Abstract

Background: Disorders resulting from iodine deficiency and anemia will decrease learning achievement among elementary school children. Iodine deficiency has negative impacts on the growth of nervous cells that, in turn, influence their intelligence and learning ability. Also, the anemia condition will cause difficulties in logic and analogous thinking and decrease of concentration to study that have a negative impact in the form of declined learning achievement among the students.Objectives: To examine relationship between status of iodine deficiency disorder and learning achievement of elementary school children, examine relationship between status of anemia and learning achievement of elementary school children, and examine relationship between status of iodine deficiency disorder and status of anemia among the elementary children in Dairi District North Sumatra.Methods: This was an observational study using a cross-sectional design. The study population was all elementary school children in Dairi District and selected samples were 247 individuals. These samples were selected using multistage sampling design, where subjects were randomly selected. Data were processed with univariate analysis and statistical test was a bivariate using chi square test to find out relationship between status of iodine deficiency disorder and learning achievement among the elementary school children, relationship between status of anemia and learning achievement among elementary school children, and relationship between status of iodine deficiency disorder and status of anemia among the elementary school children. The entire data were processed with a computer.Results: The study indicated that there was relationship between status of iodine deficiency disorder and learning achievement among the elementary school children (p=0.000. There was also relationship between status of anemia and learning achievement among the elementary school children (p=0.001, OR=2.365), but there was no relationship between status of iodine deficiency disorder and status of anemia among the elementary school children (p=0.749).Conclusion: There were significant relationship between status of iodine deficiency disorder and status of anemia and learning achievement of elementary school children (p=0.001).

Abstract

Background: Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) is a nutrition problem in Indonesia, particularly endemic in Gunungkidul District. Contribution of goitrogenic food to IDD is not known yet in the population.Objectives: To identify the relationship between consumption pattern of pregnant mothers, especially intake of iodine, goitrogenic, and protein, and urine iodine level.Methods: This was an observational study which used a cross sectional design with both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Subjects of the study were pregnant mothers with gestational period between 13 to 24 weeks. Data consisted of characteristics of pregnant mothers, consumption pattern, and urine iodine level. Survey of consumption used food frequency questionnaire method. Data were descriptively and analytically processed using chi square and multiple regression test.Results: There was a relationship between iodine intake and urine iodine excretion. Pregnant mothers with low iodine intake had a risk 6,7 times higher to low iodine excretion

Abstract

EFEK PEMANFAATAN PROGRAM PEMANTAUAN DAN PROMOSI PERTUMBUHAN TERHADAP STATUS GIZI BALITA DI KOTA CIREBONLia Nurcahyani 1, Mohammad Hakimi 2, Toto Sudargo 3ABSTRACT Background: Undernourishment is the main cause of mortality in underfives, one of which is the lack of growth monitoring and promotion program utilization. Cases of undernourishment at Cirebon Municipality exceed the provincial and national figures. In 2008, community participation in growth monitoring and promotion program increased 19% from the previous year, however cases of undernourishment also increased 0.23%.Objective: To study the effect of growth monitoring and promotion program utilization toward nutritional status of underfive.Method: The study was observational with retrospective cohort design. Subject consisted of 246 underfives of 17-59 months and mothers that met inclusion and exclusion criteria. Sampling used three stage combined with purposive and random sampling technique. Data consisted of primary and secondary data obtained from questionnaire, growth chart, nutrition registry, monthly report of underfive weighing at Cirebon Municipality in 2008, digital scale, measurement board/microtoise and 2006 is WHO anthropometric software. Data analysis used univariate, bivariate with chi square, and multivariate with logistic regression. The study was supported with qualitative data obtained from observation and indepth interview with 6 cadres and 2 nutrition staff to identify input and process indicators and constraints in the utilization of growth monitoring and promotion program.Result and Discussion: The utilization of growth monitoring and promotion program affected nutritional status of underfive significantly p<0,05. Incidence of undernourished underfives that did not utilize the program regularly was 2.7 times greater than in those utilizing the program regularly after considering the contribution of knowledge and attitude of mothers and age of underfives. Input indicator especially role of cadres in the process of growth monitoring and promotion program at Cirebon Municipality was not optimum. Constraints in program utilization consisted of individual (health reason), provider (social reason) and community (geographical reason).Conclusion: Monthly growth monitoring should be prioritized on underfives for the first 24 month. Target of growth monitoring and promotion program could be achieved when there is comprehensive support from people that received the service, service providers and policy makers.Keywords:  nutritional status, underfives, growth monitoring, promotion program, program utilization ABSTRAK Latar Belakang: Kurang gizi adalah penyebab utama mortalitas balita, salah satunya karena kurangnya penggunaan pemantau pertumbuhan dan promosi program. Kasus kurang gizi di Kotamadya Cirebon melebih angka provinsi dan nasional. Di tahun 2008, partisipasi masyarakat dalam pemantauan pertumbuhan dan program promosi meningkat 19% dibanding tahun sebelumnya, namun kasus kurang gizi tetap meningkat 0,23%.Tujuan: Untuk meneliti efek pemanfaatan pemantauan pertumbuhan dan program promosi terhadap status gizi balita.Metode: Penelitian ini merupakan studi observasional dengan rancangan retrospective cohort. Subyek terdiri dari 246 balita usia 17-59 bulan dan ibu yang memenuhi kriteria inklusi dan eksklusi. Sampling memakai tiga tahap dikombinasikan dengan teknik sampling purposif dan acak. Data berasal dari data primer kuesioner dan sekunder, grafik pertumbuhan, register gizi, laporan bulanan berat badan balita di Kotamadya Cirebon tahun 2008, timbangan berat badan, papan pengukur/microtoise dan WHO anthropometric software 2006. Analisis data memakai univariat, bivariat dan multivariat dengan regresi logistik. Penelitian ini juga didukung data kualitatif dari hasil observasi dan wawancara mendalam dengan 6 kader dan 2 staf gizi untuk mengidentifikasi indikator input dan proses serta hambatan dalam penggunaan pemantau pertumbuhan dan program promosi.Hasil dan Pembahasan: Penggunaan pemantau pertumbuhan dan program promosi mempengaruhi status gizi balita secara signifikan p<0,05. Insidensi kurang gizi balita yang tidak memanfaatkan program secara reguler 2,7 kali lebih tinggi dibanding yang memanfaatkan. Kemungkinan kontribusi pengetahuan dan sikap ibu serta usia balita juga mempengaruhi. Indikator input terutama peran kader dalam proses pemantauan pertumbuhan dan program promosi di Kotamadya Cirebon belum optimal. Hambatan penggunaan meliputi faktor individu (alasan kesehatan), petugas kesehatan (alasan sosial) dan komunitas (alasan geografis).Kesimpulan: Pemantauan pertumbuhan balita bulanan harus diprioritaskan untuk 24 bulan pertama. Abstract

