ELITE: English and Literature Journal (Print ISSN: 2355-0821, Online ISSN: 2580-5215) is a peer-reviewed journal devoted specifically to the studies of English linguistics and literature and other literatures with a special emphasis on local culture, wisdom, philosophy and identity. Published twice a year in June and December, the first edition of ELITE was published in 2013. The journal contents are managed by the English and Literature Department, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar, Indonesia. The primary objective of the journal is to provide a productive forum for lecturers, researchers, authors, graduate students, and practitioners to present results of their recent studies in the areas of English linguistics and literature and other literary traditions. The journal is also intended to help disseminate recent developments in theories, concepts, and ideas in the areas concerned to the academic community of language and literature studies in Indonesia in particular and worldwide in general.

Abstract

This study explains the correlation between the TOEFL preparation course to the improvement of the ability to speak in English of the students at UniversitasFajar Makassar. The result of this study is expected to answer the phenomenon between the ability to score at the TOEFL test and the ability to speak of the students in the TOEFL preparation course. This study is also expected to be able to produce a TOEFL preparation class teaching method which is more suitable for improving students' speaking ability. This study uses a quantitative descriptive approach, using data in the form of numbers from each measurement instrument. This study analyzes data sets from two data collection instruments; TOEFL scores and Cambridge FCE speaking test scores, taken from the same group of study subjects. The data sets from both instruments are then compared to test the level of correlation. The data analysis and presentation are compiled based on statistical calculations using the correlation research analysis. The findings of this study indicate that the TOEFL score did not significantly correlate with the improvement in the speaking ability of the subjects. The results of the TOEFL training of study subjects with low / high scores did not show a significant increase in the ability to speak even though there was a  linear relationship between the two pairs of the score. ABSTRAK Penelitian ini menjelaskan hubungan antara kursus persiapan TOEFL dengan peningkatan kemampuan berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris dari para siswa di Universitas Fajar Makassar. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat menjawab fenomena antara kemampuan untuk mendapatkan skor tinggi pada tes TOEFL dan kemampuan untuk berbicara siswa dalam kursus persiapan TOEFL. Penelitian ini juga diharapkan dapat menghasilkan metode pengajaran kelas persiapan TOEFL yang lebih mampu meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kuantitatif, menggunakan data dalam bentuk angka dari masing-masing instrument pengukuran. Penelitian ini menganalisa kumpulan data dari dua instrument pengumpulan data; Skor TOEFL dan skor tes berbicara Cambridge FCE, diambil dari kelompok studi yang sama. Set data dari kedua instrument kemudian dibandingkan untuk menguji tingkat korelasinya. Analisis dan penyajian data disusun berdasarkan perhitungan statistic menggunakan analisis penelitian korelasional. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kursus persiapan peningkatan skor TOEFL tidak berkorelasi signifikan dengan peningkatan kemampuan berbicara siswa didik. Hasil pelatihan TOEFL dari subyek penelitian dengan skor rendah/  tinggi tidak menunjukkan peningkatan yang signifikan dalam peningkatan kemampuan berbicara meskipun terdapat hubungan linier antara kedua variable pasang skor tersebut.Kata kunci: TOEFL, analisis statistik korelasi, koefisien korelasi

