Abstract

Biological and molecular variability among PStV (peanut stripe virus) strains isolated from various peanut growing areas in Indonesia was studied based on their pathogenicity and coat protein genes. Six strains of PStV causing different types of symptoms on peanut leaves were used to study biological and molecular variability among these strains. Biological variability of the PStV strains was evaluated based on their pathogenicity on peanut cultivars, Gajah and Landak. While analysis of the coat protein gene was used to study the molecular variability of PStV strains. Based on their pathogenicity, six PStV strains could be grouped into three groups, medium, strong, and very strong strains. Analysis of a coat protein gene showed the variability of the PStV strains were 0-2.1percent based on nucleotide sequence and 0-1.4percent based on predicted amino acid sequence. There was no correlation between biological and molecular variability.

Abstract

Tungro is one of the important diseases in rice plants caused by two types of viruses were rod virus (rice tungro bacilliform virus) and spherical virus (rice tungro spherical virus) that was transmitted by the green leafhopper (GLH) Nephotettix virescens. The purpose of this study to determine the adaptation of new improved varieties against GLH and tungro disease in Merauke, Papua Province. Research conducted at Tanah Miring District, Merauke, Papua Province between February and June 2010. The study was a randomized block design with three replications. The treatment consisted of 11 varieties, namely Inpari 1, Inpari 2, Inpari 3, Inpari 4, Inpari 5 Merawu, Inpari 6 Jete, Inpari 7 Lanrang, Inpari 8, Inpari 9 Elo, Inpari 10 Laeya, and Ciherang. Observations included the intensity of tungro and GLH population density at the age of rice plants of 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks after planting (WAP). In addition, it was observed also the yield components of rice. The results showed that the GLH population density and the intensity of tungro disease was not significantly different at the 11 varieties tested. GLH attack had been found in 1 WAP with an average population density of 4.18 individual/20 single swing. GLH increases with the age of the rice crop with an average population density in 2 WAP (20 individual), 3 WAP (103.27 individual), and 4 WAP (154.15 individual) per 20 single swing. Tungro disease intensity in 11 varieties began were found in 3 WAP on average by 0.16% and increased at 4 WAP on average by 0.28%. Varieties significant effect on yield components such as plant height, panicle length, number of total grain/panicle, percentage of filled grain, 1000 grain weight and productivity except the number of panicles/clump.

Abstract

Students, particularly in senior high school often state that they like instructors who employ active learning strategies to get students engaged with the class topic. Sometimes, large teaching classes are difficult to get students to participate in classroom activities and assess whether they are truly learning or not. It is why providing a game is an appropriate way to create a fun and interactive engagement for students to learn and comprehend the information. “The value of games as a vehicle for teaching concepts while inspiring students is now well accepted at almost all levels of education” Becker  (2001). Kahoot is known as a technology-based instructional tool, it is a popular eLearning tool that easily can be used to add vitality, student engagement, and meta-cognitive supports with limited instructor or student training required. This study aims to analyze the use of Kahoot in engaging students’ active response in learning English. This is a classroom action research. Descriptive analysis is conducted to gain the students action and response during teaching and learning processes proposed by Kemmis and McTaggart in Hopkins (2008). The subjects of this study are twelve grade students of SMAN 1 Serawai, Kabupaten Sintang.

Abstract

This study examines the antioxidant activity of crude phlorotannins from the brown algae Sargassum hystrix v. buxifolium (Chauvin) J. Agardh, through the inhibition of a lipid peroxidation reaction that is induced by the UV radiation. The antioxidant activity during the UV exposure was investigated using the laser-based photoacoustic method for the detection of the ethylene as indicator for lipid peroxidation. This involves an experiment that isolated crude phlorotannins from the ethyl acetate fraction of the Sargassum hystrix methanol extract, hereafter referred to as PFSH. It results in the antioxidant activity as a potent lipid peroxidation inhibitor. Statistically, such antioxidant activity is not significantly different than the commercial antioxidant, which is vitamin C (p > 0.05). The amount of the total phlorotannins, using the Folin-Ciocalteu method, was measured to be approximately 0.13% w/w. In addition, it is found that PFSH contains phlorotannins with low molecular weight (MW) (

Abstract

Effectiveness of In Vitro Inhibitor Effects of Botanical Pesticides on Growth of Some Pepper Seed Born Pathogens ColoniesABSTRACT. Recently, the use of bio-pesticides significantly increases to control some plant diseases due to the drawback of chemical pesticides to environment. Some experiment have been done to evaluate the effectiveness of some vegetable oil as bio-pesticides to inhibit the colony growth of pepper seed born pathogens in vitro. Various concentrations of vegetable oil were added onto potato dextrose agar medium (PDA), afterward, the growth of pathogen colony in treatment was compared to control (medium without vegetable oil). Evaluation was done in certain period time depend on the growth of every pathogen colony Among the vegetable soil tested, clove oil and Andropogon nardus oil showed a very high inhibitory effect to colony growth of P. capsici, C. capsici, F. oxyporum, R solani, and S. rolfsii. Concentration 0.01% of those oil already inhibited the colony growth of all pathogens more than 75%, with the exception of A. nardus oil which required 0.03% to inhibit C. capsici colony. Concentration of clove and A. nardus oil above 0.01% completely inhibited growth of all pathogens colonies, except for F. oxyporum. Meanwhile, others vegetable oil like Curcuma xanthorrhiza, Kaempferia galangal, Kaempferia pandurata, and Curcuma domestica oil have a low inhibitory effect on growth of all pathogens colonies. To get inhibitory effect more than 75% on the growth of colonies, those vegetable oil needed concentration higher than 0.02%. However, K. galangal and C. domestica required 0.02% oil concentration for P. capsici and S. rolfsii, respectively.
