Abstract

ABSTRAK Penelitian tentang aktivitas antibakteri gel ekstrak lengkuas terhadap Pseudomonas aeruginosa dan Bacillus subtilis dilakukan untuk mengetahui aktivitas antibakteri gel ekstrak lengkuas terhadap P. aeruginosa dan B. subtilis. Dalam penelitian ini ekstraksi dilakukan dengan metode maserasi dengan pelarut etanol 70%. Uji aktivitas antibakteri menggunakan metode difusi. Sifat fisik yang diuji adalah organoleptis, pH, dan viskositas. Senyawa minyak atsiri eugenol dan flavonoid diidentifikasi menggunakan KLT. Data viskositas dianalisis dengan uji anava dua arah dengan taraf kepercayaan 95% dan dilanjutkan uji BNT. Diameter zona hambat antibakteri dianalisis dengan uji anava satu arah dengan taraf kepercayaan 95% dan dilanjutkan uji BNT. Gel ekstrak lengkuas mempunyai sifat organoleptis dan pH yang stabil selama 28 hari, tapi viskositas gel menurun seiring bertambahnya hari. Gel ekstrak lengkuas memiliki aktivitas antibakteri terhadap P. aeruginosa, tapi tidak memiliki aktivitas antibakteri terhadap B. subtilis. Kata kunci: ekstrak lengkuas, aktivitas antibakteri, minyak atsiri eugenol dan flavonoid. ABSTRACT A research on antibacterial activity of ginger extract gel was done to know antibacterial activity of gel of ginger extract against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis. In this research extraction was done by maseration method with 70% ethanol as solvent. Antibacterial activity test used diffusion method. Gel was tested pHysical properties for organoleptic, pH, and viscosity. Volatile oil and flavonoid compound were identified by TLC method. The viscosity data was analyzed by two way anava test with 95% significance level continued by LSD. The diameter of clear zone was analyzed by one anava with 95% significance level continued by LSD. Ginger extract is stable organolepticcally and pH for 28 days storage, but viscosity of gels decreases by time. The result showes that ginger extract gel has antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa, but does not have antibacterial activity against B. subtilis. Abstract

ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membuktikan bahwa buah mengkudu dalam bentuk ekstrak soxhletasi dapat mempercepat pertumbuhan rambut kelinci jantan. Kandungan buah mengkudu yang diduga mempunyai efek merangsang pertumbuhan rambut adalah alkaloid, saponin dan flavonoid. ekstrak dibuat dengan cara soxhletasi serbuk buah mengkudu menggunakan pelarut etanol 96% kemudian dipekatkan dengan penangas air, selanjutnya digunakan untuk uji pertumbuhan rambut kelinci jantan. Punggung kelinci dicukur persegi dengan sisi 2 cm. Kotak 1 diolesi etanol 96% sebagai kontrol negatif, kotak 2 diolesi ekstrak soxhletasi buah mengkudu konsentrasi 12,5 %, kotak 3 diolesi ekstrak soxhletasi buah mengkudu konsentrasi 25 %, kotak 4 diolesi hair tonic kina sebagai kontrol positif. Pengukuran pertumbuhan rambut dilakukan setiap 3 hari sekali selama 18 hari. Data pertumbuhan rambut rata-rata perhari yang diperoleh kemudian dianalisis dengan anava yang dilanjutkan dengan uji tukey dengan taraf kepercayaan 95 %. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak soxhletasi buah mengkudu dapat mempercepat pertumbuhan rambut kelinci jantan. Kata kunci : Buah mengkudu, ekstrak soxhletasi, pertumbuhan rambut, kelinci jantan ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to prove whether ethanolic extract of Morinda can increase rabbit hair growth. The secondary metabolites of Morinda which stimulate rabbit hair growth are probably alkaloid, saponin and flavonoid. The extract was made by soxhletation of Morinda used ethanol 96 % as solvent, then it was thickened by water bath. The rabbit back was shaved into 2 cm square box. The first area treated ethanol 96 % as negative control, the second area treated with 12,5 % ethanol extract of Morinda, the third area treated with 25 % ethanol extract of Morinda, the fourth area treated with kina hair tonic as positive control. The measurement of hair growth was done every 3 days for 18 days. The daily average of hair growth was analyzed with anova and continued with Tukey test at 95 % significancy level. The result showed that ethanol extract of Morinda can increase growth of rabbit’s hair. Key words: Morinda, soxhletation extract, hair growth, rabbit.