Abstract

A strip story is one of the techniques that could stimulate the students to speak during the learning process especially in speaking class. The aim of this study was to find out the significance difference of students’ speaking achievement after they were taught by using strip story technique. The pre experimental study was the method of the study. The one group pretest-posttest design approach was used in this study. The study was conducted to sixth semester S1 Nursing students at STIK Siti Khadijah Palembang. The population of the study was all fourth semester S1 Nursing students at STIK Siti Khadijah Palembang in 2018. The total number of the population was 69 students. The sample of the study was 22 fourth semester S1 Nursing students at STIK Siti Khadijah Palembang in 2018. Systematic sampling was used to collect the sample. The test was administered twice as pre-test and post-test. The results of the tests were analyzed by using t-test through SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) program. The result of the study showed that there was a significant difference in speaking achievement before and after applying strip story technique based on paired sample t-test. Keywords: speaking, strip story Abstrak Strip story adalah sebuah teknik yang dapat merangsang pelajar untuk berbicara selama proses pembelajaran khususnya dalam kelas Speaking. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mencari perbedaan yang signifikan dalam pencapaian kemampuan berbiacra setelah mereka diajarkan menggunakan teknik strip story. Pre-eksperimental adalah metode dalam penelitian ini. Pendekatan yang digunakan adalah one-group pre-test post-test. Penelitian ini dilakukan terhadap mahasiswa semester 6 program studi S1 Keperawatan diSTIK Siti Khadijah Palembang pada tahun 2018. Jumlah populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah 69 mahasiswa. Sampel dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 22 mahasiswa semester empat program studi S1 Keperawatan STIK Siti Khadijah Palembang tahun 2018. Teknik pengambilan sampel meggunakan teknik sistematik. Tes diberikan dua kali berupa pre-test dan post-test. hasil penelitian dianalisa menggunakan t-test dengan program SPSS. Hasil dari tes menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan dalam pencapaian kemampuan berbicara sebelum dan sesudah diterapkan strip story berdasarkan paired sample t-test.    Kata Kunci: percakapan, cerita acak

Abstract

AbstractThis research discussed about the Exercise Power of Capitol in Panem as Ambiguous Utopia City in Trilogy Hunger Games Movies such as Hunger Games, Catching Fire, Mockingjay Part I and Part II. The aims of this research were to describe the processes of Capitol created Panem as Ambiguous Utopia City and to find out the forms of Ambiguous Utopia City in Panem. This research used post- colonialism approach by Upstone’s theory which describe about post space. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. This research used note taking as the instrument in order to get the valid data. The findings showed that the borders and orders were used by Capitol to create Panem as Ambiguous Utopia City and the findings also showed that there were three city forms in Panem such as Utopia, Nowhere, and Carnival City. The researcher concluded that Capitol as the central city which became the ambiguous Utopia City.AbstrakPenelitian ini membahas tentang Latihan Kekuatan Capitol di Panem sebagai Kota Utopia yang ambigu di Trilogy Hunger Games Movies seperti Hunger Games, Catching Fire, Mockingjay Bagian I dan Bagian II. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan proses Capitol yang menciptakan Panem sebagai Kota Utopia yang ambigu dan untuk mengetahui bentuk Kota Utopia yang ambigu di Panem. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan pasca kolonialisme dengan teori Upstone yang menggambarkan tentang ruang pos. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Penelitian ini menggunakan catatan sebagai instrumen untuk mendapatkan data yang valid. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa perbatasan dan perintah digunakan oleh Capitol untuk menciptakan Panem sebagai Kota Utopia yang ambigu dan temuan tersebut juga menunjukkan bahwa ada tiga bentuk kota di Panem seperti Utopia, Nowhere, dan Carnival City. Peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa Capitol sebagai pusat kota yang menjadi Kota Utopia yang ambigu.

