Abstract

Semantic mapping is introduced as a vocabulary presentation technique through descriptive text. The purpose of this research is to know the effectiveness of using semantic mapping in increase the students vocabulary achievement to the seventh grade student of SMPN 1 Samalantan in academic year 2011/2012. The method is through pre-experimental study, using a measurement technique in form of multiple choices and matched words which consists of 20 test items with two supported descriptive text. Based on the data analysis, the mean score of pre-test 4.4, qualifying poor and post-test mean score was 7.4, qualifying average to good. The results confirmed that semantic mapping technique in teaching vocabulary through a descriptive text effectively increase the students achievement of vocabulary. Keywords: Vocabulary, semantic mapping, achievement Abstrak: Semantic mapping adalah teknik yang diperkenalkan sebagai salah satu teknik untuk mempresentasikan kosakata dalam suatu paragraf deskriptiv. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui semantic mapping efektiv dalam meningkatkan kosakata siswa kelas tujuh di SMPN 1 Samalantan tahun ajaran 2011/2012. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode eksperimen, bentuk penelitian eksperimen adalah multiple choices and matched words dengan jumlah soal 20 item disertai dua paragraf deskriptiv. Berdasarkan data analisis, nilai rata-rata pre-test adalah 4.4, dalam kualifikasi rendah (poor) dan nilai rata-rata post-test adalah 7.4, dalam kualifikasi baik (good). Maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa teknik semantic mapping dalam mengajar kosakata didalam paragraf deskriptiv efektiv menigkatkan kosakata siswa.

Abstract

AbstractThis study was aimed to know how STAD technique improves the eighth grade students? reading comprehension at SMP Negeri 21 Pontianak in academic year 2017/2018. It was a classroom action research which was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four components namely planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The research instruments were observation in form of observation checklist and field notes in order to describe the process while applying STAD technique in the classroom. In addition, she used measurement technique in form of reading test items to measure students? achievement. These reading test items including five aspects that helps students to improve their reading comprehension. These five reading aspects in terms of identifying main idea, identifying specific information, identifying reference, identifying inference and vocabulary. The result of this study that, the students improved their reading comprehension through STAD technique by discussing the issues proposed by the teacher in the reading text. Further more, they worked together in heterogeneous teams to get higher improvement point as their goal in each cycle. This condition created the compotitive athmosphere in the classroom. So, it increased students? motivation to comprhened the reading text.Keywords: Reading Comprehension, Classroom Action Research, STAD Technique

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to investigate how effective Twenty Questions Game is to teach yes/no questions in simple present tense to Year-7 students of? SMP Negeri 10 Pontianak? in Academic Year 2014/2015. This research was one of pre-experimental design, namely one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample was a cluster. They were Year-7 Class F, which consisted of 28 students. The tool used for collecting the data was pre-test and post-test. The test was an objective test with multiple choice items. The research findings indicate that the students? mean score in post-test is 94.05 higher than their mean score in pre-test which is 68.92. The effect size of the treatment is categorized as strong, with 1.92 that is larger than 1.00. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of Twenty Questions Game to teach Yes/No questions in Simple Present Tense to Year-7 students of? SMP Negeri 10 Pontianak? Academic Year 2014/2015 was effective.  Keywords: Twenty Questions Game, Yes/No Questions   Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk  mengetahui seberapa efektif Twenty Questions Game untuk mengajar Yes/No Questions dalam simple present tense pada siswa kelas 7 di SMP Negeri 10 Pontianak Tahun Akademik 2014/2015. Penelitian ini menggunakan pra-eksperimental, yaitu  dalam bentuk one group pre-test post-test. Sampel dari penelitian ini adalah sebuah kelompok. Mereka adalah siswa kelas 7F yang terdiri dari 28 siswa. Alat yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data adalah pre-test dan post-test. Test tersebut berupa objektif test dengan item pilihan berganda. Hasil dari penelitian,ini mengindikasikan bahwa nilai rata-rata siswa pada post-test sebesar 94.05 lebih tinggi dibandingkan nilai rata-rata siswa pada pre-test yang mana sebesar 68.92. Effect size dari perlakuan dikategorikan sebagai ?kuat?, dengan 1.92 lebih besar dari 1.00. Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan Twenty Questions Game untuk mengajar Yes/No Questions dalam simple present tense pada siswa kelas 7 di SMP Negeri 10 Pontianak Tahun Akademik 2014/2015 adalah efektif.   Kata kunci: Twenty Questions Game, Yes/No Questions

