Abstract

The study discusses certification of competence test for professional librarians as efforts to improve the quality of human resources in the library. Method of the study is descriptive analytical. The result of the study showed that librarians at state academic libraries in the Province of Bengkulu had interests in improving their quality through certification of competence test. Fifty percent (50%) of librarians agreed on the importance of certification to improve quality of library human resources. Yet, some others considered that certification was not yet important because it was just a formality, as a condition for promotion and rank. Their actual purpose for joining certification was to get certification allowance. Since regulation on certification is not yet clear in terms of allowance and enforcement, some librarians were not very enthusiastic in joining certification.

Abstract

This study aims to find out users perceptions towards quality of Window of the World (WOW) service based on the LibQUAL+TM models in the library of Universitas Gadjah Mada Yogyakarta. The type of the study is descriptive quantitative. Subjects of the study were users of the facilities of WOW service, while the object of the study was users perception about the quality of WOW service. Data were obtained from questionnaires, observation, interviews, and documentation. Sampling used incidental sampling technique, with a sample size of 100 respondents. There was a single variable, i.e. perception about WOW service. Data analysis used the mean and grand mean. Measurement of users perception was based on the Libqual+TM models that included four dimensions. These were ability and attitude of librarians in serving (Service Affect-SA), the dimensions of the facilities and atmosphere of the space of the library (Library As Place-LP), the dimensions of the user and means of access (Personal Control-PC), and the dimensions of information access (information access-IA). Each dimension showed that the perception of the dimension of librarian in serving (Service Affact-SA) with an average of 3.05 (good), the dimensions of the facilities and atmosphere of the space of the library (Library As Place-LP) with an average of 3.13 (good), the dimensional directions and means of access (Personal Control-PC) with an average of 3.12 (good), and the dimensions of information access (information access-IA) with an average of 3.06 (good). The result showed that the users perception about WOW service based on LibQUAL+TM models in library of Universitas Gadjah Mada Yogyakarta was good. It can be seen from the total average of variable that is equal to 3.09, so it is necessary to improve the quality of WOW service in the library of Universitas Gadjah Mada Yogyakarta to achieve excellent category. It was especially necessary to improve quality at its lowest dimensions on the dimensions of librarians in serving (Service Affect - SA) with an average of 3.05.

Abstract

Purpose –The purpose of this study was to identify the reasons for due date book returns, borrowers attitude when exposed to fines, library efforts to minimize fines and evaluate the effectiveness of fines in the library. Design/methodology/approach – This study used descriptive quantitative and qualitative approach. It was conducted at the Library of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Samples were purposively selected, involving undergraduate and postgraduate students batch 2011, 2012 and 2013 that never got fines and were still active. Findings – Borrowers had some reasons for overdue book returns, such as they forgot renewing the book, the book was booked by another user, they forgot the due date, they had no class to attend, had not finished reading, borrowed in short period of time, as well as other reasons, such as illness, a friend borrowed the book. So the term of the loan for 5 days was considered insufficient for them to read the books. Borrowers had to pay fines directly. If they were not yet able to pay the fines then they would not borrow books. Borrowers knew that overdue books would put other users at a disadvantage. Most of borrowers considered the fine to pay as much as Rp5,000.00 /day/book was high. But a few regarded it low. Borrowers considered that blocking the system was not effective for those who were late paying fines. The most effective effort that could be done in order that the borrower returned the books on time was providing online renewal system.
