Abstract

Code-switching is a phenomenon that exists in bilingual societies where people have the opportunity to use two or more languages to communicate. Being able to speak more than one language, bilinguals can code-switch and use their languages as resources to find better ways to convey meaning. Code-switching occurs in English Study Program, Faculty of Lecturer Training, University of Banten Jaya, Serang, Banten. Therefore, the aim for this paper was to investigate when and why the lecturer in the class ?English for a Group Activity? used code-switch when teaching L2 English. It has also looked into what language the learners preferred in different classroom situations. Alecturer were interviewed and 32learners taking the class. The results showed that the lecturer generally tried to code-switch as little as possible but that they did code-switch in some of those situations where the learners preferred either a combination of Bahasa Indonesia and English or only Bahasa Indonesia. Two of these situations were grammar instructions, where a majority of the learners preferred a combination of English and Bahasa Indonesia, and one-to-one situations, where a majority of the learners preferred Bahasa Indonesia.

Abstract

This research is aimed to describe the jargonitis created by PT Danone as the company producing ?Aqua.? Then, the analysis was based on the cohesion and coherences provided on the label of ?Aqua.? The jargonitis was created by the company to attract the market target, in this case the teenagers as the largest consumers in the world. In a business world, there are some efforts conducted by a company for the products released can be effective for some people, inthis case, to attract some people. The effective method to conduct the efforts is by marketing. One of the methods done by a mineral water company is by creating jargonitis. Therefore, some people will remember the jargon with the purpose of the company that ?someone could not focus if the were dehydrated.? The study used content analysisi method. As the results of the research are the meaning of Jargontitis that it can be divided into three parts; 1) Onomatopoeic based Jargon; 2) Blend and Acronym based Jargon; and 3)Pidgin Based Jargon. Therefore, some teenagers will use the jargons in their activities and indirectly they will remember ?Aqua? as the focus maker.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the translation strategy at the word level used in the translation of the song in the animated movie "Let it go" from English into Bahasa Indonesia. The frequency with which each translation strategy is measured. The translation strategy for addressing disparate words at Word level proposed by Baker (1992) is applied as a framework for data analysis. The data for this study is the lyrics of the original song "Let it go" sung by Idina Menzel in the original movie produced by Walt Disney "Frozen" with a translation version of Indonesian. The result shows that the seven strategies proposed by Baker (1992), identified as used in this study. Translation strategiesare translated by disappearances, translated by paraphrasing using unrelated words, and translations by cultural substitution.

Abstract

This study is focused on analysis of the politeness expressed by the main characters and supporting characters in ?Beauty and the Beast? Movie. The objective of this study are to know the politeness expressed by the main characters; Beauty (Belle) and the Beast (Prince) and to know the politeness expressed by the supporting characters in ?Beauty and the Beast? movie. This Study is qualitative research that used content analysis method. Technique of data analysis in this study is using descriptive qualitative. The result of analysis are the sum of expression of politeness in saying thank you are 8 expressions, in saying hello are 7 expression, in answer the saying hello are 2 expressions, in use ?I?m sorry? are 5 expression and of how to sound more polite are 5 expressions. The sum of all expression of politeness that expressed by the characters in ?Beauty  and the Beast? movie are 27 expressions. Based on the discussion of the result of analysis, It can be concluded that expression of politeness is important in communication and it usually use in conversation when people in saying hello or greeting, when people answer the saying hello or greeting from others, when people ask with the sound more polite, and the last when people saying use ?I?m sorry? to refused and ignore something and ask to forgiven by other people. This study can be applied to conduct the learning material in teaching about the  English expression in conversation, especially expression of politeness.

Abstract

SQ3R is a method to get knowledge from reading sources. Thus, the contents of a reading source will become effective as a knowledge, in this case the knowledge instructed by the lecturer in the "English for Specific Purpose" Course. The desired knowledge obtained is the knowledge of "ISO" (International Organization for Stadardization) . After getting the contents of a reading about the "ISO", the lecturer will form a group for a conversation simulation in a company meeting by using the "Role Play" method, where students in the group will act as managers in a company. The limitation of this research is to only focus on the role of the SQ3R method on the "Role Play" method as one of the methods for teaching students' Speaking Skills at STIA Banten, especially students of the "English for Specific Purpose" class. In conducting this research, the author used the Action Research method or take certain actions or treatments to see the success of students to be able to communicate. Then, the data used is observation data with recording techniques and also the value of student learning outcomes. The results achieved in this study are that there is a close relationship between SQ3R conducted by students to find out about "ISO" and then practice it in the classroom using the "Role Play" method. From the results obtained by students, there is also visible progress before using the SQ3R method with students' speaking ability after using the SQ3R method.
