Abstract

This paper analyzes whether the expansionary fiscal policy funded by issuing debt instruments in financial markets will increase short-term interest rates. If  the expansionary fiscal policy increases interest rates, which decrease private spending especially investment, crowding out occurs. This is interesting because global economic crisis has encouraged many countries to run large budget deficits to stimulate the economy. Indonesia has also run budget deficit during this crisis and even in years before. The impact of such a policy can be significant because Indonesia’s debt market is still narrow and shallow. Therefore, its capability of absorbing the government debt instruments without influencing the private sector funding is limited. This study tests whether the crowding out occurs in Indonesia using a time series econometric model inspired by Cebula and Cuellar’s model. The Cointegration Regression and Error Correction Model (ECM) are used in this study. Monthly data from April 2000 to December 2008 are used for overnight real interbank call money interest rates, real net government bond issues in trading, real narrow money supply, real rate of one-month Certificate of Bank Indonesia, growth of Gross Domestic Product, and real net international capital flows. This empirical study shows that the crowding out problem occurred in Indonesia during the period. This indicates that financing budget deficit in Indonesia by issuing debt instruments in the financial markets has a negative impact on the private sector.

Abstract

The objectives of the study was to observe relationship between determinant parameters of iodine status and determinant parameter of selenium status among the elementary school children in determining IDD problem. The study was conducted in two villages of coastal area of Pasuruan, East Java Province using 24 samples in endemic area of IDD and 22 samples in non endemic area of IDD. Iodine status was measured based on urinary excretion of iodine (UEI) and thyroid hormones consentration (TSH, FT4, T3) while selenium status masured using selenium content of blood serum. The results of the study show that iodine status as measured by UEI and FT4 of samples living in endemic area (8,3% normal and 95,8% normal respectively) are statistically different from those in non endemic area (100% normal and 95,4% normal respectively) while iodine status as measured by TSH and T3 in endemic area (87,5% normal and 95,8% normal respectively) are not statistically different from those in non endemic area (100% normal and 100% normal respectively). The average selenium content in serum owned by samples in two areas are not statistically different. However if the data was classified based on normality categories, it is shown that samples in endemic area of IDD have lower category in selenium status (79,19%) compared to those in non endemic area of IDD (9,09%). There are significant correlation between T3 and FT4,, T3 and selenium content of serum, and between FT4 and selenium content of serum in non endemic area. The result of regression analyses of joined samples from endemic and non endemic areas showed that selenium content of serum and UEI were closely related to iodine and selenium intake (r=0,402 and r=0,510).Keywords: selenium, iodine status, school children

Abstract

Adolescents prefer to consume high fat and high sugar food compare to healthy food such as fruit and vegetable. High fat and high sugar food are risk factor of diabetes mellitus development, especially in adolescents whose parents had diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to analyze the difference of eating habit and nutritional status between adolescents with DM parents and non DM parents. This was a cross-sectional research included 42 adolescents as sample that divided into 21 adolescents with DM parents and 21 adolescents with non DM parents. The sample was chosen randomly using simple random sampling technique. The difference of each variable was analyzed using Independent T-test and Mann Whitney (α = 0,05). The result showed that there was no difference of high glycemic index food consumption (p = 0,229) and fruit – vegetable consumption (p = 0,14) between adolescents with DM parents and non DM parents. However, adolescents with DM parents were eat high GI food more often compared to adolescents with non DM parents. There was a difference of BMI (Body Mass Index) between adolescents with DM parents and non DM parents (p = 0,036). The research concludes that most of adolescents with DM parents were obese. The adolescents need to reduce the frequency of high glycemic index (GI) food consumption, increase fruits and vegetable consumption, and also increase physical activities, particularly for adolescent with DM parents. Keywords: Diabetes Mellitus, genetic factor, consumption patterns, nutritional status

Abstract

EnglishRapid rice production growth leading to the achievement of rice self sufficiency in 1984 came from productivity and harvested area which both had been growing rapidly as the results of technological break through (the Green Revolution), infrastructure development, rice field extensification and comprehensive incentive as well as facilitating policies. It was a phenomenal achievement. The rice self sufficiency was proven not sustainable, however. This review shows that since mid 1980's rice production growth has been slowing down and increasingly unstable value to innovation stagnation, over intensification syndrome, over extensification and land conversion, declining incentives and institutional fatigue. Indonesia has become rice net importer since early 1990's and even the largest world rice importer since late 1990's that undermines national food security. Revitalization of trend rice sector has become an imperative strategic national policy agenda. The paper also discusses some policy options for revitalizing the rice sector.
