Abstract

Introduction: Apatite carbonate material plays an important role in bone tissue regeneration. The use of this membrane is expected to achieve better treatment success than those without additional therapy. The antimicrobial content in the apatite carbonate membrane can be used to support periodontal treatment of chronic periodontitis after scaling and root planing. The purpose of this research was to analyse the effect of carbonate apatite membrane gelatin application on the IL-1? level of the gingival crevicular fluid in chronic periodontitis patients. Methods: This research was a double-blind, randomised controlled trial method, with purposive sampling, and split-mouth design. The parameter was the IL-1? level in the gingival crevicular fluid before and after scaling and root planing. Carbonate apatite membrane gelatin was applied to the periodontal pocket on the test group after scaling and root planing. Data were analysed by the Wilcoxon test with a p-value < 0.05. Results: The reduction of IL-1? level gingival crevicular fluid on day-0 and day-30 on both groups showed significant value (p < 0.001). However, it showed no significant differences statistically, between the test group and the control group. Conclusion: Carbonate apatite membrane gelatin application might reduce the IL-1? level of the gingival crevicular fluid, but not showing a better reduction from the control group.Keyword: Carbonate apatite membrane gelatin, IL-1?, periodontal therapy

Abstract

Introduction: The bacteria that cause the occurrence of pathogens of periodontal disease are gram negative anaerobes. These bacteria include Pophyromonas Gingivalis and Actinobacillus Actinomycetemcomitans. Mangosteen skin extract is known to have anti-inflammatory, anti microbial, and anti oxidant properties. The extract of the mangosteen peel is altered in gel preparation in order to streamline its clinical application in periodontal disease. The purpose of this study was to examine the antibacterial power of the ginger mangosteen tree extract gel against Pophyromonas gingivalis and Actinobacillus Actinomycetemcomitans (Aggregatibacter Actinomycetemcomitans). Methods: This research was conducted by experimental laboratory. Mangosteen fruit extract gel with concentration of 100%, 50%, 25%, 12,5%, 6,25%, 3,125% and 0,78% were tested against Pophyromonas Gingivalis and Aggregatibacter Actinomycetemcomitans with agar diffusion method. Results: The results of this study indicate that for Actinobacilus Aggregatibacter bacteria minimal inhibitory concentration at a concentration of 6.25% with a diameter of 13,5mm inhibition. Minimal bactericidal concentration at 12,5% concentration with 14,7mm inhibitory diameter. In the test of Pophyromonas Gingivalis bacteria, minimal inhibitory concentrations were obtained at a concentration of 1.56% and a minimum bactericidal concentration was obtained at a concentration of 3.125%. Conclusion: The conclusion that mangosteen peel skin gel extract can inhibit bacterial growth and is bactericidal against Pophyromonas Gingivalis and Actinobacillus Actinomycetemcomitans (Aggregatibacter Actinomycetecomitans).

Abstract

Introduction: HCl tetracycline has been used as adjunctive therapy in surgical flap for chronic periodontitis. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of tetracycline HCl 25 mg as an adjunctive therapy in surgical flap to reduce pocket depth and gingival inflammation. Methods: Subjects are divided into 2 groups, surgical flap group with tetracycline HCl 25 mg and surgical flap only. Measurements of pocket depth and gingival inflammation were taken in first condition and 1 month after treatment. Result: flap surgical treatment with a tetracycline Hcl 25 mg given topically provides better results for pocket depth and gingival inflammation in patients with chronic periodontitis. Pocket measurements and gingival inflammation 1 month after surgery compared with early conditions showed significant differences (p = 0.00 and p = 0.00). Conclusion: Based on our study it was found that the use of tetracycline HCl 25 mg topically has a better influence in reducing pocket depth and gingival inflammation in chronic periodontitis.

