Abstract

The lack of Indonesian students achievement in the international assessment is due to several factors. Students are not familiar with the problems requiring reasoning, in particular the proportional reasoning. This research aims to identify the distribution and the Level of Cognitive Demands (LCD) of the proportional reasoning problems found in the Year 7 and Year 8 mathematics textbooks based on the 2013 curriculum (revised edition 2014). The data collection was conducted by identifying the proportional reasoning problems found in the whole chapters of the textbooks which are then analysed and classified using the Smiths and Stein?s criteria of LCD (1998). The results reveal that the proportional reasoning problems were only found in the three of 17 chapters namely ratio and proportion, rectangle and triangle, and Pythagorean Theorem, which represent different LCD including Lower-LCD (Low-M and Low-P) and Higher-LCD (High-P). Out of 69 proportional reasoning problem found in the textbooks, the percentage of higher-LCD problems (n=29 ; 42.03%) is less than lower-LCD (n=40;57.97%). In addition, the higher-LCD problems found were only the high-P type. None was found to meet the requirement of High-DM demanding students to conduct ?doing mathematics?, complex approach and self-monitoring or self regulation of students? cognitive process. It is recommended that the proportional reasoning problems, including some High-DM problems, should be provided in each topic in Indonesian mathematics textbooks.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.22342/jme.9.1.4145.55-68

Abstract

The 2013 curriculum is developed with refinements of mind-set, one of them is a reinforcement of multidisciplinary learning, or commonly known as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Learning tool as one of learning support facilities also should be developed following the development of the 2013 curriculum. However, STEM learning tools are still unavailable. STEM implementation can be successful if supported by programs that are based on best practices for program design. One of the learning models that support them is PjBL (Project Based Learning). Also, there is an ability that is closely related to STEM implementation, namely spatial ability. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to develop STEM learning tools through PjBL to improve students? spatial ability which valid. Learning tools developed were lesson plans, project worksheets, student worksheets, AutoCAD 2D Guideline, and spatial ability tests. This research was development research. The instrument used was validation sheets. The validation phase STEM-PjBL learning tools consisting of lesson plans, project worksheets, student worksheets, and spatial ability tests consisted of two phases. It was because only three of five validators who stated that the learning tools had been possible to use with minor revisions in the first phase. These results indicated that the learning tools were not however valid. As a result, the learning tools needed to be revised following the comments and suggestions provided by the validators. After that, the learning tools were validated again by the validators. The second phase validation result was all validators stated that the learning tools had been possible to use. In contrast to these tools, the AutoCAD 2D Guideline was only validated once because, in the first phase validation, all validators stated that the AutoCAD 2D Guideline was worth using with minor revision. Thus, STEM-PjBL learning tools to improve students' spatial ability have met the valid criteria.Keywords: development, learning tools, STEM, project-based learning, spatial ability.

Abstract

One of the competencies which students must possess is a mathematical understanding. Another aspect that supports understanding is self-concept. An effort that can be taken as a solution for improving students? understanding and the self-concept is a model of learning which can lead students to find their concept. This model is often called discovery learning. This study aims to improve students? mathematical understanding and the self-concept through the discovery learning model. In this study, the researcher used quantitative research. The population of this study was all senior high school Ulumuddin students in the 2016/2017 school year. The sample of this study was 40 students in grade 10 who were randomly chosen from two classes. The data in this study were obtained using instruments compiled in the form of questionnaires and tests that were answered by the respondents. The results showed that the improvement of students? mathematical understanding and self-concept who obtained learning with the discovery learning model was better than students who gain learning without using the model of Discovery Learning. However, there was no interaction between the model and the levels of understanding and the self-concept of students.Keywords: mathematical understanding, self-concept, discovery learning.

Abstract

Reading, interpreting and constructing graphs are important skills for junior high school students. The graph as a mathematical expression is important as graphs can represent or summarize data and communicate data for easy interpretation. The purpose of this study is to analyze the errors that occur in students in solving the word in class VIII-1 MTsN Model Banda Aceh. Data were obtained based on test of 36 students and continued by interview of five students. Based on the results of data analysis found that students? make mistakes in solving word problem related to the graphs in either understanding or reading graphs or drawing graphs. Keywords:error analysis, word problem, graph.

Abstract

Metacognitive skill is the awareness of one's thinking about the thinking process itself, whereas consciousness is the awareness of one's thinking about what to do. The subjects for this research were five students from class VII-1 SMP 1 Banda Aceh. Research data collection used the sheet metacognitive questions. Data were analyzed descriptively to interpret students' metacognitive skills in learning how to use Cabri Geometry II Plus software. The results showed that the metacognitive abilities of students increased from the first meeting to the fourth meeting.Keywords: Metacognitive, Cabri Geometry II Plus

