Abstract

The paper aims to explore the potential of the blended learning approach for higher education in Aceh. This is a conceptual paper that attempts to provide the concepts and theories associated with implementing the blended learning approach on college-level students and lecturers. Blended Learning is a learning model that is enriched with traditional learning methods and online education materials. In a typical blended learning environment, students may learn contents outside of the class through websites or Learning Management Systems (LMSs), but engage in practical, hands-on activities during class hours. The author believes the blended learning is a potentially effective approach if implemented for higher education in Aceh, especially Banda Aceh, which has adequate internet access in numerous areas. Integrating the blended learning approach will enhance students’ self-paced learning in Aceh, and in turn improve their critical thinking and collaborative learning. This study also encourages lecturers in Aceh to implement the blended learning approach in their teaching and learning practices, as well as urges the use of various LMSs or Web 2.0 tools as online learning platforms. Finally, the practice of blended learning will support Universities in Aceh in transforming teaching and learning activities from being traditional, to becoming technology-based learning environments.

Abstract

This study proposes to present a sample design of a flipped learning instructional model for teaching Islamic Studies course at an Indonesian higher education institution. A bottom-up flipped learning model was developed in this study, based on Bloom’s taxonomy of educational objectives. A Learning Management System (LMS), Schoology, was employed as a platform to share pre-class video lectures for student learning activities outside-of-class. Three main activities proposed by the researchers outside of the class activities, namely, Watching, Summarizing, and Note-taking (WSN), whereas give and take conversation is the main class activity. This study implies that the bottom-up flipped learning model could potentially be implemented for teaching Islamic studies course in Indonesian higher education institutions, with the aim of fostering students' highest level of cognitive domains and independent learning skills. This study has implications for the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (RISTEKDIKTI) and the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (MORA) or policymakers to consider the flipped classroom as a contemporary teaching model for teaching Islamic studies course and other subjects at any in Indonesian higher education institutions.

Abstract

Traditional learning instruction puts students in a passive learning role such as listening to lectures in the classroom. One of the contemporary innovative instructional approaches is the "flipped classroom", which employs pre-class video-recorded lectures and critical in-class discussion. This instruction leads students to remember and understand the pre-class content or access videos before attending the class. In this study, we proposed the flipped learning model design in which relevant to the Indonesian Political Systems course. This preliminary study employed Research-Based Design as a methodological approach in collecting rigorous information from two experts in the field of educational technology and pedagogy. The study was conducted within several phases, namely: planning, designing, formative evaluation, revision, redesign, and summative evaluation. The finding of this study reveals that two activities are recommended to be applied for students before class (lower-order thinking skills)and the other four activities are practiced in the classroom (higher-order thinking skills). This study can be summarized that the employment of flipped-class instruction may potentially lead to independent learning and critical thinking skills. Besides, this study also becomes a recommendation for the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (Ristekdikti) to consider the flipped classroom as a contemporary teaching-learning conception in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

As an agricultural country, attention to the welfare of farmers in Indonesia is considered very strategic. One of the measuring tools for farmers? welfare that is used today is Farmer?s Exchange Rate (FER). This study aims to examine and explore some of the problems with the exchange rate experienced by farmers, including; Farmer?s Exchange Rate (FER) in identifying the welfare of farmers, determining the increase and decrease of Farmer Exchange Rate (FER) in Indonesia; and the potential of Islamic financing in providing solutions for the welfare of farmers. The results show that the increase in FER is not always good. Determination of the increase and decrease rice farmers? exchange rates are productivity, grain prices, prices of consumer goods, and prices of fertilizers, the exchange rate of farmers on food and nonfood consumption, and production costs. Shariah schemes can be used as a new alternative to help the interest-free and profit-sharing agricultural sector.

Abstract

This study aims to provide the design of the flipped learning instructional model for teaching Indonesian Political System course at an Indonesian higher education institution. A bottom-up of flipped learning model based on Blooms? taxonomy of cognitive domain was developed. Social media WhatsApp group was employed as a platform to share the recorded YouTube video lectures for students? learning activities outside-of-class. Before students attend class, they have prepared with the lesson?s content, hence in-class activities are utilized for homework, hands-on activities, and group discussions. In other words, watching, summarizing, and note-taking are the main activities proposed by a researcher outside of the classroom, whereas Socratic questioning through a group discussion is the main activities in the classroom. This study suggests that the bottom-up of flipped learning model is potentially implemented for teaching any social studies course at any higher education institution, with the aim of promoting students? highest level of cognitive domains or higher-order thinking skills. This study has implications for Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Ristekdikti) or policymaker to determine the flip-class pedagogy as a contemporary teaching model for teaching any course in Indonesian higher education.
