Abstract

Indonesia located in the intersection zone of Eurasian Plate, Pacific Ocean Plate and Indo-Australia causing some areas in Indonesia has the potential to experience periodically both earthquakes and tsunami. The education to deal with those circumstances has become a necessity in most parts of Indonesia to build resilience to disaster. This research aims to identify, understand and explain the study of visual content on disaster education media in the strategy of vernacular design. This difference emerges because of the authority of traditional knowledge and the stakeholder of local wisdom which is widely followed by several communities in Indonesian society has different direction in seeing disasters. Educational media that have been developed utilize the spoken culture such as folksongs, folktale or traditional games, but it?s never been evaluated the effectiveness of the media in term of visual communication approach. Technological developments close to the user allow opportunities to take a role in disaster and mitigation education. Educational media for disaster mitigation that has been used to provide understanding to the community has been widely disseminated. It is necessary to explore the formal aesthetics of educational content design on disaster mitigation as a disaster education effort through various possibilities in communication approach through vernacular visual language in disaster education. The research method use ethnography with qualitative descriptive analysis. The results of the research will be used as recommendation to the stakeholders and designers as design guideline that consider the site specific factor of each disaster characteristic.

Abstract

Nowadays, during this intercultural era and global challenge, film can be interpreted as a practical strategy to develop meaning and Indonesian cultural identity. Through many singers of audiovisual creation, film has not only served as entertainment, but can also act as an instrument to reflect local values and traditional perspective through the storytelling that has been presented by film director. This role is a significant point to develop local insight and cultural value as the identity of Indonesian film. Although, at some point, this strategy still becomes a problem in Indonesian film fields. Sang Pencerah film that was directed by Hanung Bramantyo is one of Indonesian films that attempted to deliver local identity in its storytelling. This research is an endeavour to identify Indonesian cultural identity that has been represented through Sang Pencerah film. By applying cultural studies and interdisciplinary as their methods, the researchers acquired some interesting findings. Firstly, aesthetic and thematic elements in the film narrative had a significant relation to traditional and cultural values of Javanese society. Secondly, the meaning of cultural identity also had a linear proportion to spiritual values in life, such as determination, peacefulness, gloriness, tolerance, as well as social understanding. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Sang Pencerah film is a manifestation of Hanung Bramantyo regarding to the meaning of Indonesian culture that is based on Javanese society’s local wisdom.How to Cite: Puspitasari, D. AbstrakBandung memiliki posisi begitu penting dalam perkembangan seni rupa kontemporer Indonesia.Perkembangan yang pesat paska boom tahun 2000an serta peran penting salah satu akademi seni tertua di Indonesia menjadi lahan subur bermunculannya seniman muda dengan karakter yang khas. Karakter yang khas tersebut salah satuya dimiliki oleh Radi Arwinda, seorang seniman yang dibesarkan dari lingkungan keluarga yang begitu tertarik pada kebudayaan tradisi, namun tumbuh dan berkembang di kota urban dengan dipengaruhi oleh kultur populer Jepang dan Amerika lewat film animasi, dan komik. Karya-karya Radi pada perkembangannya merupakan upaya re-interpretasi budaya, mengubah struktur dengan pembacaan personal terhadap fenomena di masyarakat.Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan metodologi kualitatif secara deskriptif dengan menganalisis berbagai macam data literatur serta data hasil wawancara dan observasi yang mendukung penelitian. Penelitian ini juga meminjam pendekatan kritik seni untuk menginterpretasikan karya.(Kata-kata Kunci: Radi Arwinda re-interpretasi budaya tradisi, seni rupa kontemporer, , Bandung)AbstractBandung has a very important position in the development of contemporary art in Indonesia. The rapid development after the boom of the 2000s as well as the important role of one of the oldest art academy in Indonesia to be fertile ground emergence of young artists with a distinctive character. Distinctive character is one of owned by Radi Arwinda, an artist who grew up in the so interested in cultural tradition family environment, but thrive in an urban city with popular Japan and the US culture influenced through animated films and comics. Radi works on the development of an attempt to re-interpretation of the culture, changing the structure of the personal reading of the phenomena in the society. This study uses descriptive qualitative methodological approach to analyzing a wide range of literature data as well as data from interviews and observations to support research. Abstract

