Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate plant growth of Intsia bijuga at 5 years old in Sobang, Banten for supplying good genetic material in the future. Establishment of the trial was conducted in 2007 using Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) that consisted of 6 blocks, 100 families nested in 10 provenances, 4 treeplot for each family with a spacing of 4 x4 m. Measurements were taken periodically every year on the survival percentage, total height and stem diameter at the breast height or dbh. At the age of 5 years showed that the significant differences among provenance in survival percentage that ranged from 41.61 to 65.11 %,  average of plant height were 1.04 to 2.82 m and dbh 1.24 to 1.59 cm. The growth variation families also showed significant differences in height and diameter. The survival rate ranged from 12.5-91.67 %, average plant height were 0.52-2.55 m and dbh 0.90-2.44 cm. Individual tree heritability estimate for height was height (0.344) while that of diameter was moderate (0.259). Family heritabilities for height and diameter was considered moderate, namely 0.573 and 0.491 respectively. Genetic correlation between height and diameter growth was positive and high (0.834).

Abstract

Falcataria moluccana seedling seed orchards was established in 2006 located in Kediri East Java in collaboration between the Center for Forest Biotechnology and Tree Improvement Research and Development and Perum Perhutani. 77 open-pollinated families from four seed sources were progeny tested in Pare Kediri, East Java. The trial was arranged in a randomized completely block design, 4 tree line plot and replicated 6 times. At 8 months of age there were significant differences among seed sources for diameter. The survival rate of family varied from 54.2 % to 86.5%. Difference betwen families within seed sours were significant only for diameter growth. Heritability estimanes for diameter were moderate (h2i= 0.16; h2f = 0.42).).Genetic correlation beetwen diameter and height was strong (rg = 0.89) and higher than  phenotipic correlatione (rp = 0.86).

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the effect of auxin (NAA) and cytokinin (BAP) on shoot initiation in tissue culture of sengon (Falcataria moluccana)using cotyledon segment. Cotyledon segments were colleect from aseptic seedlings. Cotyledon segments were aseptically cultured on a murashige and  Shoog’s (MS) medium containing different concentrations of Benzyl-amino-purine (BAP) ranging from 1 to 3 mg/l and Naphtalene-acetic-acid (NAA) ranging from0,01 to 0,03 mg/l. Result of analysis of variance inicates that plant groeth regulator of BAP and NAA had significant effect on shoot formation up to 4 months age. The subsequent Duncan Multiple Range Test indicates that concentration of 0,001, 0,02 and 0,03 mg/l gave no significant effect on shoot formation and shoot growth

Abstract

Merbau (Intsia bijuga) is one of high economic value timbers. Establishment of seed source of merbau is essential tosupply qualified seeds for plantation. Center for Forest Biotechnology and Tree Improvement has established provenance test of merbau at Sumberwringin Research Forest in Bondowoso, East Java. The objectives of this study are to know survival and genetic variation of growth traits in provenance test plot of merbau. This provenance test was designed as Randomized Complete Block Design with single factor of provenance consisted of Halmahera Timur, Waigo, Oransbari, Wasior, Nabire and Seram. Each provenance comprises 3 blocks as replication and 60 treeplots of each block. The result showed high survival rate of all provenances (above 90 %). Moreover, genetic variation of height and stem diameter among provenances was also high. The best provenance for survival, and height for all observation years was Wasior. The best provenance for diameter for all observation years was Halmahera Timur. Meanwhile, provenance having the best value of survival, height and diameter for all observation years was Halmahera Timur. The  provenance having the worst value of height and diameter for all observation years was Seram. Whereas, the worst provenance of survival at 1, 2 and 3 years old were Waigo, Halmahera Timur dan Seram, respectively.

