Abstract

Toxoplasmosis is an important public health problem because of its worldwide distribution, economicand social impact due to high sequele that may cause such as mental retardation and blindness in children.The aims of this study were to asses serological prevalence of toxoplasmosis in donors and women in Baliand get an overview of association between risk factors and toxoplasmosis infection, i.e.: comprising catownership, food pattern, occupation related to contact with raw meat and activities related to contact withsoil. Serum samples were collected from donors consecutively, while simple cluster design was used forsampling woman. Data on demographics and risk factors for toxoplasmosis were obtained usingquestionnaire. Serological prevalence of toxoplasmosis in donors was 35,9%, while in women was 63.9%.Serological prevalence of toxoplasmosis  in donors at District Badung was 29,2%, Tabanan 36.8%, Gianyar25.0%, Denpasar 41.1%, Klungkung 25.0%, and Bangli 8.3%. Serological prevalence of toxoplasmosis  inwomen at District Badung was 33.3%, Tabanan 66.5%, Gianyar 82.5%, Denpasar 71.1%, Klungkung 81.5%and Bangli 16.7%. Risk factor that play a role in toxoplasmosis infection were food pattern and occupationrelated to contact with soil. Abstract

Sag1 and bag1 is a gene specific-stage for Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoite and bradyzoite. The purposeof this study was analyze the sequences of sag1 and bag1 tachyzoite genes of local of Toxoplasma gondiiisolate as deoxyribonucleic acid probe candidate. Tachyzoite of local of Toxoplasma gondii isolate used onthis study. Gene sag1 and bag1 gene of Toxoplasma gondii were amplified by PCR, and then sequenced. Theresults showed sag1 fragment gene contained 612 bp and bag 1 contained 470 bp in length. BLAST analysisof sag1 and bag1 gene fragments as probe candidate showed that high specific for Toxoplasma gondii andno significant cross-reaction fragment with host and other parasites. The sequences 136 bp and 98 bpfragments as DNA probe candidate of Toxoplasma gondii sag1 and bag1 respectively.

Abstract

This research was carried out to examine the functional properties of beef lung protein concentrates. The extraction was performed as a function of pH and time. The pI method was applied in the precipitation of proteins from beef lung. Beef lung protein concentrates contained 85.13% protein. The functional properties of the protein concentrates were compared to those of some commercial ingredients as whey protein concentrates, and casein. Protein from beef lung exhibited better foaming property than casein and better emulsifying property than whey protein. The use of beef lung proteins appears to be an interesting opportunity to obtain added value slaughterhouse by-products.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out DNA band pattern as a result of amplification using DNA primer from meat tenderness gene of Bali cattle. Sample used in this study was DNA isolated from blood Bali cattle. Blood samples was collected in heparin tubes from jugular vein. Leucocyte cells were isolated using RBCs (Red Blood Cells) lysis buffer. To get DNA fragmen, marbling and meat tenderness gene were amplified by using DNA primer for for meat tenderness (forward: 5??CTACCGGGACGTCAACCT-3?; reverse: 5?-GGTTGTCGGGGTAGCTCA-3?). Abstract

Consumer awareness in meat and meat products is generally recognized as a good source of food, with high biological value protein, B group vitamins, minerals and minor elements like several other bioactive compounds that are beneficial to the human body. But in many cases, a processing error is affecting the bioactive compounds of functional foods and consumer impression are relatively negative to some levels of substances in meat such as fat, cholesterol, saturated fatty acids, salt and other substances, which however also involves a diseases of western society such as cardiovascular diseases, respiratory, carcinogenesis, obesity, impaired immune system and accelerate the aging process. Hence there is a need for adequate information related to favorable nutritional value of meat that has not been widely disclosed. Bioactive components in the meat can be anserin, karnosin and bioactive peptides. The generation of bioactive components in the meat in the form of bioactive peptides can be done in three ways: (1) aging or storage of meat, (2) meat fermentation, and (3) the enzyme treatment. Functional properties of bioactive components in meat varies greatly as an antioxidant, antihypertensive, antimicrobial, anticancer and immunomodulatory.

Abstract

A study was conducted Toxoplasma gondii isolate from the brain and the heart of freerangechickens in Bali. The aim of this study to determine the seroprevalence andto isolate Toxoplasma gondii from free-range chicken heart and brain. To achieve of thisstudy observed 311 free-range chicken serum samples with ELISA method and examined225 free-range chicken brain and heart used digestion method. All of the samples takenfrom 9 districts in Bali. The results showed that the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondiiinfreerange chicken has 91.64%. Isolation of Toxoplasma godii from the heart and the brainfreerange chicken found the cyst on inoculate heart and brain, but by bioassay in mice for4 weeks observation failed to find tachyzoite form in peritonial exudat

Abstract

Red ginger is herb that commonly used as part of traditional medicine due to its essential oil content. Some essential oil have proven as rumen fermentation modifier. Addition of red ginger in ruminant diet was studied using in vitro gas production technique to evaluate its effect on nutrient digestibility. Red ginger meal was added to meet essential oil level in fermentation medium of 0 mg/l as control, 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg/l. The diet consisted of Penisetum hybride, rice bran, wheat pollard in ratio 60:20:20 DM basis. Feed fermentation was incubated for 24 h at 39°C. At the end of incubation data of gas production volume was taken, and residual feed were collected for further nutrient analysis to calculate the digestibility of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP) and crude fiber (CF). Variance analysis was used to analysis collected data, followed by DMRT analysis.  Addition of red ginger increase total volume of gas production at level 50 mg/L and above. DM and OM digestibility did not affected by red ginger addition whereas CP digestibility were significantly decreased start at level 50 mg/l. In contrast, CF digestibility of treatment level of 50 mg/l significantly higher than control. In conclusion, addition of red ginger correspond to level essential oil of 50 to 100 mg/l improve ruminal nutrient fermentation.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to identify avian influenza (AI) virus using serological and molecular methods on poultry which suspected as AI infected in Aceh province. This study used 37 samples of tracheal and cloacal swabs and organs from various species of poultry that were collected from several districts/cities in Aceh. Samples were collected and put into transport media and stored at 4° C before sending to the laboratory. Samples were inoculated in specific pathogen-free of embryonated chicken egg with the age of 9-11 days for further serological and molecular examination. From 37 samples which infected to embryonated chicken egg then followed by hemagglutinin agglutination test/hemagglutinin inhibition revealed that 7 samples were positively infected with AI virus. The amplification result of specific matrix gene primer was followed by electrophoresis on 2% agarose gel which were obtained in the form of a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) band at 276 bp for matrix gene and 1.725 bp for H5 gene for all isolates test. In conclusion, the virus which caused the death of various types of poultry in Aceh province is avian influenza A virus subtype H5.Key words: avian influenza virus, H5N1, serologic, matrix, heamaglutinin
