Abstract

Historically, the surau has become an important means (institution/agency) in terms of community development and enlightenment, particularly in religious learning and cultivation of moral values. In addition, the surau-based education had a significant reputation with regard to the spread of Islam to various regions and the area around an island and beyond, and probably to other countries. As a means of religious education, we can still find surau until now, although its role and function are no longer the same as they were in the past, in which educational activities of Islam in the early days of its growth were carried out under the surau educational system. Thus, since the beginning of the spread of Islam to Indonesia, surau has contributed the shape and pattern of its own in the Islamic educational system

Abstract

Since Basra was a trading port for Iraq in the Arab Gulf, foreign influences that affected the progress in the field of trade and investment. Here in this port, encounters occurred between Arabs, Persians and Indians as well as between the religions of Christianity, Judaism, Majus and Islam. The closeness between Basra and the Gandisabur school in Persia that studied the Persian, Greek, and Indian culture has generated a mix of culture as a whole. During the period of Umar ibn Abdul Aziz, translation works on medical books were carried out by Masir Haubah. The same thing was also undertaken by Abdullah al-Muqaffa’ who was fluent in Arabic and Persian. He translated books on the Persian literature and history into Arabic. From the son of Abdullah al-Muqaffa, Muhammad, the Arabic translation of Aristotle’s science of logic Kalilah wa Dimnah was produced. There was also a Jewish translator named Hunain Ibn Ishaq, who translated books and got rewards in the form of gold for each weight of books he translated. In Basra, there was a school of Mutazilah that learnt the Greek sciences. This strongly affected the school of sciences he learnt such as the science of kalam and nahwu in terms of taqsim, ta’lil, ta’wil dan qiyas.

Abstract

Curriculum in Indonesia is always related to the constellation of power, and therefore the direction and substance of the curriculum are determined by the decision of state authorities and non-state subsystems, or complying to a certain notion and concept of education. Constellation of power and complexity of curriculum can be seen in the instruction of Competency-Based Curriculum (KBK), school-based curriculum (KTSP) and 2013 Curriculum. After all, there is no guarantee that these curriculums will be able to develop students’ competency and build their character in line with the national education goals as mandated by Law No. 20/2003 on National Education System. In fact, there is nothing wrong with the curriculum; it is the fault of policy makers of education. The Indonesian people need political will of the government. Curriculum is not the only factor that determines the quality of education. Nor is it the only tool to realize the vision of education. However, curriculum can serve as a strategic device to seed the interests of power. Changes in curriculum in fact generate a strong constellation of power in the curriculum itself, especially in determining the content of education, so no wonder education in Indonesia is “subjugated” by curriculums with business and political interests.

Abstract

One of the issues facing the contemporary world society is the increasing escalation of violence (including radicalism under the pretext of religion). At least, we can remember the events closest to the writing of this article i.e. bomb attacks in France and in Thamrin Jakarta. This phenomenon signifies that radicalism is continuing to grow and becoming a threat to modern society. It also has affected all parties in some way, and therefore all should take part in preventing such violent acts from occurring in the future. Among the institutions that have a role in suppressing radicalism under the name of religion is an educational institution, especially religious educational institutions. Ironically, the institution itself is still facing serious problems, including the issue of peace which has yet to be a mainstream premise of Islamic religious education. The themes of peace education are merely a fragmented material. This paper offers a principal concept of peace education and its practical forms developed from the Qur’an. Therefore, this paper is a review of the normative Islamic perspective on peace and conflict. Peace education is expected to shape the community (especially students) to be independent and literate with efforts of peace building and conflict resolution. The purpose of this article is to explore the Islamic perspective on peace, which can be developed in the instruction of Islamic education both in the school and madrasa.

Abstract

Abul Ala al-Maududi is known as one of the leading writers of Islam in Pakistan who held the school of thought of neo-revivalist Islam, as compiled by Fazlur Rahman. Although he was known as an ulama, thinker and politician, he also contributed to the development of Islamic education. Islamic education institutions should serve as an alternative to Western modern education, in which it should not only develop science alone, but also understand the divine light through the Quran and Sunahtullah. This, in his words, is called the foundation of tauhid in education. He also suggested the Islamic education should be critical of modern science developed by the West. Keywords: Islamic Education, Basic of Tauhid, the Divine Light.
