Abstract

The purpose of present study is to critically assess the reading comprehension textbooks which have been prescribed for use at the English Education Department of Public Islamic Higher Education in West Sumatera. The writer used a criteria taken from Cunningswoth’ s (1995) and Miekley’s (2005). These include (1) Aims and Approaches; (2) Design and Organization; (3) Content; (4) Skills; (5) Vocabulary and Grammar; (6) Exercises and Activities; (7) Methodology; (8) Attractiveness of the Text and Physical Make-Up; (9) Teacher’s Manual; and (10) Practical Consideration. To interpret the checklist, the four rating scale was used, namely excellent, good, fair, and poor. The research showed that every textbook has strong and weak points. The result of this analysis could be used as the basis to gain more effective reading textbooks for the lecturer of reading comprehension.

Abstract

The integration of life skills in English language teaching has to be managed properly to achieve an optimal result. The exploration to the fields reveals some problems on their implementation: (1) classroom management, (2) selection of learning materials, (3) learning assessment, and (4) selection of learning methods. In addition, most teachers were fully satisfied with the existing model due to the following reasons: (1) requiring an extra preparation and teaching media, (2) incomplete communication task executions, and (3) inflexibility of model to apply in any class. To make the model of implementation better some recommendation are made: (1) incorporating materials reflecting life skills, (2) providing more comprehensible inputs, (3) developing a representative assessments, and (4) selecting a learning method that guide teacher to gradually develop communicative competence and simultaneously develop life skills.

Abstract

The final objective of this research is to produce guidelines for character-based English language lesson plan for the teachers of Junior Secondary Schools in Surakarta city.This research employed Research and Development (R&D) method comprising three phases, namely: exploration phase (Year 2012), model development phase (tahun 2013), andmodel evaluation phase (Year 2014). In the first phase, the existence and quality of the prevailing guidelines for the lesson plan arrangement were studied as a basis for drafting a prototype of the guidelines for the arrangement of character-based English language lesson plan.As many as 56 English teachers of Junior Secondary Schools in Surakarta city were involved in the research.The results of the research show that (1) the guidelines for the lesson plan arrangement made by the government are designed for all subject matters and are general in nature; (2) the lesson plans arranged by the teachers of Junior Secondary Schools in Surakarta city still contain many weaknesses; and (3) special or specific guidelines for the arrangement of character-based English language lesson plan are required for the teachers of Junior Secondary Schools in Surakarta city.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the views of Islamic Javanese ideas in Sindhunata's poem Air Kata Kata. The Islamic Javanese view is obtained by using the deep interpretation of the symbols in the texts and images/ paintings contained in poems by a Catholic Pastor who has a humanist spirit and is familiar with Islamic Javanese life. Based on this research, the researcher obtained an Islamic Javanese view in Catholic poet?s works who was close to the daily life of Moslems. Therefore, his works are influenced by Islam and the life of Moslems.

Abstract

Conditions and facilities of English language classes in the remote area encourage the negotiation of learning to solve problems. This narrative research aims to reveal strategies of pre-service teachers of the SM3T program in the process of the negotiation of English language learning. The study used diaries and interview transcripts from four teachers from Pidie Jaya and Sumba. The findings showthat teachers use interpersonal (IPS) and instructional (IS) strategies in the negotiation process. In Pidie Jaya, IPS strategies consist of the use of local languages and the help of local people. Meanwhile, IS strategies comprise learning groups and introduction to learning activities. In Sumba, teachers make language adjustment and establish rapport and informal communication as IPS strategies and they carry out buddy teaching and assign homework as IS strategies. This study contributes to the intercultural approach to designing English Language Education programs for remote areas. Keywords: EFL, remote areas, negotiation of learning STRATEGI GURU PRAJABATAN DALAM NEGOSIASI PEMBELAJARAN BAHASA INGGRIS DI DAERAH TERPENCIL Abstrak Kondisi dan fasilitas kelas Bahasa Inggris di daerah terpencil mendorong adanya negosiasi pembelajaran untuk menyelesaikan masalah. Penelitian naratif ini bertujuan untuk mengungkapkan strategi-strategi guru prajabatan program SM3T dalam proses negosiasi pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Studi ini menggunakan diary dan transkrip wawancara milik empat guru dari Pidie Jaya dan Sumba. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru menggunakan strategi Interpersonal (IPS) dan Instruksional (IS) dalam proses negosiasi. Di Pidie Jaya, IPS terdiri dari penggunaan bahasa lokal dan bantuan orang lokal. Sedangkan IS terdiri dari grup belajar dan pengenalan aktivitas-aktivitas pembelajaran. Di Sumba, guru melakukan penyesuaian bahasa dan membangun keakraban dan komunikasi informal sebagai IPS dan melakukan pengajaran dengan teman dan memberikan tugas rumah sebagai IS. Studi ini berkontribusi pada pendekatan antarkultur dalam merancang program Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris untuk daerah terpencil. Kata kunci: EFL, daerah terpencil, negosiasi pembelajaran

