The aims of the research were to observe (1) utilization of cocoa pod husk meal to fish feed especially for carbohydrate source (2) effect of substitution rice bran by cocoa pod husk meal on growth and product of giant goramy (3) find the substitution doses of rice bran by cocoa pod husk meal on feed which could give better influence on giant goramy growth. The research was done for 8 months in Fisheries Research Station Laboratory, Agriculture Faculty Gadjah Mada University. Research was conduct by cultured of giant goramy on fibre tank, for 60 days. There were 5 treatmens substitution dose (20, 40, 60, and 80%) and control (comercial feed) with 3 replications. During cultured the tank were irrigated and the fish were fed 3% of body weight 3 times a day. The result showed that cocoa pod husk meal can substitute rice bran on giant goramy feed. Substitution rice bran by cocoa pod husk meal on fed not significantly affect on the growth, product and survival rate of giant goramy, but significant affected on buoyancy of feed. Giant goramy were feeding by comercial feed had growth and product better than feeding by artificial feed.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh limbah budidaya lele sebagai media budidaya cacing sutera dan mendapatkan ketebalan media yang menghasilkan biomassa cacing sutera tertinggi. Penelitian dilakukan menggunakan sistem wadah bertingkat dengan aliran air secara resirkulasi. Wadah budidaya yang digunakan berukuran 40x30x20 cm3. Penelitian dilakukan secara eksperimen dengan rancangan penelitian berupa Rancangan Acak Kelompok Lengkap dengan empat perlakuan dan masing-masing tiga ulangan, yaitu P1 (ketebalan media 2 cm); P2 (ketebalan media 4 cm); P3 (ketebalan media 8 cm); P4 (ketebalan media 12 cm) dengan kedalaman air 6 cm. Padat tebar Tubifex sp. sebesar 150 g/m3 dengan rerata berat 0,0062±0,00032 g. Data dianalisis menggunakan sidik ragam dan uji lanjut Duncan’s Multiple Range Test. Perbedaan ketebalan media budidaya berpengaruh nyata (P<0,05) terhadap produksi biomassa cacing sutera. Biomassa cacing sutera tertinggi sebesar 1745,14±143,77g/m3 atau meningkat sebesar 12,65 kali lipat dan populasi sebesar 233848,46±19265,61 ind./m3 pada ketebalan media 8 cm. Hubungan perlakuan dengan produksi biomassa cacing sutera diperoleh hubungan kuadratik mengikuti persamaan y= -31,428x2 + 586,47x – 743,54. Ketebalan media yang optimal untuk menghasilkan produksi biomassa maksimal yaitu 9,1 cm.

The aims of this research were to know the prevalency, intensity and distribution of Anisakis sp. which infected hairtail (Trichiurus sp.) in the southern coast of Purworejo Regency. Samples were collected from fish landing-places in Jatimalang and Keburuhan, Purworejo Regency. Totally 276 fish were collected as samples during 4 months (September-December 2005). Every sampel was measured in total length and body weight. The examination of Anisakis sp. were conducted on body surface, body cavity, gut, liver, gonad, and muscle. Results of the research indicated that the Anisakis sp. infected various size of hairtail, with prevalency 62,68% and mean intensity of infection 3,30 individual/fish. Infected organs were body cavities (peritoneum), guts, gonads, livers, muscles, gills and pneumatocysts.

The aims of this research were to determine the population parameters of hairtails (Trichiurus sp.) and the potential use of fish parasite (Anisakis sp.) for its stock assessment. Fishery survey was conducted at southern coast of Cilacap, Central Java on September to October 2004. Total length and weight of 527 fish samples were measured in five periods during the field survey and 30 samples were collected randomly for further observation to analyze the Anasakis sp., sex ratio, and gonad maturity. The average length of catched fish was ranged between 62  to 70 cm and weight was 200  to 250 g. The  length-weight (L-W) relationship indicated positive allometric growth (b=3.6076). Sex ratio was balance at 1:1 with gonad maturity range between I to IV for female and I to III for male. Anisakis sp. were found as endoparasite and potentially used as biological tags for fish stock assessment such as migration pattern and feeding habit.

Seaweeds are potential foodstuff and source of bioactive substances that are very useful in the food and pharmaceutical industries. The objective of this study was to evaluate toxicity of aqueous extracts of seaweeds by Brine shrimp lethality test (BLT) and cytotoxicity test. The seaweeds used in this study were Enteromorpha sp. and Laurencia sp. collected from the Gunungkidul coastal line. The cytotoxicity test was performed against a normal cells line of Vero cells and a cancer cells line of HeLa cells. The cells lines were cultured in M119 medium with addition of 10% FBS and incubated at 37°C in CO2 incubator until confluent. Cells were harvested and cultured in 96 microplate with an initial density of 2x104 cells / 100 ml / well. The cells lines were treated with seaweed extracts at 24 hours after incubation. After additional 24 h incubation, the cell proliferation was observed by MTT method (3- [4,5 dimethylthiazol-2-yl] -2,5- diphenyltetrazolium bromide.The results showed that the two aqueous extract were not toxic in the BLT test, and did not exhibited any cytotoxicity activity against HeLa and Vero cells lines. Concentration-dependent cell proliferation was also not found. This results indicated that Enteromorpha sp. and Laurencia sp. extracts were not cytotoxic and might be consumed safely. These overall results suggested that the two seaweeds might be developed to be a new foodstuff for humans.