The research aimed to investigate the association of nutritional status, blood lead level, and risk factors of hypertension and diabetes mellitus in female traffic police officers routinely exposed to lead in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Fifty-four female traffic police officers aged 20-50 year old participated in this cross-sectional study. As risk factors of diabetes and hypertension, Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated from height and weight data while percentage of body fat (%BF) was measured using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). Energy intake (EI) was assessed using 1x24-hour dietary recall. Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) method was conducted to measure blood lead (Pb-S). Blood pressure (BP) was measured using mercury sphygmomanometer while blood glucose (Glu) was measured in laboratory. Pearson’s and Spearman Rank correlation test were performed for statistical analysis. We demonstrated that Pb-S was positively correlated with both systolic and diastolic BP but not with BMI, %BF, and Glu. Meanwhile, there was a correlation between Glu and either BMI or %BF but not EI. Therefore, our study indicates that exposure to lead is correlated with hypertension while nutritional status is more correlated with diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Background: Food service success relates to patient plate waste. Patient plate waste in Indonesia Hospitals could be more than 25%. Cause of patient plate waste in Hospital is lack of food and equipment quality. Almost of 32.8% patients in 10 hospitals model in Indonesia clarify that appearance, cleanliness, and equipment are good.Objective: The aim of theses research was to identify the effect of serving utensils and the other factors to the plate waste.Methods: This was a Quasi Experiment study using pre posttest with control. Study subject consisted of 45 patients in the treatment group and 45 patients in the control group. Data were analyzed descriptively and whereas t-test, Fisher Exact test, Chi-Square were performed to differentiate the proportions and means in two groups. The effect of several variables on plate waste was calculated using logistic regression on analysis.Results: This study showed that no significant difference of taste, appearance, attitude of the staff who serve meals, service timeliness, kind of food, kind of diseases and environment to patient plate waste (p>0.05). There was no significant effected of the serving disposable utensils on patient plate waste (p>0.05).Conclusion: The type of serving disposable utensils was no a significant factor effected the plate waste.

