Abstract

Problem-based learning (PBL) has been adopted in medical faculty and sometimes produced students? anxieties. Thisqualitative research will gathered the information of students? condition based on their perspectives in strengths anddifficulties of adapting PBL in Medical Faculty of Riau University. Data were collected by questionnaires and reflectiveassay. These data will be analyzed and grouped based on the themes and meaning by researcher. Result showed that thestrengths of PBL based on students perspectives were increasing in skill of teamwork, speaking, active learning,communicating, and critical thinking. In the other hand, students? perspectives of PB L difficulties after first tutorialwere internal types such as lack of knowledge in PBL and in topic of discussion, but after first session, the difficultieswere external types such as; heavy workload, limited sources of literatures.

Abstract

Celery (Apium graveolens L.) has been known as traditional medicine. Apigenin is one of active component in Celeryleaf that has fungicidal activity, so celery leaf?s extortion suspected has fungicidal activity to Candida albicans. Apigenincan solved in water. The aim of this research was to know antifungal activity of celery leaf?s extortion againsts Candidaalbicans in vitro.This is a laboratory experimental research by using completely randomized design and disc diffusion method. Celeryleaf?s extortion was divided into 3 concentrations, there were 25%, 50% and 100%. Ketoconazole 2% was used aspositive control and aquadest as negative control. The result of this research was based on analysis of variance, therewas significant difference between minimal 2 treatment (p=0.000) and confirmed with Post Hoc test, there were significantdifference in all treatments. As the conclusion, celery leaf?s extortion had antifungal activity againsts Candida albicansin vitro with the best concentration 50% but smaller than ketoconazole 2%.

Abstract

Malondialdehyde, a product of lipid peroxidation, is often used as an indicator to detect the oxidative stress damaged in the body. Lipidperoxidation is associated with progression of atherosclerosis. It is known that onion (Allium ascalonicum L.) can be used as an antioxidantand hypolipidemic agent, but whether onion can decrease hypercolesterolemia mice MDA plasma induced by yolk is still unknown. Thepurpose of this study was to investigate the effect of onion?s juice on hypercolesterolemia mice MDA plasma level. This was an experimentallaboratory research with post test only design with control. The measured parameters were cholesterol and MDA level on tested groups.Groups with treatment consist of yolks group, and 80% shallot juice, simvastatin and aquadest were separately used as positive and negativecontrol. The result showed that there was significant difference between high fat feed group which added 80% onion?s juice and high fat feedgroup only. Addition of 80% onion?s juice in high fat feed groups decreased MDA plasma level equal to normal feed group. In conclusion, itwas proved that onion?s juice decreased mice MDA plasma level.

Abstract

Problem-based Learning (PBL) is an effective approach to promote student-centered learning. PBL tutorials were thekey step in PBL process. Students? participation in PBL tutorials can be influenced by many factors. The aim of thisstudy was to identify the factors that influence students? participation in PBL tutorials among students in Faculty ofMedicine University of Riau. The research was a cross sectional study using self report questionnaires obtained fromPBL students, conducted in April - October 2009. The students? participation was assessed using Visschers-Pleijersquestionnaires. The result revealed the characteristics of parcipants which are female (79.5%), 19 years old (40.2%),had GPA 2.50 ? 3.00 (56.7%), had past experience in organization (89.0%). Among 44.1% of the participants showedactive participation in tutorial processs. Male students more likely active than female students (P = 0.045). Anotherfactors including age, GPA, past experience in organization, role of tutors, and quality of scenario were not influencedthe participation of subject. Students? participation in PBL tutorials among students in Faculty of Medicine Universityof Riau was influenced by sex.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever is caused by dengue virus and spread by Aedes aegypti as primarily vector. Preventingdengue virus transmission depends on control of the mosquito vectors. Kiffer lime is one of the potential plants as abotanical larvacidal. The aim of this study was to investigate kiffer lime larvacidal ability against Ae.aegypti larvaebased on LC50 and LC90 levels by probit analize. The design of this research was experimental including preliminarytest and final test. 525 samples of Ae.aegypti larvae instar III/IV were used in this study and divided in to six groupsof experiment. The result were from observation of the larvae mortalities within 24 hours. Assassement of larvacidalefficacy demonstrated that kiffer lime leaf were toxic against Ae.aegypti larvae. LC50 value is 4015,880 ppm and LC90value is 6961,822 ppm. Ethanol extract of kiffer lime leaf could be considered as a potentially alternative source forbotanical larvacides.
