Abstract

This research is intended to show the sustainability of epic in latest years of human history through the most phenomenal fantasy in American literature, A Game of Thrones. Along with the capability of human beings in thinking dearly and sensibly, it is commonsensical that people tend to free themselves from irrationality. The reality shows, however, that the existence of epic fantasy still has power in appealing audiences or readers. This is the case with A Game of Thrones written by George RR Martin who was given the award of One of The Most Influential People in 2011 by Time magazine. This qualitative march, using genre approach, finds out that in order to be compatible with today's society, an epic seen in A Game of Thrones, which is commonly known as a story centering on the legendary hero and his heroic deed in oral folk tradition, keeps its power as an epic fantasy narrative through certain archetypes and formulas. Through genre analysis using semiotic approach, the research brings about conclusions that the elements of high fantasy, elements built through rational representation, and a smart combination of convention and invention brings about its popularity. It is also concluded that there is a close relationship between the myth and the mode of people living even in the most modern context.

Abstract

In the popular literature context, this study aims to investigate: (1) how the formulation of the characterization of Dexter in the television serial Dexter violates the tradition of literary characterization, and (2) how the formula of moral values is dramatized through Dexter, who is a sociopath, psychopath, serial killer, and person without moral. The research object was the television serial Dexter, which ranks five in popularity in the world. The data were collected by documenting 84 episodes of the serial having been broadcast since 2006. They were analyzed by means of content analysis and qualitative descriptive techniques. Based on the findings, the conclusions are as follows. First, there is a violation or anachronism of characterization through the main character in the serial. Second, the dramatized moral values still contain conventional values although they are in different forms.

Abstract

Individualisme dianggap merupakan inti budaya Amerika. Individualisme dalam arti penekanan terhadap kemampuan diri sendiri di atas kelompok atau negara telah banyak dibahas dan didramatisasikan oleh banyak penulis dari masa awal sejarah negara Amerika dan dalam film laga Amerika individualisme tercermin dalam citra-citra verbal maupun non-verbal dari penggambaran sifat tokoh hero dalam melawan tokoh jahat. Akan tetapi, individualisme dan kepercayaan pada kemampuan sendiri sering memunculkan sikap terlalu percaya diri dan ingin menang sendiri. Dalam hubungan ini, seorang hero dalam film selalu digambarkan sebagai sosok penyendiri, seorang individu yang berseberangan dengan masyarakat. Hal itu tidak berarti bahwa individu dan masyarakat adalah dua entitas yang benar-benar terpisah karena setiap individu adalah produk kondisi sosial. Konflik antara individu dan masyarakat lebih disebabkan oleh perbedaan karakter dan pola antara keduanya. Individu membutuhkan kebebasan untuk mempertahankan identitasnya, sedangkan masyarakat memerlukan kerelaan individu untuk menyerahkan sebagian kebebasannya demi tegaknya keteraturan bersama. Dari karakterisasi, narasi, dan tema yang disajikan dalam film film laga dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggambaran sosok hero yang soliter dalam film-film laga lebih merupakan romantisme yang hidup dalam kenangan bawah sadar orang Amerika terhadap kehidupan ideal seorang hero yang individualis yang memitoskan kembali individualisme yang tidak lekang oleh waktu.

Abstract

The Jerry Springer Show adalah salah satu program talk show televisi Amerika yang dapat dikategorikan sebagai tabloid talk show, trash talk show, atau istilah lain yang menunjukkan betapa acara ini menyajikan topik persoalan yang vulgar. Meskipun acara ini adalah acara yang banyak dianggap orang tidak layak ditonton, ini masih tetap diminati di Amerika terbukti masih berlangsung dan telah menyajikan lebih dari 3.000 episode. Ternyata acara ini tidak hanya diminati oleh orang Amerika, tetapi juga oleh orang Inggris karena acara ini pun sampai mengilhami pembuatan opera yang dipentaskan di beberapa teater Inggris. Ada tiga realitas yang sebetulnya merupakan simbolisasi yang dapat dimaknai di sini. Pertama, bermoral tidaknya suatu acara tidaklah menentukan minat orang dalam menonton tayangan televisi karena berhasil tidaknya suatu acara dalam masyarakat tergantung dari kekuatan sosial acara tersebut. Kedua, makin tinggi nilai kebebasan suatu masyarakat, makin tinggi pula tuntutan masyarakat terhadap pemenuhan kepuasan penonton televisi. Ketiga, karya imajiner yang ditayangkan di televisi akan dianggap sebagai suatu kebenaran apabila dikemas dalam program yang diterima dalam masyarakat sebagai program informasi dan bukan hiburan meskipun kandungan di dalamnya adalah hiburan.