Abstract

Introduction: Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease that attacks the periodontal tissue comprises the gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum and alveolar bone caused mainly by plaque bacteriophage or other specific dominant type of bacteria. The purpose of this study was to determine the therapeutic effect of clinical application of mangosteen peel extract gel as adjunctive therapy scaling and root planing in patients with chronic periodontitis. This research was expected to developed new treatment in the field of dentistry, particularly in periodontics, which can be used as supporting material for the treatment of chronic periodontitis. Methods: Quasi-experimental research, split mouth, with as many as 14 chronic periodontitis patients. Mangosteen rind was prepared to be formed into extract gel, dried at room temperature, then the dried samples were macerated by using ethanol, then evaporated and decanted for 3 days until obtained condensed extract. The samples were patients with chronic periodontitis in at least 2 teeth with pockets ≥ 5 mm. Clinical parameters of pocket depth, gingival bleeding, and clinical epithelial attachment level were measured at baseline and 1 month after treatment. Analysis of data using the t-test. Results: The comparison of average gap ratio of pockets depth, gingival index, gingival bleeding and epithelium attachment levels, before and after treatment showed significant differences, such as in the test and control sides. Conclusion: The mangosteen rind gel as adjunctive therapy for scaling and root planing is able to reduce pockets depth, gingival index, and gingival bleeding, and improve clinical epithelial attachment.

Abstract

The change of hormonal condition is a systemic condition that affected the periodontium condition. Oral contraceptives is one of the systemic risk that can change hormonal condition. The purpose of the research was to evaluate gingival condition of oral contraceptives users and to find the difference of gingival condition between users and non users of oral contraceptives at Desa Hegarmanah, Kecamatan Jatinangor. The research method was descriptive analytic with purposive sampling, consist of 69 users and 30 non users of oral contraceptives. The gingival condition was scored by using Loe and Sillnes gingival index. The research showed that the average of gingival index in oral contraceptives users was 1.913 and non users was 1.707. The statistic analysis was U Mann Whitney non parametric test and the α was 5% showed that there was a significant difference of gingival condition between users and non users of oral contraceptives. The conclusion of the research was the gingival condition of oral contraceptives users was different with non users at Desa Hegarmanah Kecamatan Jatinangor but clinically was the same, that is in moderate gingivitis category.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to get the description of gingival condition and oral hygiene in patients with the fixed orthodontic appliance at Orthodontics Specialist Clinic of Oral and Dental Hospital Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Padjadjaran (RSGM FKG UNPAD) Bandung. This descriptive study with a survey method included 30 patients with fixed orthodontic appliances consist of 8 male and 22 females. The sample collected by purposive sampling. The data was collected based on filling questioner forms and clinical examination with an assessed degree of gingival enlargement by Carranza assessed Gingival Index by Loe and Silness, measured pocket depth, and assessed Plaque Index by Silness and Loe. The result showed that 90% of samples had gingival enlargement with variants of gingival enlargement degree from grade 1, 2, 3 and mostly present in the posterior area. Prevalence of gingivitis was 100% divided into 76.67% suffering mild gingivitis and 23.33% suffering moderate gingivitis. In an examination of pocket depth, 6.67% had 1.1-2 mm of pocket depth; 70% had 2.1-3 mm of pocket depth, and 23.33% had 3.1-4 mm. In an examination of oral hygiene, 43.33% had good oral hygiene; 46.67% had moderate oral hygiene, and 10% had poor oral hygiene. The conclusion of this research was the orthodontics wearer suffering from gingival enlargement and mild gingivitis.

Abstract

Periodontal disease has very complex and multi factor etiology. Plaque bacteria is the main cause of periodontal disease and another risk factor that also plays a role is a smoking habit. Cigarette product such as nicotine can influence the development of periodontal disease that can directly and systemically damage the function of PMN cell. The research was conducted by taking a clinical examination on the smoking influence that covers the number of cigarettes and the period of smoking, and kind of cigarette to the worse of periodontal disease, and by measuring the epithelial attachment loss and the bleeding index. The research was conducted to 152 male aged 20-45 years old, comprised 80 smokers and 72 nonsmokers at the Clinic of Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Indonesia, Jakarta. The result of the research showed that smoking gave influence on the worse of the periodontal disease. There was a profound relationship between the smoking period and the number of cigarettes consumed everyday indicated by the epithelial attachment loss. Smoking did not enhance gingival bleeding. The relationship between kinds of cigarette and the gingival bleeding score and the epithelial attachment loss did not show a significant bleeding.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a systemic condition that affected the periodontium condition. The purpose of the research was to find the difference of the gingival condition between diabetes mellitus and nondiabetes mellitus patient on children at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) Jakarta. The research method was descriptive comparative. The sample consists of 20 children with diabetes mellitus and 20 children nondiabetes mellitus used purposive sampling. The gingival condition was scored by using Loe and Silness Gingival Index. The research showed that the average of the gingival index in diabetes mellitus children was 1.1250 and nondiabetes mellitus was 0.9562. The statistic analysis was t-Test and the α was 5% showed that there was a significant difference gingival condition between diabetes mellitus patient and nondiabetes mellitus patient on children. Conclusion showed a difference gingival condition between diabetes mellitus patient with nondiabetes mellitus patient on children at RSCM Jakarta, the gingival condition of diabetes mellitus patient on children was more severe than nondiabetes mellitus patient.

