Abstract

Background: Meningitis defined as an inflammation of the meninges, a membrane that surrounds the brain. The inflammation is a result from bacterial infection. Central nervous system infection is a medical emergency because of the progressivity and potentially life-threatening. Antibiotics usage become crucial to reduce morbidity and mortality. Objective: This study was aimed to assess the use of antibiotics, prescribed for patients with bacterial meningitis in Neurology Department of Dr. Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya from January 2010 until June 2015. Methods: Retrospective study using medical record of inpatients obtained from January 1st 2010 until June 30th 2015. The inclusion criteria were inpatients with bacterial meningitis (diagnosed by physician using CT scan data, lumbal puncture and clinical signs and symptoms) and prescribed with antibiotics. Patients with antibiotics therapy less than 3 days and infection other than bacterials were excluded. Results: From 85 patients, male to female ratio was 1.66. Meningitis appear to be mostly occured in productive age, 39 (45.88%) in 15 - 29 years old and 40 (47.06%) in 30 - 60 years old. Number of antibiotics prescribed were 130 prescriptions, as single and combination therapy. The most prescribed antibiotic was cephalosporins (97 prescriptions), dominated by 2 g twice daily ceftriaxone with 86 (66.15%) from overall prescriptions. Followed by metronidazole and fluoroquinolons,11 (8.46%) and 8 (6.15%) respectively. In addition, there were 26 prescriptions of combination therapy, mostly ceftriaxone and metronidazole. Conclusion: Bacterial meningitis are mostly treated using ceftriaxone which is an appropriate drug of choice.

Abstract

Biofertilizer adalah pupuk yang berasal dari biomassa berbagai mikroorganisme tanah, berfungsi sebagai penyedia hara dalam tanah, sehingga mudah diserap oleh tanaman. Bakteri selulolitik telah banyak dimanfaatkan sebagai salah satu agen biofertilizer. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji aktivitas bakteri selulolitik yang berasal dari tanah perkebunan apel di Kota Batu, Jawa Timur yang berpotensi sebagai biofertilizer didasarkan pada kemampuan selulolitik, fiksasi nitrogen, dan pelarut fosfat. Sampel tanah diambil dari tanah perkebunan apel yang terletak di Dusun Junggo, Desa Tulungrejo, Kecamatan Bumiaji, Kota Batu. Isolasi dilakukan dengan metode serial dilution kemudian ditumbuhkan pada media C-NFMM (Cellulose Nitrogen Free Mineral Media) agar. Uji aktivitas selulolitik isolat bakteri menggunakan pewarnaan Congo red 0,1% yang ditandai dengan terbentuknya zona bening. Uji kuantitatif aktivitas selulolitik dilakukan dengan DNS (dinitrosaly-cylic acid). Uji kemampuan pemfiksasi nitrogen menggunakan media N-Free Semisolid Malate dilanjutkan dengan Visocolor Alpha Ammonium Detection Kit. Deteksi aktivitas pelarut fosfat menggunakan media Pikovskaya agar. Hasil isolasi didapatkan 13 isolat kemudian dilakukan screening hingga didapatkan 3 isolat bakteri yang potensial, yaitu isolat SL4, SL5, dan SL7. Aktivitas selulolitik tertinggi adalah isolat SL4 pada jam ke-24 yaitu sebesar 0,05 ± 0,002 U/ml, sedangkan isolat SL7 pada jam ke-72 sebesar 0,05 ± 0,001 U/ml. Uji potensi sebagai agen biofertilizer berdasarkan kemampuan selulolitik, pemfiksasi nitrogen, dan pelarut fosfat didapatkan 3 isolat potensial yaitu SL4, SL5, dan SL7. Abstract

AbstrakTelah dilakukan penelitian mengenai potensi S. hominis K1A dari susu kerbau Belang Toraja sebagai kandidat probiotik. Tujuan : untuk menganalisis potensi Staphylococcus hominis K1A dari susu Kerbau Belang Toraja sebagai kandidat probiotik. Metode : Staphylococcus hominis K1A diuji aktivitas sebagai kandidat probitik meliputi uji hemolisa agar, uji sensitivitas terhadap antibiotic, uji ketahanan asam dan ketahanan garam empedu secara invitro serta uji aktivitas antimikrobialnya. Hasil: hasil analisa menunjukkan bahwa Staphylococcus hominis K1A bersifat non pathogen, sensitive terhadap antibiotic, mampu bertahan pada kondisi asam dan garam empedu secara invitro, efektif menghambat pertumbuhan EPEC, S. aureus dan S. typhi. Abstract

