Abstract

Waters of the southearn of Makassar Strait is a region which relatively rich of organic matter because thephenomenon of upwelling along the eastern season. The purpose of this research was to analyze the distributionpatterns and the development of upwelling areas in the southern of Makassar Strait. This study used chlorophylladata and sea surface temperature from level 1 of Modis image for two years (2009 and 2010). The resultshowed that phenomenon of upwelling that occurs in the southern Makassar Strait appears since early June, thestrongest upwelling in August and disapear in October. The upwelling was indicated by declining of sea surfacetemperature and increasing of chlorophyll-a concentration. Analysis of wind direction and speed indicate thatthe upwelling occurs in the southern Makassar strait spread to southwest with and estimated upwelling areaaround 46.000 km2.Keywords: upwelling, Makassar Strait, chlorophyll-a, sea surface temperature.

Abstract

Temperature and availability nutrients played an important role on growth and lipid production of microalgae. In this study, we examined the effect of increasing suhu and excessed and depleted NO3 on growth rate, biomass and free fatty acid concentration in the Spirulina sp and Skeletonema sp. Two microalgae were culture on Conway and Milne media for 21 days using continuous culture technique. There were four temperature treatments, such as 28oC, 30oC, 32oC and 34oC and three nutrient treatments, which were control nutrient treatment, without NO3 and two times NO3 concentrations from control treatments with three replicates for each treatments. Results found that increasing temperature significantly affected on biomass and concentration free fatty acid, meanwhile nutrient treatments affected on growth rate, biomass and concentration of organic Carbon. In general, increasing temperature was more affected on Spirulina sp in terms of increasing growth rate, biomass and free fatty acid concentration. However, Skeletonema sp was more responsive to availability of NO3 in the media culture for increasing free fatty acid, and percentage of free fatty acid per dry weight.

Abstract

Environment-Based Learning: a Strategy for Elementary Students Awareness and Concern on Mangrove Ecosystem at Lakkang, Tallo of MakassarAbstract. Mangrove ecosystem are one ecosystem that has important ecological and economic functions for the community. The area of mangrove in Lakkang Village, Makassar, is experiencing continuous degradation due to logging to be converted into ponds and residents area. Awareness to protect the environment as a place to live and a source of community life requires a process that must begin at a young age. Community Service Activities are carried out in the Lakkang Village for class IV and V elementary school students using active-demonstrative teaching methods with stages of activities including: conveying knowledge of the environment of mangrove ecosystems with reading and playing competitions with media images about various types of mangroves and their associated biota and demonstrations mangrove planting. The results of this activity indicate that early childhood in the Lakkang Village requires a form of learning local content about the introduction of the environment, especially mangrove ecosystems. This could be seen from the lack of students' knowledge about the role of mangrove ecosystems for the environment. However, students' interest and enthusiasm were very high in participating in this mangrove ecosystem introduction activity. In addition to delivering the material, mangrove planting activities were also carried out. The results of this activity showed that students were able to understand the mangrove planting procedures delivered by the implementation team. It also showed from the ability of students to plant their own mangroves. However, the results of monitoring showed that mangrove planted by students were not entirely able to survive due to environmental factors. Therefore it is necessary to anticipate steps for subsequent planting activities, namely the need to make a fence and barrier at the planting location to reduce the impact of fishing gear installation by fishermen and waves from ships passing around the planting area.Keywords: Class IV and V elementary school children, mangroves, mangrove planting, Lakkang VillageAbstrak. Ekosistem mangrove merupakan salah satu ekosistem yang memiliki fungsi ekologis dan ekonomis yang penting bagi masyarakat. Luasan mangrove di Kelurahan Lakkang, Makassar mengalami degradasi secara terus menerus karena kegiatan penebangan untuk dikonversi menjadi lahan tambak dan pemukiman. Kesadaran untuk menjaga lingkungan sebagai tempat bermukim dan sumber kehidupan masyarakat membutuhkan proses yang harus dimulai sejak usia muda. Kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat ini dilaksanakan di Kelurahan Lakkang untuk siswa kelas IV dan V SD dengan  menggunakan metode pengajaran aktif-demonstratif dengan tahapan kegiatan meliputi: penyampaian pengetahuan lingkungan ekosistem mangrove dengan lomba membaca dan bermain dengan media gambar tentang ragam jenis mangrove dan biota asosiasinya serta demonstrasi penanaman mangrove. Hasil dari kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa anak usia dini di Kelurahan Lakkang membutuhkan bentuk pembelajaran muatan local  mengenai pengenalan lingkungan khususnya  ekosistemmangrove. Hal ini terlihat dari kurangnya pengetahuan siswa tentang peran ekosistem mangrove bagi lingkungan, namun minat dan antusias siswa sangat tinggi dalam mengikuti kegiatan pengenalan ekosistem mangrove ini. Selain penyampaian materi, dilakukan juga kegiatan penanaman mangrove, hasil kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa siswa mampu memahami prosedur penanaman mangrove yang disampaikan oleh tim pelaksana, hal ini terlihat dari kemampuan siswa dalam menanam anakan mangrovenya masing-masing. Namun, hasil monitoring menunjukkan bahwa anakan mangrove yang ditanam oleh siswa tidak seluruhnya dapat bertahan hidup dikarenakan oleh faktor lingkungan. Oleh karena itu perlu langkah antisipatif untuk kegiatan-kegiatan penanaman berikutnya, yaitu perlu dibuatkan pagar pembatas dan barrier di lokasi penanaman untuk mengurangi dampak dari pemasangan alat tangkap oleh nelayan maupun hempasan gelombang dari kapal yang melintas di sekitar area penanaman.Kata Kunci: Anak kelas IV dan V SD, mangrove, penanaman mangrove, Kelurahan Lakkang
