Abstract

Abstract: The study aims to investigate how Indonesian authors write their English and Indonesian research article (RA) discussion sections. There were 7 Indonesian authors who write 1 English research article and 1 Indonesian research article published in national accredited journals. The study executed rhetorical moves designed by Swales (1990) to be used here as the instrument. In general, the findings show that 7 Indonesian authors operate not too different rhetorical patterns of English and Indonesian RA discussion sections viewed from moves occurrences, completeness, and order of the move structures. Nearly all 7 Indonesian authors show 5 moves in the English RA discussion section consisting of statement of the results-(un)expected outcome-reference to previous research-explanation-deduction and hypothesis. They use 6 moves in the Indonesian RA discussion section consisting of statement of the results-(un)expected outcome-reference to previous research-explanation-exemplification-deduction and hypothesis. However, each author has his/her specific move structure seen from the moves order and moves frequency. The specific uses of move structure are explained with examples in the forms of sentences or phrases. Thus, the authors are in the position of having their rhetorical patterns suited the context and communities. Keywords: Indonesian authors, research articles (RA), discussion sections, rhetorical patterns PILIHAN POLA RETORIKA PENULIS INDONESIA DALAM MENULIS BAGIAN PEMBAHASAN ARTIKEL PENELITIAN BERBAHASA INGGRIS DAN BERBAHASA INDONESIA Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti bagaimana penulis Indonesia menulis bagian pembahasan artikel penelitian berbahasa Inggris dan berbahasa Indonesia. Sebagian besar penulis memilih 5 moves pada bagian pembahasan yang berbahasa Inggris, yaitu statement of the results-(un)expected outcome-reference to previous research-explanation-deduction and hypothesis. Bagian pembahasan yang berbahasa Indonesia memiliki 6 moves, yaitu statement of the results-(un)expected outcome-reference to previous research-explanation-exemplification-deduction and hypothesis.

Abstract

Abstract: Implementing Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) is one way to develop language teaching practices. Finding out how MALL is implemented by English teachers could provide insights to the future of MALL. Three high school English teachers were chosen as the subjects of the study representing three degrees of implementation?high, medium and low. It was revealed that the teachers recognized the potentials and practices of mobile devices for language learning. However, their familiarity with MALL does not automatically make them able or willing to employ MALL. Their application is limited in the range of mobile applications and learning activities.Key Words: degree of implementation, MALLAbstrak: Menerapkan Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) merupakan sebuah cara untuk mengembangkan praktik pengajaran bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed at researching how YouTube Tutorial Videos can improve students? speaking skill in performing procedure text. It employs Collaborative Action Research adapting Kemmis and Taggart design, which covers 1) planning, 2) implementing, 3) observing, 4) reflecting. Result of the study showed that the students? speaking skill was improving in three aspects 1) accuracy, 2) fluency, 3) performance. However, it was revealed that native English speaker (NES) videos are not helpful for the students, especially the low-level student. Non-native English speaker (NNES) videos were more helpful for the students because they tend to speak slower with clearer articulation.Key Words: youtube tutorial videos, speaking, procedure textAbstrak: Penelitian bertujuan mengetahui bagaimana video tutorial YouTube dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa dalam menampilkan teks prosedur.

Abstract

This study was conducted to find out the profile of exemplary English teachers at secondary schools. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and questionnaires. The study was conducted in four towns, covering exemplary teachers in one senior high school and three junior high schools. The subjects were exemplary in terms of their active participation in the Teachers Forum (MGMP), and their roles in the professional development of both themselves and their colleagues. This study was done mainly to find out (1) the professional competences of the exemplary teachers in each town and (2) how they achieve the competences. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively by the usual process of sorting, coding, and analyzing. The findings reveal that the subjects in three of the four towns have all the four competences (subject matter, pedagogical, social and personal competences), with the personal competence being the most influential in shaping them as professional and exemplary teachers.  From the findings a profile of the professional competences of the exemplary English teachers at secondary schools is developed. Keywords:      professional competence, exemplary teacher, profile.

Abstract

Written corrective feedback (WCF) in L2 writing classrooms has gained considerable attention in applied linguistics research over the past twenty years. WCF may take different forms of teacher?s responses to errors in students? texts, among others Coded-Correction Feedback (CCF) and Non-Coded Correction Feedback (NCCF). A number of research studies on the effectiveness of various types of corrective feedback have been undertaken; however the effect of CCF and NCCF on the quality of students? writing in Indonesian context has not yet been explored. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of Coded Correction Feedback and Non-Coded Correction Feedback on senior high school students? writing quality. This study investigated the effect of Coded-Correction Feedback (CCF) and Non-Coded Correction Feedback (NCCF) on the quality of Indonesian EFL students? writing. It involved 53 senior high school students of 11th Grade. Each student was exposed to two different treatments (CCF and NCCF) and the students? writing quality, after receiving each type of treatments or WCF, was then measured. The effect of each feedback was estimated by comparing the individual students? scores in writing composition after receiving CCF with their scores after receiving NCCF. The result of this study revealed that the quality of the students? writing with CCF was better than that with NCCF. The findings of this study showed that the quality of the students? writing receiving CCF was better than that receiving NCCF because CCF promotes awareness with noticing as well as understanding. Hence, the use of CCF can be considered more effective than NCCF.  Therefore, it is suggested that CCF be employed in giving corrective feedback to the students? compositions to improve the quality of their writing, and that teachers employ CCF when giving WCF to improve the quality of students? writing.

Abstract

This study explores the effect of working memory capacity (WMC) and content familiarity (CF) on EFL reading comprehension. Seventy senior students from a private university in Malang, Indonesia, were involved in the study, having been selected based on their English proficiency of at least pre-advanced level. These students were required to complete a reading span test for the WMC and a multiple-choice reading test based on CF. The findings of this study show that there is no interaction effect between WMC as the main independent variable and CF as the moderator variable; this implies that the students with higher WMC comprehend texts better than those with lower WMC, regardless of whether they are familiar or not with the texts.