ABSTRACT Cellulose is a nature biopolymer that mainly derived from plant and it has been application broadly in textile and paper industries. Usage of forest plants to cellulose fiber production continually caused negative impact to environment. Waste of coconut fruit water can be metabolism by some species of Gluconacetobacter (Acetobacter) to produce bacterial cellulose as alternative of plant cellulose. The objective of the research is to study effect of increasing of sucrose and urea concentration to bacterial cellulose productivity in coconut fruit water medium. Starter of microbial culture 10% with 2.2 x 107 cell/mL (90% of bacteria and 10 % of yeast) was inoculated into coconut fruit water medium with variation of sucrose and urea concentration. It was incubated seven days in static culture at room temperature. Productivity of cellulose bacterial highest was 10.849 gram in the medium with 5.0 % sucrose and 0.25 % urea concentration. Key words: Acetobacter, cellulose, sucrose, urea ABSTRAK Selulosa adalah biopolimer alamiah yang sebagian besar diperoleh dari tanaman dan telah diaplikasikan secara luas terutama di industri kertas dan tekstil. Penggunaan tanaman hutan untuk produksi serat selulosa secara kontinyu mengakibatkan dampak negatif pada lingkungan. Limbah air buah kelapa dapat dimetabolisme oleh bakteri anggota Genus Gluconacetobacter (Acetobacter) menghasilkan selulosa bakterial sebagai alternatif bagi selulosa tanaman. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mempelajari pengaruh peningkatan konsentrasi sukrosa dan urea pada produktivitas selulosa bakterial dalam medium air buah kelapa. Starter suspensi mikrobia 10% dengan densitas 2,2 x 107 sel/ml (90% bakteri dan 10 % khamir) diinokulasikan ke medium air buah kelapa 150 mL dengan variasi konsentrasi sukrosa dan urea yang dibiakkan secara statis selama tujuh hari pada suhu ruang. Produktivitas selulosa tertinggi 10,849 gram pada formula medium dengan konsentrasi sukrosa 5 % dan urea 0,25 %. Kata kunci: Acetobacter, selulosa, sukrosa, urea

Abstract

The aging process has led to changes in the body's anatomical and function on the elderly. Joint pain is one of the problems frequently encountered on elderly. Exercise in elderly is one of motion excellent exercise therapy for maintaining health of the elder, including reducing joint pain experienced. This study was aimed to know the effect of exercise with decrease of joint pain in elderly at Kelurahan Komplek Kenjeran, Kecamatan Bulak Surabaya. Design used was quasy experiment. Sample were 20 respondents taken according to inclusion criteria. The samples were divided in two groups, treatment (10 respondents) and control (10 respondets). The independent variable were exercise in elderly and dependent variable was joint pain scale. Data were then analyzed using wilcoxon test and mann-whitney u test with ?? 0,05. Wilcoxon signed rank test results showed p=0.008 for treatment group and p=0.157 for control group. Mann Whitney U test showed (p=0.513). It can be concluded that there were significant relationship between exercise in elderly with improvement joint pain on elderly at Kelurahan Komplek Kenjeran Kec. Bulak Surabaya in February 2014. It recommended for nurses to improve the practice of gymnastics elderly to maintaining the health of elderly. Further research expected to examine other factors that may can improvement effect of joint pain on the elderly

Abstract

Porang (Amorphophallus muelleri Blume) has high economic value in Asia. Porang tuber is high in glucomannan and thus becomes one of the exportable food commodities. Porang plants are susceptible to wilt disease caused by Fusarium sp. Trichoderma sp. has the ability to inhibit the growth of pathogenic fungi such as Fusarium sp. This research aimed to study the potency of Trichoderma sp. in controlling the growth of Fusarium sp. Trichoderma sp. was isolated from the rhizosphere soil in A. muelleri plantation, while Fusarium sp. was isolated from A. muelleri tuber infected by Fusarium. The fungi isolates were identified phylogenetically based on the similarity of Internal Transcribed Spacers (ITS) sequence. Both fungi were antagonistically assessed based on the dual culture method. The antagonistic assay showed that the two isolates of Trichoderma had the potency to inhibit the growth of the two isolates of Fusarium. Trichoderma sp. 2 has higher antagonistic potency than Trichoderma sp. 1. Based on ITS sequence similarity, Trichoderma sp. 1 and Trichoderma sp. 2 were identified as Trichoderma longipale and Trichoderma spirale respectively, while both pathogenic Fusarium were identified as Fusarium oxysporum. Trichoderma spirale therefore could be developed as a biopesticide agent in controlling Fusarium oxysporum.

