Abstract

ABSTRACT This research focused on analyzing flouting of maxims that were flouted by the characters in the Se7en movie script and the motivation of the characters flouted the maxims. This research used qualitative research method. The data of the research were in the form of utterances that contained flouting of maxim. The data were collected by downloading the movie and the script, watching the movie, and collecting the data from the script. The data analysis was conducted by organizing the data into narration, analyzing the data, and drawing the conclusion. The results of the research showed what types of maxim were flouted in the movie and what motivation that led the characters to flout the maxims. There are four flouting of maxims in the Se7en movie script; they are maxim of quantity maxim of quality, maxim of relevance, and maxim of manner. Then, there are three motivations that influenced the characters flouted the maxims; they are competitive, collaborative, and conflictive.                                          Keywords: flouting of maxim, Se7en movie  ABSTRAK Penelitian ini difokuskan pada analisis pelanggaran maksim yang dilakukan oleh karakter dalam naskah film Se7en dan motivasi karakter melanggar maksim tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif. Data penelitian berupa ujaran yang mengandung pelanggaran maksim. Data dikumpulkan dengan cara mengunduh film dan naskahnya, menonton film, dan mengumpulkan data dari naskah. Analisis data dilakukan dengan menyusun data dalam bentuk narasi, menganalisis data, dan menarik kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan jenis maksim apa saja yang dilanggar dalam film ini dan motivasi apa yang menyebabkan karakter tersebut melanggarnya. Ada empat maksim yang dilanggar dalam naskah film Se7en, yaitu maxim kuantitas, maksim kualitas, maksim relevansi, dan maksim cara. Lalu, ada tiga motivasi yang mempengaruhi karakter melanggar keempat maksim tersebut, yaitu kompetitif, kolaboratif,  dan konfliktif. Kata kunci: pelanggaran maksim, film Se7en

Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing the Hierarchy of Needs manifested in the main character. Two questions were designed to discuss this topic. The first question is about the Needs manifested by the main character in the movie. The second question is about the desire of the main character in fulfilling his Needs. This research used descriptive qualitative method to explain and describe the data carefully in answering the questions. The data in this research were in written form taken from the dialogue and narration of the movie. This research uses Maslow’s theory. it is appropriate theory to this research. This research examines the elements of the hierarchy of needs through the main character. Keywords:  Life of Pi, Maslow, hierarchy of need.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research revolve around a movie based on real life experience that show us about the two sides of ideology that clash between each other and the result because of it, learning from history is crucial in order to prevent society to commit the same mistake or experience the same tragedy. Descriptive qualitative approach was used in this research. The research focused on two purposes namely to identify the form of slavery that occur in the movie and the effects of slavery toward the main character Solomon Northup`s mental state during his 12 years enslavement. There are five types of slavery that occurred in the movie which are debt bondage, contract slavery, forced labor, human trafficking, and sexual slavery. Solomon showed six kinds of psychological arousal throughout the entire movie which are anger, disappointment, frustration, hate, sad, and happiness and all those emotions were related to his 12 years of enslavement. Furthermore, cognitive label was used to classify those six psychological arousals into three forms. Those three forms of cognitive label are crying, laughing, and screaming. The psychological arousal happiness belonged to both crying and laughing cognitive label. Psychological arousal anger and disappointment belong to cognitive label screaming. Psychological arousal sad and frustration belong to cognitive label crying. Key words: slavery, human rights  ABSTRAK Penelitian ini mengkaji sebuah film yang diangkat dari kisah nyata. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah agar masyarakat bisa mengenali sejarah dan tidak mengulangi kesalahan yang sama. Pendekatan yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah deskriptif. Penelitian ini memiliki dua tujuan yakni mengidentifikasi bentuk-bentuk perbudakan yang terjadi dalam film dan efek perbudakan terhadap karakter Solomon Northup selama 12 tahun perbudakan yang dialaminya. Ada lima jenis perbudakan yang ditunjukkan di film, yakni perbudakan piutang, perbudakan kontrak, kerja paksa, perdagangan manusia, dan perbudakan seksual. Solomon menunjukkan enam macam dorongan psikologi, yakni amarah, kekecewaan, frustasi, benci, sedih dan bahagia, seluruh emosi itu berkaitan dengan perbudakannya selama 12 tahun. Selanjutnya, label kognitif digunakan untung mengklasifikasi keenam dorongan psikologis tersebut menjadi tiga kategori. Ketiga kategori label kognitif tersebut adalah menangis, tertawa, dan berteriak. Dorongan psikologi bahagia masuk di label kognitif menangis dan tertawa. Dorongan psikologis amarah dan kekecewaan masuk di label kognitif berteriak. Dorongan psikologi sedih dan frustasi masuk di label kognitif menangis. Kata kunci: perbudakan, hak asasi manusia

