Abstract

This article explains how the American women got theiremancipation from the beginning of 18th century up to mid of 19thcentury. The American women had struggle for their freedom, rights,emancipation, actualization, and discrimination they had from men, evenfrom government. The names such as Betty Friedan, Elizabeth CadyStanton, Elizabeth and Emily Blackwell, were some of the names thatthey had struggle for the American women emancipation. NAWSA, NOW,and ERA, were the result of their fight, and their progress can be seenfrom time to time.Key words: struggle, progress, NAWSA, NOW, and ERA.

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this research is to investigate the level of the eleventh grade students? ability of MAN 1 Pekanbaru in writing hortatory exposition text. The research design is a descriptive quantitative research. There were 32 students chosen as the samples of this research and it was from XI Science 4 class. The instrument of this research was a writing test analyzed by using scoring system adapted from Anderson in Huges (1989) and the students? scores were matched with ?The Student Mastery Level? adapted from Harris (1974). The data show that there were no students who reached excellent level and 1 student (3.13%) was in very good level. Then, there were 13 students (40.63%) who were in good level and 10 students (31.25%) who were in fair level. Moreover, 7 students (21.88%) were in poor level and 1 student (3.13%) was in very poor level. From the collected data, it could be concluded that this eleventh grade students? ability level of MAN 1 Pekanbaru in writing hortatory exposition text was categorized into fair level. Besides, from the five writing indicators assessed, it was found that the students did the best in vocabulary and style with 3.51 as the average score and the students found it difficult in organization indicator (2.98).Key Words: student, ability, writing, hortatory exposition

Abstract

Abstract: This study was aimed to finding out the effect of PLEASE strategy on the ability of the first year students of SMP N 5 Pekanbaru in paragraph writing. This study was a pre experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. A single group was chosen to be the sample of this study by cluster random sampling to get six treatments. There were 36 students joined this study as experimental group. A writing test was used both in pre and post-test. In order to know the difference between pre and post-test and to analyze the hypotheses, t-test formula by Hatch and Farhady (1982) was used. After analyzing the data, it was found out that t-test score was 19.50 while t-table was 2.03 with the level of significant 5% and 2.72 with the level of significance 1%. Since t-test was higher than t-table, it can be concluded that alternative hypothesis was accepted and there was a significant effect of PLEASE strategy on the ability of the first year students of SMP N 5 Pekanbaru in paragraph writing.Keywords: PLEASE strategy, writing ability, junior high school students

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to acquired data of students’ perception of Korean Wave in their general knowledge of English listening, reading, and vocabulary as perceived by them. this research was conducted with survey and analysed descriptively. The broad area of survey research encompasses any measurement procedures that involve asking questions of respondents. This method was used to get a clear picture, and to describe students' perception about the Korean Wave in improving students’ general knowledge of English. The practical part of this study is conducted on junior and senior high school students who in Pekanbaru from which The sample includes fans who are keeping up with K-pop and K-drama for more than one year in order to detect traits that are more influential. Moreover, 100 participants responded to the questionnaire used as a research instrument for achieving the goal of this study. The result in general that students in Pekanbaru have a positive perception of Korean Wave in improving their English. It is also found that Korean Wave has motivated them to learn English by themselves. Based on the research findings, it is showed that Korean Wave give positive perceptive on students in their general knowledge of English and can be used by teachers to increase students’ English.Key Words : Perception, Korean Wave, English General Knowledge

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research was conducted to find out the ability of the fourth semester students of English Study Program FKIP UR in writing a paragrafh. The sample was 60 of the fourth semester students of English study program FKIP UR which was decided by using Simple Random Sampling technique. The data were collected by giving a written test to the students. The students are expected to write a paragraph by choosing one of the given topics. The students’ score were graded by three raters and were analyzed by using Harris’ scoring system which concerned with five aspects of writing; content, form, grammar, style, and mechanics. The findings showed that there were 53 students (88%) in good level and 7 students (12%) in average level, and no student in excellent, poor and very poor level. It was also found that the students’ ability in organization aspect was the highest among the other aspects, with the average score of 69,26, while grammar aspect was the lowest one, with the average score of 63,52. Based on the result obtained, it can be inferred that the fourth semester students of English Study Program FKIP UR were able to write a paragraph and their level of ability was in good level with the average score of 67,48.This study recommended to the students to keep improving their ability and to the further study in the writing skill can focus more on how to improve students’ grammar in writing.Key words: Study, Ability, Writing, Paragraph

