Abstract

This paper is aimed to reveal An-Naims idea of constitutionalism, human rights, and citizenship in reading the phenomena of some activists struggle for enforcing Shariah in South Sulawesi. It is important to notice that todays debatable issue is about to what extents Shariah can be implemented in Indonesia and how it should be tolerated by Muslims and non-Muslims living there. For such reason, reading An-Naim who has focused on Sharia in a secular state, is necessary. This study has efforts to critically respond An-Naim in the case of KPPSI (Preparatory Committee for the Implementation of Shariah), a committee that believes that special status for South Sulawesi to implement Shariah will be the best solution for Indonesian, especially in South Sulawesi. The discussion is generally divided into three parts: (1) exploring An-Naims points of views, especially in regard with Shariah and secular state; (2) a short description of KPPSI, either about its historical phases or political agenda, in enforcing Shariah in South Sulawesi; and (3) a critical view of Shariah on the ground by which the KPPSI will be used as a case to reconsider about paradoxical applicability of An-Naim notion on Shariah in secular state. To conclude, the important remarks are provided in the end of this paper.

Abstract

Niat ziarah yang suci akan bergeser menjadi pariwisata, perdagangan, migrasi, ekspresi nasionalisme, munculnya diaspora, maysarakat yang suka takhayul dan hal buruk lainnya.---AbstractsThis paper is to analyze ?image? of Sunan Ampel, including Ampel tombs, mosque, wells, and market, projected within the three online directories  and the possible impacts of this use on different visitors. By using Turner?s concept ?communitas?, liminality, and third space, Sunan Ampel site is also considered as a space in which the ties between tourism and pilgrimage are unclear, blurred, and poorly classified. This relationship has also resulted in possible potentialities on how that site has projected mysticism, death, and apophantic nature of Sunan Ampel. The changing projection of the site will be also highlighted in the context of economic and historical spheres. The consequence of such interpretation is that Sunan Ampel could be empty vessel in which the interpretative battle and representations are continuously contested. ?Sacred pilgrimage? to Sunan Ampel, finally, overlaps with tourism, trade, migration, expression of nationalism, creation of diasporas, imagining communities, and others.

Abstract

Transgender issues, including those who have been called as ‘waria’, are diverse, complex, and evolving, particularly in Indonesia where the most inhabited people are Muslims commonly bringing with them any sexual and, sadly, religious stereotype to waria as marginal(ized) individuals. This paper aims to raise a question of our primordial understanding and religious experience on the existence of the transgender community. It focused on an empirical study of Kebaya (Keluarga Besar Komunitas Waria Yogyakarta), Yogyakarta’s Center for Transgendered, which is an NGO developed by transvestites in Yogyakarta to struggle against prejudice, acceptance, and HIV Aids. This study is not specifically to analyze their social relation, but importantly how the NGO became a shared space of interfaith dialogue and a representation of religios life among transgender people in Yogyakarta, including the ways they build socio-cultural-religious relation with other people and religious figures. It would be analyzed under socio-anthropological approach to religion by which this study reflect them as a part of the certain community who had special position in terms of interreligious dialogue. The implication of this study suggests that interfaith dialogue is possible, not only among the inner-circle of mainstream religious believers, but also among and from the edge community: from those who often feel ostracized within today’s trans-population in Indonesia.

Abstract

Since firstly written in 1612 until the “final version” in 1836, Babad Tanah Jawi had a special place among intellectual debates, partly, in regard with its “functions” as mythical genre, ancient prophecy, historical narrative of Java, genealogical prototype, and typical structure with previous texts. However, little attention was given to the fact that Mataram, largely depicted in Babad Tanah Jawi, is considered as having ‘problematic’ double genealogy, which partly resulted from a double familial lineage of Batara Guru and the Prophet Adam, and the synthetic power of Demak and Majapahit. This study attempts to depict a scholarly contestation of the double genealogy of Mataram and its implication on ambivalent narratives of rebellion in the text.  Constructed as ex post facto in the universum of historical references, Babad Tanah Jawi seemingly takes its dual position in providing a subjectively constructed cosmology of Javanese characters and in attempting to objectively illustrate historical events. In some ways, it impacts on the way the text justified Javanese rulers by providing supernatural genesis of ancestors, and ‘purifying’ genealogical defects. The result is a distorted story of those who failed and succeeded to take over the Javanese kingdoms. The ambiguity lies on the way it has to maintain mythological genealogy of rebelling descendants and to perceive such rebellion as subversive.