Abstract

Abstract: This research was to investigate the correlation of interest in listening to English songs and listening achievement to Semester - 3 Students of English Language Education Study Program, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Tanjungpura University, in Academic Year 2015/2016. It was a correlation study. The research participants were 54 students. The data were collected by administering closed-ended questionnaires and multiple choice questions of listening comprehension test. Then, the data were calculated by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient formula. Based on the research finding, the r (correlation coefficient) value of the two variables was 0.769. The obtained t-value was higher than the value of t-table at 1% (0.01) level of significance with degree of freedom (df) = 52 (8.658 > 2.673). It finds out there is a significant correlation of interest in listening to English songs and listening achievement.   Keywords: correlation, interest, English Songs, listening achievement Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui sejauh mana korelasi ketertarikan mendengarkan lagu-lagu berbahasa Inggris terhadap kemampuan mendengar mahasiswa semester 3 Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan, Universitas Tanjungpura, Tahun Ajaran 2015/2016. Penelitiaan ini merupakan penelitiaan korelasi. Jumlah sampel pada penelitian ini adalah 54 mahasiswa. Data di kumpulkan menggunakan kuestioner bentuk tertutup dan soal komprehensif mendengarkan berbentuk pilihan ganda. Kemudian, data dihitung  menggunakan rumus Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, nilai r (koefisien korelasi) pada kedua variabel adalah 0.769. Nilai t yang diperoleh lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan nilai t yang terdapat dalam t-table pada tingkat signifikan 1% (0.01) dengan derajat kebebasan = 52 (8.658 > 2.673). Hal ini mengindikasikan ada korelasi yang signifikan antara ketertarikan mendengarkan lagu-lagu berbahasa Inggris terhadap kemampuan mendengar mahasiswa.   Kata kunci: korelasi, ketertarikan, lagu ? lagu berbahasa Inggris, kemampuan mendengarkan

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to find out the translation procedure used by the Semester-6 students of English Language Education Study Program at Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Tanjungpura University in Academic Year 2014/2015 in translating idiom in form of narrative text. The research method used in this reseach was descriptive study. The descriptive study was used to describe and find out the translation procedure used by Semester-6 students in their translation. The sample of this research was 24 students. The result of this study showed that there were eight procedures that students used in their translations and there are three procedures that students tend to use. They are equivalence procedure that was used 57 times (26.39%), paraphrase procedure that was used 43 times (19.91%), and literal translation procedure that was used 35 times (16.20%).   Keywords: Translation, Translation Procedure, Idioms, Narrative   Abstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan prosedur penerjemahan yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa semester enam Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Tanjungpura Tahun Ajaran 2014/2015 dalam menerjemahkan idiom dalam bentuk teks narasi. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif. Penelitian deskriptif digunakan untuk menguraikan dan menemukan prosedur penerjemahan yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa semester enam dalam terjemahan mereka. Jumlah sampel pada penelitian ini adalah 24 mahasiswa. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat delapan prosedur yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa dalam terjemahan mereka dan terdapat tiga prosedur yang cenderung lebih sering digunakan. Prosedur-prosedur tersebut adalah prosedure ekuivalen yang digunakan sebanyak 57 kali (26.39%), prosedur parafrase yang digunakan sebanyak 43 kali (19.91%), dan prosedur penerjemahan literal yang digunakan sebanyak 35 kali (16.20%).   Kata Kunci: Terjemahan, Prosedur Terjemahan, Idiom, Naratif

