Abstract

Abstract The problem of this study was “Is it significantly effective to use pictures to improve students’ speaking skill to the sixth semester students of English Education Study Program at STKIP PGRI Lubuklinggau?”. This study was conducted to find out whether it is significantly effective to use pictures to improve students’ speaking skill. There were two hypotheses; null hypotheses (H0) and alternative hypotheses (Ha). The sample of the study was 23 students which were taken through cluster random sampling. Research method of this study was pre-experimental with one group pre-test and post-test design. The writer used speaking test and analyzed the data by using conversion of score range, individual score, and match t-test. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found out that students’ average score in the pre-test was 46.43 and post-test was 60.54. Finally, the results of matched t-test calculation shows that the t-obtain was higher than t-table. The t-obtained was 31.37 while the t-table was 1.717. It means that the null hypotheses (Ho) was rejected and automatically the alternative hypotheses (Ha) was accepted. It can be concluded that it is significantly effective to teach speaking skill by using pictures. Keywords: Effectiveness, Speaking, Picture

Abstract

This research was conducted to answer a question of : “ Is it effective using Buzz Group Technique (BGT) in teaching Reading comprehension?” Therefore, this research aimed to find out whether or not it was effective using Buzz Group Technique (BGT) in teaching Reading. The pre – experimental was applied in this research. The population was all the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri H. Wukirsari which consisted of 120 students. The sample was taken through cluster random sampling. There were 26 students from VIII E class as sample. The data were analyzed through four technique; (1) individual score, (2) Conversion of individual score based on Minimum Mastery Criteria (MMC), (3) Normality testing, and 4) Matched t-test. The result of this study were (1) the average score in pre-test was 39.84, (2) the average score in the post-test was 75.23, and (3) the result matched t-test was 8.098, which higher than 1.708 t-table.The critical value of 95% with degree of freedom (df) = 25 (26-1) significant level was 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Finally, it was efective to use Buzz Group Technique (BGT) in teaching reading comprehension.

The subject of this research was eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 13 Lubuklinggau. This strategy was applied by using pre-experimental method with one group pretest-posttest design. The total population was 110 students and sample of the research was 28 students. The data was collected through test in the form of multiple choice which consisted of 25 test items. The data was analyzed by using four techniques : 1) Students’ individual score, 2) Minimum mastery criteria, 3) Normality testing and 4) Pairedt-test calculation. The result of the research showed that students’ mean score in the pre-test was 64.00 while students’ mean score in the post-test was 76.00. Finally, the result of paired t-test was 11.43 which was higher than 1.703. It showed clearly that the null hypotheses (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypotheses (Ha) was accepted. It can be concluded that Concept Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) Strategy was effective in teaching reading comprehension to secondary education level students at SMP Negeri 13 Lubuklinggau.
