Abstract

Abstract: Students? demotivation is an area which is not widely reached from studies. It is essential to revover the students? demotivation factors in learning English. 240 ninth grade of junior high schools students were taken part. There were four factors of demotivation, they were seen from teacher, classmates, text books and activities, and students? characteristics aspects.Key Words: students? demotivation, learning English, perceptionsAbstrak: Demotivasi siswa merupakan topik yang belum begitu tersentuh oleh penelitian. Oleh karena itu, penting untuk menguak penyebab demotivasi siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Ada 240 siswa yang bersedia menjadi sampel penelitian ini. Hasil penelitian menemukan empat faktor demotivasi siswa, yaitu aspek giri, teman sekelas, buku pelajaran dan kegiatan, dan karakteristik siswa.Kata kunci: demotivasi siswa, belajar bahasa Inggris, persepsi

Abstract

Abstract: This survey study was intended to investigate the perception of senior high school English teachers? and students about personal competence. Using Probability Simple Random Sampling, this study involved 35 English teachers and 246 students of public senior high schools in Kota Malang. Instruments used are questionnaires and interview guides for English teachers and students samples. The findings revealed that both English teachers and students perceived the English teachers? personal competence is very good. However, the English teachers? perception covered personal competence related to cognitive and affective skills. Meanwhile, the students? perception on personal competence only related to the affective skill.Key words: perception, English teachers, personal competence Abstrak: Penelitian survei ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi guru Bahasa Inggris dan peserta didik SMA mengenai kompetensi kepribadian. Menggunakan Probability Simple Random Sampling, penelitian ini melibatkan 35 guru Bahasa Inggris dan 246 peserta didik dari SMA-SMA Negeri di Kota Malang. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah kuesioner dan panduan wawancara untuk sampel guru Bahasa Inggris dan peserta didik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa baik guru Bahasa Inggris ataupun peserta didik memperhatikan bahwa kompetensi kepribadian guru Bahasa Inggris sangat bagus. Namun, persepsi guru Bahasa Inggris meliputi kompetensi kepribadian yang berhubungan dengan kemampuan kognitif dan afektif. Sementara itu, persepsi peserta didik hanya berhubungan dengan kemampuan afektif.Kata kunci: persepsi, guru Bahasa Inggris, kompetensi kepribadian

Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed to improve students? narrative writing by implementing POWER strategy combined with the animated film at class VIIIB of SMPS Kartika Kendari. It was CAR design conducted in 2 cycles. The findings showed an improvement in writing ability in which 29 students (82.85%) achieved the minimum passing grade and the rest 6 students (17.15%) were in fair level of writing, and the result of teaching and learning process showed that 82.5% respond positively. The teachers are suggested to use this strategy as an alternative way to improve the writing ability and the media that is used should be appropriate with students? level.Key Words: POWER strategy, animated film, writing narrative Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis naratif siswa dengan menerapkan POWER strategy berbantuan film animasi pada kelas VIIIB SMPS Kartika Kendari. Penelitian tindakan kelas ini dilakukan 2 siklus. Temuan-temuan menunjukan ada peningkatan kemampuan menulis dimana 29 siswa (82.85%) mencapai KKM dan sisanya 6 siswa (17.15%) berada pada tingkatan cukup dalam menulis, dan hasil proses belajar dan mengajar menunjukan 82.5% merespon dengan positif. Guru disarankan untuk menggunakan strategi ini sebagai salah satu alternatif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis dan media yang digunakan harus sesuai dengan tingkatan siswa.Kata Kunci: stategi POWER, film animasi, menulis naratif

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to investigate the improvement of writing ability by employing project based learning strategy. It involved 32 students of tenth grade Design Communication Visual department in SMKN 1 Banyuwangi. The students were asked to write descriptive text by describing an innovative product design. The essay was analysed to measure the students? improvement in writing ability. The research design of this study is a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The result revealed that the implementation of Project based learning significantly improved the students writing ability of descriptive text and it also proven improving aspects of writing; organization, content,  vocabulary, and grammar.Key Words: project-based learning, writing skill, descriptive textAbstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti peningkatan kemampuan menulis dengan menggunakan strategi project based learning. Penelitian melibatkan 32 siswa kelas sepuluh jurusan Desain Komunikasi Visual di SMKN 1 Banyuwangi. Siswa diminta untuk menulis teks deskriptif dengan mendiskripsikan desain inovatif. Karangan dianalisis untuk mengukur peningkatan kemampuan menulisnya. Desain penelitian ini adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pene-rapan project based learning secara signifikan meningkatkan kemampuan menulis teks deskriptif sis-wa dan juga terbukti meningkatkan aspek penulisan; organisasi, konten, kosa kata, dan tata bahasa.Kata kunci: pembelajaran berbasis proyek, keterampilan menulis, teks deskriptif