Abstract

AbstractThis research entitled ?An Analysis of Types of Speech Acts in Whiplash by Damien Chazelle? was done in order to find out speech acts in the movie ?Whiplash? and their functions. This research is in qualitative form and used descriptive method. The source of the data was the dialogue transcript of the movie. ?Whiplash? was a one hour and forty minutes movie written and directed by Damien Chazelle. It is about Andrew Neiman, a student wanting to become a great jazz drummer faced with a killer teacher, Terrence Fletcher. The data was in form of words, phrases and sentences uttered by the main characters, being Andrew and Fletcher. The technique is content analysis. The context of each data was explained using S.P.E.A.K.I.N.G. technique and given after describing the speech acts. After the analysis, it was found that there are speech acts such as declarations, representatives, expressive, directives, and commissive. Declaration was uttered 7 times, representatives 30 times, expressive 27 times, directives, being the highest, 125 times, and commissive 6 times. Hopefully the result of this research can be useful for the readers. For students, hopefully, this research can be used as references for next research with different aspects. Keywords: Analysis, Speech Act, Whiplash

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to investigate the type and the frequency of grammatical interference of Indonesian into English translation. This research is descriptive. The tool of data collecting is a written test. The participants are 12 students selected randomly.The research findings show that the research subject made grammatical interference of their Indonesian into English translation. The interference is classified into four types namely, interference of addition, ommision, disordering and misinformation. There are two factors that cause interference in translation including interlingual and intralingual. The inter -lingual errors include the interference of Indonesian rules and the intra - lingual includes the application of rules in the target language, overgeneralization, an ignorance of rule restriction and false concept of hypothesis. Abstrak:Tujuan dari  penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui jenis jenis kesalahan dan frekuensi dari kesalahan gramatikal terjemahan Bahasa Indonesia kedalam Bahasa inggris. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif. Alat untuk mengumpulkan data adalah tes tertulis. 12 partisipan terpilih secara acak dalam penelitian ini. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa subjek penelitian membuat kesalahan gramatikal dalam terjemahan bahasa Indonesian ke dalam Bahasa inggris. Kesalahan itu diklasifikasi kedalam 4 jenis yaitu kesalahan dalam penambahan, kesalahan pengurangan, kesalahan penyusunan dan kesalahan penggunaan dalam terjemahan. Ada 2 faktor yang menyebabkan kesalahan dalam penerjemahan yaitu interlingual dan intralingual. Inter lingual termasuk kesalahan dalam aturan Bahasa Indonesia dan intra lingual dalam penggunaan target Bahasa, overgeneralisasi, pengabaianaturan dan pemahaman yang salah terhadap hipotesis. Abstract

Abstract: This research was a pre experimental research with one group pretest posttest design. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effectiveness of using photograph series to increase students' skill of writing a report text to Year-8 students of SMPN 12 Sungai Rasau Singkawang in Academic Years 2015/2016. There were 4 classes for the Year-8, each of which consisted of 22 to 23 students. The participants of this research were 22 students of Class 8C. The data were collected with the written test measure the students ?achievement of writing report text. The data was collected by measurement technique. The result of mean score of the students in pretest before treatment was 55.9 and the students mean score of posttest after treatment was 71.13. The research finding shows it is effective to teach writing using photograph series.   Keywords: The Effectiveness, Photograph Series, Writing Report Text   Abstrak: Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian pra eksperimental dengan satu kelompok desain pretest posttest. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui efektivitas penggunaan foto ber-seri untuk meningkatkan keterampilan siswa dalam menulis teks laporan kepada Tahun-8 siswa dari SMPN 12 Sungai Rasau Singkawang di Akademik Tahun 2015/2016. Terdapat  4 kelas untuk kelas-8, yang mana masing-masing terdiri dari 22 dan 23 siswa. Para peserta penelitian ini adalah 22 siswa dari Kelas 8C. Data dikumpulkan dengan tes mengukur kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks laporan. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik pengukuran. Hasil skor rata-rata siswa di pretest sebelum perlakuan adalah 55,9 dan skor rata-rata siswa di posttest setelah pelakuan adalah 71,13. Abstract

