipe I.

Abstract

Pleurotus ostreatus is well known as an oyster mushroom that is very popular because of its high nutritional value and pharmaceutical component. The aim of this research was to study the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of exopolysaccharides from P. ostreatus grown on liquid medium.The P. ostreatus was grown on Mushroom Complete Medium (MCM) containing various types of Carbon (C) and Nitrogen (N) sources, i.e glucose, lactose, amylose and sucrose as a Carbon sources and yeast extract, polypeptone, NH4Cl, and NH4NO3 as a Nitrogen sources. The results showed that sucrose and yeast extract were the best source of Carbon and Nitrogen that produced 208 and 100 mg/L of exopolysaccharides.  The exopolysaccharide exhibited antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis and Escherichiacoli. However, it did not have antimicrobial activity against Saccharomyces cerevisiae.  In addition, the exopolysaccharide indicated to have an antioxidant activity.

Abstract

As a natural fiber and agricultural by-product, corn stalks (Zea mays saccharata) is considered as an alternative raw material to produce particleboard. Corn stalks is a good source of lignocelluloses, renewable and low cost. This research was aimed to investigate the characteristics of corn stalk particleboard with citric acid as adhesive. This study also evaluated bonding mechanism particle with citric acid and the bonds between celluloses derived corn stalk with citric acid. The boards were manufactured under the hot pressing temperature 200 oC for 10 min. The citric acid concentration was varied in 0, 15, 20 and 25 wt%. The board size and target density were (25 x 25 x 0.9) mm3 and 0.8 g.cm-3. Results showed that the physical properties of particleboards improved with increasing citric acid concentration up to 20 wt%. At the optimum citric acid content of 20 wt% could provide particleboards with the modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity and internal bonding satisfied the requirement of the 13 type of the JIS A 5908 (2003) standard. Infrared (IR) spectral analysis from board which manufactured from isolated cellulose was mixed citric acid and pressed on temperature 200 oC showed the presence of ester linkages that the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups of citric acid had reacted with the hydroxyl groups of corn stalk cellulose.Keywords : citric acid, corn stalk, concentration, particleboard, adhesive

Abstract

Chemical constituents of the essential oil of water and steam distillates of surian heartwood (Toona sinensis) were analyzed by a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer. Then, the oil was investigated in vitro anticancer bioassay for its possible antioxidant activity by DPPH free radical scavenging and antiproliferative effects by MTT method using Raji lymphoma cancer cell lines (ATCC CCL 86), HeLa cervical cancer cell lines (ATCC CCL2), and Vero normal cell lines (ATCC CCL 81). The essential oil yield from water and steam distillates of surian heartwood was 0.4% (w/w). Thirty-two compounds were identified, that consisted mainly of oxygenated sesquiterpenes (77%). The most representative compounds were spathulenol (21%), isospathulenol (7%), α-cadinol (7%), β-cedrenoxide (6%), and torreyol (5%). The oil showed less effective antioxidant, but the oil had high antiproliferative effects on Raji and HeLa cancer cells with IC50 28 and 134 μg ml-1, respectively when compared to Vero normal cells (IC50 1412 μg ml-1). Our findings suggest that the essential oil of surian heartwood might be considered as a potentially anticancer agent on human cancer cells, especially lymphoma cancer cells.Key words: antioxidant activity, antiproliferative effects, cancer cell lines, essential oil, Toona sinensis

Abstract

Lignin   is  the  polymer   which   has  been   degraded    and  removed    in pulping  processes.     The occurance   of lignin  as  a waste  product   in pulp  mills  has  made   it an  attractive   raw  material  for adhesives    eversince    the  beginning   of  the  sulfite  pulping   of  wood.   Therefore,    the  isolation   and its  characterization   are   important  lo  achieve    effective    lignin   removal.    In  this   investigation,  isolation   and  characterization   of black  liquor  and  sengon   lignin  were  carried  out.  the  isolation of  lignin   was   performed   by  precipitation   of  lignin   from  black   liquor   and  the  preparation   of  lignin   by way  of  cellulose   dissolution   from   sengon   (Paraserianthes    falcataria  (L) Nielsen).  the  recovery   of  lignin  was  evaluated   in  an  allempt  to  optimize  recovery    at  high  purity   by  qualitative  analyses   (ie.   UV - and  IR - spectrometry)   and  quantitative  analyses   (ie.  percentage   of pure  lignin, equivalent    weight,    ash   content,    etc).    lndulin-AT     (commercial   lignin) is  used   as   standard   of comparison.the  result   indicates   that  black   liquor   lignin   is  guayacil    lignin  with  16,8   -  17,4%   methoxyl  content,    2.0   - 2.1  %  phenolic    hydroxyl  content,    11.  7 -  11.9%     ash  content   and  percentage    of pure   lignin  about   64. 2  -  71.1   %.  this   result   is similar  with  indulin   - AT.    the   result  of sengon lignin  analyses show   that  it is syringyl   lignin  with  26.7  - 27.2%   methoxyl   content,    0.8  -  0.9% phenolic   hidroxyl   content,    25.1   - 25. 6%  ash  content  and  percentage    of pure   lignin  about  36. 1 -46.2%.   Side  effect of  these  result  were  reactivity  of sengon   lignin  is  lower  than  lignin from   black liquor and indulin - AT,  therefore,   sengon  lignin has no potential  as raw material for adhesives.

Abstract

It has been known that lignin can be used as plywood adhesive for exterior purpose. The sources of lignin are black liquor indulin-AT (commercial lignin).A study on lignin formaldehyde  resin making from  black liquor and indulin-AT was done and the results were  used to predict  the effect of lignin  isolate type and L/F  mole ratio on plywood bonding strength. The results show taht the type of lignin isolate and L/F  mole ratio have highly significant  effect on plywood bonding strength. The mole ratio L/F of 1 : 1.50 and 1:1.75 by lignin isolate from  indulin-AT result in plywood bonding strength about 7.5 kg/cm2 and 8.8 kg/cm2,   respectively. The bonding strength of these plywood conforms with the 1983 Japanese standard for exterior purpose.

Abstract

Abstract

It has been known that lignin can be used as plywood adhesive for exterior purpose.
