Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this research is to find out what type of motivation that first semester students of English Study Program FKIP UR have in learning English. This is a descriptive research that has only one variable applied. In conducting this research, there was 1 class selected with total sample is 40 students, using clustering sampling technique. A set of questionnaire was used to collect the data adapted from AMTB (Attitude/Motivation Test Battery) designed by Gardner (1985). The result of the students’ questionnaire responses shows a percentage score of 97.5% for intrinsic motivation and 92.5% for extrinsic motivation indicating that the students are motivated by their internal and external desire. The results show that they study English because they want to improve their English language skills and also want to use their English for their career.Key Words: Motivation, Learning English

Abstract

Abstract : The objectives of this study are to observe what types of code-mixing and the linguistic features of English lexical items of code-mixing used in the headlines of economic-business issues in local newspapers. The study was conducted from March to April 2018 by using mixed method which combines both descriptive qualitative and quantitative method. Findings reports that the most dominant types of code-mixing used are intra-sentential code-mixing (93%) followed by involving a change of pronunciation (5%), and intra-lexical code-mixing (2%). The most dominant the linguistic feature of English lexical items of code-mixing used are proper noun (54.32%) followed by common noun (19.14%), abbreviation (14.20%), adjectives (6.17%), verb (3.09%), prefix (1.85%) and adverb (1.23%).Keyword : Sociolinguistics, Code-Mixing, Headlines

Abstract

Abstrack: This study seeks to explore the form of code mixing and lexical categories which are often exploited in the entertainment corners of local newspapers in Pekanbaru. It was conducted from January 2018 to July 2018. Qualitative reasearch and descriptive analysis method were applied in this study. The finding discovers that the forms of code mixing which had been observed in the entertainment corner are the insertion of words and hybrid. It also finds out that mostly 54.84% of English lexical categories have been code mixed into the entertainment corner of local newspapers in Pekanbaru were nouns. Therefore, the researcher confirms that there are some code mixing used by journalist into the entertainment corner of local newspaper in Pekanbaru.Keywords: Analysis, Code-Mixing, Entertainment Corner, Local Newspaper

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to discover the effect of Inside Outside Circle Method on the speaking ability of the first year students of SMP Islam As Shofa Pekanbaru academic year 2018/2019. The sample of this research was VII 4 students which consisted of 27 students. The sample was selected by using cluster random sampling technique. This research is pre-experimental and the data were collected by means of pre-test and post-test design in the form of speaking test which focused on describing objects. The data were analyzed using five components of speaking: pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The results showed that the score of the pretest was 39,60 and the post-test was 65,58 while the difference from both scores was 25,98. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of Inside Outside Circle Method on the speaking ability of the first year students of SMP Islam As Shofa Pekanbaru. In other words, the teaching of speaking through Inside Outside Circle Method, as one of the alternative speaking activities, has an effect on the students’ speaking ability.Keywords: Inside Outside Circle Method, Speaking Ability

Abstract

Abstract : This research aimed to discover the effect of Two Stay-Two Stray (TSTS) Method on the speaking ability of the first year students of SMK Telkom Pekanbaru academic year 2018/2019. The selected sample was X TKJ-2 students which consisted of 34 students. The sample was selected by using cluster random sampling technique. This research was pre-experimental and the data were collected by means of pre-test and post-test design in the form of speaking test which focused on describing objects. The data were analyzed using five components of speaking: pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The results showed that the score of the pretest was 60.47, the post-test was 72.98 while the improvement from both scores was 12.51. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of TSTS Method on the speaking ability of the first year students of SMK Telkom Pekanbaru. In other words, the teaching of speaking by through Two Stay-Two Stray Method, as one of the alternative speaking activities, has an effect on the students’ speaking ability.Keywords: Two Stay-Two Stray Method, Speaking Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out the correlation between self-confidence and speaking ability of the second year students of English Study Program of Universitas Riau. The correlational research was used to find out the relationship between two variables. To collect the data in this research were speaking test and questionnaire. A cluster random sampling technique is used to determine the sample of the research. There were 34 students participating in this research. Oral performance was used to know the students' speaking ability and questionnaire was used to know students’ self-confidence. The result of the study shows that there was a correlation between two variables. The value of correlation coefficient was 0.349. it was on scale 0.20 – 0.399 it meant that the correlation between self-confidence and speaking ability of the second year students of English Study Program of Universitas Riau categorized as low correlation. In other words, there is other factors can influence students’ speaking ability. The finding could important distributions to both understand, self-confidence and speaking ability especially the relationship between the two variables.Key Words: Correlation, Self-Confidence, Speaking Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of usingTransition Action Details Strategy to teach writing recount texts to the second yearstudents of “SMPN 1 Sungai Apit, Siak Regency” in Academic Year 2018/2019. Thisresearch was a pre experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design.The sample of this research was VIII.I which consisted of 26 students. The technique ofdata collecting is measurement, the tool of which a written tests. The mean score of pretestwas 61.40 and the mean score of post-test was 68.53. The data calculation showedthat the value of t-test was -1.672. The values of t table on the df (degree of freedom) 25is 2.060 with the level significance (α)=5%. Then, the t-test was large than the t-tableon significant level 5%. The level significance was -1.672 < 2.060. Thus, teachingwriting ability recount texts using TAD strategy to the second year students of “SMPN 1Sungai Apit, Siak Regency” in Academic Year 2018/2019 could be categorized as “noeffect”.Key Words: Transition Action Details Strategy, Recount Texts

Abstract

Abstract: This Pre-experimental research aims to find out whether or not there is a significant effect of using Two Stay Two Stay Strategy on reading comprehension ability of the second year students of SMAN 1 Kandis. The sample of this research is 35 students of XI IPA 1 chosen by cluster random sampling. To measure the students’ reading comprehension level, pre-test and post-test in form of recount text are given before and after treatment. The results of the data analysis show that the mean score of the pre-test is 52.27 and the mean score of post-test is 79.92. It means the mean score of post-test is higher than pre-test. In addition, the value of t-obs is higher than t-table (11.66>2.03). Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of Two Stay Two Stray Strategy on reading comprehension of the second year students of SMAN 1 Kandis.Key Words: Effect, Two Stay Two Stray Strategy, Reading Comprehension, Recount Text.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed to find out whether or not there was a significant effect using Picture-Cued Storytelling Technique on the speaking ability of the third year students of SMPN 8 Pekanbaru. The research design was a re-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample was class IX-3 chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. In order to collect the data, a pre-test and post-test were administered and then the data were statistically analyzed by using the t-test formula. The result showed that the mean score of the post-test was higher than the mean score of the pre-test (51.43>47.39). The value of t-test was 11.528 while the value of t-table in significance level 5% df = 32 was 2.037. Therefore, Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and Null Hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It could be concluded that there was a significant effect of using Picture-Cued Storytelling Technique on the speaking ability of the third year students of SMPN 8 Pekanbaru.Key Words: Picture-Cued Storytelling Technique, Speaking Ability
