Abstract

Batam is one of cities whose industry has been developing so fast in which its island is located strategically. The development of Batam Island as an industrial area has pushed ahead the development of other sectors. As the industrial sectors have developed in Batam city, the residential areas for the workers have also developed quickly outside the industrial areas, Batam. The mushrooming of houses for workers who want to rent outside the industrial areas has caused a new problem for Batam, in which the quality of environment is getting low; furthermore, this tends cause slum. This is because a lot number of workers there are from other areas outside Batam. Moreover, this is also caused by the increase of employment composition in industrial sector of 53,03%. The aims of this research were to know the condition of the whole aspects - social, economy, and ecology in the future and to observe a sensitive driving system to determine the sustainability management of housing. This research was carried out in an industrial areas in Batam city including Muka Kuning, Tanjung Uncang and Tembesi. This research was performed in five months from May to September 2015. The modeling of development and housing which is sustainable in Batam Industria Areas was done with the approach of dynamic system. The result of simulation showed that the quality of environment in 2010 was 44.85% and will decrease of 34.62% in 2020. This was due to the increase of waste which could not be managed. The level of security and comfort to live in the housing in 2010 was 68.28% and will decrease of 48.43% in 2020. With all of the problems mentioned, the level of housing sustainability in 2010 was 42.33% and will decline of 29.58% in 2030. The process to develop the housing is still needed because there are still many people whose income is still low and they need the housing. The main strategy to develop and use the housing needs cooperation partnership or the relationship among the government, the manager of housing and the residents. Therefore, the development that will be done in the future will be better.  Keywords : housing, environment, dynamic system, simulation

Abstract

Being a tropical country Indonesia has vast biological resources but has not been explored maximally. Study on biological resource potential of plant as the raw materials of drugs has not been extensively done on animal biological resources. The study objective was to explore the medical potency of resources of an animal easily found in Indonesia such as worms. It is abundantly found living in tropical countries like Indonesia, cultivated with some organic compost media, and it is used as decomposer of garbage. Worm extract is believed to have high medical potency and traditionally it is used for cold treatment, typhoid, diarrhea, anti-hypertension, disinfectant, etc. This study conducted antibacterial testing on some common species of worms, namely Lumbricus rubellus, Pheretima posthuma and Megascolex sp. The antibacterial potency testing was done on typhoid causing bacteria, namely Salmonella typhi, and compared to generic antibiotic used for typhoid treatment. The result showed a lower potency then Ampicillin (between 25-35%), but the worms extract had potential to be developed as antibacterial materials or chemical compound.

Abstract

In big cities, the water quality of rivers used as the main raw water sources is getting worse and worse. That is caused by a lot of improper wastewater management systems, especially in industrial and settlement areas. As an example, the raw water of PDAM TKR Bojong Renged which is taken from Cisadane  Rives contains Ammonia 3.8 mg/l and it means that the content is not allowed to be used as the raw water for drinking water purpose. To cope with the problem, a bofiltration process can be used as one alternative to reduce Ammonia till the required standard quality.  A honeycomb tube type made plastic was the media of biofilter reactor. Operational condition was varied with HRT (Hydrolysis Retention Time) between 1-4 hours and air supply between 0-30 l/minute. The best process condition was found at 2 hour-HRT and 20 l/minute air supply and the Ammonia removal efficiency was about 65%. The linear regression equation was  ya  = -91.19xa + 77.12, where Y is for removal efficiency and the axis X is for Ammonia loading.  Keywords:  raw  water quality, ammonia, biofiltration, honeycomb tube, removal efficiency,

Abstract

Dagger-tooth pike conger fish (Muraenesox cinerus) is known to have high edible portions and white meat, thus can be used as a surimi raw materials. However, the textural quality of this fish meat is relatively poor after washing process of surimi. This reserch was aimed to analyze the effects of TGase activator and STPP addition to increase the textural quality of surimi malong. The method used is a factorial experiment with the addition of activator TGase 0.2; 0.4 and 0.6 and STPP at concentrations 0; 0.2; 0.5 and 0.8. Parameters observed were texture profile analysis (TPA), water holding capacity (WHC) folding test, bite test, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the addition of STPP and activator TGase (Ca) has significant effect on increasing the hardness, fracturability, chewiness, gumminess, bite test and the folding test. Furthermore, microscopies structure (SEM) of malong surimi showed smooth and solid surfaces.
