Abstract

Printed wedding invitations have been one of the most crucial aspects in the social organization among many countries like Brunei Darussalam, Iran, Egypt, and Persia. Javanese people also pay special attention to this social document as it represents social class, social status, prestige, and fnancial support allocated by the host. Evolution of printed Javanese wedding invitations represent social and economic pressures. The diasporic communities who were absent to earn a living brought a noticeable change by setting up the bride?s parents? photographs in the invitations. 15 invitation texts were selected ranging from 1980 ? 2017 used in Tawangmangu, Wonogiri and Sukoharjo, the eastern part of Central Java, Indonesia. There was a consistent regularity in terms of rhetorical structure. Functionally, the invitations have the same role of inviting prospective guests to share happiness in a more family-bound relationship. Inclusion of parents? photographs, map of the location, pre-wedding photos, wise words, calendar, the profle of the couple were indicators of transformation taking place. Later, the printing decision of the invitations is pretty much customer-driven informed by the customers? needs, values, and beliefs. Rhetorically the materialistically-driven social phenomenon was shown by an explicit gifts desired.

Abstract

This article explores how verbal violence on Facebook was performed by the users. It investigates the discursive strategy exploited by them. The data of verbal violence were taken from user comments to news update posted on Indonesian news portal fans pages under the topic of Paris tragedy. The comments were taken from four different Indonesian news fans pages, namely Detik.com, Kompas.com, Liputan6.com and Tribunnews.com. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively. Applying Discourse Historical Approach (DHA) proposed by Wodak, the result shows that the users exploits three strategies to perform verbal violence namely referential strategy, predicative strategy and argumentation strategy. Employing referential strategy, verbal violence is realized in the form of noun and noun phrase, which functions as subject, object and modifier of noun phrase. Employing predicative strategy, verbal violence is realized in the form of word, phrase and clause, which function as attribute or predicate. Employing argumentation strategy, verbal violence is realized in the form of sentence and discourse.

Abstract

Abstract: YouTube resources have contributed significantly to the language learning especial- ly for multimodal literacies including listening and pronunciation. By using different kinds of mode, learners are exposed to more natural and received pronunciation of audiovisual texts in English. Minimal pairs, word transition, intonation, word stress combined with facial expres- sions, body language, eye contact, pose, pictures, photographs, musical instrument as back- grounding illustration have been a rich multimodal source to activate students? awareness on how meaning-making efforts are not solely constructed verbally. In a more complex digitalized world, technology has provided a more natural setting of communication that students need to be aware of and make use to substitute the limited availability of native speakers especially in remote areas of extended Indonesian archipelago. Keywords: YouTube, multimodal literacies, minimal pairs, word transition, pose.

Abstract

Background: This study aims to explain the way appraisal resources in the political text are mediated in the translation. The exploitation of appraisal resources in the source text would determine the pattern used by text speakers in realizing text’s purposes while anticipating and controlling the effect after these purposes are achieved. Furthermore, these evaluations are translated using various translation techniques, which would determine the quality as well as translators’ interference and distortion in balancing the text’s purposes and its aftermath. Methods: This descriptive qualitative study include the source of data that are four transcripts of press conference and media release from Australian government regarding Chan and Sukumaran’s executions in English, and the translation in Bahasa Indonesia. There are 349 data of appraisal resources divided into solidarity and alignment expressions, selected through purposive sampling. Data were then classified into the respective appraisal categories, identified by the translation techniques, and analyzed to find the relation with the translation quality. Results: Majority of translation techniques used in solidarity expressions are Established Equivalent, Borrowing, and Literal that keep most of appraisal categories equivalent to those in the source text; while in alignment expressions are Established Equivalent, Reduction, and Modulation resulting in more deviations in the target text. Conclusion: Interference and distortion are used by translators, consciously or not, to realize text’s goals while minimizing the aftermaths of negative evaluations. Keywords:       appraisal, translation technique, translation quality, solidarity, alignment, interference, distortion

Abstract

This article would like to present how women were defined in the movie, both by male and female characters. Mills (1998) provides a tool to help the readers understanding the style of a writer through her choices of words, sentences, and even in the discourse level. A novel based movie which won and was nominated in several awards, The Breadwinner, was full of portrayal of women in the setting of Afghanistan under the Taliban rule. The tragic story was beautifully wrapped under the animated movie produced to show the real picture towards the world. The data are in the form of words, sentences and discourse spoken by male and female characters that represent the depiction of women. The data obtained are examined with the view of Sara Mills theory. It is found that in the movie, the women are represented as two opposing aspects: women representation as an object of man domination, and women as the subject who is able to speak out her mind and to decide independently.DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/ijhs.2018.020105
