#### Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the flow of thought of the pre-service mathematics teachers through the answers of a function limit evaluation by formal definition. This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive method. The research subjects were the students of mathematics education department of Universitas Serang Raya, Indonesia. After analyzing the students? written answers, we interviewed the subjects to get further explanation on their strategies and common mistakes. This study found that based on the students? results in the function limit evaluation by formal definition, there were common strategies, i.e. (1) preparing the proof and (2) proving. The stage of preparing the proof consisted of (1) determining delta value by the final statement of formal definition, (2) substituting the given f(x) and L process, (3) simplifying value in the absolute sign, (4) solving the inequality, and (5) finding the delta value. The stage of proving consisted of (1) stating positive epsilon, (2) defining delta, (3) stating positive delta, (4) substituting the constants and delta values in the initial statement of formal definition, and (5) solving the inequality to create the final inequality statement of the formal definition.

#### Abstract

This study aims to assess the difference in learning outcomes of students who receive realistic mathematics learning approach with those who obtain the conventional one. The study is conducted using pre-test post-test control group design with the entire population of eighth grade students of SMP N 2 Lhokseumawe as sample. In this study, purposive sampling technique is used for sampling. Data collection is conducted by giving test and non- test. The test includes cognitive testing on circle after the treatment is given , and the non ? testis given using questionnaire to measure students? attitude and response towards the realistic mathematics learning. Furthermore, the statistical test used in this study is the t-test. The data also illustrates that it follows the normal curve and it is homogenous. In order to test the hypothesis using the t-test, df (degree of freedom)= n1 + n2 - 2 = 30 + 31-2 = 59. As a result, it is obtained that t t table is 3.502 1.671 .  In conclusion, the study finds that 1 ) the students who receive realistic mathematics learning approach perform better on the test compare to those who do not receive the treatment (2 ) Students? response towards realistic mathematic approach is positive

#### Abstract

The ability of mathematical communication  is one of the ability that are required in the curriculum in learning mathematics in school. Weak mathematical communication skills of students is one of the problems in the learning of mathematics in high school that need to be solved . This study aims to examine the ability of mathematical communication between the students who acquire STAD model with conventional learning . This research is an experimental study with a control group study design pre-test post-test . The study population was all students of SMA Negeri 1 Tangan-tangan Class XI , while the sample taken by purposive sampling two classes is class XI IA1 as an experimental and class XI IA2  as the control class. Two kinds of instrument are used to collect the data. They are test and nontest they include the ability of mathematical communication test. While nontest consist of questionnaires of attitude scale and observation sheets. They include the ability of mathematical communication test, while nontes of questionnaires and observation sheets. To see whether the students' mathematical communication skills between gain learning STAD model is better than conventional learning group that used the t-test at the 0.05 significance level after testing prerequisites are fulfilled. Baser on the data and results of statistical tests were analyzed with Microsoft Excel 2007 to interpret students' mathematical communication skills and attitudes of students towards learning model STAD. Based on this research, it is known that: 1) The ability of mathematical communication of studend who acquire cooperative learning STAD model better than students who received conventional teaching; 2) There are differences in mathematical communication skills improvement among subgroups of low, medium and high on student learning using the model STAD so that the learning of mathematics with this model improve mathematical communication skills are not evenly for each subgroup of students. 3) Based on the analysis of attitude scale questionnaire , the students' positive attitudes towards learning mathematics with STAD model. 4) In general, the learning of mathematics by using STAD model makes the students more active in the learning time, students have much opportunity to explore his ability and help each other. 5) Barriers in implementing STAD models namely: the willingness of insufficient time, students' skills in reading comprehension and item is still low .

#### Abstract

Several studies related to mathematical proof have been done by many researchers on high-level materials, but not yet examined on the material of transformation geometry. The aim of this research is identification learning obstacles pre-service teachers on transformation geometry. This study is qualitative research; data were collected from interview sheets and test. There were four problems given to 9 pre-service mathematics teachers. The results of this research were as follows: learning obstacles related to the difficulty in applying the concept; related to visualize the geometry object; related to obstacles in determining principle; related to understanding the problem and related obstacles in mathematical proofs such as not understanding and unable to express a definition, not knowing to use the definition to construct the proof, not understanding the use of language and mathematical notation, not knowing how to start the proof.

#### Abstract

The purpose of this study was to confirm the factors that influence the sociomathematics norm. The method used in this research is the ex post facto. The subjects in this study were seventh-grade junior high school students in the city of Yogyakarta, Indonesia (264 students) taken by cluster random sampling. The instrument used was a sociomathematics norm observation sheet consisting of four factors are (1) the experience of mathematics, (2) the explanation of the mathematics, (3) mathematical differences, (4) mathematical communication. Data analysis using structural equation models with the Confirmatory Factors Analysis. The results showed that the modified path analysis obtained goodness of fit mostly in the fit category, so overall the sample covariance matrix is the same as the estimated covariance matrix.

International Journal on Emerging Mathematics Education IJEME, Vol. 1 No. 1, March 2017

#### Abstract

This study aims to describe enhancement and achievement of mathematical critical thinking skills of students who received the 5E Learning Cycle with Metacognitive technique, the 5E Learning Cycle, and conventional learning. This study use experimental method with pretest-posttest control group design. Population are junior high school students in Indramayu city, Indonesia. Sample are three classes of eighth grade students from high level school and three classes from medium level school. The study reveal that in terms of overall, mathematical critical thinking skills enhancement and achievement of students who received the 5E Learning Cycle with Metacognitive technique is better than students who received the 5E Learning Cycle and conventional learning. Mathematical critical thinking skills of students who received the 5E Learning Cycle is better than students who received conventional learning. There is no interaction effect between learning model and school level toward enhancement and achievement of students’ mathematical critical thinking skills.

#### Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the forms of representation constructed by primary school students in solving mathematical problems. Representation is the basis or foundation of how a student could understand and use mathematical ideas. The forms of representation, such as charts, graphs, and symbols, are essentially a long process of learning mathematics, but unfortunately these representations are often thought of and studied in its final form. Actually, representations should be given as support in the process of understanding concepts, the associations of mathematics, mathematical communication, constructing arguments, and apply mathematical concepts in everyday life through modeling. This research showed that the forms of representation constructed by the students are extremely varied. They are constructed in tables, images, patterns, and in the formal forms of mathematics (the formula). This study was also revealed that some students are able to develop forms of representation using logical mathematical processes. Students begin to formulate a representation using known premise, set the table, make conjecture, and subsequently arrange a formal representation. Keywords: mathematic representation, tables, charts, graphs, statements.
