ELITE: English and Literature Journal (Print ISSN: 2355-0821, Online ISSN: 2580-5215) is a peer-reviewed journal devoted specifically to the studies of English linguistics and literature and other literatures with a special emphasis on local culture, wisdom, philosophy and identity. Published twice a year in June and December, the first edition of ELITE was published in 2013. The journal contents are managed by the English and Literature Department, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar, Indonesia. The primary objective of the journal is to provide a productive forum for lecturers, researchers, authors, graduate students, and practitioners to present results of their recent studies in the areas of English linguistics and literature and other literary traditions. The journal is also intended to help disseminate recent developments in theories, concepts, and ideas in the areas concerned to the academic community of language and literature studies in Indonesia in particular and worldwide in general.

Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this thesis is to determine the tendency of news content attitude in presenting English news Antaranews.com about 2014 Indonesian presidential election, whether the result is neutral or not. In addition, the purpose of this thesis would also like to know what news topics are the most dominant in the presentation of 2014 Indonesian presidential election in this online media. This study analyzed 59 news about the presidential election during the campaign period that showed by Antaranews.com. This study used a descriptive method. It aims to describe to the reader and reveals a problem, situation, event as it is. This study involved two coders. Based on the analysis, the tendency news content attitude of Antaranews.com favoring the two candidates with the percentage, 36% pro Prabowo-Hatta and 37% pro Jokowi-JK. The most dominant news topic that showed in this Online Media is law and government with a percentage of 28%.AbstrakAnalisis Isi Berita Antaranews.com tentang Pemilihan Presiden tahun 2014. Tujuan dari skripsi ini adalah untuk mengetahui kecenderungan sikap isi berita berbahasa inggris Antaranews.com dalam menyajikan pemberitaan pemilihan presiden indonesia tahun 2014. Apakah hasilnya netral atau tidak. Selain itu, tujuan skripsi ini juga ingin mengetahui topik berita apa yang paling dominan dalam penyajian berita berbahasa inggris terkait Pemilihan Presiden Indonesia tahun 2014 pada media online tersebut. Penelitian ini menganalisis 59 berita tentang pemilihan presiden selama masa kampanye yang di tampilkan oleh Antaranews.com. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif yang bertujuan untuk menggambarkan kepada pembaca dan mengungkapkan suatu masalah, keadaan, peristiwa sebagaimana adanya. Penelitian ini melibatkan dua coder. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, kecenderungan sikap isi berita Antaranews.com adalah memihak kepada dua kandidat dengan persentase, 36% pro Prabowo-Hatta dan 37% pro Jokowi-JK. Adapun topik berita yang paling dominan di tampilkan adalah hukum dan pemerintahan dengan persentase 28%.

Abstract

AbstractThe objective of this research is to find out the students’ motivation in reading English material by using fairy tales. In this study, the researcher applied the descriptive method. The population of the research was the eighth year students of SMP Negeri 3 Polewali academic year 2012/2013 which consisted of 4 classes with 124 students. Because the number of students was large enough in number, the writer used random sampling method. The researcher took only 20 students as respondents. The instrument used to gather the data was questionnaire. The data from questionnaires were analyzed by frequency and percentage technique. The result of the data analysis shows that the Eighth year students of SMP Negeri 3 Pelewali have high motivation in reading English material by using Fairy Tales. It can be seen by the data obtained from the questionnaire in table 1 up 19 where shows that the average percentage of students who chosen very interesting is 43% and the students who chosen interesting is 48%. So, the total is 91%. It means that the students who chosen very interesting and interesting greater than 50%. From the data collected above, it can be concluded that the using fairy tales can motivate students in reading English material.AbstrakTujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan motivasi mahasiswa dalam membaca materi bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan dongeng. Pada penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII di SMP Negeri 3 Polewali tahun ajaran 2012/2013 yang terdiri dari 3 kelas dengan jumlah siswa sebanyak 124. Jumlah siswa yang banyak maka peneliti menggunakan metode random sampling. Peneliti hanya mengambil sebanyak 20 siswa sebagai responden. Hal tersebut dilihat dari data perolehan angket mulai tebel 1 sampai table 19 yang memperlihatkan tingkat rata-rata siswa dengan pilihan sangat tertarik sebanyak 43 persen dan tertarik sebanyak 48 persen. Jadi totalnya sebesar 91 persen. Artinya, siswa yang memilih jawaban sangat tertarik dan tertarik lebih dari 50 persen. Berdasarkan data yang telah dikumpulkan tersebut, maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa dengan menggunakan dongeng dapat memotivasi siswa dalam membaca materi bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