Abstract

This thesis is about impoliteness strategies in Peter Rabbit movie. It aims to find out the impoliteness strategies and the response of interlocutors in the movie. This study used the theory of Culpeper (1996) about the 5 strategies of impoliteness and Culpeper, et.al (2003) 4 types of impoliteness responses. The researcher utilised descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data and to describe the results of this analysis. The source of the data is Peter Rabbit movie and the script of the movie. From read, watch, check the accuracy between the movie and the script, identify characters? utterances, identify the impoliteness strategies of the utterances and identify the response of the impoliteness are the procedures of data collection. The results of this study indicate that there are 75 impoliteness strategies used by the characters in Peter Rabbit movie. The most commonly strategy used is Bald on Record strategy with total usage of 30 times. Meanwhile, Positive Impoliteness and Sarcasm or Mock Politeness were used 15 times Total usage of Negative Impoliteness is 12 times. The most rarely strategy found is Withhold Politeness with the number of usage 4 times. The response found consisted of 4 types of responses namely Accepting face attack, Offensive Countering, Defensive Countering, and No response whether it is in the form of verbal and nonverbal responses. This analysis shows that the Impoliteness Strategy in Peter Rabbit movie is quite a lot because the characteristic of the characters in the movie is classified as aggressive and active. In addition, the use of impoliteness strategies was influenced by different cultural backgrounds such as urban people and country people.ABSTRAKPenelitian ini tentang strategi ketidaksopanan di dalam film Peter Rabbit. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan stratgei ketidaksopanan dan respons lawan bicara yang ada di dalam film. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori Culpeper (1996) tentang 5 strategi ketidaksopanan dan teori Culpeper dan temannya (2003) tentang 4 tipe respon ketidaksopanan. Peneliti menggunakan metode kualitatif untuk menganalisa data dan mendeskripsikan hasil dari analisis ini. Sumber data berupa film dan skrip dari Peter Rabbit. Dari membaca, menonton, mengecek keakuratan  film da skrip, mengidentifikasi percakapan-percaakapan para karakter, mengidentifikasi strategi ketidaksopanan pada percakapan  para karakter  dan mengidentifikasi respon dari pendengar merupakan prosedur dari data yang dikumpulkan. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa strategi yang paling sering di gunakan adalah strategi Bald on Record  dengan jumlah penggunaannya 30 kali. Sementara itu, Positive Impoliteness dan Sarcasm or Mock Politeness di gunakan 15 kali. Jumlah penggunaan  Negative impoliteness 12 kali. Strategi yang paling jarang di temukan adalah Withold Politeness dengan total penggunaannya 4 kali. Respons yang di temukan terdiri dari 4 tipe respons yakni Accepting face attack, Offensive Countering, Defensive Countering, and No response baik dari segi  respon verbal dan non verbal. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa strategi ketidaksopanan di dalam film Peter Rabbit cukup banyak karena sifat para karakter  di dalam film agresif dan aktif. Selain itu, penggunaan ketidaksopanan di pengaruhi oleh perbedaan latar belakang budaya seperti orang dari perkotaan dan orang dari pedesaan.Kata Kunci: Pragmatik, Strategi, Strategi Ketidaksopanan, Respons, Peter Rabbit

Abstract

Conjunctions connect words or phrases of semantic units to guide the writing and reading process. This study aimed at examining EFL learners? use of conjunctions in writing descriptive texts. This study analyzed (1) the use of conjunctions in students? descriptive texts and (2) the errors of using conjunctions. The study involved forty-four students? descriptive texts which were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive method using Halliday and Hasan?s taxonomy (1976) as well as Ong?s framework (2011). We found 417 conjunctions which are classified into additive conjunctions (71.22%), the most common conjunctions used by the students, temporal conjunctions (13.43%), adversative conjunctions (11.99%), and causal conjunctions (3.36%).The predominance of additives denotes that the students added information in describing people. Although the students use these four types of conjunctions, some conjunctions are used inappropriately. We found the errors of conjunctions: misuse errors (42.55%), unnecessary addition errors (40.43%), omission errors (8.51%), and redundant repetition (8.51%). The study of discourse markers is relevant for designing writing materials for EFL students. Teachers can help students enhance their writing through various exposures of different discourse markers with their pragmatic functions.ABSTRAK Konjungsi (kata sambung) menghubungkan kata atau frasa unit semantik untuk yang dapat memudahkan proses penulisan dan membaca. Konjungsi membantu pembaca mengaitkan satu ide ke ide berikutnya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggali penggunaan konjungsi peserta didik Bahasa Inggris dalam menulis teks deskriptif. Penelitian ini menganalisis (1) penggunaan konjungsi dalam teks deskriptif yang ditulis oleh siswa SMA dan (2) kesalahan dalam penggunaan konjungsi. Penelitian ini melibatkan empat puluh empat teks deskriptif yang dianalisis menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif menggunakan taksonomi Halliday dan Hasan (1976) serta kerangka kerja Ong (2011). Peneliti menemukan 417 konjungsi yang diklasifikasikan menjadi konjungsi aditif (71,22%), konjungsi yang paling umum digunakan oleh siswa, konjungsi temporal (13,43%), konjungsi adversatif (11,99%), dan konjungsi kausal (3,36%). Konjungsi aditif menunjukkan bahwa siswa dapat menambahkan informasi tambahan ketika mendeskripsikan orang dalam bentuk paragraf. Meskipun siswa menggunakan keempat jenis konjungsi, beberapa konjungsi digunakan secara tidak tepat. Para peneliti menemukan kesalahan, yaitu: kesalahan penyalahgunaan (42,55%), kesalahan penambahan yang tidak perlu (40,43%), kesalahan kelalaian (8,51%), dan pengulangan yang berlebihan (8,51%). Penelitian tentang penanda wacana ini relevan untuk pembelajaran keterampilan menulis. Pendidik dapat membantu siswa menggunakan konjungsi yang beragam mereka dengan memberi banyak contoh penanda wacana serta fungsi pragmatis mereka.Kata Kunci: Kata Sambung, Paragraf Deskriptif, Menulis, Analisis Kesalahan

