Abstract

Light plays an important role in the avian life. The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of monochromatic light on serum estrogen concentrations and profile the oviduct, that were the length and weight of the oviduct in the quail. Two hundred and seventy quails were divided into nine treatments of light, with ten replications and three quails in each replication. The treatments were without light,  controls  with 15 and 25 W, red, green, and blue lights with intensities of  15 and 25 lux. Control  treatment used incandescent bulb.  The red,  green,  and  blue lights  were  provided  by   light emitting   diodes  (LED). All lights   treatment   were   given   for   14 h  daily,   started from 17.00 to 07.00. Parameters   measured  were  serum estrogen  concentrations, and  weights  and  lengths  of   the  oviduct  on  weeks 5,  7,  and  9.  Quails   exposed  to  monochromatic   light had  higher  serum  estrogen  concentrations (P<0,05). Quails  exposed to monochromatic light had  better  weights  and  lenghts of  the  oviduct  development. Blue light could be used to increase serum estrogen concentrations and stimulate shell gland development.

Abstract

The timing of artificial insemination relies largely on behavioral observation of estrus. The problemfaced is that not all cattle shows signs of estrus significantly, which affect the accuracy of insemination,and therefore,the success rate of Artificial Insemination is less than 50%. Recently, the determination ofestradiol levels as an indicator of estrus is done by observation of physical signs and doing ELISA test,which is expensive and provide longer time. In order to solve these problems, a tool estrus detector is madenamely Electronic Nose (EN). Determination of estrus with EN is cheaper because it does not need to usecomplexmaterials, just only use the samples. Mechanism of action of EN is using a sensor that is vaporized,while animals estrus will emit pheromones that are vaporized. Theaim of this study was to determinewhether the stage of estrus can be detected by using EN. Urine of female Ongole Crossbred which maintainedin Kuwang, district of Cangkringan, Yogyakarta, with BCS of 3 was used in this research. The sample wascollected shortly before injection of dinoprost as estrus synchronization then it repeated when cattle got&nbsp;estrus phase. The urinary sample of the estrus cattle was sensitive to methane, propane, butane, whereasin non-estrus cattle, besides the three of these component (methane, propane, butane), sensor was alsocaptured hydrogen sulfide. Furthermore, our electronic nose had been able to distinguish estrus phase andnon-estrus based on domain area.Thus, the Electronic Nose is very prospect used as a detector of estrus incattle. Hydrogen disulfide could possibly be used as an indicator comparison between cow estrus and nonestrus.

Abstract

Colistin sulphate is the ultimate antimicrobial choice for the treatment of multidrug resistance gram negative bacteria infections with in human. The purposes of this study were to detect the presence of colistin resistant E. coli and mcr-1 gene in broiler and to transfer the mcr-1 gene to Salmonella enteritidis ATCC 13076. A total of 54 one day old broilers were divided into three groups that consists of 18 chicks broiler per group and raised up to 40 days old. The first group was used as control. The first treatment group was given colistin sulphate 5 ìg/g feed for 40 days and broilers in second treatment group was given&nbsp;80.000 IU/kg body weight for first three days. Swab cloaca samples were taken every 10 days from each broiler. At age 40 days all chickens were slaughtered and meat samples were collected. Samples of cloacal swabs, fresh and cooked meat were examined for the presence of colistin resistant E. coli and mcr-1 gene. Susceptibility to colistin sulfate was conducted by agar dilution method, and detection of mcr-1 gene was conducted using polymerase chain reaction. The results showed that no colistin resistant E. coli was detected in the control group. Colistin resistant E. coli (27.78%) and mcr-1 gene (20.00%) were detected in animals in the first treatment group, respectively. Whilst 11.11% colistin resistant E. coli and 5.56% were carriying mcr-1 gene in the second treatment group. Colistin resistant E. coli were found 5.56% from raw meat samples and 3.70% had mcr-1 gene. Transfer of mcr-1 gene from colistin resistant E. coli to Salmonella enteritidis ATCC 13076 was success. These results showed the necessity of limitation usage of colistin sulphate in food animal.&nbsp;