AbstractThe objective of the study is to know the small groups discussion can improve the students’ speaking ability. In order to achieve the objective of this study, the writer designed an experimental method using pre-test and post- test. The population of this study was the eighth year students of Junior High School of SMPN 2 Saluputti. The sample of this study was the eight year students in academic year 2015/2016. The number of the students was 16 students. There were four meetings during the experiment. Before the experiment was conducted, the students were given a pre-test. At the end of the experiment, the students were given a post- test. The result of this study revealed that, the post- test scores were better than the pre-test scores. It could be seen by comparing their means. The mean score of the pre-test was 22.8, while the mean of the post test was 78.2. It shows that the mean score of the post test is greater than the pre test. The difference between pre test and post test was 55.3. In line with the result, the writer concludes that the Small Groups Discussion strategy is one of the effective strategies as to increase the activity and student learning outcomes in speaking subject. In teaching and learning activities teachers are expected to make cooperative learning as an alternative type of Small Groups Discussion in speaking subject to increase the activity and student learning outcomes, especially when teaching speaking to eighth year students of junior high school.  AbstrakTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah Diskusi Kelompok Kecil dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa. Untuk mencapai tujuan penelitian ini, penulis merancang metode eksperimen dengan menggunakan pre-test dan post-test. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII SMPN 2 Saluputti. Sampel penelitian ini adalah delapan tahun siswa pada tahun ajaran 2015/2016. Jumlah siswa adalah 16 siswa. Ada empat pertemuan selama percobaan. Sebelum percobaan dilakukan, siswa diberi pre-test. Pada akhir percobaan, siswa diberi post-tes. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa nilai post-test lebih baik daripada nilai pre-test. Skor rata-rata pre-test adalah 22,8, sedangkan dari post test adalah 78,2. Ini menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata post test lebih besar daripada pre test. Perbedaan antara pre test dan post test adalah 55,3. Sejalan dengan hasilnya, penulis berkesimpulan bahwa strategi Diskusi Kelompok Kecil merupakan salah satu strategi efektif untuk meningkatkan aktivitas dan hasil belajar siswa dalam mata pelajaran berbicara. Dalam kegiatan belajar mengajar guru diharapkan dapat melakukan pembelajaran kooperatif sebagai alternatif jenis Diskusi Kelompok Kecil dalam berbicara yang dapat meningkatkan aktivitas dan hasil belajar siswa, terutama saat mengajar berbicara kepada siswa kelas VIII SMP.

Abstract

AbstractThis thesis studied about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) based on the script of the movie You Are Not You which was released in 2014. This research aimed to describe and analyze the ways to heal and cure the ALS disease and how the main character’s social life during facing this disease in the movie. This research focused on sociological approach and based on the theory of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) by National Institute of Health (NIH) theory. This research used descriptive qualitative method and used note taking as the instrument. The findings showed that there are twenty-three data from six ways to heal and to cure the disease, they are: two therapies from Physicians, four therapies from Pharmacists, one physical treatment, two occupational and speech therapies, two therapies from nutritionist and twelve therapies from social workers and home care and hospice nurse. Meanwhile, there are eight social interactions by Kate with other character (individual to individual) and there are six social interactions by Kate with more than one character (individual to group).AbstrakPenelitian ini tentang penyakit Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) berdasarkan skrip pada film You Are Not You yang ditayangkan pertama kali pada tahun 2012. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan dan menganalisis cara mengobati penyakit ALS dan bagaimana kehidupan sosial si penderita penyakit dalam film tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan sosiologi dan berdasarkan teori Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) oleh National Institute of Health (NIH). Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan instrumen note taking. Penelitian ini menemukan dua puluh tiga data dari enam cara mengobati penyakit ALS yaitu melalui dua terapi dari dokter, empat terapi dari apoteker, satu terapi fisik, dua terapi peralatan dan terapi wicara, dua terapi diet dan dua belas terapi oleh perawat di rumah. Sementara, ada delapan interaksi individu dan enam interaksi kelompok yang dilakukan oleh Kate selama menghadapi penyakit ini.