Abstract

Abstract Language is influenced by social differences that appear in society, such as age, gender, religion, power, economic status, and ethnicity. Those social factors produce different kinds of language which is called as variety. Ethnicity as one of the social factors influences the emergence of variety that comes from African American people who lives in United States of America. The variety is called as African American Vernacular English (AAVE). AAVE is often used in literary works to represent African American ethnicity as occurred in Shrek movie through the character of Donkey.This research focused on analyzing the grammatical characteristics of Donkey’s AAVE utterances and the factors underlying them through descriptive qualitative research. The result of this research showed that Donkey’s AAVE utterances have three AAVE’s grammatical features which are verb phrase, negation, and nominal and all four factors which consist of social class, gender, age, and linguistic environment underlying those grammatical characteristics. AAVE grammatical characteristics that appeared in Donkey’s utterances are Copula/Auxiliary Absence, Invariant be, Subject-Verb-Agreement, Other Verb Phrase Structure, ain’t, multiple negation, ain’t with but, and second person plural y’all. Those grammatical characteristics are influenced by Donkey’s working class status, his male gender, teenage age, and his mood when the utterances were taking place whether he was comfortable or not. AAVE grammatical characteristics indicate that Donkey’s character represents African American ethnicity through his utterances and the factors underlying them show that Donkey’s variety is influenced by the social factors that appear in society.Key words: Language, Sociolinguistics, Ethnicity, AAVE, Shrek Movie AbstrakBahasa dipengaruhi oleh perbedaan sosial yang timbul di masyarakat, seperti umur, gender, agama, kekuasaan, status ekonomi, dan etnis. Faktor-faktor sosial tersebut menghasilkan berbagai tipe dari bahasa yang disebut dengan variasi. Etnis sebagai salah satu sosial faktor tersebut mempengaruhi kemunculan sebuah variasi yang berasal dari orang Afrika Amerika yang tinggal di Amerika. Variasi tersebut dinamakan bahasa Inggris Vernakular Afrika Amerika atau AAVE dalam istilah bahasa Inggris. AAVE sering digunakan di karya sastra untuk merepresentasikan etnis Afrika Amerika seperti yang terjadi di film Shrek melalui karakter Donkey.Penelitian ini berfokus pada analisa karakteristik gramatikal dari ujaran AAVE oleh Donkey dan faktor yang mempengaruhi melalui penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ujaran AAVE Donkey terdiri dari tiga fitur gramatikal, yaitu frasa kata kerja, negasi, dan nominal, dan keempat faktor yang mempengaruhinya, yaitu kelas sosial, gender, umur, dan lingkungan linguistik. Karakteristik gramatikal yang muncul pada ujaran Donkey adalah Ketiadaan Copula/Auxiliary, Invariant be, Subjek-Predikat-Object, Frasa Kata Kerja yang Lain, ain’t, negasi ganda, ain’t dengan but, dan orang kedua jamak y’all. Karakteristik gramatikal tersebut dipengaruhi oleh kelas sosial Donkey yang adalah kelas bawah, gender laki-lakinya, umur remaja, dan suasana hatinya apakah dia merasa nyaman atau tidak ketika sedang berdialog. Karakteristik gramatikal AAVE dalam ujaran Donkey mengindikasikan bahwa karakter Donkey merepresentasikan etnis Afrika Amerika melalui ujarannya dan faktor yang mendasarinya menunjukkan bahwa variasi bahasa Donkey dipengaruhi oleh faktor sosial yang muncul dalam masyarakat. Kata kunci: Bahasa, Sosiolinguistik, Etnis, AAVE, Film Shrek

