Abstract

The results of the Complement Fixation Test on the cytomegalovirus (CMVV) antibodies in 138 children admitted to the Gadjah Mada University Hospital revealed seropositive conversion as high as 56.6%. The percentage of seropositive was higher in older children. This investigation suggested that seroconversion in adults might play a role in CMV infection during child bearing period.

Abstract

A study of peripheral blood standard values was carried out on 100 healthy full term newborns, with normal deliveries to healthy mothers in Dr. Pirngadi Hospital Medan, comprising of 60 males and 40 females. The newborns were divided into three groups according to their birth weight. There were no significant differences of the average value of peripheral blood counts between group I, II and III neither between males and females. The average value of hemoglobin concentration with Sahli is lower than that with Cyan method, which is significantly different (p<0.00I).The average values found in this study on newborn babies of 24 hours of age with term deliveries were as follows:Hemoglobin Sahli                             :               16.13 gm %Hemoglobin Cyan                            :               17.88 gm %Leucocyles                                      :               16,512/cu mmHematocrit                                      :               56.4 %Reticulocytes                                   :               40.06 %Erythrocyte sedimentation rate           :               3.09/1st hour

Abstract

Prolonged diarrhoea is defined as diarrhoea continuing for more than 7 days from the onset of effective regrading the feeds (slightly modified after Gribbin. 1976).84 infants treated ambulatory for prolonged diarrhoea were investigated for stool pathogens, fat malabsorption (Rossipal Melhod) and sugar malabsorptio (Clinitest Method). The clinical course of the illness was also studied. The diarrhoea lasted in most of the cases between 10- 25 days. Over three quarters of the infants were aged less than 1 year.53.6% of Ihe infants excreted intestinal pathogen: path. E. coli (31%), Salmonella Sp. (17.9%), Staphylococcus aureus (10.7.%), and E. Coli aggl. neg.(1.2%).Lactse intolerance and gross fat malabsorption accounted resp. for 5% and 41.7% of infants with prolonged diarrhea.

Abstract

A case of mediastinal teraloma accompanied by patent ductus arteriosus in a 3-year and 5-month-old girl is reported. She had been suffering from fever, productive cough and dyspnea since one year. The diagnosis is made after surgery with preoperative diagnosis of encapsulated empyema and patent ductus arteriosus. This shows the difficulties to diagnose mediastinal teratoma in this age group. Post operatively, her condition is markedly improved.