Abstract : Penelitian ini mengamati bagaimana siswa meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara mereka menggunakan teknik role play yang diterapkan didalam kelas melalui skrip percakapan relaying the telephone messages. Penelitian dilaksanakan di SMPN 18 Pontianak kelas 8 (delapan) dengan menggunakan metode classroom action research (CAR). Penelitian ini dilakukan terhadap 32 orang siswa terdiri atas 2 (dua) cycle. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan role play dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa terutama dalam percakapan relaying telephone messages. Pada cycle 1, masalah-masalah yang dihadapi oleh siswa dalam berbicara nampak jelas terlihat. Siswa banyak membuat kesalahan terutama dalam aspek pronunciation contohnya pada kata-kata seperti ?could?, ?right?, ?message? serta aspek kosakata dan ekspresi. Namun siswa belum memenuhi nilai KKM pada cycle 1 dimana pencapaian siswa hanya 48,2. Oleh karena itu, penulis melanjutkan penelitian cycle 2 agar kemampuan berbicara siswa dapat ditingkatkan. Pada cycle 2, penulis dibantu oleh kolaborator dalam menyiapkan lembar simulasi siswa atau lembar contoh percakapan yang bertujuan memudahkan siswa dalam menghafal informasi yang tertera pada lembar kosong yang disesuaikan dengan informasi masing-masing siswa. Ternyata dengan strategi ini cukup efektif dan suskes. Siswa akhirnya dapat mencapai nilai 66,9. Disamping itu permasalahan siswa pada aspek pronunciation, vocabulary and expression dapat teratasi. Kata Kunci: Kemampuan Berbicara Siswa, Menyampaikan Pesan Bertelepon Abstract : This research investigated how the students had improved their speaking skills when the role play technique was applied into the classroom through the scripted conversation of relaying the telephone messages. It was conducted in SMPN 18 Pontianak on the eighth grade students using classroom action research method.  There were 32 students which was done into two cycles. The result of the research proved that using role play could improve the students? speaking skills especially in relaying telephone messages. In cycle 1, the students showed their issues in speaking. They made mistakes particularly on pronunciation for example the words of ?could?, ?right?, ?message? etc as well as vocabulary and expression aspects. The class was noisy and some were active talking but some were less paid attention. The students did not fulfill KKM on cycle 1, it was only 48,2. Therefore, the writer would conduct cycle 2 to make the students get improved on speaking. In cycle 2, the writer was assisted by her collaborator to provide the student the simulation or sample conversation sheets. It was intended to make the students would memorize easily since the information on the blank sheet as accordance with their own information. Result of it that there was effective and worked successful. The students finally reached mean score of 66,9. Moreover, their issues about pronunciation, vocabulary and expression could be solved as well.   Key Word: Speaking Skills, Role Play

Abstract

Abstract :This research purpose is to investigate the effect size of the use of role play in teaching speaking at the eighth grade students in SMPN 12 Pontianak. The total number of sample in this study was 34 students. The method that is used in this research is pre-experimental method that applies pre-test and post-test to measure the effect (ES) size of the treatment. The instruments of this research are pre-test and post-test. Pre-test is applied before the treatment is given. Meanwhile post-test is applied after the treatment given. The different score of pre-test and post-test are respectively 50.58 and 64.41. The result show that the effect size of the use of role play in teaching is high because the Effect Size (ES) is > 0.5. Based on the mentioned results above, it can be concluded that teaching students to speak in English through role play was successful to be implemented. In other words, role play technique helped the teacher to teach her students to speak in English and encourage students to speak up in the classroom. Keywords: Teaching, Speaking, Role Play. Perbedaan angkaa ntara pretest dan posttest berturut ? turut yaitu 50.58 dan 64.41. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa pengaruh penggunaan role play dalam pembelajaran tergolong tinggikarena ES > 0.5.Berdasarkan hasil yang disebutkan sebelumnya,  dapat disimpulkan bahwa membelajarkan siswa untuk berbicara bahasa inggris menggunakan role play berhasil dilakukan. Dengan kata lain, teknik role play membantu guru dalam mengajar bahasa inggris dan mendorong siswa untuk berani berbicara di dalam  kelas. Kata Kunci :Pembelajaran, Berbicara, RolePlay.
