Abstract

Coral is one of marine organisms that can accumulate heavy metals such as Pb in its skeleton. The purpose of this study was to determine the concentration of heavy metals Pb in growth bands of coral P. lutea at windward and leeward regions of Tunda Island. The results showed that P. lutea accumulated heavy metals Pb in their growth bands. The results of Pb concentrations in windward region were in range of 6.17-14.76 mg kg-1/year, with the average concentration rate of 9.69 mg kg-1/year.  Meanwhile, in leeward region, the Pb concentrations were in range of 8.37-17.66 mg kg-1/year whith the average concentration rate of 13.33 mg kg-1/year. Abstract

Teluk Jakarta merupakan kawasan padat dengan berbagai aktivitas sehingga menjadi tempat berkumpulnya polutan dari daratan yang ditransport melalui 13 sungai yang mengalir di wilayah DKI Jakarta. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menjelaskan proses dan sumber logam berat melalui perbandingan profil sebaran logam berat terlarut dan terendapkan pada bulan September di Perairan Teluk Jakarta. Penelitian logam berat terlarut dan terendapkan di perairan Teluk Jakarta telah dilakukan pada bulan September 2014. Analisis logam berat terlarut dan sedimen mengikuti prosedur (APHA 2012). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan kondisi fisika-kimia perairan Teluk Jakarta untuk suhu berkisar 28,9-30,2 ºC, salinitas berkisar 29,5-30,6 psu, derajat keasaman (pH) berkisar 7,80-8,17 dan partikel tersuspensi (TSS) berkisar 25-68 mg/l. Logam berat terlarut untuk Pb berkisar 0,006-0,016 ppm, Cd berkisar 0,001-0,003 ppm, Cu berkisar 0,001-0,005 ppm, Ni berkisar 0,001-0,016 ppm dan Zn berkisar 0,003-0,097 ppm. Logam berat sedimen untuk Pb berkisar 24,86-59,32 ppm, Cd berkisar 0,32-3,49 ppm, Cu berkisar 11,42-67 ppm, Ni berkisar 19,80-39,85 ppm dan Zn berkisar 26,14,8-241,01 ppm. Sebaran logam berat terlarut yang diperkuat dengan sebaran logam berat dalam sedimen mengindikasikan sumber logam berat di perairan Teluk Jakarta sebagian besar berasal dari input materi dari daratan.

Abstract

Heavy metal pollution is one of serious problem for tropical mangrove ecosystem. Heavy metals can  decrease the quality of a waters. The decreasing in water quality can caused by pollutants such as heavy metals with high concentrations greatly affects the aquatic environment, especially living organisms. The aimed of study is to determine the accumulation level of heavy metals such as Al, Cu, Pb, As, Ni, Cr, Ti, Mn, dan Fe, in root, leaves and  stem of E. acoroides. The sampling was carried out in the northern and southern parts of Tunda Island, in March 2015. The method used for seagrass destruction is 6 mL 65% HNO3 and mL H2O2 30%, sediment destruction using Milestone Start D microwave labstation. and using ICP-OES (Inductive Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry) Thermo Scientific iCAP 700 Series. The result show that, the Al, was the dominant heavy metals observed both in sea water and sediment surrounding the observed sea grass areas. Similar result was also observed for seagrass.  The dominant sediment grain size absorbing heavy metals is silt-clay because it has more organic matter to control the binding of heavy metals. Heavy metal bioaccumulation is predominant in seagrass leaves and stems due to heavy metal entry into seagrass, substance storage tissue, and seagrass characteristics that are completely submerged in water. Seagrass meadow ecosystem in Tunda Island has been contaminated by several heavy metals.

Abstract

Laut Sulawesi merupakan salah satu jalur penting perlintasan Arus Lintas Indonesia (Arlindo) yang memiliki energi pasang surut internal yang kuat. Arus pasang surut tinggi yang berinteraksi dengan topografi yang kasar akan menciptakan gelombang internal yang kuat. Disipasi dari pasang surut internal akan menyebabkan terjadinya percampuran yang akan memberikan efek penting untuk sistem perubahan iklim dan sumber daya laut. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengkuantifikasi dinamika dan energetik gelombang internal di Laut Sulawesi dengan pendekatan pemodelan laut tiga dimensi NEMO. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa gelombang internal dibangkitkan pada daerah Kepulauan Sulu dan Sangihe-Talaud dengan nilai konversi energi lebih dari 10-3Wm-2 dan berpropagasi masuk ke area basin Laut Sulawesi. Disipasi energi yang terjadi pada pusat pembangkitan berkisar 10,8 GW dan berpopagasi pada area dekat pusat pembangkitan dan area basin Laut Sulawesi. Sekitar 25% (5 GW) didisipasi terjadi dekat pusat pembangkitan, peningkatan disipasi energi baroklinik terjadi pada saat gelombang internal berpopagasi menjauhi daerah pusat pembangkitan dengan nilai yang bervariasi antara 1,4 sampai 4,8 GW. Daerah dengan jarak 36 km sampai 54 km terjadi penurunan disipasi energi baroklinik, signal yang kuat dari Kepulaun Sangihe-Talaud berangsur menurun pada saat propagasi dari 10-2sampai 10-3W/m2.

