Abstract

This study discusses the social movement conducted by post-reform Tzu Chi organization in Medan. The theory used is theory of social movements with three main factors in social movements; 1) political opportunity structure, 2) collective action frames, and 3) resource mobilization theory. This study aims to a) looking the concept of social movements, b) analyzing the concept of religious movements and c) revealing the position of Tzu Chi in Buddhism. This research applies qualitative methods with direct observation by analyzing subjective and objective experiences in sociological approach. This study was conducted in Medan City due to the following reasons: (1) the diverse population of Medan (2) Tzu Chi has many programs and volunteers in this city. The key informant in this study is the management of structural organization Tzu Chi, as it is considered representative and experienced in the organization. Additional informants are regular volunteers. The results of this study reveals that in the post reform era, Tzu Chi was growing and getting support from the inter-faith and ethnic. Majority ethnic of Tzu Chi is Chinese and form an organization which plays role as a container in showing its identity to maintain social stability and harmony amidst the diverse city of Medan. Their funding network collected through the business network, kinship and spiritual motivation of Buddhist teachings make organizational resources increasingly move to broaden the vision and mission of the organization. In conclusion, in the socio-religious context, Tzu Chi purifications for its Buddhist followers and implements organizational management patterns with 4 in 1 systems which considered modern, minimizing organizational conflicts and able to face the challenges.

Abstract

"Spare time" or "free time" is remaining time someone has besides the time they have for series of mandatory activities to make ends meet. Thus, spare time can be filled with activities such relaxing, resting, recreation, or any other activities to develop ones self without any coercion from others. With Torkildsen (2011) approach, in this writings we found out that Chinese ethnic merchants and Toba Bataknese ethnic merchants in Tanjung Pinang have different ways to spend their spare time: (1) On their time while doing the business, Chinese ethnic merchants prefer to fill their spare time watching television and on the other hand Toba Bataknese ethnic merchants prefer to spend their free time listening to the music. (2) As an activity, on their free time Chinese ethnic merchants choose to travel; Toba Bataknese ethnic merchants choose to do some exercises. (3) For positive mental health or for better mood, Chinese ethnic merchants choose to pay a visit to synagogues, while in contrary Toba Bataknese ethnic merchants prefer to attend "family-name gathering". (4) For broaden meaning of spare time, Chinese ethnics merchants prefer activities which give them freedom, while Toba Bataknese ethnic merchants choose to have conversations with colleagues. (5) From lifestyle perspective, both Chinese and Toba Bataknese ethnic merchants choose to fill their spare time with social activities.

Abstract

One’s habit in language use is influenced by daily social life structures thereby creating different interaction patterns both individually or as a group. Sociology of language critically analyzes the use of language as a symbol of power which dominates the arena in a multicultural school. This research utilizes mixed methods as it is considered capable of finding and answering the issues and problems under examination. The location of research was Sultan Iskandar Muda High School which is the only multicultural education curriculum based pilot school in the city of Medan. The informants in this study were the principal, teachers, and students while the respondents were samples of high school students totaling 86 individuals. Research results show that one’s power in language use is determined by one’s interest in using language. School power and individual power has different portions when positioning one’s self during interactions. Although power is coercive in nature, the community must submit to rules of the school. The power of the school in determining language emphasizes values of nationalism, which is different to individual or group power which adjusts the language to the situation at hand so that relations of language use has its own portion of interaction in the multicultural school.

Abstract

This article is discussing on how the rise and tide of Minangkabau traditional trading occur in Kuala Lumpur. The research focused on four areas in Kuala Lumpur, Chow Kit, Kampung Baru, Kampung Dato? Keramat and Mesjid India area, reveals that there are some small stalls of Minangkabau  traditional trading are now owned by another Indonesian ethnicity such as Acehenese and Boyanese tribe. Meanwhile, some of the businesses are still possessed by Minangkabau tribe such as Nasi Padang and textile trading. The phenomenon is affected by the lack of business innovation, capital, local competitor and the fact that they are unable to follow the trend in business. Even though,  there are some of well-developed traditional business run by Minangkabau people in Kuala Lumpur due to the existence of marketing creativity, innovative items, and the conducive partnership with another Minangkabau entrepreneurs in the textile merchant  in form of kiosk or  arcade in Mesjid India area that has connection with another counterpart of the  nationwide  including Sabah and Sarawak.

Abstract

Mobile phones for teenagers turn out to be used more than just a means of ordinary communication, cell phone use in teenagers' daily lives related to lifestyle. The purpose of this study is to find out cell phone use for teenagers. This method was chosen because the issue that was explored was a matter of meaning. Data collection techniques used included observation and interviews. Mobile phones are used as an image of the lifestyle of teenagers buying a mobile phone that is trending with the main reason to look slang, have confidence in front of their friends, and show who they are to others. Mobile phones are very important items in the lives of teenagers. Innovations that are presented in the features available on mobile phones make teenagers increasingly unable to escape from this one object. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that cell phone phones are important in teenager?s life; mobile phones are a side of modern life, cell phones as a lifestyle obtained in cell phones when used.
