Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to design a story book based on West Kalimantan folktales to support teaching reading narrative text. In this research, the method was developmental research that used ADDE instructional design as the phase in developing the materials.  The story book is intended to be supplementary materials in teaching reading narrative text. The story book was assessed by the experts according to several aspects. Total score of the expert assessment of the content was 95.83% by the maximum score was 100% and total score of the expert assessment of the illustration design was 95.45% by the maximum score was 100%.The experts assessment result showed that the story book was suitable and in good quality to be used by the teacher and students as supplementary material to support teaching reading narrative text.Keywords: Local Folktales, ADDIE Approach, Reading Materials Abstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk merancang sebuah buku cerita berdasarkan cerita daerah Kalimantan Barat untuk mendukung pengajaran membaca teks naratif. Metode yang di gunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pengembangan materi yang menerapkan ADDE sebagai prosedur. Buku cerita di gunakan sebagai materi tambahan dalam mengajarkan membaca teks naratif. Buku cerita telah di nilai oleh dua orang ahli berdasarkan beberapa aspek. Nilai total dari penilaian ahli berdasarkan isi buku cerita adalah 95.83% dengan nilai maksimal 100% dan nilai total dari penilaian ahli berdasarkan bentuk ilustrasi adalah 95.45% dengan nilai maksimal 100%. Hasil dari penilaian ahli menunjukan bahwa buku cerita yang di buat oleh peneliti sesuai dan memiliki kualitas yang baik untuk digunakan oleh guru dan siswa sebagai materi tambahan untuk mendukung pengajaran membaca teks naratif.Kata kunci: Cerita Daerah, Pendekatan ADDIE, Materi Reading

Abstract

Thesis writing is important in higher education because it shows the students ability in doing research and producing written academic results. Generally, it is assume that university students are educated people and therefore have an ability to produce a thesis. Yet, this is not always as easy as it seems. For students studying in English academic culture, for example, thesis writing brings two challenges, First, a challenge of writing in a language that is not their own, English. Second, a challenge of producing written work in a new cultural context, that is English academic culture. These challenges often cause great difficulties in producing the thesis for the Indonesian students. Key Word: Perspectives, Indonesian Students, Thesis, English Academic Culture.

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this research is to improve students’ vocabulary, especially in meaning and spelling of vocabularies. This research was conducted on the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Pontianak in academic year 2014/2015. In this research, the subject is class VII E that consists of 30 students. The researcher conducted a classroom action research in her research and acted as the teacher during the research period. The data were collected by using direct and measurement technique. The tools of data collecting were observation checklist, field note, and test. Riddle game was used as the technique in this research which is conducted the research in two cycles. The research findings showed that the mean score of students’ vocabulary test in the first cycle is 59.83 to 76.20 in the second cycle which means it successffully passed the KKM. It can be concluded that the students’ vocabulary taught by using riddle game was improved. Keywords: Vocabulary, Game, Riddle Game Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam kosakata. Penelitian ini telah dilakukan terhadap siswa kelas VII SMP N 8 Pontianak pada tahun akademik 2014/2015. Dalam penelitian ini sasaran penelitiannya adalah siswa kelas VII E yang terdiri dari 30 orang siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian tindakan kelas dan berperan sebagai guru selama masa penelitia berlangsung. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan tehnik penilaian dan observasi langsung dengan menggunakan tabel pemeriksaan, catatan lapangan, dan tes. Tehnik yang digunakan adalah riddle game dan dilaksanakan dalam 2 siklus. Hasil penelitian menunjukan skor rata-rata tes siswa pada siklus pertama adalah 59,83 menjadi 76,20 pada siklus kedua yang berarti siswa dapat melewati standar KKM. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa pemahaman siswa terhadap kosakata, khususnya pada arti dan pengejaan kata dapat meningkat melalui pengajaran menggunakan riddle game.   Keywords: Kosakata, Permainan, Riddle Game

Abstract

Non-verbal behaviour is a significant aspect of communication. However, despite its importance, teachers are more often inclined to use it in language teaching and learning. It is therefore important to view that to appreciate nonverbal communications values and to integrate it into the context of language teachings are not the same. Efforts should be made from both sides, i.e. those who develop theory, methodology, and materials as well as those who apply these into practice in order to promote the best practice of communicative language learning and teaching. It is expected that the issues raised can soon be addressed so that the teaching and learning of foreign languages in Indonesia can make fruitful progress in the near future.