Abstract

Pregnancy is an integral part of the circulatory system between pups and mother. Growth anddevelopment of pups is determined by intake from their mother. The purpose of this study was to measurethe growth of pup?s bones given ethanol extract purwoceng (Pampinella alpine) for 1 to 13 days of ratgestation. Eight pregnant rats were divided into two groups: control group and purwoceng group that wasgiven ethanol extract purwoceng at a dose of 25 mg/300 g bw. The born pups were observed for 70 days tomeasure the growth and development of head bone, back bone, front legs bone, and hind legs. The resultsshowed that the growth and development of all bones parameters of female pups were higher on purwocenggroup than control the bone while male pups did not difference between purwoceng and control group exceptback bone and hind leg bone. The conclusion of this study is that administration of purwoceng roots ethanolextract on pregnant rats during organogenesis phase can extends the bone length of their pups.

Abstract

Bats have the second largest diversity in mammalian classes after rodentia (Nurfitrianto et al., 2013). Bat population reaches approximately 1100 species (Teeling et.al 2005). In Indonesia there are 205 or 21% of known world bat species (Suyanto 2001). Bats are the only flying mammals. The ability bat to fly is supported by the shape of the extremities and also the adaptation of the cardiovascular organs. Based on empirical studies of cardiovascular was known that cardiac muscle mass is a good indicator for the degree of adaptive specialization of prolonged locomotor activity, in both birds and mammals. Data on cardiovascular muscle morphology and muscles that support flying ability will provide an overview of the behavior, ecology and physiology of certain animals (Bishop 1997).Several studies have been conducted to study the cardiovascular system of bats. Research on bat hematology profile has been done (Heard and Whittier 1997, Mclaughlin et.al 2007, Wawrocka and Bartonicka 2014, McMichael et al. 2015, Ratnasooriya 2016, Rashid et al, 2016, Rahma et al., 2018). Joseph (1908) says that every animal has a different size and heart shape to each other. This heart size difference is influenced by the size of the body and the high energy required by the animal (Joseph 1908).Bat's heart rate is known to increase during flight (Thomas and Suthers 1972). This is causes an increase in the rate of metabolism. Writing this paper will discuss about the uniqueness of the bat's heart so that it can support its ability to fly.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan menguji pengaruh tombong kelapa yang dicampurkan ke dalam pakan terhadap parameter kesehatan tikus putih betina dara melalui nilai hematologi lengkap. Parameter hematologi yang dianalisa meliputi hemoglobin, eritrosit, leukosit, hematokrit, dan diff erensial leukosit. Penelitian ini menggunakan 4 kelompok perlakuan dosis tombong kelapa 0 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg, dan 200 mg/ekor/hari, masing-masing terdiri dari 6 ulangan. Serbuk kasar tombong kelapa dicampurkan ke dalam pakan komersil dan dibentuk kembali menjadi pakan pelet. Dosis campuran tombong kelapa tersebut diberikan sebanyak satu kali/hari. Sampel darah diambil selama 4 minggu. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, kadar hemoglobin tidak meningkat secara nyata (P&gt;0,05). Jumlah Hb normal, yaitu 11.93-15.19 g%. Eritrosit dan leukosit, menunjukkan peningkatan dan penurunan secara nyata (P&lt;0,05). Rata-rata jumlah eritrosit 6.03-8.96 juta/mm3, leukosit 7.18-15.77 ribu/mm3 terindikasi normal. Leukosit di minggu keempat pada dosis 50 mg, 100 mg, dan 200 mg/ekor/hari menurun dari batas normal, yaitu 6-10 ribu/mm3. Hematokrit tidak meningkat secara nyata (P&gt;0,05). Diff erensial leukosit, yaitu limfosit minggu pertama, dan monosit minggu ketiga meningkat signifi kan (P&gt;0,05). Netrofi l di minggu pertama terjadi penurunan secara signifi kan (P&lt;0,05) dibandingkan kelompok kontrol. Eosinofi l menunjukkan perubahan secara signifi kan di minggu ketiga (P&lt;0,05). Rata-rata nilai eosinofi l berada dalam jumlah normal, yaitu 1-4%. Basofi l tidak ditemukan pada pemberian diet pakan tombong kelapa. Kesimpulan bahwa, tombong kelapa tidak berpengaruh pada homoestasis darah. Dosis yang terbaik yaitu 50 mg, dan 100 mg/ekor/hari.