Abstract

Pendahuluan: Periodontitis kronis menyebabkan perbedaan kadar ion kalium dan natrium pada saliva karena terjadinya perpindahan ion- ion tersebut dari cairan intraseluler dan ekstraseluler sel dan jaringan yang mengalami peradangan menuju saliva. Tujuan penelitian ini bertujuan untuk  mengetahui perbedaan kadar kalium dan natrium pada saliva pasien periodontitis kronis dan pasien tanpa periodontitis kronis. Metode: Penelitian deskriptif analitik, subjek penelitian sebanyak 30 pasien, terdiri dari 15 pasien periodontitis kronis dan 15 pasien tanpa periodontitis kronis. Pengukuran poket periodontal dan pengambilan saliva menggunakan spitting method serta pengukuran kadar kalium dan natrium saliva dalam satuan mmol/L menggunakan spektrofotometer AAS. Data diuji secara statistik menggunakan uji t independent sample test. Hasil: rata-rata kadar kalium dan natrium pada pasien periodontitis kronis (18,22 mmol/L dan 9,92 mmol/L), sedangkan pada pasien tanpa periodontitis kronis (16,54 mmol/L dan 6,95 mmol/L). Tidak terdapat perbedaan signifikan kadar kalium saliva pasien periodontitis kronis dan pasien tanpa periodontitis kronis (p=0,351), dan terdapat perbedaan signifikan kadar natrium pada saliva pasien periodontitis kronis dan pasien tanpa periodontitis kronis (p=0,004). Simpulan: Kadar natrium pada saliva pasien periodontitis kronis lebih tinggi dibandingkan pasien tanpa periodontitis. ABSTRACTIntroduction: Chronic periodontitis causes differences in potassium and sodium ion levels in saliva due to the transfer of these ions from intracellular and extracellular fluid cells and tissues that experience inflammation into saliva. The aim of this study was to determine differences in potassium and sodium levels in the saliva of chronic periodontitis patients and patients without chronic periodontitis. Methods: A descriptive analytic study conducted towards 30 patients, consisting of 15 chronic periodontitis patients and 15 patients without chronic periodontitis. Measurement of periodontal pockets and saliva retrieval using spitting method and measurement of salivary potassium and sodium levels in mmol / L using AAS spectrophotometer. Data were statistically tested using independent sample test t test. Results: The average potassium and sodium levels in chronic periodontitis patients (18.22 mmol / L and 9.92 mmol / L), whereas in patients without chronic periodontitis (16.54 mmol / L and 6.95 mmol / L) . There were no significant differences in potassium saliva levels of chronic periodontitis patients and patients without chronic periodontitis (p = 0.351), and there were significant differences in sodium levels in the saliva of chronic periodontitis patients and patients without chronic periodontitis (p = 0.004). Conclusion: Sodium levels in the saliva of chronic periodontitis patients are higher than patients without periodontitis.Keywords: Potassium, sodium, chronic periodontitis, saliva.

Abstract

The primary etiologic agent of gingival disease was dental plaque which also involving the oral hygiene. The oral hygiene can be affected by individuals knowledge, attitude, practice, environment, and others. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between oral hygiene and gingival condition of Malaysian students. The type of this study was cross-sectional study. The study was conducted on a total of 66 Malaysian students. The data were collected by using an examination form and clinical examination using the Loe & Sillness gingival index followed by the Loe & Sillness plaque index. The results showed that 100% of students have gingivitis with the gingival index average of 1.25 and the plaque index average of 1.85. The relationship of gingival and plaque index was analyzed by using Spearman’s Rank Correlation Coefficient test, and the score was 0.623. It is concluded that the oral hygiene status of Malaysian students was in the fair category, and all Malaysian students had a moderate gingivitis. Also, there was a relationship between the oral hygiene status and gingival condition of Malaysian students.
