Abstract

This paper deals with the socio-political roles of jawara in Banten as both traditional and modern leaders during the New Order period 1966-1998. This paper shows that Banten is not only an area of piety, but also an area of tradition and violence in different forms. In the colonial period, jawara mounted resistance—along with ulama—aimed at overthrowing not only existing political regimes but also the socio-cultural order as it then existed. During the New Order, this development was altered with the cooptation of both ulama and jawara by Golkar. By envolving to the state and adjusting to the new atmosphere of the political situation, jawara and ulama created new positions where they gradually expanded their power, status and wealth. Throughout the Suharto’s power, they demonstrated the patron-client relationships with the government.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper explores the dynamics of socio-religious interactions among the inter-ethnic fishermen community in the former seaport of the Sultanate of Banten, i.e. in the Karangantu Port, Serang, Banten. The study focuses on the socio-religious interactions between migrants and local residents, and among the migrants themselves. This paper more broadly investigates the government?s policies on marine and fisheries sectors since 2000. Main issues discussed are the background of the history of Banten as the center of maritime power; the arrival and interaction between foreign and Nusantara traders and fishermen and local people; decentralization policies; patterns and forms of the inter-ethnic interactions; and the influence of decentral-ization policies towards the development of Banten?s maritime world. This paper uses ethnographical and historical approaches. The author argues that the inter-ethnic interactions in the Banten north coast area are socio-economic-cultural interactions that have long been intertwined and can be regarded as ideal multiculturalism interactions on the one hand. However, the policies of the central and regional government in marine and fisheries sectors have not generated the right solution to improve and empower Banten?s fishermen community, as it did occur in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Abstract

This paper deals with the historical roots and identities, nature and characteristics of local strongmen groups in Indonesia, and aspects of violence in Indonesia. In the rural colonial Java, there were rampok-bandits and jago groups; whereas today in Banten there are jawara groups and elsewhere in Indonesia people commonly recognized preman groups. In this paper I will focus on these four groups: rampok-bandits (or bandits), jago, jawara, and preman. These groups are parts of the long-established strongmen groups that have characterized Indonesian history. Among the questions addressed are: what is the origin and what are the characteristics of local strongmen groups in society? How does violence embody in the way of life of local strongmen groups? What is their position in society? How do they characterize local cultures in their place of origin? Keywords: Rampok-bandits, Jago, Jawara, Preman, Violence

Abstract

Abstract

This paper explores the relationship between Islam and local culture in Indonesia in the framework of democratization and decentralization. It specifically focuses on the dispute between Islamic Defenders Front’s (the FPI) leader, Habib Rizieq and the Regent of Purwakarta, Dedi Mulyadi together with the West Java Siliwangi Youth Wing (AMS). This paper shows that local leaders in decentralizing and democratizing Indonesia have involved in the turbulent political arenas, and this process in turn helps shape the contours of the country’s political situation. This paper also shows that the on-going processes of decentralization and democratization have allowed for the emergence of new seemingly-autonomous local leaders, such as Dedi Mulyadi and Habib Rizieq. This paper argues that the rise of more overt expressions of Islamic piety and cultural resilience has shaped and characterized the identity politics of certain influential people’s leaders.