Abstract

Abstract: The research is a descriptive research that was conducted based on the problem occurred at the first years students of SMK Taruna Pekanbaru; namely the students were lack in making texts using simple present tense that influence them got poor score in test. Therefore, this research was aimed to find out the dominant errors made by the first year students of SMK Taruna Pekanbaru in using simple present tense in writing descriptive text, The participants were 31 students from first years of SMK Taruna Pekanbaru. This research was conducted for about four months (January – April, 2015) and wad taken on March and April , 2015 at SMK Taruna Pekanbaru, Rajawali Sakti street No.37, Panam. In collecting the data, writer explained the subjects about the use of the simple present tense, and then writer explained about the rules in writing a descriptive text. Next, writer held a field research by preparing questions sheet and answer sheets. Each of the question sheets consisted of an outline that will guide them in writing a descriptive text and the answer sheets were for the students’ writing. The writer looked after the test to avoid the same writing among the students. Then writer analyzed the students’ works by making a list of the students’ errors in using the simple present tense in descriptive text. Based on thoseerrors, writer furthermore began to conduct an error analysis.Keyword: descritive texts, simple presents tense.

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research aimed to find out the significant effect of Anticipation Guide Strategy to the eleventh grade studens’ reading comprehension of SMAN 3 Pekanbaru. More than 50% students of SMAN 3 Pekanbaru often face some problems in comprehending the text caused by some factors such as: lack of background knowledge, lack of vocabulary, the technique in teaching reading comprehension, and students’ background knowledge which has not been activated. To overcome the problems, the writer used Anticipation Guide Strategy in teaching and learning process. The population was the eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Pekanbaru, while the sample class was XI IPS 2. The writer used cluster sampling technique to decide the sample and the instrument of this research was test in the form of multiple choice. The test included five aspects of reading comprehension which are; main idea, inference, reference, factual information, and vocabulary, and three aspects of narrative text which are; generic structure, purpose, and language features. The students’ reading comprehension scores were analyzed using t-test formula. The writer used the level of significance at 0.05 (5%). After being calculated, the value of t-observed was 6.549, whereas the value of t-table on the df (degree of freedom) 33 was 2.021. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis that there is a significant effect of Anticipation Guide Strategy on students’ reading comprehension of SMAN 3 Pekanbaru was accepted and its null hypothesis was rejected. In conclusion, using Anticipation Guide Strategy has a significant effect on students’ reading comprehension of SMAN 3 Pekanbaru.Keywords: Anticipation Guide Strategy, Reading Comprehension2

Abstract

Abstract: This quasi-experimental research aimed to find out whether there is significant effect of webbing technique on the first year students’ ability in writing descriptive paragraph at SMP N 23 Pekanbaru. The researcher used cluster sampling technique to determine the sample. The samples were 36 students as experimental group and 36 students as control group. Writing test is used to get the data by giving pretest and posttest. In analyzing the data, the researcher used t-test formula. The analysis of the data showed that there was significant effect of webbing technique on the students’ ability in writing descriptive paragraph. The mean score of the students before the treatment was 55.83 in experimental group and 56.58 in control group. The mean score of the students after the treatment was 71.09 in experimental group, while in control group was 66.70. Moreover, from the statistical analysis, it was found out the T-observed (1.83) was higher than T-table at the level of significance 0.05 (1.667). Based on this finding, it is suggested that webbing technique can be used by the teacher as an alternative method in the teaching writing, particularly in descriptive text.Keywords: Webbing Technique, Writing Ability, Descriptive Paragraph

Abstract

Abstract : The objective of this research was to find out whether or not there is a significant effect of jigsaw technique on the reading ability of the first year students of MTsN 3 Bengkalis in descriptive texts.This is a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. In conducting this research, a single group conducting of 25 students was selected through cluster random sampling as the sample of the research. This research used reading test consisted of 40 items.Research findings should that, the mean score of pre-test was 58.20 and the mean score of post-test was 68.80. The result also showed that the value of t-test (8.228) is higher than t-table (2.064) at the significance level 5%. It means that Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Hence, there is a significant effect of jigsaw technique on the reading ability of the first year students of MTsN 3 Bengkalis in descriptive text.Key Words: Effect, Jigsaw Technique, Reading Ability, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Abstract : This descriptive research is aimed to find out the ability of the second year students of SMPN 1 Pangkalan Kuras in reading descriptive texts. The research data were collected in July 2018. The sample of this research is class VIII H which consists of 33 students. The data were collected by administering a test to the students in the form of multiple choice types. The test contains 25 items. Based on the data analysis, it was found out that the highest score obtained by the students was in comprehending main ideas with the mean score of 79,39 which is categorized into good level. The lowest score was in comprehending factual information with the mean score of 72,72 which is categorized into good level. As a conclusion the ability of the second year students in reading descriptive texts was in good level with the mean score of 75,51.Keywords: The Ability, Reading Ability, Descriptive Texts
