Abstract

The objective of the study is to develop the concept mapping strategy to improve the reading ability of the second semester students at College of Islamic Studies Ma’arif (STAI) Metro–Lampung. A classroom action research was conducted in twocycles each comprising planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. Observationsheet, field notes, interview, and test were used during the observation of each cycle. Thefindings of the study revealed that the concept mapping strategy that involves the use ofconcept mapping format to be filled in based on the comprehension from a Reading text has successfully improved the Reading ability of the second semester students of the English Department at STAI Ma’arief Metro Lampung. The success is indicated by thestudents’ improvement in reading scores and in the improvement of joyful learning interaction. The students enjoyed learning reading using concept mapping and found concept mapping helpful. All the students got above the passing score 60 in Cycle 2.

Abstract

Abstract: Teaching English writing for the students of junior high school level needs high creativity, the students have to be encouraged to study hard to gain writing competence. Additionally, the students themselves face many problems: the lack of vocabulary and poor knowledge of grammar. The objective of the study is to improve the students’ writing ability using RAFT strategy employing classroom action research (CAR) design involving two cycles, three meetings each. The observation to see the result of the implementation used questionnaire, observation checklist, writing test and field notes. The expected criteria of success were that all the students achieve the minimum passing grade 55 and 75% of them involve actively in the implementation of the RAFT strategy. Thirty students of grade 8 of MTs Salafiyah Syafiiyah Babakan Ciwaringin Cirebon West Java participated in the study. The finding shows the implementation of RAFT strategy was successful to improve the students’ writing ability. All the students achieved the score at least 55 and 74.24% of them actively involved in the process of teaching and learning.  Key Words: RAFT strategy, improve, writing, ability.

Abstract

Based on the needs analysis stage, it is found that the existing speaking materials do not employ character building aspects as demanded by the curriculum.Therefore, new speaking materials that incorporate character building aspects need to be developed. Research and Development (R&D) by Borg and Gall (1983)was used in this research involving the needs analysis, material development, expert validation, try-out, and final product.Five units with various tasks and activities which include both individual and group activities were developed containing the topics ofFriendship, Speak Up, Making Telephone Call,Share Your Story, and Indonesian Folktales. The researchers adopted the task-based and project-based learning principles. Particular aspects of character building were chosen based on the activities to be done by the students so that the students will be aware that they learnmoral values during the lesson. To help the English teachersthis materials provides teacher’s guide so that the teacher knows what s/he should do to teach character building aspects. After being validated by two education experts and tried out, the product is considered appropriate and acceptable to be taught to eight graders at SMPN 3 Batu.

Abstract

This study is aimed to develop English course-book for second grade of kindergarten. The method used in this study is Research and Development (R&D). The steps of this study consist of needs analysis, material development, expert validation, first revision, try out, second revision, and final product. The result of this study indicates that the developed product is applicable for young learners. Additionally, the product is attractive and fun to be used.Penelitian ini bertujuan mengembangkan buku pelajaran Bahasa Inggris bagi siswa tingkat dua Taman Kanak-kanak. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Research and Development (R&D). Langkah-langkah yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini melingkupi analisis kebutuhan, pengembangan materi, validasi ahli, revisi pertama, uji coba, revisi kedua, dan hasil produk. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa produk yang telah dikembangkan mudah digunakan oleh pembelajar usia dini. Sebagai tambahan, produk ini juga menarik dan menyenangkan.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of mind mapping as a strategy in generating ideas before writing on the EFL students? idea development in argumentative writing as perceived from their gender differences and learning styles. By conducting an experimental investigation at university level in Indonesia, two existing TOEFL classes at the State Islamic Studies (STAIN) in Kediri were selected by a lottery to group 1: using linear notes (N=41), and group 2: using mind mapping (N=41). For analyzing the data, Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were utilized by using students? TOEFL score as the covariate variable. The result findings indicated that there is no significant difference on the students? idea developments in writing between the control and the experimental groups. These result also revealed that there is no significant difference on the students? idea development in writing between gender differences, and among the students? learning styles. Furthermore, there is no significant interaction between treatment and gender differences, and there is no significant interaction between treatment and learning styles.
