Abstract

Kapuk randu (Ceiba pentandra Gaertn.) merupakan salah satu tanaman yang memiliki banyak manfaat untuk masyarakat. Tanaman ini dimanfaatkan sebagai penahan tanah dari erosi, tanaman peneduh, bahan pengisi kasur dan pakan ternak. Saat ini biji kapuk randu banyak dikembangkan sebagai bahan obat kontrasepsi herbal. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui aktivitas ekstrak biji kapuk randu (Ceiba pentandra Gaertn.) terhadap perilaku kawin tikus (Rattus norvegicus) jantan. Rancangan yang digunakan adalah Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) dengan 4 kelompok perlakuan dan 8 ulangan yaitu P0 (aquades dan tween 80), P1 (0,07 mg/kg BB ekstrak biji kapuk randu), P2 (0,12 mg/kg BB ekstrak biji kapuk randu), P3(0,24 mg/kg BB ekstrak biji kapuk randu). Pemberian perlakuan ekstrak biji kapuk dilakukan selama 33 hari dengan pengamatan perilaku kawin dilakukan 3 hari sekali. Parameter yang diamati untuk menilai adanya perilaku kawin adalah jumlah kissing vagina, jumlah mount jumlah intromission. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak biji kapuk randu memberikan pengaruh yang nyata terhadap perilaku kawin tikus jantan yang ditunjukkan dengan menurunnya jumlah kissing vagina, jumlah mount dan jumlah intromission tikus jantan kelompok perlakuan.

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of monosodium glutamate (MSG) on spermatogenesis of male experimental mice.using 32 twelve-week old mice. They were divided randomly into 4 groups, each group consisted of 8 mice. One group was used as control, three groups were used as treatment, which received 1.5 mg/g body weight/day, 3 mg/g body weight/day and 4.5 mg/g body weight/day of MSG solution in destilled water for 35 days. The result showed that MSG treatment led to disturbance on spermatogenesis by reduction in some of the parameter studied. There was a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in the number of pachytene spermatocyte and spermatid 15, where as the decrease in spermatogonia was insignificant (p>0.05).

Abstract

Fish cultures in rice fields or areas that use water from a pesticide-polluted irrigation or river, are particularly vulnerable to the negative impact of pesticides. This study aims to assess the effect of organophosphates on growth, ovarian histopathology and fecundity of red tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). After acclimatization, 160 fishes (fingerlink stage) were kept in four ponds sized 2x1,5x0,8 m each. This study used a complete randomized block design and organophosphate administration through the feed. The study used four groups: control, and variations in dose of 2 ml (D1), 6 ml (D2), and 10 ml (D3) of pesticide per 100 grams of pellet, which is given in the morning (treatment) and in the evening (regular feed). Data were taken at week 3, 6, and 9, then the organophosphate treatments were stopped, and the last data were taken at week-18. Statistical analysis was performed by Anova and Duncan's Multiple Range Test. The results showed that the organophosphate pesticide inhibits the growth by reducing fish length and weight, reducing ovarian weight, increasing the number of oocyte atresia, damaging structure of the ovarian histology, and decreasing fecundity by reducing the number of egg production in the ovarian of red tilapia.

Abstract

Red calliandra (Calliandra calothyrsus Meissn.) leaf have the potential as phytoestrogens. In this study, adult female ovariectomized rats (as a model of menopause women) were given calliandra leaf extract containing estrogenic flavonoids. This study was an experimental design with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Forty-five ovariectomized female rats were divided into five groups i.e. untreated control (K), and the treatment group given 80% of C. calothyrsus ethanolic leaves extract doses 25 mg/ kg bw (P1), 50 mg/ kg bw (P2), 75 mg/ kg bw (P3) and 100 mg/ kg bw (P4). The test suspension was given once a day at 24-hour intervals by gavage as much as 0.5 ml/rat/day for two months. At the end of the treatments, blood was collected for blood biochemical tests including hemoglobin levels, hematocrit values, blood glucose and proteins levels. The results showed that C. calothyrsus leaf extract did not negatively affect the health status of the animals through blood biochemical parameters, i.e. hemoglobin levels, hematocrit values, and glucose and protein levels of ovariectomized female rats.

Abstract

The aimed of this study was to determine the effect of feed containing various concentrations of Calliandra calothyrsus Meissn. leaf meal mixed with pineapple peels and concentrate feed on histopathology and the activity of liver of local rabbit (Lepus sp). This study used a Post-Test Only Control Group Design, using 24 local male rabbits divided into 4 groups of feed treatment namely P0 = concentrate feed as control; P1 = mixture of 15% of calliandra leaf meal (CLM), 30% of pineapple peels (PP) and 55% of commercial feed (CF); P2 = 30% of CLM, 30% of PP and 40% of CF; and P3 = 45% of CLM, 30% of PP and 25% of CF). The treatments were given for 60 days and used 6 replicates for each group. The data were analyzed statistically by SPSS program version 22. The research results showed the increase of calliandra leaf meal levels in concentrated feed which were added 30% of pineapple peels still caused liver damage namely fatty degeneration, necrosis and congestion. It increased the ALT level, but did not affect the AST level in local rabbit serum.