Email: roxas113@rocketmail.com Abstract: The purpose of this research is to investigate whether the use of manga as a media is able to improve students? vocabulary of eleven grade of SMAN 3 Singkawang in academic year 2015/2016. The method used in this research is Classroom Action Research that give attention to the cycle of teaching and learning in classroom to measure the improvement made from the treatment. The sample of this research was 30 students of eleven grade of Social 2. The researcher used the measurement technique to collect the data and the tool of data collecting was test and questionnaire. The researcher used the mean score for analyzing both the test result and the questionnaire result. The test result is improved from 60.17 to 68.3 while the questionnaire result is 84.85 which categorized as moderately positive. The result of test and questionnaire in this research able to satisfy the standard minimum in the school. It proves that the use of Manga is able to improve students? vocabulary. Key Words: Manga (Detective Conan), Improving Vocabulary Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah pengunaan manga sebagai media mampu meningkatkan kosakata siswa kelas sebelas di SMAN 3 Singkawang tahun ajaran 2015/2016. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ini yaitu penelitian tindakan kelas yang berfokus pada siklus pengajaran dan pembelajaran di kelas untuk mengukur peningkatan yang berasal dari treatment. Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah 30 siswa kelas sebelas ips 2. Peneliti menggunakan teknik pengukuran untuk mengumpulkan data dan alat yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data adalah tes dan angket. Peneliti menggunakan nilai rata rata untuk menganalisa baik hasil tes maupun hasil angket. Hasil tes mengalami peningkatan dari 60.17 menjadi 68.3 sedangkan hasil angket adalah 84.85 yang dikategorikan sebagai positif menengah. Hasil dari tes dan angket dalam penelitian ini mampu mencapai standard minimal yang ada disekolah. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan manga mampu meningkatkan kosakata siswa. Abstract

Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui ke-efektifitas-an mengajarkan membaca dan memahami teks report dengan menggunakan teknik Venn diagram di kelas XI SMA Negeri 4 Pontianak tahun ajaran 2014/2015. Teknik ini mengkombinasikan antara pelajaran bahasa Inggris dan Matematika. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah pre-eksperimen dengan total jumlah 36 siswa sebagai sampel penelitian. Hasil dari analisis penelitian menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata nilai pre-test siswa meningkat dari 70.44 menjadi 83.61 pada nilai post-test akhir. Hasil analisis dari t-test menunjukkan bahwa mengajarkan membaca dan memahami teks report dengan menggunakan teknik Venn diagram dapat meningkatkan kemampuan belajar siswa. Hasil dari effect size juga membuktikan bahwa teknik Venn diagram di kategorikan sebagai sangat efektif dan berhasil dalam meningkatkan pencapaian siswa dalam memahami teks report.   Kata kunci: Membaca, Pemahaman, Venn diagram   Abstract: This research aimed to test the effectiveness of teaching reading comprehension of report text by using Venn diagrams technique on the second grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Pontianak in academic year 2014/2015. This technique combined between English language and Math subject. The methodology of this research is a pre-experimental research with total 36 numbers of students as the sample of research. The result of analysis on this research showed that the mean score of pre-test improved from 70.44 to 83.61 in the post-test. The result of t-test showed that teaching reading comprehension of report text by using Venn diagram technique can improve students? ability in learning. The result of analysis on effect size also proved that Venn diagram technique categorized as highly effective and succeeded to improve students? achievement in comprehend the report text.   Keywords: Reading, Comprehension, Venn diagrams

Abstract

Abstract : The purpose of this research is to investigate how well is the ability of  the Third Semester  Regular A Students of the English Education Study Program in Academic Year 2012/2013 in pronouncing voiced and voiceless consonants. Method of this research is descriptive study by holding three time of test using minimal pairs. Subject of this research is all of the Third Semester  Regular A Students of the English Education Study Program in Academic Year 2012/2013. Data of the research was collected by using pronouncing practice oral test of minimal pairs. Result of this research is the main score of students’ pronouncing ability at the first test was 91.37, the second test was 89.40 and the last test was 91.48 which was categorized as good to excellent. The result of the students’ mean score had shown their significant ability in pronouncing English voiced and voiceless consonants. Abstrak : Tujuan dari Penelitian ini adalah untuk mennyelidiki seberapa baik kemampuan mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Reguler A semester ketiga tahun pelajaran 2012/2013 dalam melafalkan konsonan voiced dan voiceless Bahasa Inggris menggunakan minimal pairs. Metode penelitian ini adalah studi deskriptif dengan melakukan tiga kali test menggunakan minimal pairs. Subjek penelitian adalah seluruh mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Reguler A Semester ketiga tahun pelajaran 2012/2013. Data penelitian didapatkan dengan menggunakan test lisan praktek pelafalan minimal pairs. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah nilai rata-rata yang diperoleh mahasiswa pada test pertama adalah 91,37, test kedua 89,40 dan test terakhir 91,48 yang dikategorikan baik sampai dengan luar biasa. Hasil nilai rata-rata mahasiswa ini telah menunjukkan kemampuan signifikan mereka dalam melafalkan  konsonan voiced dan voiceless Bahasa Inggris. Abstract

