Abstract

In terms of language, every people influence each other. Polling other language elements will give the advantage that it can enrich the language concerned. language of the recipient will be harmed if the inclusion of other languages impacts disrupt the structure so that in case of deviation usage rules or cause symptoms of interference. The greater the difference between the elements of the first language and a second language, the greater the problems in the process of learning the language. Can be implied that the fault in the process of learning a second language can be explained as a symptom interference (Weinrich, 1964: 1). The research method in this research is descriptive method to retrieve data from a magazine spreaders spirit. Data analysis refers to the qualitative problem-solving approach is distributional. Interference in the field of grammatical (grammar) in particular this morphology occurs when bilingual identify morpheme, class morpheme or relationship grammatical system second language with morpheme, class morpheme or relationship grammatical system first language and use it in tuturannya in a second language, and vice versa (Rusyana, 1975: 68). Interference in the field of Indonesian morphology in the use of the Java language is seen in the morphology process which includes the process of affixation, reduplication and compounding processes. This morphological interference includes interference prefixes di-, ter-, ke-, N-, uncle and dear; suffix -an interference; konfiks interference include to - / - s, N / -i, N - / - ake, in the - / - i, in the - / - ake, pa - / - s, and ka - / - late; and interference affixes join Men- (per-ake) and di- (per - / - ake). In addition affixation process, interference in morphology field also includes the full reduplication reduplication form and reduplication with the addition of the suffix -an and suffix -ne, but it also contained a compound interference. Interference grammatical morphology of Indonesian particularly into the use of the Java language is relatively rare compared with the interference of the Java language into Indonesian. Thus, this means that in the field of Java language grammatically more stable than Indonesian. It is caused by a factor pride Java native speakers of the language is still high.

Abstract

Translation products now can be found not only in written or printed versions, but also in forms of website pages and website translation is popular in global industry as localization.  The global use of the internet encourages websites all over the world to give an easy access to the website visitors by providing them with the translated versions of the sites. As one of new disciplines, translation now begins to develop as many scholars conduct research on it in various aspects. Along with the development, many undergraduate students are also interested in conducting research on translation focusing mainly on translation techniques and translation quality assessment which covers accuracy, acceptability, and readability. This paper is aimed at cutting open dimensions of website translation quality assessment which is based on dynamic translation model (DTM) namely pragmatic, semantic, stylistic, and semiotic dimensions proposed by Bolanos in Hariyanto (2015). Those dimensions are used as a set of parameters to assess the equivalence of the target text (TT), which is related to the acceptability of the translation for the target readers.

Abstract

JacquesLacan’s poststructuralist theories of psychology have greatly affected modern understandings of the human psyche. This is evident in literary studies, where numerous thinkers – including Lacan himself – have applied these theories to better understand works of literature. One work which benefits from such an application is Ahmad Tohari’s Kubah, a 1982 novel on the ex-communist Karman’s seeming redemption after spending twelve years as a political prisoner. This paper will use a Lacanian psychoanalysis to show how Karman’s need to find wholeness, one which has been lost since before his birth, led to his various activities, including the joining of the Communist Party and his return to Islam. Although the novel ends on a hopeful note, it will be shown that Karman has not truly found the wholeness for which he has searched.

Abstract

This article provides the explanation about how hedges function in the conclusion section based on Hyland’s hedges functions (1996). This study belongs to descriptive qualitative. The data sources of the study were conclusion sections of theses in English written in the year of 2000 to 2010. Based on the analysis of hedges function proposed by Hyland, the Indonesian EFL students mostly used hedges as writer-oriented hedges, 37 %. It seems that the students could not minimize mistake upon statement in the proposition, could not show less absolute statement, and also could not convey arguments or statements speculatively. English lecturers should take hedges as one of the learning materials so that the students will be familiar in applying them for the academic writings. Moreover, I think that hedges studies provide assistance for the students in employing hedges appropriately.

Abstract

Abstract

<p>The issue of cultural identity in immigrants living in the United States of America which is reflected in Kahf’s “The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf” is a valuable topic to discuss. The way how Khadra, as the main character, negotiates her identity as a Syrian-American will be analyzed by a multidisciplinary approach based on the process of developing the cultural identity in cultural studies through qualitative and content analysis.  The negotiation of identity of Syrian-American has created a sense of double-consciousness in the life of this community. They experience to stand both as a Syrian and as an American. They also feel the dispersion from their original place which makes them to have memories and vision about their homeland. Moreover, the prejudices which come both from their side and the majority of American side have created a sense of not belonging to America. Moreover, through the process of acculturation, the process of negotiating identity is also shaped. This acculturation relies on 1) the loyalty to certain religion, beliefs and practices; 2) Assimilation of culture; 3) Rejection, prejudice, power and relationship between the majority and minority; 4) Gender and social class.  Moreover, the process of negotiating identity engages the historical and cultural values in both the old country and the new country. From what she has learned through her life experiences in America, her process of assimilation and her memories about Syria, she comes to a decision to see that her identity as a Syrian is as important as her identity as an American. It is also as central as her identity both as a woman and as a Muslim. In conclusion, these multiple identities that she holds are perfect combination that fit her cultural identity as a Syrian-American Muslim woman. It makes her to exhibit attitudes and behaviors of openness, inclusiveness, and tolerance, such as less prejudice and to be more cooperation toward the other.</p>