Abstract

Minyak atsiri daun sirih (Piper betle Linn.) memberikan aktifitas antimikroba terhadap Candida albicans (Wirna, 2006). Sifat minyak atsiri adalah kurang stabil terhadap suhu tinggi, cahaya, dan oksigen. Untuk menjaga kestabilan dan memudahkan penanganan minyak atsiri dalam pembuatan sediaan, dapat dilakukan pembuatan kompleks inklusi minyak atsri dengan b-siklodekstrin (Szejtli, 1989). Hal ini mendorong penulis untuk meneliti tentang pengaruh pembentukan kompleks inklusi minyak atsiri daun sirih dalam b-siklodekstrin terhadap aktivitas antijamur candida albicans yang diformulasikan dalam sediaan salep polietilen glikol. Dalam penelitian ini, pertama kali dilakukan isolasi minyak atsiri daun sirih secara destilasi. Kemudian dilakukan pembuatan kompleks inklusi minyak atsiri daun sirih - β-siklodekstrin dengan metode kopresipitasi dengan perbandingan minyak atsiri daun sirih : β-siklodekstrin 1:1 (b/b). Kompleks inklusi yang terbentuk diidentifikasi dengan kromatografi lapis tipis dan difraksi sinar X serbuk. Kromatografi lapis tipis menggunakan silika gel sebagai fase diam dan fase gerak toluen-etil asetat (7:3) dan metanol-air (7:3). Nilai Rf minyak atsiri daun sirih dan kompleks inklusi dibandingkan. Pola difraksi sinar X serbuk β-siklodekstrin, campuran fisik, dan kompleks inklusi juga dibandingkan. Tahap selanjutnya adalah pembuatan salep minyak atsiri daun sirih dan salep kompleks inklusi minyak atsiri daun sirih - β-siklodekstrin dengan menggunakan basis polietilen glikol. Sifat fisik dan aktivitas antifungi kedua formula dibandingkan. Hasil kromatografi lapis tipis menunjukkan minyak atsiri daun sirih dengan fase gerak metanol-air (7:3) mempunyai Rf 0,69 dan 0,81 untuk kompleks inklusi. Pada  fase gerak toluen-etil asetat (7:3), nilai Rf minyak atsiri daun sirih 0,63; 0,73; 0,85; sedangkan kompleks inklusi 0,66; 0,80, dan 0,91. Analisis difraksi sinar X serbuk menunjukkan pola yang berbeda antara  β-siklodekstrin, campuran fisik dan kompleks inklusi. Perbedaan Rf pada kromatografi lapis tipis dan perbedaan pola difraksi sinar X  ini menunjukkan bahwa minyak atsiri daun sirih telah terkompleks dengan β-siklodekstrin. Hasil uji sifat fisik salep minyak atsiri daun sirih dan salep kompleks inklusi minyak atsiri daun sirih - β-siklodekstrin menunjukkan bahwa homogenitas kedua formula cukup baik. Salep kompleks inklusi minyak atsiri daun sirih - β-siklodekstrin mempunyai daya sebar, daya lengket dan daya antijamur  yang lebih baik dibandingkan dengan salep minyak atsiri daun sirih. Potensi daya antijamur salep kompoleks inklusi minyak atsiri daun sirih - β-siklodekstrin tidak berbeda nyata dengan salep mikonazol sebagai kontrol positif.

Abstract

Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) is a medicinal plant commonly used in Thai Traditional Medicine (TTM), both in single use and formula. It has been known for its antioxidant activity and applied for management of many diseases. In this article, we reported some aspects of quality control of crude drugs and capsules of turmeric according to the standards set in Thai Herbal Pharmacopeia (THP). The results of our evaluations demonstrated that turmeric crude drugs met the criteria set in THP for microscopical identification, foreign matter (1.31%), loss on drying (6.89±0.174%), ethanol-soluble extractive (13.56%), water-soluble extractive (15.17%), and the profile of Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) chromatogram. However, its volatile oil content (5.95%) was below the minimum value set in THP. The turmeric capsules met the criteria set in THP for loss on drying (8.64±0.093%), ethanol-soluble extractive (18.07%), water-soluble extractive (14.95%), and profile of TLC chromatogram.

Abstract

In this review, a considerable amount of works that have been published on the endophytic bacteria isolated from host plants collected in Indonesia is reported. Abstract