Abstract

Background: As health professionals, nutritionists are supposed to have good body image, although nutritionists may be overweight or obese. Body image of nutritionists will determine the quality of nutrition service particularly in giving evidence and assurance to the clients. As nutritionist-to-be, nutrition students are expected to have good knowledge and appearance because these will reflect quality of nutritionists in the future.Objective: To identify perception of students of health nutrition study program of the Faculty of Medicine about body image of nutritionists.Method: The study used qualitative descriptive method and case study design. It was carried out in Yogyakarta from October to December 2008. Subject of the study were 23 undergraduate students of Health Nutrition Study Program of Gadjah Mada University of both class A and B. Data were obtained through focus group discussion and in-depth interview. Data validity and reliability used source and method triangulation to 7 lectures of health nutrition Gadjah Mada University.Results: Body image was someone’s physical appearance as viewed by one or others and the effect of mass media in the assessment of body image was relatively significant. Body image of nutritionists was important because it would affect trust of the clients and success in counseling. Nutritionists had responsibility in giving an exemplary healthy life to the community either in physical image or appearance so that nutritionists were supposed to have ideal body posture and good body performance.Conclusion: Good body image for nutritionists would determine quality of counseling and trust of the clients. Nutritionists had responsibility to give an exemplary healthy life to the community. Therefore it was necessary to do monitoring and socialization from the academics as well as related institutions such as association of nutritionists about body image of nutritionists and nutrition students from now on and in the future.

Abstract

Background: Statistic showed an increasing number of overweight incidences among children in Aceh Province. However, relationship between breastfeeding and risk of overweight and obesity is still controversial due to strong confounding factors. Hence, the relationship between breastfeeding and obesity is unclear. To reduce the confounding factors, siblings analysis can be undertaken as children live in the same environment.Objective: To investigate the influence of siblings overweight status on breastfeeding duration and overweight incidence among adolescents and to explore other environmental and genetic factors related to overweight incidence in adolescents.Method: This was an observational-analytical study with a matched case control design. There were 50 subjects for each group. Subjects in the case group were taken from existing cases, while the control group was selected by purposive sampling by matching in age and gender. Paired t test, McNemar test and conditional logistic regression were performed to analyse the data.Results: Overweight adolescents have shorter breastfeeding duration than non-overweight adolescents. Multiple conditional logistic regression tests on overweight status in siblings showed that breastfeeding duration could reduce overweight incidence among adolescents (OR=0.81; 95%CI:0.69-0.96).Conclusion: Overweight adolescents have shorter duration of breastfeeding than those who were not overweight. Factors that affect the risk of overweight among adolescents in this study were mother’s education, adolescent’s eating behavior, mother’s overweight status and sibling’s overweight status.

Abstract

Background: Adolescent is an important period to be considered because it is a transition period between children and adult. Nutrition problem in an adolescent is while the decline of physical activity, teenage generally have a big appetite, hence, they often look for additional food. The majority of diet that teenage like are an energy dense, sweet, and high-fat foods, which could have a risk of causing overweight and obesity if consumed excessively. Therefore, one of the efforts to overcome the nutrition problem is given a health education to teenage.Objective: To seek for the effect of health education by short message service (SMS) and a booklet about obesity on knowledge and body mass index (BMI) in an overweight and obese adolescent.Method: This study used a quasi-experiment with pre-test and post-test design. The subject were 105 respondents of overweight and obese senior high school students. The data were analyze used a paired t-test and ANOVA with p=0.05 and CI=95%.Results: Health education by SMS, booklet and the combination of SMS and booklet had a significant effect statistically (p<0.05) on knowledge in an overweight and obese adolescent. The combination of SMS and booklet had a significant effect statistically on BMI. The result of ANOVA in knowledge variable showed that combination of SMS and booklet group is more effective than other groups. Whereas health education of BMI variable by SMS, booklet, and the combination of SMS and booklet were not effective (p>0.05) to reduce BMI in an overweight and obese adolescent.Conclusion: Health education by SMS, booklet, and combination of SMS and booklet have an effect on increasing the knowledge in overweight and obese adolescent, whereas on BMI, only SMS and booklet have an effect on reducing BMI.

Abstract

Background: Food poisoning occurrence in Indonesia is increasingly growing. Studies also show that nosocomial infection of digestive tract happens in some hospitals because of bacteria transmission. Lack of knowledge, attitude and skills of food handlers about food safety will lead to high risk of disease occurrence cause by food. To prevent such on occurrence, training on food safety for food handlers at hospitals should be held.Objective: To know knowledge, attitude, and practice of food handlers trained on food safety at nutrition installation of Harapan Kita Heart Cardiovascular Hospital..Methods: The study was a quasi-experiment which used pre test-posttest times series design. Subject of the study were 40 food handlers out of 73 total population. Each subject was trained on food safety and observed 3 times (prior to training, 1 month and 2 months after training). Data were analyzed using SPSS for windows version 10.0.Results: After training on food safety given for 5 days there was significant increase of knowledge, attitude and skill of food handlers with p=0.00 (p<0.05) at the period before up to 1 month after training and at the period before up to 2 months after training, but at the period of 1 month up to 2 months there was significant decrease with p=0.00 (p<0.05). Respondent characteristics consisting of age education and length of work did not have significant relationship (p>0.05) with knowledge, attitude and skills of food handlers.Conclusion: There was increase of knowledge, attitude and skill of food handlers before and after 1 month of training.