Abstract

Penelitian dilakukan untuk mengetahui kualitas spermatozoa epididimis kerbau belang selama proses pembekuan (kriopreservasi). Bahan pengencer yang digunakan adalah AndroMed® sebagai kontrol (AM) serta kombinasi AndroMed® dengan 0,2% (S0,2) dan 0,4% sukrosa (S0,4). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa persentase motilitas spermatozoa epididimis kerbau belang setelah thawing dalam bahan pengencer AM (41%), nyata (P&lt;0,05) lebih rendah dibandingkan dengan S0,2 (46%) dan S0,4 (46%). Demikian pula halnya dengan persentase hidup spermatozoa setelah thawing dalam bahan pengencer AM, S0,2, dan S0,4 secara berturut-turut adalah 52,2; 59,8 dan 60,8% (P&lt;0,05). Sementara itu, tidak terdapat perbedaan nyata (P&gt;0,05) pada persentase membran plasma utuh (MPU) setelah thawing dalam ketiga bahan pengencer. Persentase MPU setelah thawing perlakuan AM, S0,2, dan S0,4 adalah masing-masing 68; 68,8 dan 66,8%. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa penambahan sukrosa sebagai krioprotektan eksternal ke dalam bahan pengencer AndroMed® dapat meningkatkan kualitas spermatozoa epididimis kerbau belang setelah thawing.

Abstract

Hematology value is important to evaluate individual health status. This study was purposed to observe hematological value of male and female of Cynopterus tithaecheilus which has not been reported yet. The study was conducted on 16 Cynopterus tithaecheilus (6 adult males, 6 adult females and 4 juvenil) to study about haematological profile. Blood samples were taken using tuberculin needle and analyzed by hematology analyzer for hematological value. Female Cynopterus tithaecheilus has higher number of white blood cells than male, but the differentiation of white blood cell was not different. Male Cynopterus tithaecheilus has a higher platelet than female. Generally Cynopterus tithaecheilus juvenil has a higher leukocyte and a higher platelet than adult.

Abstract

The quail?s egg have value of nutrient which similar to the chicken?s egg and the duck?s egg. Various of the programme of the light to improve repair of the quantity and the quality of the quail egg. The objectives of this research were to applied monochromatic light to repair the quality and quantity of the quail egg. Two hundred and seventy female quails (DOQ) were divided into nine treatments of light, with ten replications and three quails in each replication, the treatments were without light, controls with 15 and 25 W, red, green, and blue lights with intensities of 15 and 25 lux. Control treatment used incandescent bulb. The red, green, and blue lights were provided by light emitting diodes (LED). All lights treatment were given for 14 h daily, started from 17.00 to 07.00. Parameters measured were amount of the egg weekly, henday egg production, and quality of the egg consist of the weights of the egg, protein and fat of the egg. The result showed that quails exposed to blue light had higher of the amount of the egg, henday production, and the weights of the egg, while the quality of the egg, such as protein and fat in the egg were not change (P>0,05). Blue light could be used to improve repairing quantities of the quail egg.

Abstract

Red yeast rice is a fermented product of rice and mold Monascus purpureus. Red yeast rice contains secondary metabolites such as lovastatin, phenol and flavonoids that have potential as antioxidants. This study was aimed to examine the effectiveness of red yeast rice antioxidants on performance of japanese quail administered with dexamethasone through the parameters of feed digestibility, feed consumption, growth in body weight, stress index, malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). This study used a factorial completely randomized design. Group (K0) was a control, group (D) were quails given only dexamethasone at a dose of 1.25 mg/g BW for 7 days after one-week adaptation. Group D+VC were quails given dexamethasone at a dose of 1.25 mg/g BW then added with vitamin C at a dose of 20 mg. Group D+K1, D+K2, and D+K3 were quails given dexamethasone then orally given red yeast rice of 18 mg, 24 mg, and 30 mg for 14 days. The parameter of feed consumption, feed digestibility and body weight did not significantly show different result between treatments (P&gt;0.05). The heterophyl/lympocyte ratio was elevated when dexametasone administered and tended to decrease when administered with red yeast rice. Result also showed that red yeast rice has the potential as an antioxidant in quail administered with dexamethasone as seen from the tendency of decreased level of MDA and increased level of SOD enzyme.