Abstract

ABSTRACT Politeness is one of important thing in doing conversation to avoid misunderstanding between speaker and hearer during the conversation to make the social interaction running more harmony. The purposes of this research were to find out types of politeness strategies, factors influencing the characters in using politeness strategies and the dominant politeness strategy used by the characters in Finding Neverland movie. The research method in this research was descriptive qualitative research, the theory of politeness strategies by Brown and Levinson (1987) was used to analyze the four types of politeness strategy. The result of this research showed that there were fifty eight utterances represented four politeness strategies used by the characters in Finding Neverland movie. Fourteen utterances represented of bald on record strategy, twenty seven utterances represented of positive politeness strategy, sixteen utterances represented of negative politeness strategy and oneutterance represented bald off record strategy. There are 2 factors influencing the choice of politeness strategies used by the characters in Finding Neverland movie. They are intrinsic payoff and relevant circumstances. Fifty eight utterances categorized as politeness strategies, twenty seven of them belong to positive politeness strategy, so that positive politeness strategy is the most dominantly used by the characters in Finding Neverland movie. Keywords: pragmatics, context, politeness strategies, movie  ABSTRAK Kesantunan merupakan satu hal penting dalam melakukan suatu percakapan untuk menghindari kesalahpaham antara pembicara dan pendengar dalam melakukan percakapan agar interaksi sosial berjalan lebih harmonis. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui tipe - tipe strategy kesantunan, factor - faktor yang mempengaruhi karakter dalam menggunakan strategi kesantunan dan juga strategi kesantunan yang paling dominan digunakan oleh karakter dalam film Finding Neverland. Metode penelitian ini adalah bersifat deskripsi kualiatif dengan menggunakan teori strategi kesantunan oleh Brown dan Levinson (1987) yang digunakan untuk menganalisa tipe strategi kesantunan. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat lima puluh delapan ujaran yang mewakili keempat strategi kesantunan yang digunakan oleh karakter dalam film Finding Neverland. Empat belas ujaran mewakili strategi kesantunan langsung (tanpa basa basi), dua puluh tujuh ujaran mewakili strategi kesantunan positif, enam belas ujaran mewakili strategi kesantunan negatif, dan satu ujaran mewakili strategi kesantunan tak langsung (basa basi). Terdapat dua faktor yang mempengaruhi pemilihan strategi kesantunan yang digunakan oleh karakter dalam film Finding Neverland. Faktor tersebut adalah faktor payoff dan faktor keadaan. Lima puluh delapan ucapan yang dikategorikan kedalam strategi kesantunan, dua puluh tujuh diantaranya merupakan startegi kesantunan positif, oleh karena itu strategi kesantunan positif adalah strategi yang paling dominan digunakan oleh karakter dalam film Finding Neverland. Kata Kunci: pragmatik, konteks, strategi kesantunan, film