Abstract

AbstractSome codices state that ancestors of South and West Sulawesi people come from Toraja area. It drives to a logic thinking that Torajanese is protolanguage of other local languages such as Makassarese. Buginese and Mandarese. This research is aimed to investigate the genetic relationship between Torajanese and Mandarese and to identify kinds of sound change happening from Torajanese into Mandarese. The method used in this paper is lexicostatistics by comparing 200 Swadesh basic vocabulary of Torajanese and Mandarese. The result shows that Torajanese and Mandarese can be categorized as two relative languages with kinship percentage rate of 49%. The second finding is that there are eight patterns of sound changes; they are apharesis, syncope, lenition, fortition, assimilitaion, vowel breaking, metathesis and prosthesis. AbstrakBeberapa naskah kuno menyatakan bahwa nenek moyang berbagai suku yang berada di wilayah Sulawesi Selatan dan Sulawesi Barat berasl dari Toraja. Hal tersebut melahirkan sebuah pemikiran logis bahwa bahasa Toraja merupakan bahasa proto dari bahasa local lainnya seperti Makassar, Bugis dan Mandar. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan genetik antara bahasa Toraja dan bahasa Mandar dan  untu mengidentifikasi perubahan bunyi dari bahasa Toraja dan bahasa Mandar. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode leksikostatistik dengan membandingkan 200 kata dasar Swadesh dari kedua bahasa tersebut. Hasil penelitian menujukkan bahwa bahasa Toraja dan bahasa Mandar dapat dikategorisasikan sebagai bahasa yang berkerabat dengan persentasi kemiripan sebesar 49% atau memiliki perbedaan sebesar 51% saja. Kedua, terdapat delapan jenis perubahan bunyi pada dua bahasa tersebut yakni syncope, lenition, fortition, assimilitaion, vowel breaking, metathesis dan prosthesis.

Abstract

AbstractAnalyzing Social Aspects in the Scarlet Letter Novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne. This research aimed to find out how the structural element of the novel supported the whole idea of the story and the social aspects of Nathaniel Hawthorne novel “The Scarlet Letter”. This thesis is library research and used descriptive method. The object of this research can be divided into two categories, namely primary and secondary data. The data were collected through several techniques, namely read the novel carefully, looked for the difficult word, taking note of the important parts both primary and secondary data, and then read some related literature to support the object that is analyzed. The result of this research show that the social aspects in the scarlet letter novel are divided into five categories, they are: (1) Family, (2) Religion, (3) Tradition, (4) Economy, (5) Education, and this thesis also described the structural elements that support the whole idea of the story. AbstrakAnalisis sosial aspek yang terungkap dalam novel scarlet letter oleh Nathaniel Hawthorne. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan struktur elemen yang terdapat dalam novel yang mendukung keseluruhan ide dalam cerita dan aspek social dalam novel “Scarlet Letter” oleh Nathaniel Hawthorne. Penelitian ini adalah bentuk penelitian pustaka dan menggunakan metode deskriptif. Objek penelitian ini terbagi menjadi dua kategori, yaitu data primer dan data sekunder. Data di kumpulkan melalui beberapa tehnik, seperti membaca novel dengan seksama, menemukan kata-kata sulit, mencatat bagian terpenting dari data penelitian, dan membaca beberapa referensi yang berkaitan untuk mendukung objek penelitian yang diteliti. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa aspek social yang terdapat dalam novel Scarlet Letter terdiri dari lima kategori, diantaranya; (1) Keluarga, (2) Agama, (3) Tradisi, (4) Ekonomi, (5) Pendidikan, dan penelitian ini juga menjelaskan struktur elemen yang mendukung semua ide dalam cerita.

Abstract

AbstractThis research aimed at identifying the student’s achievement in mastering English Tourism terms and factors that influence their achievement the of English tourism Terms at STKIP Sandhy putra 1 Makassar. The data collected were multiple choice test and questionnaire. In doing this research, the writer used descriptive quantitative with total sampling. The subject of  this research consist of the third year students of SMKP Sandhy Putra 1 Makassar who enrolled in academic. The result of the research showed that out from 60 sample of both departments, hotel affairs accomodation got 7,3 scores and categorized as fairly good, while Tourism Plan department got 8,1 scores and they categorized as good. The research concluded that the third grade students of SMKP Sandhy Putra 1 Makassar generally were good in mastering English Tourism Terms. This was supported by the students’ high motivation, supporting facilities and continuity practising and assignment giving by their teacher.  AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui prestasi belajar siswa dalam menguasai istilah dan faktor Pariwisata Inggris yang mempengaruhi prestasi belajar mereka terhadap Syarat Pariwisata Inggris di STKIP Sandhy putra 1 Makassar. Data yang terkumpul adalah tes pilihan berganda dan kuesioner. Dalam melakukan penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan deskriptif kuantitatif dengan total sampling. Subyek penelitian ini terdiri dari siswa kelas tiga SMKP Sandhy Putra 1 Makassar yang terdaftar di bidang akademik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dari 60 sampel dari kedua departemen, akomodasi urusan hotel mendapat nilai 7,3 dan dikategorikan cukup baik, sedangkan Dinas Pariwisata mendapat 8,1 nilai dan dikategorikan baik. Hasil penelitian menyimpulkan bahwa siswa kelas tiga SMKP Sandhy Putra 1 Makassar umumnya ahli dalam menguasai Persyaratan Pariwisata Bahasa Inggris. Hal ini didukung oleh motivasi, fasilitas pendukung dan kesinambungan pengajaran dan pemberian pelajaran oleh guru mereka.
