Abstract

The brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens can cause direct damage and transmit rice diseases.  Beauveria bassiana is used to control BPH, however the success of the fungal efficacy on rice fields is affected by external factors, such as temperature. This research aimed to evaluate the conidial viability and density of B. bassiana isolates from Java and Sumatra, exposed to 25 and 34°C and their virulence against BPH nymphs. Twenty six isolates of B. bassiana cultures incubated at 25 and 34°C for 7 days were observed on their conidial density, viability, and  virulence against BPH nymphs. The incubation temperature of 34°C was able to decrease conidial density and viability, and virulence of the isolates.  However, some isolates of B. bassiana originated from soils or insects in Sumatra, especially from South Sumatra still produced high conidial density and viability as well as high virulent against BPH nymphs, such as TS1D3A, TSID3B, TS1D2A and TS1D2B isolates. The TS1D2B isolate incubated at 34°C still caused the highest percentage of BPH mortality (43.33%)  among other isolates. Therefore, the isolates can be used as promosing candidate for  biocontrol for N. lugens on rice planted in tropical ecosystem, such as wetland or lowland rice ecosystems in Indonesia.

Abstract

Studies on soil-dwelling predatory arthropods were carried out in lowland areas of South Sumatra, with objectives to analyze the species diversity and abundance of the predatoryarthropods inhabiting fields applied by synthetic insecticide, bioinsecticide, and without insecticide application. The predatory arthropods were sampled using pitfall traps. Indices of diversity and community similarities were applied to analyze the data. Results indicated that the arthropods inhabiting field without insecticide application had the highest diversity and abundance compared to other treatments. Predatory community similarities between those on the field without insecticide application and applied by bioinsecticide were higher compared to the fields applied by synthetic insecticide.

Abstract

The advantages of ratooning rice are to save water, cost production, labor, preparation time for planting and harvesting, but the ratooning productivity is still low.  This research aimed to study the effect of the bioinsecticide and compost extract on ratooning rice production and insect populations. The ratooning rice was applied by bioinsecticide, compost extract, and combination of bioinsecticide and compost extract with dose 2 L ha-1  per application, respectively. Data of agronomic variables were statistically analyzed using analysis of variance, whereas insect pest population data were analyzed using Chi Square test. The seedling height of ratoon applied by compost extract was the highest among treatments. The number of productive tillers per clumps and rice production on plot applied by compost extract were higher than the insecticide treatment. At the age of 17 day-ratooning rice, application bioinsecticide reduced the population of insect pests, such as Ciccadulina bipunctata, Recilia dorsalis, Nilaparvata lugens, and Nephotettix nigropictus. Thus, application of compost extract tended to improved the growth and production of the ratooning rice, while the bioinsecticide decreased the insect pest population.Keywords: Beauveria bassiana, rice growth, production

Abstract

The objective of study was to investigate the effectiveness of Beauveria bassiana isolate cultured in half-ripe rice media against third-instar larvae of Plutella xylostella. The research used 10 isolates consisted of 4 isolates that were originnally collected from Pagaralam i.e. PD1 (isolated from P. xylostella cadaver), PD2, PD8, PD9B (from Crysodeixis chalcites cadaver), and 6 isolates from other areas as comparison, i.e. CCW3 (from Crysodeixis chalcites cadaver), BBL (from Hypothenemus hampei cadaver), CH (from Conomorpha cramerella cadaver), CPJW (from H. hampei cadavi), WC (from Nilaparvata lugens cadaver), and WSJT (from Leptocorixa acuta cadaver). The parameters that were measured were mortality of larvae, time of death and behaviour of larvae after application. Result of the test showed that B. bassiana isolated from L. acuta (WSJT isolate) caused the highest mortality i.e. 73.34 %, with the highest spore density 5.6x107 spore ml-1 (in half-rice media) and 3.0x107 spore ml-1 (GYA media). The lowest LT50 was 19.27 hours, and was obtained from the application of PD9B. After application of B. bassiana, the behaviour of larvae was slightly change from a healthy one to less in consuming of food and then die.

Abstract

Spiders are the main predators in paddy ecosystem. Application of entomopathogenic fungus, such as Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) is not expected to have any negative effect on spiders in the paddy field. This research was aimed to compare species composition, abundance, and species richness of spiders in ratoon paddy. The research was done on  three hectares of rice fields that were treated with the following treatment, (i) 2 L/ha/application of liquid B. bassiana, (ii) 2 L/ha/application compost extract (without liquid B. bassiana), and  (iii) a combination of liquid B. bassiana and compost extract with each using the same 2L/ha/application dose. The result of this research showed that B. bassiana bioinsecticide application did not affect the abundance and species richness of spiders in ratoon paddy. The treatments did not significantly affect species richness and abundance of the canopy-inhabiting spiders. The species richness and abundance of the soil-dwelling spiders on the paddy field applied by the bioinsecticide was not different from those without the bioinsecticide. The treatments did not effect species composition of the canopy-inhabiting and the soil-dwelling spiders. Application of B. bassiana bioinsecticide was not harmful for the spiders in the rice field.