Abstract

This research is constituted by the application of teaching early reading literacy impplemented in some schools across ex-residency Madiun. The teaching should implement character based teaching as an introduction into the ability of early reading literacy. That is carried out for various reasons, for example, the demands of the students’ parent, the demands of the furhter school level, commercial reasons, and so forth. This study implemented a combination of research methods. Initiated into content validity analysis or analysis of existing learning contents based on theory of study the effectiveness of learning, then combined with observations and school interviews and literature study,narrowing the findings to lead the new concept for early reading literacy learning. 40 Schools being randomly selected were used in this research in the ex-residency Madiun. These research findings illustrated the true condition about the application of early reading literacy learning in the field. Referring to the findings of questionnaires and interviews, the teaching of early reading literacy was delivered in additional learning program. This made it possible to avoid infringement of the government rules about unpermitted learning at that level. Besides, those were found the lack of some language components that allows the imperfectness of introduction and readiness of children to acquaint the language. Furthermore, it lacked involvement of children playing environment both at home and at school for learning outcome optimality. Finally those findings were used as a reference to create an integrated learning tools in the children’s playground in the form of teachers and parents’ guide.Keyword: Reading, Young learner preschool, Playing, and Environment.

Abstract

The golden age is an important period when children receive a wide range of knowledge. It takes place between two years of age to six.  The initial process of early literacy starts also here in which several components state meaningful supports; vocabulary, print knowledge, phonological awareness, emergent reading, and arts. Three previous studies for this article show that the integration between learning at home and at school for the supports is not yet integrated. Based on the research results that are relevant to this study, it was found that children whose parent were optimizing the chance of receiving a stimulus language well, will grow into adults who are capable in terms of language as well as having a tendency to more easily understand the readings five times greater than adults who in his childhood did not receive the same stimuli. The general objective of this study was to find the concept of activity-based meaningful language activities either through sub reading, storytelling, dialogue, as well as arts of toddlers. The specific objective of this study was to: Discover how the existing conditions in similar processes and guidelines that are applied in other countries as a comparison; Finding the design and guidelines for teacher and parent  in facilitating emergent  reading and arts;  Finding the effectiveness  of  on-going  literacy learning activities. Mix methods applied here took 40 teachers and 40 parents lived in Madiun and surroundings. The first questionnaire and observation for both participants showed what real emergent and arts activities for their children and also whether those acts were standardized or not. The second part was sharing the program and figuring the guidelines which lead them act as the target shared. And the last one was the evaluation which promoted observation, interviews and documents from the progress.

Abstract

Dalam dunia pendidikan, bahasa indonesia memiliki peran dalam menjaga keutuhan serta persatuan bangsa Indonesia. Pembelajaran sastra yaitu mengapresiasi dongeng adalah salah satu kompetensi yang harus dikuasai seseorang, dengan mengapresiasi estetika puitik dan unsur pembangun lainnya dapat dijadikan sebagai upaya mengoptimalisasikan pendidikan karakter bangsa. Dalam hal ini pendidik harus memberikan penguatan supaya karakter bangsa tidak luntur, terutama dalam menghadapi Masyarakat Ekonomi Asean yang menjadi tantangan dan sekaligus peluang bagi masyarakat Indonesia. Dampak penerapan Masyarakat Ekonomi Asean tidak hanya pada sektor perdagangan tapi juga semua sektor, maka dari itu semua sektor harus siap untuk menghadapi penerapan ini. Salah satu apek yang perlu disiapkan adalah karakter bangsa yang berkualitas sehingga memiliki karakter yang mampu menjadikannya bersaing dalam era Masyarakat Ekonomi Asean.Kata kunci: Apresiasi Dongeng, Pendidikan Karakter, Masyarakat Ekonomi Asean.

Abstract

Penelitian ini didasari oleh penerapan pengajaran membaca permulaan yang diteraapkan di beberapa sekolah se eks karesidenan Madiun. Pengajaran tersebut menerapkan pengajaran yang seharusnya berkarakter sebagai pengenalan menuju kemampuan membaca permulaan. Hal tersebut dilakukan dengan berbagai alasan. Misalnya, tuntutan orangtua/wali siswa, tuntutan jenjang sekolah selanjutnya, alasan komersial, dan lain sebagainya. Penelitian ini akan menerapkan metode penelitian gabungan. Diawali dengan content validity analysis atau analisa muatan pembelajaran yang telah ada berdasarkan kajian teori efektifitas pembelajaran, kemudian digabungkan dengan observasi dan wawancara sekolah serta Kajian Kepustakaan, mengerucutkan temuan yang memandu konsep baru bagi pembelajaran membaca permulaan di tingkat ini. Sekolah yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah 40 sekolah di lingkungan eks-karesidenan Madiun yang dipilih secara acak. Hasil temuan penelitian ini menggambarkan kondisi kenyataan penerapan pembelajaran membaca permulaan di lapangan. Pada hasil angket dan wawancara ditemukan bahwa pengajaran membaca permulaan disampaikan dalam program pembelajaran tambahan. Hal ini memungkinkan untuk menghindari pelanggaran dari aturan pemerintah tentang tidak diijinkannya pembelajaran tersebut di tingkat tersebut. Pada hasil wawancara dan observasi ditemukan kurangnya beberapa komponen bahasa yang memungkinkan pengenalan dan kesiapan anak dalam mengenal bahasa menjadi tidak sempurna. Hal lain adalah kurangnya keterlibatan lingkungan bermain anak baik di rumah maupun sekolah yang dilibatkan bagi keoptimalan hasil belajar. Akhirnya temuan-temuan tersebut digunakan sebagai acuan untuk membuat sebuah perangkat pembelajaran terpadu di lingkungan bermain anak dalam bentuk panduan guru dan orangtua.