Abstract

ABSTRACT The research entitled women’s language features found in female character’s utterances in The Devil Wears Prada Movie, aims to identify the women’s language features based on Lakoff’s theory and also to identify language functions served by women’s language features found in The Devil Wears Prada movie based on Jakobsen’s theory. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method, while for collecting the data were watching the movie several times, reading script movie and underlining female character’s utterances containing the women’s language features. From ten features of women’s language, the researcher found nine features used by the female character in The Devil Wears Prada Movie. They are lexical hedges or fillers (7), tag question (3), rising intonation on declarative (2), empty adjectives (3), precious color term (1), intensifiers (10), super polite form (4), hypercorrect grammar (0), avoidance of strong swear words (3) and emphatic stress (3). Intensifiers are the most frequent women’s language features used by female characters in The Devil Wears Prada movie because they want to emphasize or strengthen their utterances deeply to attract addressee’s attention using intensifiers. Meanwhile, hypercorrect grammar did not occur in this research because the female characters mostly used informal language in their dialogue to shorten the gap among the characters. Then, there are language functions served by women’s language found in female character’s utterances in The Devil Wears Prada movie. They are expressive function, directive function and metalinguistic function. Key words: women’s language, women’s language features, The Devil Wears Prada  ABSTRAK  Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi fitur-fitur bahasa wanita berdasarkan teori Lakoff dan juga untuk mengidentifikasi fungsi bahasa yang disajikan oleh fitur bahasa wanita yang terdapat dalam film The Devil Wears Prada berdasarkan teori Jakobsen. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif, sedangkan untuk mengumpulkan data adalah menonton film, membaca naskah film dan menggari bawahi ucapan karakter perempuan yang mengandung fitur-fitur bahasa wanita. Dari sepuluh fitur bahasa wanita, peneliti menemukan sembilan fitur yang digunakan oleh karakter wanita dalam The Devil Wears Prada Movie, lexical hedges atau filler7), tag question (3), rising intonation on declarative (2), empty adjectives (3), precise color term (1), intensifiers (10), super polite form (4), hypercorrect grammar (0), avoidance of strong swear word (3) dan emphatic stress (3). Intensifiers adalah fitur bahasa wanita yang paling sering digunakan oleh karakter wanita dalam film The Devil Wears Prada karena mereka ingin menekankan atau memperkuat ucapan mereka secara mendalam untuk menarik perhatian penerima dengan menggunakan intensifiers. Sementara itu, tata bahasa hypercorrect tidak terjadi dalam penelitian ini karena karakter wanita kebanyakan menggunakan bahasa informal dalam dialog mereka untuk memperpendek jarak antar karakter. Kemudian, ada fungsi bahasa yang disajikan oleh bahasa wanita yang ditemukan dalam ujaran karakter wanita dalam film The Devil Wears Prada. Abstract

Until recent decades, the effort on diminishing students’ feeling of anxiety and less self-efficacy toward the writing activities in academic writing course still becomes a great concern for the teachers or practitioners of writing skill especially when dealing with students from multilingual society. These students, who learn English as a foreign language, often demonstrate the influence of their first language when composing a writing, even in a simple paragraph. Facing this situation, the teachers are forced to give attention more to students’ grammatical composition, and as a result of this most of the students give excessive attention only to revise the grammatical mistakes. Based on this situation, they develop “mental block” towards writing and have less interest in writing. To deal with this situation, many studies suggest that teachers need to foster students’ motivation since it is as crucial as developing students’ writing skills through practice. Hence, this paper aims to describe the effectiveness of giving journal writing task and providing comments to students’ writing in the task as a simple but useful way to ignite students’ motivation in writing. The object of the research is the students of academic writing course in Faculty of Cultural Studies of Mulawarman University Samarinda. Abstract