Abstract

Students have difficulties in learning statistics. For example, students are difficult to solve problem related to reciting data from bar charts, calculate the mean value, and make a pie chart. One of the causes is statistics seldom connected with real-world applications, whereas students should be learning statistics in a real activity-based learning environment. PjBL (Project Based Learning) is a model of learning that integrates new knowledge based on experience in real activity and an in-depth investigation of a real-world topic. The purpose of this study was to describe the students? project task answers and constraints through the implementation of PjBL. Subjects in this study were 29 students of class IX-5 SMPN 6 Banda Aceh. The data analyzed were students? project task answers worked in groups and videos. The results showed that 2 of 5 groups could think of useful data that they can gather around them. As they displayed the collected data, all groups chose bar chart. No one group displayed data using pie chart. Furthermore, in interpreting their data, nevertheless 2 of 5 groups could interpret the data well. Moreover, there were students who were less active and less cooperative in the group, however there were students who were usually less active, but they could cooperate in group when researcher implemented the PjBL. When students presented project task, there was student who memorized the project task, so that when he forgot what he must presented, he spontaneously asked his group members what he had not delivered at the presentation. Keywords:learning process, statistics, project based learning.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to analyze the problem solving abilities and beliefs of prospective teachers in solving problem solving problems. The type of research used in this study is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. Based on this research, it is known that students with different abilities can do problem solving procedures, ranging from understanding problems, planning, carrying out problem solving and checking again but the results are different in each ability. Students' confidence in solving problem solving problems is relatively the same for all levels of ability, namely they believe that solving problems solving problems takes a long time, except that the length of time required for each level of the subject is different. The three subjects also believe that problem solving is useful in learning mathematics and in everyday life. They also believe that problem-solving abilities can be improved by the learning process.Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk analisis kemampuan pemecahan masalah dan keyakinan calon guru  dalam menyelesaikan soal pemecahan masalah. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Berdasarkan penelitian ini diketahui mahasiswa dengan kemampuan berbeda dapat melakukan prosedur pemecahan masalah, mulai dari memahami masalah, merencanakan, melaksanakan pemecahan masalah dan memeriksa kembali, tetapi hasilnya berbeda pada setiap kemampuan. Keyakinan mahasiswa dalam menyelesaikan soal pemecahan masalah relatif sama untuk semua tingkat kemampuan, yaitu mereka yakin menyelesaikan soal  pemecahan masalah membutuhkan waktu yang lama, hanya saja lama waktu yang dibutuhkan untuk masing-masing tingkatan subjek berbeda. Ketiga subjek juga yakin bahwa pemecahan masalah berguna dalam pembelajaran matematika dan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Mereka juga yakin bahwa kemampuan pemecahan masalah dapat ditingkatkan dengan proses belajar.

Abstract

Student mastery of the basic arithmetic operations of mathematics is still low, especially for students who received school education background before heterogens. This research was conducted to determine the type of error that made the students in doing mathematics basic arithmetic operations, increase students' ability to perform basic arithmetic operations through the implementation of the mathematics matriculation, and suitability scores obtained by students with a score of predetermined targets. This research is a descriptive qualitative research subjects were 27 students of class X SMK 2 Langsa. Data were analyzed using the concept of Miles and Huberman: includes the step of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results showed that the errors made by the students in solving basic math arithmetic operations are procedural and conceptual errors. Procedural errors do end results is a mistake, an error in the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of integers. Conceptual error committed is a mistake to equate the denominator in the operation of addition and subtraction of fractions, simplifying error in root form, and errors in rationalizing the denominator.

Abstract

Relational understanding in mathematics is important for the student's it causes understanding the mathematical concepts will be memorable if he knows the process of getting the concept by linking it with the knowledge to be learned. This study aimed to examine the relational understanding of students in discovering the concept of f '(x) using Geometer's Sketchpad, and the relational understanding of students in discovering the concept of f (x) = x2 + c let f' (x) = 2x  using Geometer's Sketchpad.  It also investigated the students' responses when they use Geometer's Sketchpad in understanding the derivative function. The study used a qualitative approach. Subjects in this study were three Year 11 students of one the junior high school in Meuredu, Aceh, Indonesia. The instruments were observation sheet, interview guides, student worksheets and test questions. The data analysis included the classification of information obtained from observations when the subjects used software Sketchpad Geometers in their learning. Information about students' relational understanding obtained from the student worksheets reinforced with test questions and interviews so that the results can be accounted for. This study concluded that (1) students' relational understanding (Subjects RV, subject MR, subject AA) in discovering the concept of f '(x) using Geometer's Sketchpad was good; (2) students' relational understanding (Subjects RV, subject MR, subject AA) in discovering the concept of f (x) = x2 + c let f '(x) = 2x using Geometer's Sketchpad was a good; and (3) the responses of Subjects RV, subject MR, subject AA in using Geometer's Sketchpad were positive, each research subject was very pleased and liked to use Geometer's Sketchpad in understanding the derivative function.

Abstract

Questioning skills is one of the basic skills taught are important to master teachers. Lack of good questioning skills possessed by teachers can lead students in an attention too. This study aimed to describe the questioning skills junior high school teacher in mathematics. This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive research. Subjects in this study are two mathematics teachers from two different schools: one teacher MTsN Matangglumpangdua and one teacher SMP N 5 Peusangan. Qualitative data analysis performed on both the teacher to see the questioning skills of teachers in learning. In general, teachers questioning skills include aspects of pausing, prompting and probing in mathematics has been done, but not all of the indicators on each aspect met for each meeting in both schools. In a study in MTsN during two meetings, at the prompting aspect is not done once the indicator solve the question into several sub-questions of the original question and the probing aspects of displacement indicators do not turn. Furthermore, in a study in junior high school for two meetings, on aspects prompting two indicators do not solve the question into several sub-questions of the original question and review (repeat) information previously provided.