Abstract

This study aimed to know if students who work in heterogeneous (HET) pairs have significantly better writing ability than those who experience working in homogenous (HOM) pairs. This study involved two intact classes that consist of 40 EFL students taking the Intermediate Reading and Writing course in the English Education Department in one of the large private universities in Indonesia. This study employed a causal-comparative design and lasted for twelve meetings including pretest and posttest. The two groups of HET pairs and HOM pairs experienced collaborative writing activities following the steps of the Genre-based Approach. The data were collected through writing pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Mann Whitney to compare the students? post-test scores. The findings show that both high and low proficiency students who experienced collaborative writing in homogenous proficiency pairings have better writing ability than those who experienced collaborative writing in heterogeneous proficiency pairings. This indicates that pair collaboration can support language learning more optimally when there are no large proficiency gaps among pairs.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the satisfaction of host companies to internship students toward their competences and performance and suggest improvements to the internship program. The research subjects were students who were undertaking internships in 64 institutions in Malang areas, both in the business and industrial world. Research data are obtained from questionnaires. The results showed that the qualifications of the internship students were in a range good to very good. These findings are following the expectations of host companies, which also recognize that the competencies of internship students are in line with their expectations and needs. However, some students worked less efficiently, so host companies are not really satisfied. According to the host companies, three things need to be improved, (1) the duration of the internship, (2) monitoring, and (3) student readiness. Regarding the length of the internship, host companies suggest that the duration of the internship program occupies at least three months. Host companies hope that the supervisors monitor all students who are apprenticed. Besides, the internship students should prepare in advance by giving them special provisions about the company's product knowledge and related hard skills and soft skills needed in the jobs in the future. These findings suggest the universities, faculties, students, host companies to develop both of the experiences and satisfaction as possible.

Abstract

Abstract:  Digital resources have been proven able to assist English language learners in improving their interaction skills, widening their vocabulary range, and enhancing their reading comprehension. Despite their benefits, digital tools can also create distractions for students. This article reports on the result of a survey to 150 vocational students on Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) materials. The students agreed that MALL materials were more authentic (67%) and more accessible (59%) than traditional learning materials. The use of MALL materials could trigger classroom interactions (64%) and facilitated learning (56%). The implementation of MALL materials allowed students to get immediate feedback from the teachers (73%).Abstrak: Sumber daya digital telah terbukti dapat membantu pelajar bahasa Inggris dalam meningkatkan keterampilan interaksi, memperluas jangkauan kosa kata, dan meningkatkan pemahaman bacaan mereka. Selain bermanfaat, alat digital juga dapat menggangu proses belajar. Artikel ini melaporkan hasil survei terhadap 150 siswa kejuruan terkait dengan implementasi materi berbasis gawai atau Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL). Ditemukan bahwa siswa sepakat bahwa materi MALL lebih otentik (67%) dan lebih mudah diakses (59%) daripada materi pembelajaran tradisional. Penggunaan MALL dapat memicu interaksi kelas (64%) dan memfasilitasi pembelajaran (56%). Dengan menerapkan materi berbasis gawai atau MALL materials di kelas, para siswa mengakui bahwa mereka bisa mendapatkan umpan balik langsung dari para guru (73%).

