The Prasasti: Journal of Linguistics (PJL) is devoted to the problems of general linguistics. Its aim is to present work of current interest in all areas of linguistics. Contributions are required to contain such general theoretical implications as to be of interest to any linguist, whatever their own specialisation. PJL, previously known as UNS Journal of Language Studies, is a journal of linguistics to accommodate scientific articles from Descriptive Linguistics, Pragmatics, and Translation Studies.

Abstract

This study was conducted in order to explain of Partai Amanat Nasional (PAN) political banner campaign uniqueness within 2018-2019 campaign periods. This study focused on the linguistic feature which employed and discursive technique in the banner. The data was collected from internet and limited only to banner in West Java province. Fairclough 3D-model is used as framework in this study to see the relation of language and it implication in society. The findings disclosed that the whole banner discourse, including images, design, and language supports the construction of message in the banner. It was also PAN political banner campaign in West Java act as entertainment to the readers.

Abstract

This article studies about sound variation sand sound change in Arabic dialect Pasar Kliwon. The data searching use observe (simak) and conversation (cakap) method. The technique of data searching is record (rekam) and register (catat). The data searching refers to question list from 120 swadesh vocabularies. Data analysis used padan method and depends on informan?s speech organ. The analysis research use sound change theory according to Crowley (1992) and Muslich (2012). The vowel sound in Arabic dialect Pasar Kliwon divided by two kinds: short vowel sound and long vowel sound. There are twenty sevenconsonant sounds and divided by seven kinds: plosive, fricative, affricative, liquid, voiced, voiceless, and velariation sound. The sound variation of semi-vowel is wawu and ya>?. The vowel sound change divided by four kinds: lenition, anaptycsis, apocope, metathesis. The consonant sound change divided by four kinds:  lenition, anaptycsis, apocope, and sincope.The diftong sound change is monoftongitation.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal the form and marker of aspectuality in The Great Gatsby novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The data in this study are written data in the form of words, clauses, and sentences in the novel The Great Gatsby. It was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald  consists of three forms of aspectuality namely perfective / completed, progressive, and repetitive / habitual. The aspect that is often used is perfective / completed aspiration. Aspectuality markers used including perfective aspect characterized by past verb or had + past participle verb, while progressive aspect are marked to be + verb ing, and repetitive / habitual are marked with past verb or infinitive forms.

Abstract

This research deployed translation of directive speech acts with the descriptive qualitative method. Its objective was to describe the translation technique of the directive speech acts and to evaluate the quality of the translation based on accuracy, acceptability, and readability. It employed document analysis and focus group discussion for data collection. It was concluded words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and contained one type of directive speech act. Data were collected through content analysis and validated by rate through focus group discussion (FGD). The result shows that are 14 techniques which are applied in directives speech act translating, those are established equivalence, variation, modulation, implication, explication, discursive creation, transposition, paraphrase, compensation, addition, reduction, borrowing, literal, and generalization. The research result concludes that the deployment of appropriate translation techniques produces a good transition.  The translation techniques affect the translation quality. Established equivalence produces in the accurate quality of the translation. Discursive creation results in a less accurate translation. Moreover, the imperfection of translation quality is affected by the use of reduction techniques.

Abstract

In a metaphorical expression can contain a concept that describes a person's emotional experience (Kövecses, 2000). The following study aim to find the conceptualization of emotional metaphors?happy, sad, fear, angry, and love?on students of Univesitas Indonesia. Sixteen respondents, seven males and nine females, participated in this research. Respondent?s data collected using self-report in a qualitative form. Research result appear to support statement and previous studies which explains that metaphors apply not only as linguistic feature but also giving concrete picture in abstract or conceptual matters. Besides theoretical benefits, researcher also aim to add more contextual studies, specifically in bahasa Indonesia, regarding the relationship between emotion-related conceptual metaphors through the production of metaphors relating to emotional experience. This study has limitations  regarding the lack of depths in studies about culture, considering previous studies by Yu (1995) and Nguyen (2013) highlighted that cultural differences influence the various production of emotional-conceptual metaphors. Future research can incorporate interview and experiment to ignite the emotion-related metaphors.