Abstract

Breadfruit (Artocarpus communis Forst.) leaves have a high antioxidant content. This research aims to know the effect of breadfruit leaf extracts on blood sugar levels and the amount of sperm in rat. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) using 30 rats aged 2-3 months and weighing 150-200 grams. Male rats were divided into six groups, i.e. negative control group (K1) without treatment, groups K2, P1, P2, P3 and P4 are given then NaCl 0.9%, breadfruit leaf extracts 50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg body weight, and glibenclamide 1 mg/kg body weight respectively. The treatments were given every day for 21 days. Blood sugar levels were measured before and after aloksan administration, day 7, 14, and 21 after treatment as well as counting the number of sperm after 21 days. The data obtained were analyzed with ANOVA and Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT), using the program of SPSS For Windows version 22. Results of the study showed that breadfruit (Artocarpus communis Forst.) leaf extracts could lowered blood glucose levels and the most effective concentration was 100 mg/kg body weight of breadfruit leaf extracts given for 21 days with the effectiveness of 66,77%. Breadfruit leaf extracts did not inhibit spermatogenesis. So the amount of rat sperm did not different significantly among treatment. Keywords: blood sugar levels, breadfruit, rat, sperm count

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the histological features of the hippocampus and cerebral cortex of mice (Mus musculus L.) that induced by TMT which is given papaya leaf extract (Carica papaya L.) and to determine the optimum dose of neuroprotective papaya leaf extract.The study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments consisting of K+ (only TMT-induced at a dose of 0,6 mg/kgBW), K- (only given Na-CMC 0.5%), P1 (TMT-induced and given papaya leaf extract dose of 500 mg / kgBW) , P2 (TMT-induced and given papaya leaf extract at a dose of 1000 mg/kgBW), P3 (TMT-induced and given papaya leaf extract at a dose of 2000 mg/kgBW). The parameters observed were pyramidal cell necrosis and the percentage of pyramidal cells damage in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex. The results showed a decrease in the percentage of pyramidal cell damage in the hippocampus at P1 by 26,46%, P2 by 28,91%, and P3 by 26,67%. The percentage of pyramidal cell damage in the cerebral cortex decreased in P1 by 9,62%, P2 by 11,14%, and P3 by 14,88%. The optimum dose of papaya leaf extract which is neuroprotective is 2000 mg/kgBW (P3). Keywords: papaya leaf, TMT, neuroprotective, necrosis, cerebrum, hippocampus

Abstract

Nusa Dua is a popular tourist resort in Bali, where many hotels and other tourist facilities were built. In this resort, the sewage is centralized processed in a Sewage Treatment Ponds called “Unit Pengolahan Air Limbah PT ITDC” which is also often called Lagoon Nusa Dua. Nusa Dua sewage treatment ponds have 5 units of ponds, namely Pond 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, and Pond 3. In ponds 2B and 3, tilapia fish (Oreochromis mossambicus Linn.) was raised as a water quality bio-indicator. The aim of this research was to determine the histology condition of the gill of tilapia fish that raised in the Nusa Dua sewage tretment ponds which were then used as an indicator of water quality in these ponds. The research employed a complete randomized design in which 16 samples were taken from two sampling sites with eight replications. Results of this research showed that histologic changes of the gill that were observed including edemas, fusions, and hyperplasias of secondary lamellas as well as telangiectases. Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the effect of Leucaena leucocephala leaf extract on the development of ovarian follicle cells of mice (Mus musculus). Twenty four female mice, 10 weeks old, were divided into 4 groups. The control group (P0) were given 0.9% NaCl and the treatment group P1, P2 and P3 were given 0.5, 1 and 1.5 g/ kg bw of Leucaena leaf extract, respectively. The treatments were administered daily for 15 days by gavage. After the treatment ended, all mice were dissected to collect the ovaries. Histological preparation of the ovaries used paraffin method and Hematoxylin-Eosin staining. Observations were made on the number of primary, secondary, and tertiary oocytes, and also De Graaf follicles and corpus luteum. Data were statistically analyzed using One Way ANOVA method. The results showed there were no significantly differences (P&gt;0.05) on the number of primary, secondary, and tertiary oocytes, as well as De Graaf follicles and corpus luteum among the control and treatment groups. The mimosine content of Leucaena leaf extract was 0.87% (less than 1%) so it could not inhibit the secretion of Follicle Stimulating hormone by the pituitary gland. The doses of Leucaena leaf extract used in this research did not significantly affect the follicles development of mice ovaries. In this study, the mimosine content of Leucaena leaf extract decreased 91.8%.

Abstract

Leucaena leucocephala provides the highest amount of proteins compared to other greens. However, its use is restricted due to the content of mimosine, an antinutrition non-protein amino acid known to be toxic to animals. This study aimed to observe the effect of administration of more than 10% of processed Leucaena leucocephala leaf meal to the level of T3, T4 and the thyroid histopathology. In this study, Leucaena leucocephala leaves were soaked in distilled water for 12 hours. The processed of Leucaena leucocephala leaf meal was made into pellets containing 0%, 7.5%, 15%, and 22.5% leaf meal of total feeds respectively, and was fed to the rats during pregnancy and lactation. The level of triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), and the thyroid histological features were the parameters observed. The collected data were statistically analyzed by SPSS 20.0 for Windows using One-way ANOVA followed by Duncan Multiple Range Test to observe any significant difference among the 4 treatment groups (?=5%). Meanwhile, the presence of hyperplastic cells and follicle lumens filled with vesicles and colloids was descriptively analyzed by means of available literatures. The analysis of T3 and T4 level revealed that there was no any significant difference between the control and treatment groups. The epithelial cells of thyroid follicles in the treatment groups of P1, P2 and P3 showed hyperplasia and were detached from their respective basal membranes.