Abstract

Predatory arthropods inhabiting paddy rice ecosystems in Cianjur District, West Java. Predatory arthropods were surveyed in Cianjur District, West Java from July to November 1997, with objectives to observe the species of predatory arthropods inhabiting the ecosystems. Canopy-inhabiting and soil-dwelling arthropods were sampled using D-vac and pitfall traps, respectively. Results indicated that insecta and Arachnida were the most abundant predators in the ecosystem, with the total of 142 species. Predatory insects were dominated by Carabidae (27 species), and Staphylinidae (13 species) and spiders were dominated by Therididae (9 species), and Lycosidae (8 species). Thus, predatory-arthropods inhabiting the sawah ecosystems were very diverse.

Abstract

The parasitic level research and description of the parasitoid species which were parasitic towards Aphis gossypii (Glover) (Hemiptera : Aphididae ) origin the agroecosystem of the lowland and highland of South Sumatra has not been reported, although this information is needed as a foundation of biological control of A. gossypii in South Sumatra. The purpose of this study was to determine the parasitic level and provide information about the description of the parasitoid which were parasitic towards A. gossypii origin the agroecosystem of the lowland and highland of South Sumatra. Survey and exploration the parasitoid which were parasitic towards A. gossypii conducted at 11 sites in South Sumatra vegetable center.  The identification of parasitoid species was conducted in the laboratory of Entomology Department of the Faculty of Agriculture University of Sriwijaya. The results showed the parasitic level of Aphidius sp. and Diaeretiella rapae was higher during the dry season in both lowland and highland compared to the parasitic level of Aphelinus sp. However, Aphelinus sp. could only spread in the lowland. The main characteristics of Aphidius sp. (Aphidiidae) has shaped antennae filiform and segmented 13. The front wings have a triangular pterostigma. D. rapae, (Aphidiidae) has shaped antennae filiform and segmented 14. The front wings has a triangular pterostigma. The hind wing has a perfect basal cells. Aphelinus sp. (Aphelinidae) has an shaped goblets antennae and eight segmented and the last segments three of the antennae enlarged or club. Marginal venation long wings, while the venation postmarginal and stigma reduction. In addition there are two species of hyperparasitoid which were found to be parasitic towards parasitoid A. gossypii, were Ooencyrtus sp. and Aphiidencyrtus sp. (Encyrtidae) especially in the lowland.

Abstract

Lindiana, et al. Rice Cultivation Images by Local Farmers in Pemulutan District, Ogan Ilir, South Sumatra. JLSO 5(2):153-158. Plans and efforts in increasing rice productivity at riparian wetlands can be commenced by introducing relevant technologies; however, the selected technologies should be based on real needs or problems faced by local farmers. As a pre-requisite, if the needs and problems are not comprehensively understood, government intervention to introduce new technology may not be effective since the technology may not be relevant or affordable to local farmers. Objectives of this research are to analyze characteristics of the wetlands, farmer?s adoption capacity, and technological preferences. The research was conducted in five villages at Pemulutan District. Qualitative Grounded Theory and Quantitative Survey were employed through dialogues with 100 local farmers.  Results of the research indicated that any effort to increase riparian wetland productivity should consider the unpredictability of flood occurrences and prolonged drought. These unfavorable conditions have limited local farmers to only grow rice once per year. Local farmers were almost solely depending on rice and cultivation of other crops were rarely observed, except limited vegetables grown on elevated border of paddy fields.

Abstract

Hanif et al, 2017. Efficacy of Bacillus thuringiensis Barliner Bioinsecticide against  Gryllus bimaculatus De Geer (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) in Major Rice Crops and Ratooning Rice. JLSO 6(1):95-105. Crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus) are an important pests on rice that can reduce productivity. The application of Bacillus thuringiensis bioinsecticide is expected to be an alternative methode to control these pest. The objective of the study was to investigate optimal dose of B. thuringiensis in suppressing rice damage was caused by G. bimaculatus. The observation were conducted on rice cultivation in Pelabuhan Dalam Village, Pemulutan Subdistrict of Ogan Ilir Regency. The results showed that application of B. thuringiensis bioinsecticide had significant effects in suppressing rice crop damage by G. bimaculatus, but did not had significant effect on growth of rice plants.

Abstract

Hasbi et al, 2017. Farmer Perception to Chilli Cultivtion in Floating Agricultural System in Pelabuhan Dalam Village, Ogan Ilir. JLSO 6(2):126-133.The purpose of this research was to utilize potential  waste of local resource especially mineral bottle as a floating raft, to train farmer to construct it, to increase farm production, to socialize how to produce inexpensive, widely available, good quality and environmental friendly floating raft made of mineral bottle, and to evaluate farmers response. This research was conducted at Pelabuhan Dalam Village, Subdistrict of Pemulutan, District of Ogan Ilir.  The step of this research were socialization to farmers, display the system of floating cultivation and farmers perception evaluation.  The results showed that the system was prospective to be developed based on statements of interested farmers.  One of the important finding was that the system was easy to maintenance. The farmers were optimistic that the system could be developed by them selves.