Abstract

This article aims to explain how public speaking strategies for Mr. Tourism Sumatera Barat 2018 as a form of defending self image. The strategy that can be used is the strategy of telling Brown and Levinson about positive and negative faces. As the center of attention, a speaker must be able to maintain the face for an audience (audience) with the material presented. Public speaking training can be given in the form of material presentation and training using STAD type cooperative learning model. By using STAD type model, it is expected that the training participants can learn in their respective groups with directed instructors for the preparation of individual presentation. The results of the activities show that STAD model is effectively used to practice speech or public speaking. This is evident from the activity of the trainees following the material and confidence in public speaking.

Abstract

The practice of teaching English as global language that has been widely spread in Indonesia does not fit to promote Indonesian local culture. Most of English language teaching practice pays much attention to students? understanding relates to their local culture, but the whole process of English Language Teaching (ELT) itself denotes that students do not really apply their local culture in the English language learning. The effort of integrating local culture in ELT is still far from the concept of particularity, practicality, and of possibility. This article provides a conceptual perspective on the role of English as Lingua Franca (ELF) ? Informed Approach in ELT in terms of preserving students? cultural identity. It starts with describing the important issues dealing with the topic, evaluate the previous studies, building argument, and drawing conclusion and recommendation.  The article concludes that the approach needs to be more informed in the whole process of ELT in terms of learning English and preserving students? local culture in which students are allowed to use English within their local culture rather than only in understanding their culture without practicing.

Abstract

Film is one communication media to deliver message. This study investigates speech act in the film by using pragmatics approarch. Children film is chosen since children indirectly get new vocabulary in the form of word, phrase, or sentence through film. This study is entitled ?A Pragmatic Study on the Function of Speech Act in Disney Princess Film?. It covers one important thing, such as the function of speech act in children film. This is descriptive qualitative study which reveals the data collection on the film transcript through the character?s dialogue in the film. The result of this study are as follow. The function of speech act in the children film are a) representative speech act is used to stating, insisting, reporting, summarizing, describing, proposing, and confronting; b) expressive speech act is used to asking apologize, praising, regretting, showing like or love, and showing fear; c) commisive speech act is used to promising, offering, and rejecting; and d) directive speech act is used to commanding, ordering, requesting, asking, and forcing. This result shows the function of speech act which is used in children film. Those speech act is usually imitated and restated by the children who watch movie in their daily life.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan konstruksi kausatif pada novel berbahasa Arab ?Richlatu Ilal-Ghad? karya Taufik El-Hakim. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan tipologi linguistik. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Metode pengumpulan data menggunakan metode simak dengan menggunakan Teknik catat. Sedangkan metode analisis data menggunakan metode agih dengan teknik dasar bagi unsur langsung. Teknik lanjutan menggunakan teknik baca markah. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) Konstruksi kausatif leksikal dapat ditemukan beberapa contoh dan pola verba yang dipakai merupakan verba pola I. (2) Konstruksi kausatif morfologis dapat ditemukan pada verba pola II, IV, dan X. (3) Konstruksi kausatif perifratis dapat ditemukan pada pola verba.

Abstract

This research is entitled ?Abbreviation in Everyday Converstion on Social Media: A Morphological Study?. The method used in this study is a qualitative method. The data are taken from everyday conversation on social media such as line, whatsapp, facebook, twitter, and instagram. The theory are used abbreviation process and slang language. The aims of this study are to describe the common features of abbreviation process used by young and adult Indonesian people. Based on the research, it is indicated that the participants used three most common abbreviation processes are acronym, blending, and clipping in everyday conversation on social media. Acronym and blending found as the most common abbreviation process among the three features. As for the reasons of this language phenomenon occurrence identified are the participants intend to save time, fill the communication gap or barrier among the users, and indicate the social group.