Abstract

AbstractThis study about the communication skill of using English with tourist as native speaker based on context. In this presentation, the lecturer gives the task to the students to find the tourists to invite to communicate, in places where the context of tourist attractions. So, they are free and easy can practice their English which of course uses communication skills. The students made the group, and go together in the tourist attraction and record and take the picture with the tourist. Then students make material and mental preparations before communicating with tourists, and present their English communication results in class. Students are highly motivated in communicating with tourists as native speaker.AbstrakStudi tentang kemampuan berkomunikasi menggunakan bahasa Inggris dengan turis sebagai penutur asli berdasarkan konteks. Dalam presentasi ini, dosen memberikan tugas kepada para siswa untuk mencari wisatawan untuk diajak berkomunikasi, di tempat-tempat di mana konteks tempat wisata. Jadi, mereka bebas dan mudah bisa mempraktekkan bahasa Inggris mereka yang tentu saja menggunakan kemampuan komunikasi. Para siswa membuat kelompok tersebut, dan pergi bersama-sama di tempat wisata dan merekam dan berfoto bersama turis. Kemudian siswa membuat persiapan materi dan mental sebelum berkomunikasi dengan turis, dan mempresentasikan hasil komunikasi bahasa Inggris mereka di kelas. Siswa sangat termotivasi dalam berkomunikasi dengan wisatawan sebagai penutur asli.

Abstract

Abstract This research is aimed at finding out: (1) whether or not the use of English speech activity effects the students’ motivation for the second semester students of English Department at Universitas Sulawesi Barat and (2) whether or not the second semester students of English Department at Universitas Sulawesi Barat are interested in speaking English through English speech activity. This research applied quasi-experimental research method. The population of the research was all second semester students of English Department at Universitas Sulawesi Barat. The researcher chose class II.A as experimental group (16 students) and class II.B as control group (16 students) as sample of the research. The data of the research were collected by using two kinds of instruments, namely speaking test and questionnaire. Speaking test (interview) was used to obtain data of the students’ speaking ability and questionnaire was used to know the students interest in speaking through English speech activity. The result of data analysis showed that there was significant difference between the students’ score who were taught by using English speech activity and re-telling. It was proved by the mean score of the experimental class which was higher than control group in posttest (79.06>73.37). Based on data analysis, the researcher concluded that: the use of English speech activity can improve students’ speaking ability and make the students interested in speaking English. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan apakah: (1) penggunaan teknik pidato bahasa Inggris secara signifikan dapat mempengaruhi motivasi mahasiswa semester dua jurusan bahasa Inggris di Universitas Sulawesi Barat dan (2) mahasiswa semester dua jurusan bahasa Inggris di Universitas Sulawesi Barat tertarik belajar bahasa Inggris dengan teknik pidato bahasa Inggris.Penelitian ini menerapkan metode kuasi-eksperimental. Populasi penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester dua jurusan bahasa Inggris di Universitas Sulawesi Barat. Peneliti memilih kelas II.A sebagai grup eksperimen (16 siswa) dan II.B sebagai grup control (16 siswa) sebagai sampel penelitian. Data yang diolah dengan menggunakan dua instrumen penelitian yaitu test berbicara dan kuesioner. Test berbicara (wawancara) digunakan untuk memperoleh data kemampuan berbicara sementara kuesioner atau angket digunakan untuk menggunakan ketertarikan siswa dalam menggunakan teknik pidato bahasa Inggris.Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa prestasi belajar mahasiswa berbeda secara signifikan antara mahasiswa yang diajar dengan menggunakan teknik pidato bahasa Inggris dan re-telling. Ini ditunjukkan dengan peroleh nilai rata-rata mahasiswa kelas eksperimen lebih tinggi dari kelas control pada tes akhir (79.06>73.37). Berdasarkan analisis data diatas maka peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa: penggunaan teknik pidato bahasa Inggris dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa dan juga dapat membuat siswa tertarik belajar bahasa Inggris