Abstract

This article is aimed to figure out the significant position of Hadis in the midst of contemporary discourse of Islamic legal theory in general, or in Ushul Fiqh in specific, on which Al Quran and Sunnah were based for law determination. In the history of Islamic development, there have been two major models of evaluation of Hadis, either by Muhaddits or by Ushuliyyun, which unfortunately offered no systematic methodology pertaining to make a clear of the position, of the function, and of the epistemological value of Hadis in legal theory (also in theological, philosophical, mystical fields of knowledge). This study attempts to (re)conceptualize a scope of Al Quran and Sunnah in the pre-classical Islamic period, which notably characterized an important hermeneutic relationship between both of them, and to make critical questions of classical Muhaddits’ and Ushuliyyun’s methodologies, which focused merely on ‘normative’ issues of isnad and mutawatir, contributing to the negation of primordial-hermeneutic relationship Al Quran and Sunnah and to the hypothetic assumption that the only objective of Hadis was to concern with textual authenticity (shahih) or narrators’ knowledge (mutawatir). By offering a new methodology which makes a question of both models of evaluation and provides a historical retention of hermeneutic relationship between Al Quran and Sunnah, this article was considerably to build an ethic-religious synthesis between Ulumul Hadis and Ushul Fiqh. Keywords: Al Quran, Sunnah, Hadis, Ushul Fiqh

Abstract

From the first writing of 1612 to the final version in 1836, the Babad Tanah Jawi (BTJ) has always been debated mainly regarding its function as genre, prophecy, historical narrative, genealogical prototypes, and testimonial structures on Javanese history. Nevertheless, it is rare for the study of how Islam Nusantara, specifically described in the Babad Tanah Jawi, is considered to have a problematic double genealogy as the effect of the breaking down of the basket between Batara Guru and Prophet Adam, a discrepancy that reflects Islam Nusantara as the result of a syncretistic forces between (Islam) Demak and (Hindu) Majapahit. This study seeks to illustrate the scholarly contestation of the double gynowogy of the Islamic revival of the archipelago after the fall of Majapahit and its implications for the ambivalent narratives of insurrection in Babad Tanah Jawi, a text that sparked much debate among anthropologists, philologists and archaeologists of the world, Pararaton and Nagarakertagama - many referred by anyone who wants to learn about Islam and Javanese kings.

Abstract

Abstract As a global occult practice, Tarot has been practiced by local people, including Javanese practitioners, and it is perhaps that a study of localization is necessary to determine how strongly influential Javanese belief system has been upon Tarot practitioners, or how Javanese Tarot practitioners have adopted and modified Javanese esoteric and occult practices into Tarot. My thesis is that localizing Tarot could be possible in terms of adaptation, acculturation, indigenization, or—in some extents—hybridization in Javanese society, either in the levels of superficial, practice, or values. By using ethnography as method of research, this study has resulted in two major findings: (1) Javanese Tarot practitioners have negotiated themselves in the cultic milieu they live in by localizing their alias, communities, Tarot reading strategies, Tarot decks, and their personal preference to gather in candi, and (2) Tarot practice in Java has closely been related to some Javanese belief systems, such as rasa and kahanan, and it makes them consciously or unconsciously practice Javanism in their daily activity of Tarot with different levels. However, these have implications and challenges they should deal with: cultural ambivalence, a cultural implication that they can’t be free from it, because as much as they play Western Tarot, they are still Javanese. This ambivalence also indicates an inseparable concept of globalization as dynamic one in the term of ‘localizing’. The idea of localizing Tarot makes it possible to be a global phenomena in which local Javanese belief system embedded into Javanese Tarot practice became a part of global network. The involvement of Javanese practitioners in e-commerce or international market suggests a juncture between particular occult practices and global ones to celebrate the cultural hybridity within Tarot.