Abstract

As an important element of language and as the essential part of linguistic competence, grammar has a central role in making up learners’ language skills and their communicative competence. However, from the historical perspective of language teaching methodology, the role of grammar has once been over-emphasized, likely neglected, or treated equally important with fluency in communication. This article reviews aspects of the teaching of grammar, varying from common issues of grammar teaching in the broader perspective of foreign/second language learning to the teaching of grammar as well as research on grammar teaching in the Indonesian context. In light of the discussion of these various issues, this article provides some recommendations for future research and insights for addressing grammar in English language classrooms in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to know the difference of critical thinking ability of experiment class students using inquiry strategy based multiliteracies skills with control class using conventional learning. This research was conducted in SMP Negeri 1 Meulaboh. The subjects of the study were the students of class VIII with the sample of class VIII-A and VIII-B which amounted to 54 students. This type of research is quasi experimental with nonequivalent control group design. The result of the research showed (1) the improvement of students critical thinking ability with moderate qualification after receiving treatment with multiliteration skills based inquiry strategy, (2) there is a significant difference of students critical thinking ability in the experimental class and control class. Based on the results of the research that has been proposed, the inquiry strategy based multiliteracies skills is recommended for the use of IPS teachers in improving students critical thinking ability.Abstrak: Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui perbedaan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa kelas eksperimen yang menggunakan strategi pembelajaran inkuiri berbasis keterampilan multiliterasi dengan kelas kontrol yang menggunakan pembelajaran konvensional. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di SMP Negeri 1 Meulaboh. Subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas VIII dengan sampel kelas VIII-A dan VIII-B yang berjumlah 54 siswa. Jenis penelitian adalah quasi experimental dengan rancangan nonequivalent control group design. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan (1) terjadinya peningkatan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa dengan kualifikasi sedang setelah menerima treatment dengan strategi pembelajan inkuiri berbasis keterampilan multiliterasi, (2) terdapat perbedaan secara signifikan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa pada kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian yang telah dikemukakan, maka strategi pembelajaran inkuiri berbasis keterampilan multiliterasi direkomendasikan untuk digunakan guru IPS dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa.

Abstract

Abstract: Attitudes Toward Extensive Reading Among English Teachers of Senior High Schools. This survey aims to investigate the attitudes of 32 English teachers of public senior high schools in a district in East Java Province, Indonesia, toward Extensive Reading (ER) as one of the ways of improv­ing reading habit, covering the teachers? cognitive, behavioral, and affective attitudes. Questionnaires in the form of closed-ended and open-ended questions were used as the main instrument to collect the da­ta, complemented with interviews with sampled teachers to gain more in-depth understanding of the phenomena under study. The results show that cognitively, most English teachers have positive cogni­tive attitudes, which implies good understanding of ER. The teachers? affective attitudes also reflect their eagerness to know more about implementing ER and to find ways of solving potential problems. However, in terms of behavioral attitudes, the data show that the teachers are still in doubt to conduct ER program due to several problems, such as time allotment, reading resources, students? motivation, curriculum and school programs, learning assessment, and school rules. The findings imply the need for policy makers at school and government?s educational agencies, as well as experts in the field to help support the teachers in setting up ER program at schools by addressing the issues that teachers are con­cerned with.Abstrak: Sikap Guru Bahasa Inggris Sekolah Menengah Atas Terhadap Membaca Ekstensif. Studi survei ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki sikap (kognitif, konatif, dan afektif) dari 32 guru bahasa Inggris Sekolah Menengah Atas di salah satu kota di Provinsi Jawa Timur, Indonesia, terhadap mem­baca ekstensif sebagai salah satu cara untuk meningkatkan kebiasaan membaca. Kuesioner dalam bentuk pertanyaan tertutup dan terbuka digunakan sebagai instrumen utama untuk mengumpulkan data, serta dilengkapi dengan wawancara dengan guru sampel untuk mendapatkan pemahaman mendalam tentang fenomena yang diteliti. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa secara kognitif, sebagian besar guru bahasa Inggris memiliki sikap kognitif positif, yang menyiratkan pemahaman yang baik tentang membaca eks­tensif. Sikap afektif guru juga mencerminkan keinginan mereka untuk mengetahui lebih banyak tentang penerapan membaca ekstensif dan untuk menemukan cara memecahkan masalah potensial. Namun, da­lam hal sikap konatif, data menunjukkan bahwa guru masih ragu untuk melakukan program membaca ekstensif karena beberapa masalah, seperti alokasi waktu, sumber bacaan, motivasi siswa, kurikulum dan program sekolah, penilaian pembelajaran, dan peraturan sekolah. Hasil-hasil ini menyiratkan per­lunya pembuat kebijakan di sekolah dan lembaga pendidikan pemerintah, serta para ahli di lapangan untuk membantu mendukung para guru dalam menyiapkan program membaca ekstensif di sekolah-sekolah dengan menangani isu-isu yang berkaitan dengan guru.