Pencemaran lingkungan akibat sampah plastik semakin mengkhawatirkan apabila tidak ada usaha untuk mengatasinya. Masyarakat yang kurang pengetahuan dan berperilaku buruk dalam pengelolaan sampah plastik dapat menimbulkan gangguan kesehatan dan lingkungan. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui hubungan antara tingkat pengetahuan ibu rumah tangga dengan perilaku mengelola sampah plastik. Penelitian dilakukan di Dusun Kedesen, Desa Kradenan, Kecamatan Kaliwungu, Kabupaten Semarang Tahun 2012. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan studi cross sectional, dengan sampel berjumlah 74 orang yang diambil secara secara acak sederhana. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan wawancara terstruktur menggunakan kuesioner. Data dianalisis menggunakan analisis univariat dan analisis bivariat dengan uji statistik Kai Kuadrat (X2). Penelitian menemukan sekitar 56,8% responden berpengetahuan tidak baik dan sekitar 60,8% responden berperilaku tidak baik. Analisis bivariat menunjukan hubungan yang sangat signifikan antara tingkat pengetahuan ibu rumah tangga dengan perilaku mengelola sampah plastik. Ada hubungan yang sangat signifikan antara tingkat pengetahuan ibu rumah tangga dengan perilaku mengelola sampah plastik di Dusun Kedesen, Desa Kradenan, Kecamatan Kaliwungu, Kabupaten Semarang tahun 2012.Pollution caused by plastic increase worrying if there is no attempt to resolve it. Lack of knowledge and poor people?s behavior in the management of plastic waste can cause environmental and health problems. Management of plastic waste can be started from each household who produce plastic waste. The purpose of this study to determine the relationship between the level of housewife?s knowledge with the behavior to manage of plastic waste at Kedesen, Kradenan Village, District Kaliwungu, Semarang in 2012. The study was analytic survey with cross-sectional design. Sample was 74 respondents with simple random sampling. Research tool used was a questionnaire. Analyzed used univariate and bivariate analysis with statistical test Chi Square(X2). The results showed 74 respondents obtained from 42 respondents (56.8%) are not well knowledgeable, 32 respondents (43.2%) both knowledgeable. There were 45 respondents (60.8%) did not have good behavior, while 29 respondents (39.2%) had good behavior. Bivariate analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between the level of knowledge with behavior of housewives in managing plastic waste at the hamlet Kedesen. Statistical results showed the value (p = 0.000) smaller than alpha (a = 0.05). There was a significant relationship between the level of knowledge with behavior of housewife in managing plastic waste at Kedesen Hamlet, Village Kradenan, Kaliwungudistrict, Semarang regency in 2012.

Abstract

Theory of Everything?s Movie was analyzed in this study because it was based on a true story and also lots of lessons in life would be found in it. To support the analysis of the main character?s utterance in this movie, the writer used the theory of language disorder by Vasic. This study aimed to find the type of aphasia experienced by Stephen and how aphasia influence Stephen?s life. The method used by the writer is descriptive qualitative. The data of this study were analyzed by using Vasic?s theory about language disorder and the influence of aphasia by Windsor. In the process of analyzing all of those data, the writer had some procedures that include watching the movie several times, reading the movie script, then analyzing Stephen?s utterances related to aphasia. The result of this study showed that Broca?s aphasia and Wernicke?s aphasia occurred. Stephen has a brain injury in the left hemisphere. So, Stephen has a problem with his speech. Stephen was not able to speak clearly because of the disease, but his intelligence is still well. Aphasia changed Stephen?s life a lot. He cannot move as usual so that, he just sits on his electric wheelchair. Also, Aphasia makes people underestimate him. Aphasia makes Stephen difficult to speak so that, Stephen experienced communication disorder. The writer hoped that this research could help the next researcher to continue the analysis from the same movie with another theory of the linguistic case. The writer wished this research will enrich knowledge about language disorder especially aphasia. Film Theory of Everything dianalisis dalam penelitian ini karena didasarkan pada kisah nyata dan banyak pelajaran dalam kehidupan akan ditemukan di dalamnya. Untuk mendukung analisis ucapan karakter utama dalam film ini, penulis menggunakan teori gangguan bahasa oleh Vasic. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan jenis afasia yang dialami oleh Stephen dan bagaimana afasia mempengaruhi kehidupan Stephen. Metode yang digunakan oleh penulis adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Data penelitian ini dianalisis dengan menggunakan teori Vasic tentang gangguan bahasa dan pengaruh afasia oleh Windsor. Dalam proses menganalisis semua data itu, penulis memiliki beberapa prosedur yang meliputi menonton film beberapa kali, membaca skrip film, kemudian menganalisis ucapan Stephen terkait dengan afasia. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa afasia broca dan afasia wernicke terjadi. Stephen mengalami cedera otak di belahan kiri. Jadi, Stephen punya masalah dengan pidatonya. Stephen tidak dapat berbicara dengan jelas karena penyakitnya, tetapi kecerdasannya masih baik. Aphasia banyak mengubah kehidupan Stephen. Dia tidak bisa bergerak seperti biasa sehingga, dia hanya duduk di kursi roda listriknya. Juga, Afasia membuat orang meremehkannya. Aphasia membuat Stephen sulit berbicara sehingga, Stephen mengalami gangguan komunikasi. Penulis berharap penelitian ini dapat membantu peneliti selanjutnya untuk melanjutkan analisis dari film yang sama dengan teori kasus linguistik lainnya. Penulis berharap penelitian ini akan memperkaya pengetahuan tentang gangguan bahasa terutama afasia