Abstract

The presence of cohesive sediment in the water column can reduce light penetration and affect photosynthesis process, and it can be disrupted the primary productivity of aquatic, and sedimentation of coastal waters. The objective of this research was to determine the cohesive sediment distribution pattern and the relationship with sedimentation. MIKE 3 FM modeling was used to understand the process of sediment transport and sedimentation on Inner Ambon Bay. Sediment transport modeling method was divided into two stages: the hydrodynamic modeling (baroclinic) and sediment transport (mud transport) modeling. The model results indicate current patterns in the Inner Ambon Bay is influenced by the tidal factor. Suspended sediment dispersed vertically from the surface to a depth of 30 m with concentration of about 3.5-15 Kg/m3. The maximum consentration of the suspended sediment occurs at head of the bay (around Waiheru, Passo, and Lateri). Model simulations for 30 days showed the rate of erosion is about 1.04-6.15 Kg/m2/s, while in Inner Ambon Bay the erosion about 9.07x10-8Kg/m2/s only occurred in T1 station. Sedimentation associated with the cohesive sediment accumulation and it was shown by bed level. In addition, the simulation showed bed level in sill ranged at 0.01-0.19 cm and 0.47 mm/day on average, while in the Inner Ambon Bay it ranged from 1.75-10.01 cm, and the sedimentation rate was approximately 39.9 mm/day.

Abstract

Characteristic of population biology of the ?sepetang? clam has been studied inDumai mangrove ecosystem from November 2010 to October 2011. This researchwas to study the patterns of the population growth, mortality and recruitment ofthe clam P. acutidens. Sampling was monthlyfrom plot 1 m x 1 m quadratictransects. The result showed that growth pattern of P. acutidens was negativeallometric with asymptotic length (L?) 92.71 mm.The annual growth coefficient(K) and total mortalitywere 0.59 and 1.87 per year, respectively. The naturalmortality was probably related to environmental condition. The recruitmentoccurred every month, the peaks occurred on April (15.93%) and August(13.16%).

Abstract

Akumulasi sedimen di perairan Laut Jawa terjadi cukup cepat karena banyaknya masukan material sedimen dari wilayah sekitar. Sejauh ini belum ada penelitian yang memberikan estimasi laju akumulasi di bagian tengah Laut Jawa dengan menggunakan Pb-210 sebagai tracer. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menghitung estimasi laju akumulasi sedimen Laut Jawa dengan menggunakan profil unsupported Pb-210. Sedimen core diambil dari dua lokasi di perairan Laut Jawa (bagian barat dan timur) menggunakan multicore pada saat cruise kapal riset Geomarin 3, MAJAFLOX 2015, Pusat Penelitian dan Pengembangan Geologi Kelautan (P3GL), Bandung. Diperoleh panjang sedimen core untuk bagian barat dan timur berturut-turut adalah 35 cm dan 37 cm. Contoh sedimen dipotong dengan interval yaitu 2 cm pada kisaran kedalaman (0-10 cm), 4 cm (kedalaman 10-22 cm) dan 6 cm (kedalaman >22 cm). Analisis aktivitas Pb-210 dilakukan menggunakan detektor Passiveted Implanted Planar Silicon (PIPS) Alpha Spektrometer. Model Constant Rate of Supply (CRS) digunakan untuk menghitung laju akumulasi dan umur sedimen. Hasil menunjukkan laju akumulasi sedimen di bagian barat bervariasi antara 0,002-0,014 kg/m2/th dalam kurun waktu tahun 126 tahun dan di bagian timur bervariasi antara 0,002-0,020 kg/m2/thdalam kurun waktu 128 tahun. Laju akumulasi sedimen mulai mengalami peningkatan pada tahun 1950 dengan laju 0,005 kg/m2/thhingga saat ini mencapai 0,020 kg/m2/th.