Abstract: This research was conducted to verify the previous research finding shown by Wini Miaryuna (2008). The number of Year-8 students of “SMP Negeri 16 Pontianak” are 331 people. The sample is year-8 B, which consist of 32 students. This research using direct and indirect technique. To gather the data, checklist item, tally, daily score,mid score and final score are used in order to observe the data. The research found out that the typical misbehavior in the classroom was looking outside,beside, back and front. The average degree of students’ achievement who doing misbehaviour in learning English is 5.7 and the average degree of students’ achievement who do not doing misbehavior is 7.2. The degree of the correlation between students’misbehavior and the students’ English learning achievement is (-0.77) it is categorized strong correlation. This result showed that there is a negative correlation between students misbehavior and students’ English learning achievement. Key words : Qualitative Research, Direct and Indirect Technique,  Misbehavior Abstrak : Penelitian ini bertujuan membuktikan penelitian sebelum nya oleh Wini Miaryuna (2008). Total keseluruhan murid kelas 8 SMP N 16 Pontianak adalah 331 orang. Kelas yang di ambil untuk penelitian adalah kelas 8B,yang terdiri dari 32 siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan teknik langsung dan tidak langsung. Untuk mengumpulkan data digunakan  tabel ceklis, nilai sehari-hari, nilai mid dan nilai ulangan akhir. Penelitian menemukan bahwa kelakuan buruk yang sering di perlihatkan murid adalah melihat keluar,kesamping ke depan dan belakang. Nilai rata- rata murid yang melakukan kebiasaan buruk adalah 5.7 dan nilai rata-rata murid yang tidak melakukan nya adalah 7.2. rata-rata dari korelasi antara kelakuan buruk murid dengan nilai mereka adalah (-0.77) yang dikategorikan sebagai korelasi kuat. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa ada hubungan antara kelakuan buruk murid saat dikelas dengan nilai bahasa inggris yang mereka capai. Kata Kunci : Penelitian Kualitative, Teknik Langsung dan Tidak Langsung, Kelakuan Buruk.

Abstract

Abstract:The purpose of this research is to evaluate and to provide information about the quality of English Summative test of grade XI SMA Negeri 5 Pontianak made by the teacher in academic year 2014/ 2015 by measuring the validity which consist of content validity, level of difficulty, discriminating power and the reliability of the test. This research is descriptive study. The test being analyzed are 50 multiple choice items. The data were collected by using a documentary technique. The data were taken from the items of English Summative test made by the teacher for grade XI, answer key, students’ answer sheets, and test table of specification. The finding shows that the content validity of the test is 92%, there are 46 test items are good and 4 test items should be revised. The mean of level difficulty of the test is 0.45 (moderate), discriminating power is 0.24 (moderate) and reliability of the test is 0.64 (substantial). From the result, it is concluded that the test items have given a big contribution for the teacher to measure the students’ competence. The test items already fulfilled the requirements of good test, but still need some revision on some items. Keywords: Item Analysis Made By The Teacher.   Abstrak:Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengevaluasi dan menyediakan informasi tentang kualitas soal Bahasa Inggris Sumatif kelas XI SMA Negeri 5 Pontianak yang dibuat oleh guru pada tahun akademik 2014/ 2015 dengan mengukur validitas yang terdiri atas validitas isi, tingkat kesukaran, daya pembeda, dan reliabilitas pada soal. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif. Soal yang dianalisis sebanyak 50 butir soal pilihan ganda. Data dari penelitian ini dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan teknik dokumentasi. Data diambil dari butir-butir soal Sumatif Bahasa Inggris yang dibuat oleh guru kelas XI, kunci jawaban, lembar jawaban siswa, dan kisi-kisi pembuatan soal. Hasil temuan menunjukkan bahwa validitas isi test adalah 92%, ada 46 butir test yang baik dan 4 butir tes yang harus diperbaiki. Nilai rata-rata tingkat kesukaran tes 0,45 (sedang), daya pembeda 0,24 (sedang) dan reliabilitas tes 0,64 (kuat). Dari hasil tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa soal ini telah memberikan kontribusi besar kepada guru untuk mengukur kompetensi siswa. Butir soal telah memenuhi persyaratan sebagai soal yang baik, tapi masih dibutuhkan beberapa revisi pada beberapa butir soal. Kata Kunci: Analisis Soal Buatan Guru.

Abstract

 Abstract Indonesian students learn English as a foreign language. They may transfer their first language into their target language. The interference can occur in various aspects like pronunciation. The purpose of this research is to find out whether or not students transfer their first language (Malay) into the target language (English) when pronouncing English voiceless stops and to find how often the transfer is made by the students. The method is Contrastive Analysis (CA). It contrasts the differences of L1 and L2 to predict and to explain the problems that learners might encounter in their target language learning. The subject of this research is the English Language Education Study Program students of Academic Year 2009/2010. Their L1 is Malay. The data were collected through direct and indirect observation. Direct observation was done to observe students’ pronunciation of words tested. Indirect observation was done by replaying the record to confirm the measurement made on the first direct checking. Native speakers’ help was also needed in this indirect observation in reanalyzing the data.  Based on the result, the researcher finds that interference happens, and the frequency is quite often. It shows that even though students have learned English for years, they are still making errors in pronunciation, especially in pronouncing aspirated voiceless stop phonemes. The conclusion is that the differences between Malay and English in the sound system, especially in term of aspiration could cause interference.