Abstract

ABSTRACT The study of emotion is interesting and unique to be understood and discussed. Moreover, analysis about emotion in the novel is challenging because it cannot be analyzed by facial expression of the character but based on the narration and the dialogue of the character. The purposes of this study are to analyze the secondary emotions and the factors that cause it toward Clotilde Destange?s Character in The Blonde Lady novel by Maurice LeBlanc. Ten Houten?s present theory from Plutchik about secondary emotion was suitable to be used as the theory to identify the secondary emotions that are appears in the Clotilde?s Character and the theory from Plutchik about emotion as a chain of event to examine the factors that cause secondary emotion of Clotilde?s character. The qualitative method was used to analyze the novel. This research uses sentences, pages, narration, dialogues, and paragraph that related to the secondary emotion in The Blonde Lady novels. The results of the study show that the secondary emotion appeared in the main female character. The study also was identified that the factors that cause the secondary emotion of Clotilde?s character is come from the stimulus event which followed by cognition, feeling states, overt behavior. Stimulus event in here act as the actor who has a role to start the emotion process going. Moreover, the stimulus event did not only come from the main female character itself but also came from other main characters which affected the main female character in expressing her secondary emotion. Keywords: emotion, secondary emotion ABSTRAK Penelitian mengenai emosi itu menarik dan unik untuk dipahami dan dibahas. Selain itu, analisis mengenai emosi didalam novel itu sangat menantang karena emosi  tidak bisa dianalisa dengan ekspresi wajah karakter namun berdasarkan dari narasi dan dialog dari karakter. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisa mengenai  emosi sekunder dan faktor penyebabnya terhadap karakter Clotilde Destange di dalam novel, The Blonde Lady oleh Maurice LeBlanc. Teori baru TenHouten dari Plutchik tentang emosi sekunder cocok untuk digunakan sebagai teori untuk mengidentifikasi emosi sekunder yang muncul dalam karakter Clotilde dan teori dari Plutchik tentang emosi sebagai rangkaian peristiwa untuk memeriksa faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan emosi sekunder dari karakter Clotilde. Metode kualitatif digunakan untuk menganalisis novel. Penelitian ini menggunakan kalimat, halaman, narasi, dialog, dan paragraf yang terkait dengan emosi sekunder dalam novel The Blonde Lady. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa emosi sekunder muncul pada karakter wanita utama. Penelitian ini juga mengidentifikasi bahwa faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan emosi sekunder karakter Clotilde berasal dari peristiwa stimulus yang diikuti oleh kognisi, keadaan perasaan, perilaku terbuka. Peristiwa stimulus di sini bertindak sebagai aktor yang memiliki peran untuk memulai proses emosi. Selain itu, peristiwa stimulus tidak hanya berasal dari karakter utama wanita itu sendiri tetapi juga berasal dari karakter utama lainnya yang mempengaruhi karakter utama wanita dalam mengekspresikan emosinya. Kata kunci: emosi, emosi sekunder