Abstract

The pollutant quantity of heavy metals entering water environment does not give complete answer toward the generated effect and risk, however it needs thoroughly study related to the pollutant dynamic. The aim of this research was to investigate the fate of Pb and Zn in water, such as: distribution, behavior, and reactivity (case study: Jeneberang Estuary, Makassar). Pb and Zn concentrations were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). The distribution of dissolved Pb and Zn showed a pattern that the lowest concentration was in the fresh water (the river zone), whereas the highest concentration was in the salt water (the marine zone). The distribution pattern of particulate Pb and Zn showed that the highest concentration was in the fresh water (the river zone) and the salt water (the marine zone), whereas the lowest concentration was in the estuary zone. The behavior of dissolved Pb and Zn tended to increase the concentration (desorption) along the increased salinity gradient. The residual fraction was the dominant component of geochemical fractions in the sediment that indicated the sources of Pb and Zn mainly derived from a natural process and the reactivity was low in the water. Keywords: distribution, behavior, reactivity, lead, zinc, pollution

Abstract

Toxicity of ammonia was evaluated using amphipod Grandidierella bonnieroides to describe its role as confounding factor in sediment quality assessment. Ammonia is a toxic compound that is found naturally in seawater and sediment. High ammonia content in the pore water sediment can be potentially toxic to benthic biota, so that it will interfere with the results of sediment toxicity tests. Laboratory production amphipod was used in this ammonia toxicity test. Water-only toxicity tests was conducted to produce new toxicity data of ammonia, and is expressed as LC50, LOEC and NOEC for benthic amphipod G.bonnieroides. The study resulted the 96-h median lethal concentration (LC50) of ammonia for G. bonnioerides was 65.5 mg.L-1. While the value LOEC (low observed effect concentration) is 56 mg.L-1 and NOEC value (no observed effect concentration) was 32 mg.L-1 . This shows that ammonia has a relatively low toxicity to amphipod and ammonia does not act as a confounding factor in the sediment toxicity test, because the ammonia content in sediment does not pose any significant effect on amphipod survival. It can be concluded that the amphipod has a potential useful as test organism in sediment bioassay for assessing the quality of marine sediment. Moreover, the high dependence of total ammonia toxicity indicates that it is necessary to measure the total ammonia and pH of the medium when testing environmental samples. Amonia merupakan senyawa beracun yang ditemukan secara alami dalam air laut dan sedimen. Kandungan amonia yang tinggi dalam air pori sedimen dapat berpotensi racun bagi biota bentik, sehingga akan mengganggu hasil uji toksisitas sedimen. Amphipod hasil produksi laboratorium digunakan dalam uji amonia. Uji toksisitas dilakukan untuk menghasilkan data toksisitas baru ammonia, dan dinyatakan sebagai LC50, LOEC dan NOEC untuk G.bonnieroides amphipod bentik. Studi ini menghasilkan nilai konsentrasi median letal 96-jam (LC50) ammonia untuk G. bonnioerides adalah 65.5 mg.L-1. Sedangkan nilai LOEC (konsentrasi terendah yang menyebabkan dampak secara signifikan) adalah 56 mg.L-1 dan nilai NOEC (konsentrasi tertinggi yang tidah menyebabkan dampak secara signifikan) 32 mg.L-1. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa ammonia memiliki toksisitas relatif rendah untuk amphipod dan ammonia tidak bertindak sebagai pengganggu dalam untuk uji toksisitas sedimen, karena kandungan ammonia dalam sedimen tidak menimbulkan pengaruh yang nyata pada survival amphipod. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa amphipod memiliki potensi sebagai biota uji dalam sedimen bioassay untuk menilai kualitas sedimen laut. Selain itu, terdapat ketergantungan yang tinggi toksisitas amoniak terhadap pH, sehingga perlu untuk memantau total amonia dan pH saat melakukan pengujian sampel lingkungan. Abstract

Fish is one of the protein sources for humans which its existence is susceptible to the contamination, one of which is the heavy metal. The lack of information regarding the content of heavy metal in the edible fish in South Sumatera makes this study important to be done. This study was aimed to analyze the concentration of heavy metal in two species of edible fishes at Musi River Estuary site. The study was conducted in the estuary section of Musi River from September to November 2014. The heavy metals of Cu and Pb in the water and in the fish organs were analyzed using AAS with a type of SpektrA A-20 Variant Plus using a mixture of Air-Acetylene flame. The result showed the variation of Cu and Pb concentrations in each of species and three organs observed. The concentration of Cu and Pb in the liver was higher than in the gills and the muscle (liver>gills>muscle). The concentration of Cu and Pb in the muscle of all fish species were not exceed the safe limit for consumption. Keywords: Cu and Pb, consumed fish, Musi River estuary