Abstract

This article explores the transformation of the matrilineal system within Minangkabau children?s carito. In general, children?s carito are considered bedtime stories that convey positive values; as such, research into them has focused on values. Children?s carito have been collected through interviews with storytellers who retain the carito within their memories. The memories of these storytellers have changed together with changes in the storytellers themselves and in their environments. To explore the changes in the matrilineal system within the carito, one story has been analyzed over three generations (from grandparents, parents, to children). Changes in the matrilineal system are evidenced through the carito characters? emergence and disappearance, their actions, and their interactions with their mothers, who?as in the matrilineal system?are central within the carito. Changes, differences, and behaviors within the carito indicate the dynamic transformation of communal families to conjugal families and ultimately nuclear families.

Abstract

Berbagai pertentangan tentang Studi Amerika sebagai suatu disiplin ilmu pada umumnya muncul di sekitar masalah apakah Studi Amerika mempunyai teori dan metode yang jelas. Sebagai disiplin ilmu, seharusnya Studi Amerika mempunyai teori dan metode. Akan tetapi, dengan nama disiplin yang memuat nama bangsa, istilah Studi Amerika menimbulkan pertanyaan kenapa disiplin itu menunjuk nama bangsa tidak seperti disiplin yang lain yang namanya menunjukkan sesuatu yang bersifat umum. Oleh karenanya, teori dan metode Studi Amerika sering dianggap terlalu provincial dan chauvinistic (Huber, 1968).

Abstract

Identity is shaped through values and values are maintained through ideology. Ideology is therefore important for every nation in making its vision into realization. The research is intended to find out (1) the values that African-American would like to fight for, through which they try to create their own identity, (2) how African-Americans, as minority, tried to build their identity in 1960s, and (3) the common ground of the effort in sustaining their ideology in that they can build their identity. This is a qualitative and interdisciplinary research in the constructivist paradigm in which qualitative method is used in gathering the data and descriptive qualitative is used in analyzing the data. This research reveals that the ways in establishing the African-American identities are through sports, social practices and music. In relation to the notion of ideology, the spreading and strengthening of African-American ideology, both cultural and psudo ideology, are done through humanitarian actions to fight the discrimination they endure. This research determines that the synthesis in creating identity among the whites is through individual freedom and responsibility in which freedom is the common ground of human existence marking the primary force of the existence of identity.

Abstract

This research was based on the powerful function of the aesthetics in the society. Novel as an art work also functioned as an arena in which ideologies contest and negotiate. The research intended to show a mechanism underlining novel to have a significant hegemonic role. The material object was taken from Islamic popular novel namely “Ketika Mas Gagah Pergi dan Kembali”. The formal object was the negotiation of ideology which focused on the contact between intellectual and subaltern leading to the formation of a new compromised cultural practice. By applying the theory of hegemony in discussing the contestation and negotiation of ideologies in the novel, it is found that the contestation and negotiation between hegemonic and subaltern ideology lead to the occurrence of a compromise between the interest of the intellectual and the subaltern. The interest of the subaltern is based on the nostalgia of the past and fear or uncertain condition of future which lay in the domain of imagination that structures the novel.

Abstract

The development of internet which provides hypertext information results in significant change in many aspects of life. Literature is not exceptional. The argument is therefore, since hypertext literature is presented in different mode, it must propose different kind of reading. Based on reception and reader-response or aesthetic response theories, this study finds out that there is a change in the way readers enjoy Pride and Prejudice. The process of reading become active experience because it allows the readers to take control of the narrative. The result is that hypertext Pride and Prejudice provides different meaning to the readers. The novel exists by providing not only the narratives but also informations on the narratives. The study finds out that there is a change in how the hypertext Pride and Prejudice wanted and needed. The hypertext does not come from the enjoyment in the process of reading the narratives but the satisfaction in getting the information on the narratives. It is not reading for pleasure that is traditionally offered by romantic novels but the satisfaction in the process of getting information on the text since self actualization in the readers is fulfilled.
