Abstract

This is the study of traditional rice planting ritual discourse of the traditional farming community of Bayan, North Lombok in an ethno-pragmatic perspective.  It is specifically aimed at describing the cultural norms and their meaning configurations.  The theory used in the study is the cultural scripts developed by Wierzbicka (2002a) considering that cultural norms constitute rules and regulations in social interaction practices. They can be investigated from the use of grammatical aspects of language and linguistic routines which are context-bound. They can be configured by paraphrasing in simple and mini language using single space. The results of the study showed that there were some cultural norms found on the traditional rice planting ritual discourse of the traditional farming community of Bayan, North Lombok. They included: (1) asserting thought and hope, (2) respecting other entities, (3) apologizing, (4) promising, and (5) giving advice. The configuration of these cultural norms was in accordance with the understanding of local cultural scripts and wisdom in terms of rituals of the local farming system. The configuration is constructed in low-level script with components of ?when? and ?if?. It contains the aspects of thinking, speaking, and doing. It is derived from the semantic primes of both evaluation and perception.

Abstract

The construction of verbs sequence ?konstruksi verba beruntun?, which is hereinafter abbreviated to KVB, in this article is defined as a construction without the existence of any linking word and pausing mark (comma). Based on the theory of typology, as far as the complex predicate is concerned, the only KVB menjuruh+Vitr (intransitive verb) whose grammatical object functioning as the nucleus argument located after V2 (the second verb) and KVB menjuruh+Vtr (transitive verb) which is not marked by the morphological prefix meng- are identified as having the complex predicate construction ?kontruksi predikat kompleks? which is hereinafter abbreviated to KPK. Based on the theory of transformational grammar, the KVB menjuruh, except that identified as KPK, is identified as having the complex clausal construction ?konstruksi klausa kompleks?, which is hereinafter abbreviated to KKK.

Abstract

ABSTRAKStudi ini difokuskan pada deskripsi dan analisis terjemahan beberapa istilah keagamaan Hindu Bali ke dalam Bahasa Inggris. Pembahasan dikhususkan pada penerapan teknik dan ideologi penerjemahan. Lebih lanjut, studi ini juga mengkaji dampak pemilihan teknik dan ideologi penerjemahan terkait terhadap kualitas hasil terjemahan.Data dalam studi ini diambil dari buku berjudul The Invisible Mirror Siwaratri Kalpa: Balinese Literature in Performance? Dan lebih jauh lagi dapat dikatakan penerapan ideologi penerjemahan yang dilakukan berdampak positif bagi kualitas terjemahan yang dihasilkan.ABSTRACTThis study is focused on description and analysis of translation of Balinese Hindu religious terms into English. The discussion is specified on the details of techniques applied and the ideology of translation involved. Further, this study also assesses the impact of translation techniques and ideology applied on the quality of translation product. The data was taken from a book entitled ?The Invisible Mirror Siwaratri Kalpa: Balinese Literature in Performance?Sastra Bali di dalam Seni Pertunjukan? written by Ron Jenkins and I Nyoman Catra. Specifically for this study, the data was taken from the script of Balinese shadow puppet. This study applied documentation method and note-taking technique in collecting the data. Further, this study made use of Interactive Model proposed by Miles and Huberman (1994: 10-12; also in Miles, Huberman and Saldana, 2014) in analyzing the collected data. The theories applied in addressing the problems are based on the categories of cultural terms by Newmark (1988), techniques of translation by Molina and Albir (2002), and ideology of translation by Venuti (1995).Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that the domestication ideology is pre-dominantly adopted. This indicates that in the process of translating the ST, the translation is oriented towards the TT readers. The translation of the terms from Balinese to English entails severe complications since it involves a condition where the languages and the cultures are disparate. The techniques of translation applied that directed dominantly towards TT readers shows that there is a great cultural difference between the SL text and TL text. The techniques and ideology adopted contribute rather positively to the quality of translation.

Abstract

This journal entitled Types of IndonesianReduplication as the Translation Equivalence of English Lexiconsinvestigates the types of Indonesian reduplications and how the English lexicons are translated in Indonesian reduplications. The data of the research is drawn from an English narrative textbook ?The Magic? (Byrne, 2012) and its translation version in Indonesian ?The Magic? (Purwoko, 2012).   This study reveals three types of reduplications with their own distinctive forms and varieties on meaning implications, namely: full reduplication, partial reduplication, and imitative reduplication. Full reduplication consists of four sub-categories, namely: reduplication of simple words, reduplication of complex words, reduplication of bases within a complex word, and reduplication without corresponding single bases.   The results of the research show that meaning is structured and therefore, it can be analyzed and represented into another language. English inflectional and derivational morphology can correspond productively to Indonesian reduplications. A menu of affixes of both English and Indonesian are the corresponding features of the morphological processes and the meaning components involvedin the translation equivalence analysis. The translation equivalence is then established by textual equivalence and formal correspondence or by contextual relations of the contextual meaning and relatable situational features of grammatical functions of the English lexicons into Indonesian reduplications.

Abstract

Abstract The strength of Masuri poems can be identified in various linguistic aspects that emerge the quality of the messages and the beauty of Malay language and literature. His works mostly exhibit the standard Malay that underline communicativeness, familiarity and solidarity. Masuri does not seem to like to manipulate language in terms of grammar and the lexical choice but his poems is not meant to be explicit. The sound parallelism, word choice and syntax constructions are really quite unique stylistic for Masuri works. To interpret the meaning or the message of his poems one should be ready with various knowledge such as Malay culture, Malay people and Singaporean politics.