AbstrakMajalah merupakan salah satu bentuk media massa telah lahir sejak lama sebagai sarana media informasi dan alat pendidikan bagi masyarakat. Bagi perempuan, informasi dapat diperoleh salah satunya melalui majalah wanita.Majalah Femina adalah salah satu majalah wanita pertama di Indonesia sehingga memiliki pembaca dari beberapa generasi yang berbeda. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk menganalisis visual artikel mode dengan menggunakan analisis semiotika dari awal majalah Femina terbit tahun 1974 hingga 2015 untuk melihat elemen visual dan tanda sebagai representasi perempuan Indonesia melalui artikel mode. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan diakronik dengan pemaparan secara deskriptif melalui studi literature pengumpulan artikel mode.Pendekatan pada penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan semiotika diakronik dengan analisis semiotika.Penelitian ini fokus untuk mendapatkan representasi citra perempuan di Indonesia dengan melalui elemen-elemen visual yang terdapat pada artikel mode, sehingga mengetahuicitra melalui pemahaman mendalam tentang situasi sosial budaya perempuan di Indonesia.Kata Kunci: perempuan, mode, majalah, visual, semiotika.ABSTRACTMagazine is one of mass media that have been born since a long time as a means of information and educational tools for the community. Information can be obtained for women from women’s magazine. Femina magazine is one of the first magazines in Indonesia that have readers from several generations. The aim of this study was to see the visual elements and the sign as representation of Indonesia women from Femina magazine’s visual article mode using semiotic analysis during 1974 to 2015. The method used in this study is a qualitative method diachronic approach with descriptive exposure through the study literature mode article Femina magazine. This research is going to appearance at the representation of the image of women in Indonesia with through visual elements contained in article mode. Thus the visual mode produces an image through a deep understanding of the social and cultural situation of women in Indonesia.Key words: women, mode, magazine, visual, semiotic

Abstract

Kata yang paling banyak mengalami redefinisi sekarang ini adalah seni dan budaya. Seni dan budaya saling keterkaitan, jika seni mengalami perubahan persepsi dan  interpretasi demikian pula sebaliknya. Salah satu penemuan yang menakjubkan di dunia ini adalah ditemukannya fotografi. Dalam ranah seni, fotografi mengalami perdebatan panjang untuk di kategorikan sebagai suatu medium Seni Rupa. Pada era Modernisme, fotografi berfungsi sebagai ‘pelayan’ seniman, sedangkan pada era Postmodernisme seniman sebagai fotografer, dan pada era Seni Kontemporer saat ini, fotografer adalah  seniman. Foto keluarga merupakan artefak dan dokumentasi dari perjalanan sejarah  kehidupan sebuah keluarga dengan segala dinamikanya. Berdasarkan kajian literatur dan  kategori Seni Kontemporer Charlotte Cotton maka foto keluarga termasuk di dalam delapan  kategori tersebut, khususnya pada kategori kelima, “Intimate Life”. Pada abad ke-21 ini, kemajuan teknologi digital mempengaruhi kemajuan kamera  dan teknologi percetakan sehingga menghasilkan suatu budaya digital, yang menghasilkan pergeseran paradigma fotografi dari sakral kearah provan sekaligus banal.Kata kunci: Foto Keluarga, Fotografi, Seni Kontemporer, Modernisme, Postmodernisme

AbstrakPraktek penciptaan karya seni rupa pada dasarnya memiliki regularitas yang didasari oleh common sense (nalar wajar), dalam proses permulaan, produksi hingga apresiasinya. Dalam sejarah Seni Rupa Indonesia, persoalan itu hadir oleh karena suatu prinsip yang disebutnya sebagai prinsip modernism. Modernisasi yang terjadi di Bali melalui pengaruh orang-orang barat dan utamanya perkembangan pariwisata telah menstrukturkan Bali pada identifikasi tentang tempat yang khas dengan budaya kehidupan sehari-hari masyarakatnya, panorama alam serta suasana mistis-eksotis yang selalu menginspirasi.Penelitian ini melihat pemanfaatan identifikasi tentang Bali, melalui imaji-imaji yang terdapat dalam media sosial Instagram,pada praktek penciptaan karya seni rupa dengan menggunakan nalar wajar yang ditawarkan oleh metodologi visual.Pemanfaatan imaji-imaji tentang Bali yang terdapat pada Instagram telah menggeser situs produksi yang akan menimbulkan makna-makna baru, namun tidak menghilangkan makna-makna dan konteks yang sebelumnya melekat padanya.Kata kunci: bali, identitas, imaji, praktek penciptaan, metodologi visualAbstractThe led-practice of art basically have a regularity that is based on the common sense, on the beginning of the process, the production and its appreciation. In the history of Indonesian Arts, this issue is present because of the principle of modernism. Modernization is happening in Bali through the influence of the western and main tourism development that structured Bali on the identification on the images of distinctive culture with unique daily life, natural scenery and mystical-exotic atmosphere that always inspire.This research looked at the use of the identification of Bali, through the images contained in Instagram, the led-practice sensed by visual methodology. The Application of images of Bali contained in Instagram has shifted production sites which will give inflict to new meanings, but it does not eliminate the meanings and contexts that were previously attached to it.Keywords: bali, identity, images, led-practice, visual methodology