Abstract

Demam Berdarah Dengue (DBD) masih menjadi masalah bagi kesehatan masyarakat dan merupakan penyakit endemis yang menyebabkan angka kematiannya tinggi hampir di seluruh provinsi di Indonesia.  Pada kurun empat tahun terakhir Jawa Timur memiliki kasus DBD paling tinggi. Ketinggian tempat merupakan faktor yang membatasi penyebaran Aedes aegypti sebagai vektor epidemik penyakit demam berdarah. Salah satu cara yang aman untuk memberantas nyamuk tersebut adalah dengan Bacillus thuringiensis. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mendapatkan isolat dan menguji toksisitas Bacillus thuringiensis yang efektif dalam membunuh larva Aedes aegypti dari beberapa ketinggian tempat di Jawa Timur. Sampel sedimen dan air diambil dari dataran tinggi Blitar dan Bondowoso, dataran sedang di Bangkalan, Ponorogo, Madiun dan Tulungagung serta dataran rendah di Lamongan dan Surabaya. Bacillus thuringiensis diisolasi dengan media selektif. Isolat yang didapatkan diamati karakteristik fenotip (Profil Matching Method), kemudian dilakukan pengujian toksisitas pada larva nyamuk Aedes aegypti instar III. Persentase mortalitas larva dianalisis probit (LC50), ragam (ANOVA) dan uji t (t-test). Dua dari 28 isolat Bacillus thuringiensis yang didapatkan yaitu SK.T dan Mdn I TK2 mampu membunuh larva Aedes aegypti lebih dari 50 %. Isolat Mdn I TK2 pada umur biakan 48 jam dan isolat SK.T pada umur biakan 24 jam pada waktu pendedahan 72 jam secara berturut-turut mampu membunuh larva Aedes aegypti sebesar 100 % dan 68,3 %. Isolat Mdn I TK2 lebih efektif membunuh larva Aedes aegypti dibandingkan isolat SK.T dengan nilai LC50-72jam sebesar 2,17×107 sel/ml.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Fusarium sp. merupakan salah satu patogen tanaman strawberry yang dapat menurunkan hasil panen tanaman inang sekitar 40 %.  Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari potensi Genus Trichoderma dalam mengendalikan Fusarium sp. Trichoderma diisolasi dari tanah rhizosfer tanaman strawberry, sedangkan Fusarium sp. diisolasi dari tanaman strawberry yang mengalami layu Fusarium. Isolat kapang dimurnikan, dikarakterisasi dan dibandingkan dengan isolat kapang acuan. Uji Antagonis dilakukan secara in vitro dan in vivo. Uji in vitro dilakukan dengan metode dual culture dan slide culture. Hasil penelitian didapatkan dua jenis kapang antagonis yang mirip dengan Genus Trichoderma dan dua jenis kapang patogen yang mirip dengan Genus Fusarium. Isolat antagonis yang diperoleh adalah Trichoderma sp.1 dan Trichoderma sp. 2, serta isolat patogen Fusarium sp. 1 dan Fusarium sp. 2. Isolat Trichoderma sp. 1 memiliki kemampuan antagonisme lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan isolat Trichoderma sp. 2. Isolat Trichoderma sp. 1 mampu menghambat pertumbuhan Fusarium sp. 1 dan Fusarium sp. 2 secara berturut-turut 49,7 % dan 49,6 %. Isolat Trichoderma sp. 2 mampu menghambat pertumbuhan Fusarium sp. 1 dan Fusarium sp. 2 secara berturut-turut 45,8 % dan 43,4 %. Mekanisme antagonis yang terjadi antara kapang antagonis dan patogen pada uji in vitro yaitu pembelitan dan intervensi hifa. Perlakuan paling optimal pada uji in vivo adalah Trichoderma yang diinokulasi terlebih dahulu yang dilanjutkan dengan penginokulasian Fusarium dengan nilai intensitas serangan sebesar 41,72 % pada varietas Santung sedangkan varietas California yang relatif lebih rentan terhadap serangan patogen.   Kata Kunci : antagonisme, Fusarium sp., strawberry, dan Trichoderma sp.

Abstract

Twenty-four intestinal amoebiasis patients have been treated with a new amoebicid tiberal (Roche) or metronidazole as a control in a dosage of 15- 30 mg/kg body weight per day for 5 consecutive days. The results show that both drugs achieve a 100% cure rate. No side effects or signs of drug toxicity as evaluated from the results of the safety tests were observed. No signs of clinical or parasitological relapses were seen (after discharge. In comparison with the previous trial with a lower dosage (7~ - 15 mg.) and longer course (7 days) the results were even better, e.g. clinical improvement and parasitological disappearance were achieved in a shorter time.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Efficacy of mung bean sprouts as natural fertility enhancer for men was not widely investigated and published. The objective of  this  study  is  to  investigate  the effect of mung bean sprout?s  juice on male Swiss mice spermatozoa quality and spermatogenesis.  An  experimental  study  performed  with randomized  matched  two-group  post  test  only  design  approach.  Thirtymale  mice  were  dividedinto fivegroups randomly, which consist of a control group (CMC25mL/kg BW/day); d-?-tocopherol group (556 IU/kg BW/day) and three mung beans sproutjuice groups (33, 66 and 132) mg/kg BW/day. Mice treated  every  dayfor  20days  orally. Micewere  sacrificed;  testis  and  epididymis  were  collected  and examined.  The  spermatozoa  quality  (count,  progressive  motility  and  normal  morphology)  and spermatogenesis observed. The  results showedthatmung bean sproutsjuice  treatment  (33, 66 and 132) mg/Kg BW/day  for 20 days did not enhance male Swiss strain mice  fertility. Spermatogenesis score, count and normal morphology spermatozoa that receive treatment with mung bean sprout juice was not significantly  different  to  the  control group  (p>0.05). Conversely; mung  bean  sprouts  juice  treatment lead to decrease male Swiss strain mice spermatozoa progressive motility (p<0,05).