Abstract

Aren tree or Sugar Palm (Arenga pinnata Merr) is one of bioethanol-producer which has advantages compared to other plant producing bioethanol. This study is  aimed to determine the genetic diversity of aren tree populations in its natural distribution. Genetic diversity of four populations were investigated by isozyme markers with 4 enzyme systems namely Esterase (EST), Glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT), Diaphorase (DIA) and 6-Phospogluconate dehydrogenase (6Pg). The number of alleles identified by 9 alleles are distributed on   four polymorphic loci. The research revealed that mean alleles per locus was 2,2500. The mean effective number of alleles per polymorphic locus was 1,8377. All loci were of  polymorphic. The mean genetic diversity within population was 0,4381and the proportion of genetic variation among populations was 0,0702. The UPGMA cluster analysis based on Nei’s standard genetic distance reflected two main clusters. The first cluster consisted of Central Java and South Kalimantan populations; while second cluster included the populations of Bengkulu and North Sulawesi.

Abstract

Merbau is one of threatened forest genetic resources. Based on IUCN Red List Categories. conservation status of merbau is vulnerable (VU A1cd). Conservation effort of merbau is urgently required to save this species from extinction. Center for Forest Biotechnology and Tree Improvement Yogyakarta had established ex situ conservation plots of merbau in Forest Research in Bondowoso, East Java and Gunung Kidul Yogyakarta. Genetic resources used in those ex situ conservation plots were from seven provenances namely Halmahera Timur, Waigo, Oransbari, Wasior, Nabire, Seram, dan Mandopi/Twanwawi. This research aims to evaluate adaptability, growth and regeneration of merbau plants grown in ex situ conservation plots in Bondowoso dan Gunung Kidul. The ex situ conservation plot in Bondowoso was designed as Randomized Complete Block Design with single factor of provenance. At the ex situ conservation plot in Gunung Kidul each provenance was planted in one block. The results showed that adaptability of merbau plants at ex situ conservation plots in Bondowoso dan Gunung Kidul was good. Growth of height and diameter of merbau plants from several provenances at ex situ conservation plot in Gunung Kidul were better than those in Bondowoso at all observation ages. Height and diameter average of merbau plants at ex situ conservation plots in Bondowoso and Gunung Kidul at one year old were 78.21 cm; 9.58 mm and 97.88 cm; 9.58 mm respectively. Height and diameter average of merbau plants at ex situ conservation plots in Bondowoso and Gunung Kidul at two years old were 95.36 cm; 12.95 mm and cm; 19.62 mm respectively. Regeneration of merbau has been successful at Gunung Kidul  plot. Some of the fallen seeds were then grown  to be wildlings. Whereas, regeneration of merbau at  ex situ conservation plot in Bondowoso was regarded as not successful

Abstract

Since the regreening project launched by presidential decree in 1976/1977 and the movement of National Land Forest Rehabilitation (GNRHL) in 2003, community forest plantation area is increasing and inclined to be more independent in their plantation management. In Wonogiri district the community forest achieve the total area of 27.433 hectare, spreaded out in 25 subdistricts. Disease on forest plantation is one of factors that causing significant risk and has to be tackled seriously. The odjective is to identify plant disease (particularly on Teak and Acacia) in community forest of Wonogiri district, Central Java. This is a preliminary study to determine further strategy in disease management. The result showed that teak plants were attacked by bacteria of Pseudomonas tectonae (Ralstonia solanacearum). While Acacia were attacked by fungi of Meliola sp., Atelocauda digitata and Oidium sp., the three fungus attacked Acacia are obligate parasitic.

Abstract

Gall rust disease infected Falcataria moluccana plantations, in several locations in East and Central Java. Effort to eradicate the disease using fungicidal treatment not effective at operational scale. One of the techniques to solve the problem is to develop rust resistant genotypes by selecting tolerant individuals in the field. Kediri is the area where the gall rust disease was found with high level invasion therefore the selection was conducted. The research area is a provenance and progeny trial which was established using 6 replications or blocks, each block contained 77 families, (37 families are collected from Candiroto, 20 from Kediri, 15 from Lombok and 5 from Papua). Result from the data analysis found that individuals from several provenances of Waga-waga, Kuaulu; Muai, Wamena; Hubikosi; Muliama Bawah, Asologoima of Papua, Irian Jaya appeared to be more tolerant to the gall rust diseases than others.