Abstract

AbstrakMahluk halus dalam masyarakat Sunda merupakan fenomena antara mitos dan realitas. Kepercayaan terhadap mahluk yang dianggap immateri-spiritual ini mempengaruhi kehidupan masyarakat, dan banyak diangkat dalam media populer. Tahun 1986 hadir komik Sunda berjudul Kawin ka Kunti, bercerita tentang pernikahan manusia dan mahluk halus, Kuntianak. Penelitian ini bersifat kualitatif, secara deskriptif menguraikan tentang pengemasan mitos dan tradisi dalam komik sebagai wujud interteks. Analisis intertekstualitas digunakan dalam penelitian berupaya mencari representasi teks berupa keyakinan akan keberadaan mahluk halus di masyarakat Sunda yang muncul dalam komik. Diperoleh kesimpulan bahwa interteks hadir dalam komik berupa keyakinan akan keberadaan mahluk halus, meliputi wujud hantu, kehadiran mantra berupa jampe pamakena, serta adat istiadat yang berkaitan dengan mahluk halus. Imaji hantu dalam komik ini adalah representasi dari konsep, pandangan, kepercayaan akan kehadiran mahluk halus. Gambarannya bisa jadi merupakan sebuah imaji perseptual, yang hadir dalam diri komikus didasarkan pada referensi eksternal di lingkungan komikus berada. Kata Kunci: Mahluk Halus, Komik, Intertekstual, Sunda, Tradisi AbstractSpiritual beings within Sundanese is both myth and reality phenomenon. This spiritual-immaterial belief influences Sundanese people’s life, where it frequently appears in popular media. In 1986, there was a comic titled Kawin ka Kunti, told a story about spiritual being (Kuntianak)-human marriage.It is a qualitative research which descriptively explains how myth and tradition are wrapped as an intertext form. Uses intertextual analysis, this research attempts to find text representation in form of belief on spiritual beings existence in the comic. It is then concluded that intertext exists in the comic in form of belief on spiritual beings existence comprises of incarnation of several ghosts, spells presence in form of jampe pamakena, as well as custom related to ghosts. Ghost imaging in this comic is a representation of concept, point of view, and belief of jurig (ghost). It may come in form of perceptual imaging, presents in anything that is based on external reference of the comic artist her/himself.Keywords: Jurig (ghost), Comic, Intertextual, Sunda, Tradition

Abstract

Cirebon Batik Pegajahan is the result ofthe creative process, feeling, intention, also long thought of people who have expertise in interpreting the condition of people‘s behavior of Cirebon (palace), which was then adapted into a form of art and culture of batik fabric through a process of creativity of the craftsmen. This Batik Pegajahan grows and develops within the community of (palace) Cirebon, including: Kasepuhan Palace, Kanoman, Kacirebonan, and Keprabonan.This study will explain the symbolic narrative contained in Pegajahan Cirebon batik decoration. The discussion is based on the systematic symbolic visual elements of the Pegajahan batik decoration which is based on the teachings ofthe Tarekat Syattariyah attitudes and behavior of (palace) Cirebon society, form of local wisdom that is reflected in the symbolic-aesthetic elements.The research used descriptive—analytic method and ethnography, in describing the symbolic narrative found in Batik Pegajahan Cirebon, The results are in the form ofvisual data complete with symbolic narratives in Batik Pegajahan Cirebon, which represents behavior of (palace) Cirebon people significantly; so it can be used as reference for further research in the reconstruction, reproducing, and formulating such ornaments as the basis for designing or guidance for the people of batik (palace) Cirebon in particular.Keywords: Symbolic Narratives, Decoration of Batik Pegajahan and Tarekat Syattariyah

