Abstract

Abstract

The growth and development of the body goes through two phases of rapid growth. First phase (0-5 years) and second phase (10-17 years). This study aimed to compare anthropometry and physical abilities between trained and untrained individuals in the second rapid growth phase (adolescence). This research method used analytic observational with cross sectional design. The sample study used adolescents aged 14 years old, consisted of trained adolescent groups (n=25) and untrained adolescent groups (n=32), with categorized throught the International Physical Activity Questionnaires (IPAQ). Each group measured height, weight, chest circumference, vital lung capacity (VC), oxygen saturation (SpO2), heart rate resting, heart rate exercise, and VO2Max. The results of the different test between trained and untrained groups with a significance level of p<0.05 showed there were significant differences in body height (p=0.000), VC (p=0.000), SpO2 (p=0,001), heart rate rest (p=0.000), and VO2Max (p=0.000). There were no significant differences in body weight (p=0.053), chest circumference (p=0.226), and heart rate exercise (p=0.242). As a conclusion, anthropometry and physical abilities of trained individuals was greater than the untrained individuals in the second rapid growth phase (adolescence).

Abstract

Background:Low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is a prognostic factor for hemodialysis mortality through atherosclerosis mechanism. Vitamin C and E have been well known as anti-oxidants that reduced LDL cholesterol. However, there were no studies have been done to address the effectiveness of vitamin C, E, and its combination on lowering LDL in patients with hemodialysis. This study aimed to determine the effect of vitamin C, E, and C and E combination on LDL cholesterol. Methods:A randomized controlled trial was conducted in 64 patients receiving hemodialysis at RSUD Dr.Moewardi(RSDM) Surakarta. The sample was taken at random and then divided into 4 groups: placebo, vitamin C (500 mg), vitamin E (400 mg), and vitamin C + E combination. The treatment lasted for 30 days. LDL cholesterol before and after treatment were analyzed at the Clinical Pathology division, RSDM. The reduction in LDL cholesterol before and after treatment was analyzed using One Way Anovaand (pair-wise) Post-Hoc Test. Results:One Way Anovashowed statistically significant reduction in LDL cholesterol between groups (p<0.001). Post hoc testshowed that vitamin C, vitamin E, or its combination reduced LDL cholesterol more than the placebo (p<0.001). Vitamin C and E administered in combination led to statistically significant lower LDL cholesterol than administered alone (p=0.002). There was no statistically difference in LDL cholesterol level between those provided with vitamin C and vitamin E. Conclusion: Vitamin C and E, individually or in combination, reduces LDL cholesterol. The highest reduction was achieved by vitamin C and E combination. Keywords: vitamin C, vitamin E, LDL cholesterol

Abstract

Nationalism is a given cultural reality which keeps changing its meaning through out our history. Such changing is partly due to a manipulative exercise by the rulers, partly through socialization of the so called national history. Societal conflict and tention emerged in many part of Indonesia recently has been due to unfinished transformations, yet pursuing the manipulative path of nationalization of nationalism lead us to absurdity of our collective identity. Reconstructing Indonesian historiography is an imperative, whithin which local history should have a fair treatment.

Abstract

Moewardi/Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta periode Juli 2009–2010. Hewan uji berupa 18 ekor mencit Balb/C jantan yang dibagi menjadi tiga kelompok. Kelompok I tanpa diberi perlakuan (kontrol negatif), kelompok II adalah mencit model sepsis yang diinokulasi dengan lipopolisakarida (LPS)-E.coli (0,4 mg/mencit/i.p.), dan kelompok III adalah mencit model sepsis yang diinokulasi dengan LPS-E.coli serta diberi probiotik. Kadar IgA serum diperiksa dengan menggunakan ELISA. Data dianalisis secara statistik dengan one way ANOVA. Kadar IgA serum pada kelompok mencit normal 35,82±4,55 ng/mL. Pemaparan LPS-E.coli menurunkan kadar IgA serum menjadi 6,20±5,80 ng/mL. Pemberian probiotik pada mencit model sepsis, mampu meningkatkan kadar IgA serum menjadi 65,07±34,97 ng/mL. Probiotik secara bermakna meningkatkan kadar IgA serum dibandingkan dengan kelompok mencit sepsis (65,07±34,97 ng/mL vs 6,20±5,80 ng/mL, p=0,000). Simpulan, pemberian probiotik meningkatkan kadar IgA serum pada mencit model sepsis. [MKB. 2010;42(4):175–80].Kata kunci: IgA, probiotik, sepsisThe Effect of Probiotic on IgA Level in Mice Model of SepsisProbiotic is useful as immunomodulator and imunonutrition in patients with critical illness such as sepsis, but the mechanism is not entirely clear. This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of probiotic on serum IgA level in mice model of sepsis in dr. Moewardi Hospital/Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta period July 2009–2010. Eighteen males Balb/C mice were used and divided into three groups. Group I without treatment (negative control), group II which was mice model of sepsis inoculated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-E.coli (0.4 mg/mouse/ip), and group III was mice model of sepsis inoculated with E. coli LPS-and given probiotic. Serum IgA level was examined by ELISA. Data were analyzed statistically with one-way ANOVA. Serum IgA levels in normal mice group was 35.82±4.55 ng/mL. Exposing LPS-E. coli reduced the levels of serum IgA to 6.20±5.80 ng/mL. Administration of probiotics increased the serum IgA level to 65.07±34.97 ng/mL in mouse models of sepsis. Probiotics significantly increased serum IgA levels compared to mice model of sepsis group (65.07 ± 34.97 ng / mL vs. 6.20 ± 5.80 ng / mL, p = 0.000). In conclusion, administration of probiotics can increase the levels of serum IgA in mice model of sepsis. [MKB. 2010;42(4):175–80]. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15395/mkb.v42n4.33

Abstract

Effect of External Radiotherapy to Cochlear Outer Hair Cells Function on Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma PatientsRadiotherapy is the main treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Exposure to high dose radiotherapy can cause damage to the surrounding tissue structure and hearing loss is one of it. Depraved cochlea is occur due to damaged outer hair cells (OHC) because of degeneration of striae vascularis, spiral ligament, and bacillar membrane atrophy. The purpose of this study was to understand the OHC's function due to radiotherapy in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients. The type of study was observational analytic study with prospective design to determine the influence of radiotherapy to the function of OHC in the department of ENT-HNS Hasan Sadikin General Hospital Bandung and performed from March to September 2007. Pure tone audiometry examination, tympanometry, and otoacoustic emission (OAE) was performed before radiotherapy. Tympanometry and OAE was measured when radiotherapy performed and one month after radiotherapy. McNemar and Z test was performed to calculate the effects of radiotherapy to OHC. In this study 42 ears from 27 subjects that meet the inclusion criteria 18 men and 9 women. The result of this study showed that the prevalence of damaged OHC were 9.6% at 2,000 cGy, 61.5% at 4,000 cGy,81.1% at 6,600 cGy, and 82.8% after one month of radiotherapy. Damaged OHC's function was significance at dose radiation exposure from 4,000 to 6,600 cGy (p<0.001). The conclusion of this study is radiotherapy can alter OHC's function in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15395/mkb.v42n2.12