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf, Poaceae) has been known for demonstrating anti-microbial activity against food spoilage bacteria. These antimicrobial properties can be further utilized for the development of natural food preservatives. In this study, the compounds present in water extract and essential oil of lemongrass were analyzed and their potential as tofu preservatives was evaluated. The water extract was prepared by the infusion method, while the essential oil was made by steam and water distillation. The phyto-chemicals composition of the water extract and essential oil was analyzed by qualitative colorimetric phyto-chemical screening and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS) technique, respectively. Their preservative activity on tofu was evaluated by observing their ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria on the tofu and the physical changes of tofu during 10 days of preservation at room temperature. The results showed that lemongrass water extract contained terpenoids, tannins, and saponins. The GC-MS analysis identified 13 compounds in the essential oil. Neral, geranial, ?-myrcene, juniper camphor, and viridiflorol were found as the major compounds. At concentration of 20%, lemongrass water extract demonstrated inhibition of bacterial growth during 10 day storage of tofu and improved the shelf life by 4 days longer from those of the negative control. In contrast, lemongrass essential oil did not show inhibitory activity in bacterial growth in tofu but it was capable of maintaining the color, odor, and texture of tofu as well as delaying the slime formation up to 4 days.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Lengkuas (Alpinia galanga L.) mengandung minyak atsiri yang berkhasiat sebagai antijamur. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui aktivitas antijamur krim minyak atsiri terhadap Candida albicans. Minyak atsiri lengkuas diperoleh dengan cara destilasi uap air. Pada penelitian ini ada lima kelompok yang diujikan, yaitu formula I (krim ketokonazol) sebagai kontrol positif, formula II (krim tanpa penambahan minyak atsiri), formula III (krim dengan penambahan minyak atsiri 2 g), formula IV (krim dengan penambahan minyak atsiri 2,75 g), formula V (krim dengan penambahan minyak atsiri 3,50 g). Krim diuji fisik (uji organoleptis, homogenitas, daya menyebar, daya lengket) dan aktivitas antijamur terhadap Candida albicans. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis dengan Anava satu arah dilanjutkan dengan menggunakan uji BNT (Beda Nyata Terkecil). Hasil penelitian menujukkan bahwa semakin banyak penambahan minyak atsiri menyebabkan kenaikan daya sebar. Aktivitas antijamur krim minyak atsiri lengkuas terhadap Candida albicans meningkat dengan naiknya konsentrasi penambahan minyak atsiri. Kata Kunci : Minyak atsiri lengkuas, krim, Candida albicans ABSTRACT Alpinia galanga L. essential oil is active as antifungal agent. This reseach was aimed to find out Antifungal Activity of Alpinia Galanga Essential Oil Cream Against Candida albicans. Alpinia galanga essential oil was obtained by steam and water destillation method. There are five groups used in this research, there were Formula I (ketokonazol cream) as positive contol, Formula II (cream without addition of essential oil), Formula III ( cream with addition of essential oil 2 g), Formula IV (cream with addition of essential oil 2.75g), Formula V (cream with addition of essential oil 3.50 g). The cream were tested for physical properties (organoleptic, homogeneity, adhesiveness, spreading) and antifungal activity on Candida albicans. Data was analyzed by one way anava and continued by LSD (Least Significant Different) test of post hoc test. Research result indicated that a higher essential oil concentration will increase cream spreading. Antifungal activity of alpinia galanga essential oil cream increase along with increasing of essential oil concentration. Keyword : Alpinia galanga essential oil, cream, Candida albicans.

Abstract

The enhancement of WHR value which is one of abdominal obesity predictor is usually correlated with the rise of chronic disease risks because its relations with the metabolic syndrome. Dietary intake and energy expenditure factors may have the important role of balance energy that can increase WHR value. The aim of this study is to analyze correlation of energy expenditure, energy and fiber intake with waist hip ratio (WHR) of officers. This cross-sectional study was taken place at PT. Pertamina (Persero) Semarang with consecutive counted 55 sample. Energy and fiber intake was estimated by dietary food record 2 x 24 hour dan Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Quesionaire. While energy expenditure was counted by using form diary activity. Statistic correlation was calculated by Statistic Package for the Social Science (SPSS) for window. About 70,9% of total subject has abdominal obesity. The prevalence of abdominal obesity is higher in women (81,5%) than men (60,7%). The mean of energy intake is 2402.2 ± 319.68 Kcal. Obese subject has 7,2% higher energy intake than normal subject. About 40% subject has light energy expenditure category and 45,5% subject is belong to moderate energy expenditure category. About 96,4% subject has fiber intake less than 25 gram per day. The result of this study shows that energy intake has association with WHR(r = 0.455 ; p = 0.000). Fiber intake is inversely associated with WHR(r = -0.382 ; p = 0.004). Energy expenditure also has negative association with WHR(r = -0.268 ; p = 0.048). There are significantly correlation of energy expenditure, energy and fiber intake with WHR.

Abstract

We have successfully isolated and identified endophytic fungi from medicinal plant Mesua ferrea L. grown at Banyumas were for the first time. One of those fungi was MFD-01. In this study, we report the isolation, identification, antibacterial activity, and phytochemical screening of Aspergillus sp. MFD-01. The endophytic fungus was isolated from the leaves of M. ferrea by subsequent inoculation on potato dextrose agar (PDA). The identification was based on its morphology and ITS-DNA sequence. The antibacterial activity was determined by dilution method. The identification of compounds in ethyl acetate extract of it was conducted according to the standart phytochemical screening method. MFD-01 was identified as Aspergillus sp. MFD-01. The ethyl acetate extract of Aspergillus sp. MFD-01 inhibited the growth of both Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. At concentration of 1000 ppm, its diameter of inhibitory zone against those bacteria was 10.53 and 11.84, respectively. The extract contained flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids, and tannins, which might responsible for its antibacterial activity against both tested bacteria.

Abstract

The n-hexane extracts of the aerial parts of Ocimum x citriodorum and the leaves of Cymbopogon citratus, Syzygium aromaticum and Syzygium polyanthum were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity against some food borne microorganisms. Their volatile compounds were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). All extracts inhibited the growth of Bacillus subtilis. The extract of S. polyanthum showed the strongest inhibitory activity against Salmonella typhimurium. The growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Vibrio cholera were not inhibited by all extracts. The major volatile constituent of O. x citriodorum, C. citratus, S. aromaticum and S. polyanthum crude extracts were citral, germacrene D-14-ol, p-eugenol and squalene, respectively.