Abstract

RESUME: Di masa lalu, sosok ibu mendapat tempat utama dalam kehidupan manusia, karena ia dianggap sebagai subjek, pemimpin, dewi, sumber kehidupan dan memiliki kekuatan yang besar, serta penempatan posisi-posisi tinggi lainnya. Perbedaan kondisi alam, perubahan sosial, dan dinamika kebudayaan menyebabkan ada perbedaan tipologi, fungsi, dan pemaknaan sosok ibu dari masa ke masa pada tiap-tiap tempat, baik di Timur maupun di Barat, sehingga, muncul pemitosan dan stereotipe tertentu pada sosok ibu. Representasi adalah hal yang sengaja dibuat atau diadakan dengan tujuan untuk mewakili sesuatu, sehingga memiliki karakteristik dari apapun yang diwakilinya itu. Penelitian ini bermaksud untuk mengkaji pengelompokan representasi ibu, perubahan pemitosan, dan seterotip sosok ibu dari masa ke masa dengan menggunakan metode kajian literatur historis. Ibu selalu digambarkan sebagai sosok yang berhubungan dengan alam, kehidupan, dan kesuburan. Pada awalnya, ibu dianggap sebagai satu-satunya sumber kehidupan yang menyatu dengan alam semesta. Kemudian, penggambaran ibu yang agung berubah menjadi bagian yang harus dikuasai dan dikendalikan pada masa Yunani dan Romawi. Meskipun dipresentasikan sebagai dewi yang subur dan melahirkan dewa/keturunan yang hebat (super), ibu digambarkan bukan menjadi kekuatan yang utama. Penggambaran ibu di Timur masih tetap sebagai ibu yang agung, subur, dan memiliki kekuatan yang multidaya. Sedangkan di Indonesia, sosok ibu tetap digambarkan dengan alam, tanah tempat manusia hidup, yang harus dihormati. KATA KUNCI: Ibu, nilai, mitos, representasi, sejarah, dunia Timur dan Barat, Indonesia, kondisi alam, perubahan sosial, dan dinamika kebudayaan. ABSTRACT: “The Myths of Mother Representations from Time to Time”. In the past, mother gained the prominent place in human life, because she was regarded as the subject, the leader, the goddess, the source of life with great power, and other high positions. Differences in natural conditions, changes in social, and cultural dynamics have caused differences in typology, function, and meaning of mother from time to time in each place, both in the East and in the West, so that there is a certain stereotype and myths on mother figure. Representation is something that is deliberately created or held with the aim to represent an item, so that has the characteristics of whatever it represents. This study was intended to examine the grouping of maternal representations, the changes of the stereotypes, and myths of mother figure from time to time by using the method of historical literature review. Mothers have always been portrayed as a figure that is in touch with nature, life, and fertility. At first, the mother was considered as the only source of life that blends with the universe. Then, the glorious depiction of a mother turned into a part that must be mastered and controlled during the Greek and Roman era. Although presented as a goddess of the fertile and gave birth to the gods/great (super) descents, the mother was portrayed not as the major force. The portrayal of mothers in the East is still described as the great mother, fertile, and having multi-powers. While in Indonesia, the mother is still depicted with nature, the land where human life, that must be respected. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Java, where the VOC (Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie or East Hindia-Dutch Company) — later a colonial state — established its base, was undoubtedly one of the most important regions in East Indies, which attracted colonial era of Europeans, not to mention those who relied on visual images, especially in 19th century. It was the age when revolution broke out in Europe and liberal thoughts paved the way for private companies to open business in the colony, resulting various writings and drawings made by Europeans, especially the Dutch and British, on the East Indies, especially Java. This essay discusses three interrelated subjects in the history of European visual representation of Dutch East Indies (the present day Indonesia). Firstly, the attractiveness of East Indies, especially Java, as Dutch colony in Asia, for 19th century European society as could be seen from innumerable pictures and travelogues on the region and world-class exhibitions on the subject, in both the Netherlands and France, which displayed various aspects of the land and people. Secondly, the significance of Priangan, a mountainous region in western part of Java, in the eyes of 19th century European, who traveled and conducted scientific investigations in the region so that the mountain region became a subject of various images and narratives. Thirdly, the role of Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn (1809-1864), probably the most important researcher and explorer of Java at the time, in the production of visual images and travelogues of the land.KEY WORDS: Dutch East Indies, Java island, Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn, history, Priangan, European society, and visual representation.  About the Authors: H.W.