Abstract

Abstract             The aim of this study is to analyze and to describe the popular culture phenomena in the novel.    The writer used sociology of literature approach to express and explain popular culture phenomena in the novel, then finding the relation between the context of the novel and the social condition in current society. The instrument which is used by the writer was note taking. Along this instrument, the writer read the novel, then taking note cards to write the popular culture expression on the novel, after that the expression is written down the writer classified the phenomena of popular culture from the novel. In this study, the writer found four popular culture phenomena in the novel. They are reality show, science fiction aspects, human competition, and heroine. Reality show has indicators, such as on screen appearance, the power of people’s support, planned dramas, and great prize availability. Next, two aspects of science fiction are world destruction and extraordinary creatures. Human competition has characteristics, e.g. survival, strategy, alliance, and losing. Then, the indicators of heroine are heroism, courage, displaying strength, and claiming the right to authority.  This study implicates to realize people how popular culture has contaminated life and implicitly formed the perspective in looking at the surroundings. Expectantly, this thesis can stimulate the students of English Literature to learn more about the influence of popular culture to the contemporary literary works.

Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this thesis is to determine the tendency of news content attitude in presenting English news Antaranews.com about 2014 Indonesian presidential election, whether the result is neutral or not. In addition, the purpose of this thesis would also like to know what news topics are the most dominant in the presentation of 2014 Indonesian presidential election in this online media. This study analyzed 59 news about the presidential election during the campaign period that showed by Antaranews.com. This study used a descriptive method. It aims to describe to the reader and reveals a problem, situation, event as it is. This study involved two coders. Based on the analysis, the tendency news content attitude of Antaranews.com favoring the two candidates with the percentage, 36% pro Prabowo-Hatta and 37% pro Jokowi-JK. The most dominant news topic that showed in this Online Media is law and government with a percentage of 28%.AbstrakAnalisis Isi Berita Antaranews.com tentang Pemilihan Presiden tahun 2014. Tujuan dari skripsi ini adalah untuk mengetahui kecenderungan sikap isi berita berbahasa inggris Antaranews.com dalam menyajikan pemberitaan pemilihan presiden indonesia tahun 2014. Apakah hasilnya netral atau tidak. Selain itu, tujuan skripsi ini juga ingin mengetahui topik berita apa yang paling dominan dalam penyajian berita berbahasa inggris terkait Pemilihan Presiden Indonesia tahun 2014 pada media online tersebut. Penelitian ini menganalisis 59 berita tentang pemilihan presiden selama masa kampanye yang di tampilkan oleh Antaranews.com. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif yang bertujuan untuk menggambarkan kepada pembaca dan mengungkapkan suatu masalah, keadaan, peristiwa sebagaimana adanya. Penelitian ini melibatkan dua coder. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, kecenderungan sikap isi berita Antaranews.com adalah memihak kepada dua kandidat dengan persentase, 36% pro Prabowo-Hatta dan 37% pro Jokowi-JK. Adapun topik berita yang paling dominan di tampilkan adalah hukum dan pemerintahan dengan persentase 28%.

Abstract

AbstractVeiling in Indonesia is a unique phenomenon. Once it was banned in the public arena and has a negative menaing, yet several uears later its meaning was changed into more positive meanings. this article explores a poen published in the transition era when the meaning of the veil had been undergoing some changes. Syair LautanaJilbab is written by MH Ainun Najib, a most famous religious leader in Indonesia. This article shows how poemproduced new meaning dispalyed by the poem, and how people respond to the new meanings. The veil new meanings have influenced large people to adopt veiling as a religious symbol of their spiritual awareness.
